I related to the main character immensely and the descriptions of his journey created movies in my mind. I was drawn in by the author's profound comments on humanity with contrasting views from multiple characters. Realizing this is the author's first novel makes the insight and talent he writes with even more impressive. While very different from what I normally read, I recommend this book to everyone and am looking forward to more from Chad Ganske. I still find myself thinking about Stanford and really hope there is a sequel.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Read this book By Susanne Douma This novel left me wanting more. Even in its darkness it was a welcome break from the tedium of everyday life. The character of Stanford Samuels is one that everyone can relate to; his struggle to fit in to the perfect society all the while being excluded because of his unique attribute is one that is familiar to everyone's heart. Chad Ganske's debut novel is brilliant in its complexity. He will haunt you with his vision, and if you're like me you will have a hard time waiting for his next installment.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I love Ganske's writing By Louann Carroll Chad Gansky has hit a home run with Idyllic Avenue. I downloaded Kindle for Android and took Idyllic Avenue with me everywhere I went. From Home Depot to Target to JC Penny, I couldn't put my phone down. My husband got a little cranky because he did all the driving. On a more serious note, I love Ganske's writing. He is a young man with a lot of talent and I expect great things from him in the future. His writing style is fluid, the characters are fascinating, and he weaves a tale of sci-fi any hard core science fiction fan is going to love. The imagery Ganske uses draws you in and won't let go. You can see his imagination fired this novel and he peoples his world with souls undergoing the search for life and for an idyllic world. It is the cost for that state of perfectionism that makes his novel so compelling. It is a peek into human nature, love, and loss with opinions and ideas that differ from one person to the other keeping you riveted throughout the entire novel.Ganske should be proud of Idyllic Avenue. This novel comes highly recommended and I am sure (I hope) another is just around the corner.

Excerpt from Self-Culture Through the VocationThere Is to-day a nation-wide awakening to the need of vocational education. We have come to see that if education is to equip adequately for happy and helpful life, it must prepare every individual to take hold somewhere, in work that is worth while, and make an effective contribution. There is no more pathetic spectacle than the cultivated ne'er-do-well - the man of fine appreciation and liberalized spirit, who is unable to do any one thing effectively; and so drifts through life, his refined sensibilities perpetually tortured by economic failure. Education fails if it does not do everything possible to avoid such tragedy.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In RavenShadow, the Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers winner, the Sioux’s rhythmic nature of time is rendered in stunning detail. A tale of lost faith and crowning redemption that is destined to become an American classic.

Before he was born, Joseph was chosen to carry the sacred ways of his Sioux people. But instead of walking the good Red Road of his people, he put his feet on the White Road of basketball and booze, women and the blues.

In following the white man’s road, a road that was not his, Joseph Blue Crow has lost his Lakota heritage and is haunted by the loss. After the inexplicable suicide of the woman he loves, and as he sinks into alcoholism and despair, he stands on the precipice of suicide—a train roaring to his car on the railroad tracks. His best friend tells him, “You got to go on the mountain.”

Blue’s journey takes him on a torturous path. As he is guided by a shaman and a spirit bird, under whose wings lay the shadows of the past, he revisits–and relives, going from the present world to the past–the massacre of Wounded Knee, standing beside his people and family as they fall under the gun and cannon fire.

Will Blue find redemption and healing? That is the center of this extraordinary story.

“With the skill of the fine novelist that he is, Win Blevins takes a modern Oglala Sioux radio jockey into the spirit world of his ancestors, including the stark tragedy of Wounded Knee. RavenShadow has the impact of a hurled war lance.”—Dee Brown, author of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

“Win Blevins has long since won his place among the West’s very best. RavenShadow adds a new dimension to reputation.” —Tony Hillerman

“Best known for Stone Song, his vivid, lyrical novel of the life of Crazy Horse, Blevins here introduces Joseph Blue Crow, a 1990s Lakota Sioux who calls himself a Great White Doubter. Narrator Joseph feels he is red on the outside but white on the inside (“I thought the white way was the way, and the red way should get left behind”).

“Although born a full-blooded Sioux and raised on the reservation, Blue is poised to escape his destined poverty when he gets away to college and discovers booze, basketball, and girls.

