Contains all-new images and a new Appendix by Charles E. Gannon!2105, September: Intelligence Analyst Caine Riordan uncovers a conspiracy on Earth's Moon—a history-making clandestine project—and ends up involuntarily cryocelled for his troubles. Twelve years later, Riordan awakens to a changed world. Humanity has achieved faster-than-light travel and is pioneering nearby star systems. And now, Riordan is compelled to become an inadvertent agent of conspiracy himself. Riordan's mission: travel to a newly settled world and investigate whether a primitive local species was once sentient—enough so to have built a lost civilization. However, arriving on site in the Delta Pavonis system, Caine discovers that the job he's been given is anything but secret or safe. With assassins and saboteurs dogging his every step, it's clear that someone doesn't want his mission to succeed. In the end, it takes the keen insights of an intelligence analyst and a matching instinct for intrigue to ferret out the truth: that humanity is neither alone in the cosmos nor safe. Earth is revealed to be the lynchpin planet in an impending struggle for interstellar dominance, a struggle into which it is being irresistibly dragged. Discovering new dangers at every turn, Riordan must now convince the powers-that-be that the only way for humanity to survive as a free species is to face the perils directly—and to fight fire with fire.At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

What we have here, gentlemen, is Secret Agent: Mary Sue By Justin Imagine if one day, for no discernible reason, elite and powerful members of the intelligence community start hanging on your every word and begin scheming and plotting to make your life interesting.Imagine their horror at the utter necessity by which they are forced to induct you against your will into their spy agency. "This Mary," they say, "she is THE ONLY HOPE for humanity. Why must we mistreat her so?""Why?" one of them might ask. "As far as I can tell, she's some random reporter with no particular skills.""I'm not really clear on this 'why' issue," the president of the world says from a dark, smoke filled corner of the room. "But blast it, she is the one! Without her, humanity is lost! Mary Sue is our only hope!"In mere moments, you are hang gliding through a cloud forest full of dinosaurs with rocket powered robo-Hitlers chasing you from tree top to tree top! Using the brand new super spy skills you learned last Friday, you dive between the jaws of a T-Rex and steal the Star Emerald of Hope from the maw of a giant dragon-Cthulhu!Meanwhile, while our pack of mysterious spy masters are plotting a scheme to trick some hunk into dating you, they get into a long and pointless debate over whether a blonde or brunette is more to your liking. "My God!" says the Director of the CIA-NSA-FSB, "this random sex object had better be up to Mary Sue's standards, or the world is done for!"...Would this book be your style? Perhaps you'd prefer to flip the sexes of the characters, and use a name like Caine Riordan instead? If so, then have we found the book for you! I may have changed a few particulars of the plot around, but don't worry, it doesn't matter very much.If that doesn't sound like a book you'd like to read, then I suggest you skip this one.

Dong I decided to come on Amazon because I assumed some insider deal must have led David Weber, David Brin and Jerry Pournelle to recommend this book. I see from the other reviews, though, that it is apparently possible to like it. I found it a weird combination of a bad sci-fi of yesteryear and...well, the Mary Sue mention captures it. Every 20 pages the guy escapes from death. We hear the top spy people talk about how he is an incredible genius, a polymath, whose mind works totally different from others. But apparently it never occurred to recruit him in a normal way and they hate the lying in their jobs (very yesteryear) because he's so pure, and it was reasonable to cryogenically freeze this citizen not because they were afraid he'd say anything, but because an author on an investigation who disappears on the moon is apparently less likely to draw bad publicity than if they'd just revived him... ah, hell. I just skimmed the last half, though what I saw only seemed to make it look more idiotic. An alien contact that should have been the whole book instead took about 100 pages and then they're off for more. Meanwhile, things like the fact that the guys parents died while he was frozen only get tossed in at about that mark by the praising master spies, while our hero never spares a single thought for them or his previous life (aside from his first thought upon waking, which was "I wonder if there will be a place for me in this world." Seriously? After just 13 years?) We also have about 700 people die who only bother him through one nightmare (lucky he didn't know any kids on that occasion) when our supposed incredible polymath is apparently to be lauded for other lives saved, when he had days to come up with something that would have saved everyone. Eck. No personality, one attack after another, and just totally unbelievable. I still don't know how any of you could have liked it.

Heck of a start Chuck, I'm very pleased with it. Never lets up, never even really slows down. Full throttle thriller and, here's a bit of a shock. The characters are good, complex, devious, real. I learned from Piper, Heinlein, Campbell, the good guy is supposed to be good. I loath the whinny, self doubting anti-hero that so many authors dish up. You won't find that here, the Hero is a good guy and competent, the major players are good at their job, even when they hate their job. The bad guys are realistic. This opens up a vast area for sequels and additional stories in this universe. I look forward to the next installment. Very much worth the purchase price.
