Frost in the Sun (CLAIRE LORRIMER'S HISTORICAL SAGAS), by Claire Lorrimer

From Publishers Weekly This run-of-the-mill family saga follows the members of two wealthy enclaves, the English Costains and the Spanish Monteros. When, in 1913, Casilda Montero, indulged and impulsive, leaves her father's vast cattle ranch for an English convent school, she accomplishes two things: she comes closer to her cousin Alan Costain, whom she is determined to marry; and she makes a lifelong friend in Joscelin Howard, a talented student whose family is of lower social status. As Casilda pursues stormy sexual relationships and Joscelin struggles with her unexpressed love for Alan, the Spanish Civil War looms. Soon brothers and cousins will be on opposite sides; Casilda's brother lives in Germany with a Jewish wife under the shadow of nascent Nazism. The sprawling story reaches even to New York, where Lady Costain, Alan's mother, has fled from an unfulfilling marriage. Scenes of aristocratic power and privilege, and of consummated and thwarted passion mark the plot's milestones, but there is no single character among the many in this busy novel who is realized beyond a stereotypical mold. Lorrimer's other romances include Mavreen and The Chatelaine. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Casilda Montero meets Joscelin Howard when the eight-year-olds are first sent to an English convent school before World War I. The wealthy daughter of a Spanish nobleman, Cassy becomes the champion of less fortunate Joss, including her in family events and making her the recipient of all her confidences for the next 30 years. As a child, Joss falls in love with Cassy's English cousin Alan. Although her love for him grows as she does, she feels such gratitude to Cassy that she willingly sacrifices her own happiness. If Joss's self-denial can be accepted, the reader will enjoy a tightly written historical novel offering several perspectives on the Spanish Civil War. As a love story, however, the book leaves the reader dissatisfied. Andrea Lee Shuey, Dallas Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review 'Passion in the bloody battlefields of the Spanish Civil War...a huge and powerful novel' Evening Standard A sizzling read...a wonderful sweeping saga that is exciting to the end Woman's Realm ' [A] wide ranging family saga...the setting is sheer glamour' Evening Telegraph A magnificent international historical saga Bookseller

SWEEPING EPIC SAGA By little lady blue A solid 4 ½ Stars! This far-reaching saga spanning 1909 to 1939 sweeps through Spain, England, Scotland, Paris, Italy and Germany. The story of two best friends who are so different in every way except that they fall in love with the same man.Casilda Montero (Cassy) from a titled Spanish family and Joscelin Howard (Joss) of the sedate English middle class meet at boarding school and an unlikely bond is forged. Cassy is one of a large Spanish family while Joss is an only child. In the beginning Cassie as a teenager is a head-strong, mischievous girl while Joss is demure and compliant - against all odds their friendship is sealed and they become life-long friends.Cassie, as an adult, reveals herself to be truly vain, self-centered and spoiled (shades of Scarlett O'Hara) while Joss' sweet, empathetic nature allows for Cassie's every misdeed. Their friendship never wanes and survives even the most devastating drama, even their love of the same man.Not unlike `Gone with the Wind' this 613 page novel brings the reader a little bit of everything an epic novel should have - love; passion; history; friendship; secrets; family; and war and leads the reader to a most bitter-sweet, satisfying ending.First published in January 1986 this story could have been written yesterday. Since I missed it in 1986 I am pleased to have found this newly published edition.