“Succumbing to the temptations of this exotic white culture, he discards his Indian heritage, his family, and friends. His experiences as a young man in Seattle are harsh. He encounters overt racism, but it is his girlfriend’s suicide, and the almost simultaneous death of his grandmother, that prompt him to return to the reservation, feeling a traitor to himself and his people. By 1990 he is 40, divorced, an alcoholic disk jockey on a blues radio station in South Dakota.

“Finally, compelled to seek peace by a friend and the spiritual vision of a raven, Blue immerses himself in Sioux tradition, turning to the sweat lodge and the sacred pipe. His quest culminates in a pilgrimage, the annual Big Foot Memorial Ride, which commemorates Wounded Knee, the bloody event the whites call a battle, but the Sioux call a massacre.

“En route, with the help of a medicine man, Blue’s spirit is transported to that bitter cold day in 1890 when the Seventh Cavalry fired on a village of starving Sioux, including some of Blue’s own ancestors. His soul is redeemed by his difficult vision, though the journey may be both painful and beautiful for the reader.”– Publisher’s Weekly

“A strong, thoughtful story of minorities within the dominant white culture.”— Kirkus Reviews

“RavenShadow is a true inspiration.” Wordcraft Circle of Native writers and Storytellers, names Win Blevins Writer of the Year for RavenShadow.

“No one can come away from this magnificent work without feeling humble and meditative about the artificial life he has created. It is a book that transcends man and reminds him of his close relationship to his creator." The EL Paso Times

From Publishers Weekly Best known for Stone Song, his vivid, lyrical novel of the life of Crazy Horse, Blevins here introduces Joseph Blue Crow, a 1990s Lakota Sioux who calls himself a Great White Doubter. Narrator Joseph feels he is red on the outside but white on the inside ("I thought the white way was the way, and the red way should get left behind"). Succumbing to the temptations of the white culture, he discards his Indian heritage, his family and friends. His experiences as a young man in Seattle are harsh, as he encounters overt racism, but it is his black girlfriend's suicide and the almost simultaneous death of his grandmother that prompt him to return to the reservation, feeling a traitor to himself and his people. By 1990 he is 40, divorced, an alcoholic disk jockey on a blues radio station in South Dakota. Finally compelled to seek peace by a friend and a spiritual vision of a raven, Blue immerses himself in Sioux tradition, turning to the sweat lodge and the sacred pipe. His quest culminates in a pilgrimage, the annual Big Foot Memorial Ride, which commemorates Wounded Knee, the bloody event the whites call a battle, but the Sioux call a massacre. En route, with the help of a medicine man, Blue's spirit is transported to that bitter cold day in 1890 when the Seventh Cavalry fired on a village of starving SiouxAincluding some of Blue's own ancestors. His soul is redeemed by his difficult vision, though the journey may be painful for the reader. Blevins's bleak tale of a man caught between two cultures lacks the balance and grace of Stone Song, but it presents a solid indictment of how even today the white world oppresses and persecutes Native Americans. (Nov.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Blevins tells the story of Lakota Indian Joseph Blue Crow's unique midlife crisis, which leads to a journey--both geographical and spiritual--to save his soul. The narrative slips neatly back and forth between the 1990s and the 1890s without the least bit of confusion. Blue has managed to get himself fired from his radio disc jockey job; he's too drunk to do himself any good with Sallee Walks Straight; and he's totally confused about who he is, who he was supposed to be, and who he yet might become. That's when his friend Emile Gray Feather talks to him about "goin' on the mountain" --returning to the old ways, to his cultural roots, and rediscovering the path he was meant to follow instead of the oil-slick road to perdition down which he has willingly strayed. Blue finds himself, but the reader finds even more in Blevins' tales of Lakota lore and his reexamination of one of the darkest episodes in American history. Blevins' prose is razor sharp, his characters are clearly defined, and his heart, like so many, is at Wounded Knee. An outstanding novel. Budd Arthur

