What the best ones do is give the reader an insight into the culture of the storyteller - what their daily lives were like, what they feared, how they interacted, and what they hoped for. While this book could stand a better editor - it's full of typos and incorrect words - the stories are great, and the author certainly gives a picture of mid 20th century appalachian life.
