Is President John Adams trying to murder his Vice-President Thomas Jefferson? Now that George Washington is no longer President, is the United States falling apart? Shocking allegations are being made in the wake of a waiter's death at Washington's farewell dinner -- that Jefferson was the intended victim instead of the waiter, the target of a deadly political assassination plot. Is the President really a murderer? So many people want to see Jefferson dead. Could it be the preacher who thinks Jefferson's an agent of the Devil? A jilted lover or a jealous rival? The former captive of the Barbary pirates who blames Jefferson for his sorry fate? Or did the murderer only want to kill the waiter, after all? As the country slides quickly toward anarchy and civil war, Senator Jacob Martin must find the answers, to save the country and the woman he loves. Patriots and Poisons, an engaging mystery full of historically accurate and vivid detail, takes you back to 1797 Philadelphia, a critical time in United States history when people could still ask the question seriously, whether declaring Independence was a terrible mistake.

About the Author Jamison Borek retired from a successful career of nearly thirty years as a lawyer, diplomat, and government official for the US Department of State in order to write historical fiction. Having done in "living history" events at historic sites and museums in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York for some twenty years, she has learned much about the country's history during the critical early years. A lover of mysteries, she was inspired to write a mystery set in 1797 Philadelphia when she researched the period for a reenactment and became fascinated by the conflicts and challenges facing a young country. Borek is also the author of Amanda's Secret: A Colonial Girl's Story, a children's novel set in 1771 Williamsburg. She lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with her husband, Ted Borek.

Intriguing story, well-research historical setting By Margaret Morgan Patriots and Poisons: A Founding Fathers Mystery is not just another mystery: it is also a peek into the politics and passions of the founders of the nation. Set in 1797, just after John Adams was elected president in a highly contentious election, intrigue surrounds an attempt to murder Thomas Jefferson. Economics, international relations, religion, the media and social customs of the time all contribute to the plot. In addition, the author skillfully introduces the reader to the personalities, points of view, and political ideas of the founders of the nation that most of us know only by name or title. Well-researched detail brings to life the milieu of the residents of Philadelphia at the time.I highly recommend this book as a very good read. And in our own highly charged political times, it is interesting to look back to see how politics have and haven't changed since the early days of the grand experiment of the United States of America.