From Kirkus Reviews Visions continue to drive Blevins's fiction, whether the focus is Crazy Horse (Stone Song, 1995) or, here, a Sioux disc jockey who travels the hard Indian road of depression and alcoholism before finding his roots in the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890. Joseph Blue Crow, raised by his grandparents on the Pine Ridge Reservation to follow the traditional ways, has instead followed a career path to Seattle, lured by the dark promise of Delphine, a sharp black lawyer raised there by a prominent white family. When she commits suicide, Blue comes home despondent; his despair ultimately leads to reckless, suicidal behavior and the loss of his job as a local DJ. His closest friend saves him from self-destruction, and slowly he resumes the path originally intended for him by joining the centennial Big Foot Memorial Ride and taking a series of spirit journey that will transport him directly to the wintry moment when Big Foot's people, among them Blue's ancestors, are slaughtered by the US Army. A strong, thoughtful story of minority suppression within the dominant white culture, but Blue's visions threaten to upstage his real-life struggle and lessen the storys dramatic impact. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. RavenShadow is a true inspiration By Marguerite P. Nico I enjoyed reading this book. It gave me an indepth insight into the world of Native American spirituality. I especially liked the way Win Blevins shifted from the present to the past. He didn't make you confused by the shift. There was a lot of information about the massacre at Wounded Knee that I didn't even know. Imagine being a Lakota and not knowing much about your ancestors. That was Joseph Blue Crow. He didn't know anything about his ancestors or why Wounded Knee was so difficult to be near. When he finally understood where his family came from, and how what happened to them at Wounded Knee, he was able to overcome the problem with alcoholism. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Native American history and ways. I rate it at 5 stars.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Taking the Red Road By Mamalinde The American Indian perspective, mystically set out in the eyes of a contemporary, educated Native American. The author uses impartial and even handed brush strokes to describe the war within the man and the richness of the red road vs. the poverty of the reservation, and the nearly impossible campaign for balance. The struggles and lapses are well chronicled, as are the historical references. Glimpses of humor, and thoughtful and deliberate weaving of facts, make this a bit more than just a novel. Thought provoking and intense, this reader was enriched by the experience.

Columbine. Virginia Tech. Sandy Hook. For most Americans, these names conjure images of violence and feelings of terror or deep sadness. While news reports of rising crime rates build up each day and all-too-frequent occurrences of school-based violence cause panic and fear, policy-makers and school administrators have scrambled to ensure that students are safe and protected in the classroom, in many cases by increasing security, arming school-based police, and putting surveillance systems in place. But looking to the past and examining the ways that humans have responded to novel dangers and extreme situations throughout history may provide us with a better idea of ways that we can adapt ourselves to the threats we now face, particularly in school settings. This book analyzes the response techniques, collaborative models, and personal characteristics that helped individuals from prisoners of concentration camps to kidnapping victims escape their situations and provides modern-day tactics for both responding to and preventing violence in schools.

In today’s society where violence is growing and educators need to look to the safety of their students as well as their intellectual growth, it is imperative that a plan be put into place to anticipate the need for survival of students and pupils alike. Examining past success situations and how they were utilized to promote positive outcomes is the first and needed step to prevent needless deaths of our innocent children and educators alike. I would recommend this book as a guide to exam the fortitude of human nature and evaluate ways to handle extreme situations today should they arise. It is a diving platform into discussion and communication on a negative topic that needs addressing.

Review By Angel Alejandro When you first started this series, the story was really good, you've really grown as an author, in comparison to the first time I read your book 3 or 2 years ago. You've really demonstrated your growth and potential in this new version of Blood Prize. Details are more vivid, thoughts and events are better centralized as well. The characters have grown too and we can better understand them and their feelings. Pieces and questions which arose in the first version are now connected and answers have been provided. You've allowed us to developed a more in depth connection with them and overall this is a great piece of work.

But with this book i wanted to- no needed to would be more accurate. The book is beyond anything i could have ever imagined. It has you on the edge of your seat from the very first line. Its allowing you to feel as if your in the main character's shoes, That what hes going through- what hes feeling you are too. If you want a book that makes you want to laugh, to cry, to scream, to hurt, to feel like love exist no matter what you are human, demon, mage whatever than this is the book for you. The sex scenes are hot, and it makes you feel as if its the first time all over again. I will read this book over and over- it will be one that i will make sure to keep close to my heart. The editing done since it first appeared on wattpad was superb, I hope that the author decides to publish more books. Because i for one will be the first in line to get a copy! I just hope that this book may one day make its debut into paperback or the likes so that i can have it in my personal library in my home. I cant wait to see How Zero continues to thrive and figure out love and everything else.

This book was the first of her book that I read and it was marvelous not only the story but the characters and their way of developing and growing up as the story progresses. Though Ban is a handful I love him and his crooked way of showing his love :)I can't wait for book three, I'm really looking forward to reading it.

