2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I wanted to like it, but the author should be ashamed of what found its way to my Kindle. By E. Rotberg First of all, my apologies in advance to the author for this review. I do not know him, and it is no small feat to pour out one's soul in a story. It feels shabby to give such a negative review, but if there are others like me, I know that they will choose what they read based upon these reviews. And as I was sucked in by the reviews at the time I read it, I feel I must point out why I cannot recommend this book.I will give two stars for an interesting "new" world although it does have echoes of the Codex Alera by Jim Butcher. I found the Kindle edition of this book to be horribly marred by a complete lack of proof reading. If there is a editor for this novel, he/she should be shot and asked to leave the country! The extraneous words, missing words, and overall lack of polish of the basic writing skills smacks strongly of an author who was either too eager to publish the story, or one who simply could not stand to re-read his own work. The characters are reasonable, if a bit slow-witted at times, and the dialogue between the main characters too often dips to a sophomoric level. Having said that, I can forgive some of this as this is just the first of a series (one that I can assure you I will not be reading further), and hopefully the characters will be better developed as it proceeds.SPOILER ALERT - read no further if you plan to read this book!-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Add to this a King who is generally being portrayed as an intelligent, and thoughtful king, but then not only makes an untested, naive, young man one of his generals, but sends him on a mission with a young woman about whom he knows nothing, and gives them none of the vital information they need to complete said mission and avoid any major screw-ups. They all get what they deserve. It simply stretches and bursts any sort of willing suspension of disbelief one can conjure up.I wanted to like this story. However, between the horrible reading experience due to lack of proof reading ("oh, is that what he actually meant to say?!?"), and the all-too-thin plot mechanisms, I cannot recommend this book, and am amazed at those giving the glorious reviews. Did I get a different copy of this book?

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Glad I found it By Anonymous I downloaded this book to my kindle recently, and I actually read it in one day. I'm a slow reader, so I have to be pretty engrossed to finish a book in such a short time. I hadn't read a fantasy book in a while, and I wanted to break away from the more well known authors I was accustomed to. This was a cheap download on the Kindle, so I thought I'd try it.The character and environment descriptions were pretty vivid, which allowed me to feel immersed right away. There are hints of mystery early on in the book, which made me curious about the storyline. However, what really got me interested was the action sequences. They are intense, colorfully described, and scattered throughout the book.I don't want to give away any details, but it is left wide open for a sequel. I don't gravitate toward fantasy novels with whimsical sheep-people, talking books or magic wands. I prefer stories that surround people, with magic and some violence thrown in. This is just the kind of fantasy book that appeals to me, and I'm hoping it continues as a series.Update:The author re-posted this book, to correct the typos. It automatically updated on my Kindle when I synced it. I have not re-read the entire thing yet, but I checked a few places and the errors are gone. It was nice to receive such an accommodating response from the author.
