By Shandle Blaha Canine is a unique take on the world of werewolves, the story sucks you right in and you won't want to put it down and when your done you'll want more. The author's cast of characters are so full of depth and so real you feel like you know them, she even manages to bring heart to a werewolf!
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A horror story that returns to the basics By LP In Canine, Kaitlin Bergfield has mastered all the aspects I look for in a supernatural novel. She fills her book with interesting, unqiue, and wonderfully flawed and vulnerable characters. She has a deft grasp on the rules of her world. Most importantly, Bergfield writes masterfully with a light-heartedness that hides the horror which flows in an undercurrent throughout the book. Canine follows the story of a werewolf who chooses, for various reasons, to live his life in wolf form. Moving constantly between human owners, the protagonist is finally forced to confront his identity and what it means to be a werewolf when his secret is discovered by his latest "roommate." If you've been missing gravity from supernatural fiction, then this is the book for you. What is most compelling about Bergfield's writing is that every decision a character makes has a heavy weight to it. There are consequences for screw-ups in Canine. For too long supernatural novels have addressed the monster world with a casualness that ruins the atmosphere and makes it hard to become invested when things finally go wrong. Bergfield, while solidly grounding the fantasy in a highly logical world, returns to the basics by bringing back a sense of dread and fear to her characters, despite the fact that they are placed in very mundane settings. The stakes are always high, even in a seemingly low-stakes situation. If you are looking for a nonstop action-packed thriller then this is not the book for you. Bergfield takes her good time establishing her characters and exploring the way they interact with each other in their day-to-day routines. It is a slow-paced, careful style of writing that may not appeal to those looking for something intensely dark and gritty from the get-go. However, if you think you can handle taking your time, you are in for a treat. Because the most thrilling part of Canine is that Bergfield does everything in her power to convince you that this is not a horror story. Only when you're curled up in a tiny ball in the corner do you realize the true nature of what she's written. Most of the book is grounded in the logical and the mundane, so when the dark stuff hits, as it does from time to time, it hits that much harder because of the contrast from the relative lightness of the majority of the book. I started reading thinking I was getting a sophisticated sort of Twilight. What I got instead, to my horror and utter delight, was Dracula. If you want to read a smart, funny, scary, all-around thoroughly well-thought-out book that puts the horror back into monsters, then this is the book for you. Intelligent urban fantasy that leaves you begging for more By XXm0rt The description of this book may lead you to think it's just another urban fantasy in a genre that's pretty saturated with mediocrity, but nothing could be further from the truth. Bergfields novel has a depth and intelligence I've rarely run into, as well as incredibly well defined characters that stay true to themselves (which is so rare to find in most media these days). Her characters have flaws but they grow and evolve and in the process win you over completely. I've read this book a few times now and its one of those rare books that seems better with each reading, and even on the most recent go through, I still had trouble putting it down and found myself sneaking reading breaks in at work. The ending seems to promise more to come so I'm eagerly awaiting a sequel, but until then I guess I'll just have to be satisfied with reading through the volume one more time.