Educating for Sustainability presents fundamental principles, theoretical foundations, and practical suggestions for integrating education for sustainability into existing schoolwide systems and programs, organized in three sections: Principles of Education for Sustainability; Fostering a Sustainability Worldview; Learning and Thinking for Sustainability.

Designed for teachers and teachers-to-be at all grade levels and across the content areas, the focus is on professional practices and pedagogical approaches rather than specific topics often associated with sustainability. Each chapter includes a number of supports to help readers monitor and improve their own professional practice and to deepen their own sustainability wordview, including textboxes in most chapters that provide more detailed or specialized information and a range of application exercises. All chapters include several "Consider This" activities and an "Extend Your Professional Knowledge" feature. Directly grounded in K-12 classroom practice, this book presents useful and realistic information for teachers looking to reorient their work toward sustainability and help their students develop new thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Inspiring and Usable Guide to Educating for Sustainability By ann Having read many books on sustainability, education, and educating for sustainability, I can say that this is one of the most concise, clear, and usable books out there. Dr. Nolet lays out a straightforward path to integrating sustainability: building a sustainability worldview, key big ideas, teaching practices, and decision-making. I especially appreciate that he includes happiness and well-being, and focuses on a positive future focus. The sections on justice, peace and collaboration are as important as the ones on environmental topics. The message is that we can make change and create a better world - and here's how you do it.

Anna Perrault likes to write in cemeteries – little does she know she’s not alone.

Anna Perrault is a writer who finds herself unable to write. At the local cemetery, she encounters Jacob Hoffner, the ghost of one of her ancestors. He empathizes with Anna, and sees a way for her to live out his purpose and her own. Anna embarks on a journey into Jacob’s past, where she discovers tales of Masonic rituals, murder, redemption and hope. In modern day Cincinnati, Anna battles inner demons and struggles to find a way to leave the past behind and enlighten her future.

Legacy is the story of two people trying to leave their mark on the world. As the two stories converge, can Anna find her way out of the darkness into the light?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well written, entertaining, and thoroughly enjoyable novel. By Frank D “Legacy” is a well written, entertaining, and thoroughly enjoyable novel. The trials and tribulations of the two main characters, having lived a century and a half apart, are nicely woven together. This reader felt sympathy, empathy, and concern as the author developed their lives in verse, making them come alive and feel real. Through easy to read short chapters the author pulls you in, cultivating a need to know what will happen next. The characters and the storyline are nicely developed, feeding the reader descriptors’ that most can relate to. Who hasn’t had “ketchup stained jeans”, sung “Walking on Sunshine” rather loudly, or “rummaged through a hamper for something acceptable to wear” in a pinch. This is not “War and Peace”, nor will it take you 14 years and a tremendous amount of work to suffer through. It is an easy and enjoyable read which I did in two sitting over two days. In the end, as I believe the author intended, I could “feel the light” painted nicely in words as Anna’s, and Jacob’s, and ……….’s lives are threaded together. This is a well written summer time read for most, including older teens. There is however one casual sexual encounter having life altering effects which are nicely handled. Parents should be aware of this up front. All in all, very enjoyable; I found myself wanting to read more by resigned to the wait for the authors next novel which I sincerely hope will be presented soon.Frank D.

New Author Pens Thoughtful Legacy By Sharon Watts I was immediately drawn into the distinctly separate yet beautifully entwined journeys of Anna and Jacob. Despite our age, gender, or the century to which we are born, aren't we all looking for a sense of purpose in our lives?I would recommend this book for young adults and adults interested in historical fiction, a beach weekend, fans of Henry David Thoreau, or a ladies book club. It is written with a sense of humor, but can also be thought-provoking, lending itself to good discussion.Legacy is a compelling reminder that the legacy we leave behind is not based solely on the obstacles we face or the decisions we make in life, but ultimately influenced by the love, encouragement, faith, and support of our friends and family.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A book with a book By Sandra Neville I liked how the story contained verifiable facts. It made me look up a few things and want to know more. It was complete and I would tell you how, but would`t want to be a spoiler. I would recommend this to fans of Ohio and Cincinnati history.

