I translated the first chapter (it's not terribly hard French By Gentle Reader This little book was assigned for an advanced French class I am taking this fall. We were supposed to read and discuss one chapter per week. I translated the first chapter (it's not terribly hard French, although there are several military terms I didn't know) and...could. Not. Stop. I stayed up until 3 a.m., until I finished the entire work. I was simply stunned by the purity of the prose, the compelling storyline, the richly-drawn characters. The horrors of war, the complexity of human relations, the bonds (strange, in this case) that can form between a dog and its master---all expressed beautifully and heartbreakingly. And yet, such redemption at the end. A truly stellar book, worthy of anyone's Top Ten List. I have not gone into much detail, because it would be too easy to let "spoilers" slip, and the central mystery of the main character, Morlac, is revealed "de goutte a' goutte" so artfully that the reader is inexorably drawn, drawn, drawn deeper into the work. And yes, they all lived happily ever after! If you are like me, and avoid "sad animal" stories like *Black Beauty* and "Ole Yeller*, fear not. Le chien ne meurt pas a' la fin!

A thoughtful post World War I story about a soldier and his dog.