The Total Fly Fishing Manual: 307 Essential Skills and Tips, by Joe Cermele, The Editors of Field and Stream

About the Author Joe Cermele started his career in outdoor journalism in 2004 covering fishing tournaments for a local magazine in his home state of New Jersey. In 2005 while attending Rider University, he became an intern at "Salt Water Sportsman" magazine, joining the editorial staff full time that same year after graduation. In 2008, he moved to sister publication "Field & Stream," where he was named Fishing Editor in 2011. His writing appears monthly in the magazine, he blogs weekly on "Field & Stream"'s website, and also hosts and produces "Field & Stream"'s "Hook Shots," an award-winning web-based fishing show with a punk rock edge. Cermele has fished all over the country and abroad, but when he's not traveling on assignment, you can find him on his boat chasing tuna and striped bass off the Jersey coast, pitching tubes to smallmouth bass on the Delaware River, or flyfishing for trout in New York's Catskill Mountains.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. TIP 104: TIE A FIVE-MINUTE FLY   The Woolly Bugger is the perfect pattern for a learning fly-tyer. It’s big, so you can see what you’re doing, and it involves only a few inexpensive materials. Even more importantly, it’s a proven producer for trout, bass, and almost anything in between.  STEP 1 Wrap black 6/0 thread along the length of a size 10 streamer hook. Always wrap away from yourself, over the top of the hook. If you want a beadhead bugger, slide the bead on the hook before starting your wraps.  STEP 2 Secure one large black marabou feather at the front of the hook, and wrap all the way back to the bend. You want to leave enough feather exposed to create a tail.  STEP 3 Connect a 2-inch piece of fine copper wire by the tail, and also a strand of black chenille. Wrap the thread forward, then the chenille, but leave the wire behind. Tie off the chenille with a half hitch.  STEP 4 Now tie on a saddle hackle feather (black or grizzly), palmer it back (wrap with spacing), and secure this with a couple of wraps of the wire. Trim the leftover hackle. Wrap the wire forward, and tie it off with the thread. Trim the excess wire.  STEP 5 Finish the fly with a tapered thread head. Whip- finish, apply a dab of head cement, and you’re done.

For the novice or someone thinking about fly fishing, this is indispensable. It covers the many facets and disciplines of fly fishing (trout, salmon, bass, saltwater etc.) has great recommendations on various flies, and reminds those of us who have been fishing for a while of the little things we may have missed or forgot. Every time you read it you will gain something.

It is full of tips, ideas and good hints that everyone can use, beginner to experienced. I bought the e book and the only downside I can find is this. Throughout the book are recommended flies along with a thumbnail size picture. The pictures are very small and I couldn't really see much of the fly. When I double clicked on the thumbnail to make it bigger it pixelated so bad I couldn't see anything there either.

This book is a love story, and the dramatic tale of the determined, desperate journey of the Cheyenne people from Indian Territory back to their Montana homeland and the Powder River. The northern Cheyenne still call the Powder River country their sacred home. But now, penned up far to the south in so-called Indian Territory, the remnants of that once-mighty nation are growing feeble and dying. To survive, they must battle their way across 1,500 miles to their ancestral home, fending off pursuit by thousands of well-armed soldiers. In that outnumbered band are Adam Smith Maclean, born both white and Cheyenne, and his wife Elaine, a New Englander determined to stand by Adam and his desperate, daring people Cheyenne family. Join them on their trek through the hostile heart of the white man’s West toward the welcoming banks of Powder River. Reviews “Win Blevins is as good a storyteller as this country has.” —Dale Wasserman, author of Man of La Mancha “POWERFUL and FULL OF FEELING. Very few writers are able to put the reader inside the mind of Native people as Win Blevins does."—Norman Zollinger, author of The Road to Santa Fe

The Powder River (Wild Rivers West) (Volume 2), by Win Blevins

About the Author I came naturally by my yen to wander far places, physical, imaginary, and spiritual... -"Win Blevins" Win Blevins, of Cherokee, Irish and Welsh descent, is from a family that was on the move, always west. Win's childhood was spent roaming, his dad a railroad man. Win went to school in St. Louis, and the family spent summers in little towns along the tracks of the railroads. He listened to the whistles blow at night and wanted to go wherever the trains went.Seldom has a young man been in more of a hurry. Using scholarships, Win ran through a succession of colleges, receiving his master's degree, with honors, in English from Columbia University. He taught at Purdue University and Franklin College, then received a fellowship to attend USC. Win became a newspaperman - a music, theater, and film critic for both major Los Angeles papers. In 1972 he took the big leap-he quit his job to write out his passions-exploring and learning wild places-full time. His greatest passion of all has been to set the stories of these places, their people and animals, colors and smells, into books.Win climbed mountains for ten years. A fluke blizzard caught him on a mountaintop and froze his feet, an end to climbing mountains, but not to exploring them. He's rafted rivers in the west, particularly the Snake and the San Juan, and was briefly a river guide. His love of the great Yellowstone River gave him a fine appreciation for the people who first loved these wild places. Along the way, Win lost the use of his legs and learned to sail, deciding a boat was a good place for a man without legs. He regained the use of his legs, and maintains his love of the open seas. His first book, "Give Your Heart to the Hawks", is still in print after thirty years. Other works include "Stone Song", a novel about Crazy Horse, for which he won the 1996 Mountains and Plains Booksellers Award and the 1996 Spur Award. He's written 15 books, including a Dictionary of the American West, numerous screenplays and magazine articles. He lives quietly in the canyon country of Utah. His passions grow with time-his wife Meredith, the center of his life, their five kids and grandkids. Classical music, baseball, roaming red rock mesas in the astonishing countryside, playing music He considers himself blessed to be one of the people creating new stories about the west, and is proud to call himself a member of the world's oldest profession-storyteller.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Not just another list of agents By Charlene The first thing to consider when thinking about picking up this guide is that you're not "just" getting a thorough, detailed, well-researched listing of the agents currently operating in the publishing industry. There's tons of extras, if you will. 100 pages of them.First page reviews of submissions by agents give prospective writers (I'm guessing these folks will be the ones most apt to pick up this book) an idea of what the people they're querying are looking for. Several debut authors from different genres relate their experiences, how they found their agent, advice, etc. How-To sections explore writing queries and the dreaded synopsis (not that queries are a walk in the park). Even advice on creating writing platforms, the things to look for in new agents, what genre to pick for your novel...there's just a wealth of information for the writer looking to break into the business. The editor, Chuck Sambuchino, and the contributors he's selected, from writers to agents, know the business looks daunting from the outside, and indeed the very idea of looking for an entry into publishing can be intimidating. That's why this guide is organized as efficiently as possible and packed, packed, PACKED to the brim with helpful information. The questions a future writer is thinking...Chuck's thought of them too and tried to provide the most helpful answers possible. If you're thinking of breaking into the business...there just isn't a better book to look for as a resource. The advice and information is worth the price alone, then there's the 150 pages of agent listings and beyond that a look into tons of writing conferences that take place around the country and what they individually offer. Before you send one query, grab this book. Really. It's a fantastic resource and pays dividends so many times over.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. After waiting a month after the book version came out ... By T After waiting a month after the book version came out for the Kindle edition, I made several inquiries by both email and phone (the answering machine either would cut me off or told me to leave a message, something I didn't want to do since when I reached a live person, they kept asking me for all personal info except my shirt size before telling me I'd have to call another number to answer my original yes or no question), I finally got an email that they "think" it's being done. The ebook version is, of course, preferred because you can click on the agency listing to go directly to their website or query them directly from your device. Finally downloaded the Kindle version and the spelling errors are so distracting it's hard to concentrate on the listings. Ly Lr Children's Literary should be LR Children's Literary, S Gina Maccoby should be Gina Maccoby, and Ry Macgregor Agency should be just Macgregor Agency. This isn't just select observations, this was 3 listings in a row, and representative of almost every listing I came across in both the name of the agency and in the body of their descriptions/requirements. I understand the publisher offers literary services of some kind for writers. Really? Maybe they can make you as big a writer as My Mr Margaret Mitchell and her SS Gone With the Wind. Seriously though, when will the book I paid 20 bucks for be updated with at least basic proofing so I can offer more stars?

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Good but with some reservations By REELDOC This is a nice compendium of the literary agents and what is involved in getting one. There are certain limitations. For example, under the speciality sections, (in my case health and medicine nonfiction), agents are listed who are closed to new authors. This lack of attention to detail is disappointing. After paying for the book I would expect the author to do some basic and easy on-line research to see which agents accept new authors and or unsolicited queries. Otherwise why list them at all?

An exciting historical novel which takes place during the Seven Years' War. Among the great wars of history there are few, if any, instances of so long and successfully sustained a struggle, against enormous odds, as that of the Seven Years' War, maintained by Prussia--then a small and comparatively insignificant kingdom--against Russia, Austria, and France simultaneously, who were aided also by the forces of most of the minor principalities of Germany.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Looking for a history By Conrad Bauer This is an interesting book. However, it is really written in the form of a novel. The presentation is through the experiences of a young Scotsman who serves in Frederick the Great's Prussian Army. It is accurate as far as a novel centering around man can be, but I had wanted a general history of the Seven Years War.

The Land of the Blue Flower (Annotated), by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Review "A beautiful boy, the offspring of royal parents, grows up and is crowned king of a sad land that only he can lead to the path of peace and prosperity.

Hodgson Burnett has received much praise over the last century for "Little Lord Fauntleroy" and "The Secret Garden," but this story has slumbered in obscurity for more than 80 years. It was resuscitated by Griffith, who received a dusty copy from a friend a few years back.

The book has a New Age message of peace and cooperation that's in keeping with its publisher's usual fare, but no one can deny the timeliness of the story's message: Anger deflects us from the important tasks we face." -- Press-Telegram, February 7, 1994"Sure to put stars into a young person's eyes." -- NQ, NAPRA ReVIEW, Holiday Issue 1993"The Land of the Blue Flower" by Frances Hodgson Burnett, a classic story which has been out of print since 1938, weaves the magical tale of Amor, a young king who is orphaned. The book develops the theme of living in harmony with nature and demonstrates the healing power of love." --Science of Mind, August 1994

From the Publisher To our readers: The books we publish are our contribution to an emerging world based on cooperation rather than on competition, on affirmation of the human spirit rather than on self-doubt, and on the certainty that all humanity is connected. Our goal is to touch as many lives as possible with a message of hope for a better world.--Hal and Linda Kramer, Publishers

About the Author Frances Hodgson Burnett was a born storyteller. Even as a young child, her greatest pleasure was in making up stories and acting them out, using her dolls as characters. She wrote over forty books, including the classic A Little Princess, also illustrated by Tasha Tudor.

"Blue Flowers" = Life, Love & Beauty By A Customer This charming fairytale by the author of the beloved _Secret Garden_ is not just for children, but is a kind of "spiritual tonic" for folks of all ages. Ever since discovering HJKramer's magical edition, I have turned to _Blue Flower_ during times of spiritual or physical depletion and have always felt uplifted and enlivened by its positive message and exquisite artwork. The book came to me in a strange, "Heaven-directed" way, during a time of immense grief over the death of a relative. I was ripe for its insightful messages that, "If you fill your mind with a beautiful thought, there will be no room for an ugly one"; and "There is no time for anger..." I have always been bolstered by this particular edition, so gracefully illustrated by Judith Ann Griffith, and over the years have gifted a few special souls, adults and children alike, with copies of this delightful book. The "blue flowers" at the heart of the story have gradually become a sort of shorthand-code between me and cherished friends/relatives; and on special occasions, we sometimes exchange "blue flowers" as a colorful reminder of truths taught in Frances Hodgson Burnett's tale. The "blue-flower code" is simple and speaks directly to the heart, saying, "We choose love, life, and joy over fear, bitterness, and grudges." (Given current global upheavals and conflicts, maybe certain folks in High Places would do well to read this little book and internalize its simple truths.)_The Land of the Blue Flower_ is very enthusiastically recommended for hearts of all ages, and Kramer's gorgeous edition is sure to become a family favorite.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. An enchanted story which affirms beauty and life. By A Customer Though the story carries a brilliant message of hope for us all, if we can affirm our connection with the earth, it is the lovely illustrations that bring home this heart-felt promise. On almost every page of this classic tale the artist has embellished the authors words with delightful and imaginative representations of the story. For a timeless message of hope treat your children and yourself to this book.

18 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful story, ugly binding... By Kimi Bee My daughter fell in love with this book after checking it out at the library. The version she read was a beautiful picture book with pages and pictures as wonderful as the story. She had earned a treat and only wanted this book.Let me just say how disappointing it is to open a box and find a small, flimsy paperback with not one, single picture! The cover pictured is the actual book cover and inside is small type covering pages with small margins. Only half of the pages are even printed; the book ends just over half-way through the pages of the book. This is a beautiful story, and I realize that this is a rare publication, but it is still a letdown to find such a book especially at this price.
