This is an elite collections of important and intelligent quotations in English through the centuries. It can be confi dently described as representing the highest concentration of wisdom, wit & sensibility ever written or spoken in the English language or tradition, ranging from the Venerable Bede and Chaucer to Mark Twain, Einstein and Feynman. It abounds in sparkling and memorable thoughts and expressions from Great Britain, the United States, and the Commonwealth as well as from various other Englishspeaking countries and peoples. The quotations have been thoughtfully selected for their instructive and entertainment value and as vehicles toward an all-round higher education and culture in both the sciences and the humanities. Quotations from a number of fi elds, encompassing history, politics, literature, economics and the physical and life sciences are included. This book will allow the reader to consort with, and listen to the ‘voices’ of, some of the most intelligent, amusing, well-spoken and even out-spoken people of the past and the present. James Boswell, the great Scots biographer of The Life of Samuel Johnson, is said to have longed for the London coach that would take him to “the juiciness of the English mind”. This publication will certainly take you to a much wider and longer domain of intellectual and verbal excellence and juiciness. It provides an adventure of ideas in the tradition of the British and, more generally, the European Enlightenment, celebrating the western values of freedom, reason, humaneness, tolerance and progress. It is addressed to all lovers of original thinking, fascinating knowledge, ingenious conversation, and elegant language and style. It constitutes a delightful way to enrich your general knowledge and to enhance your intellectual, linguistic and conversational prowess. It can also serve as an ideal aid and guide, for students of various disciplines and ages, toward speaking more interestingly and even impressively and toward writing fi ner and more well-argued essays. A concise edition of this book is also available under the title Great Quotations in English.

A Scholar's Book of Fascinating Trivia By Miranda Joyce Childe Superior Quotations to Educate and Amuse:The highest concentration of wisdom, wit and sensibility in English through the centuriesComprehensive Edition, Edited by Sofron A. Sofron (2015) As a retired English professor and lifelong student of the arts and humanities, I was delighted to receive this book through the Early Reviewers group of LibraryThing. The book is comprised of Mr. Sofron’s choice quotations spanning the centuries from The Venerable Bede to Christopher Barnatt, circa 700 AD to the present. The scope of the entries is ambitious; the selections, as Sofron states in the preface, “provide(s) an adventure of ideas…celebrating the western values of freedom, reason, humaneness, tolerance and progress; the editor’s objective is to “enhance…intellectual, linguistic and conversational prowess”, and, more generally, to aid students of various disciplines to speak, write and argue essays better and more interestingly. It comes as no surprise that Sofron holds degrees in various disciplines from prestigious institutions and has held academic positions in Europe and the United States. I would venture to guess that this tome is a compendium of vast knowledge acquired throughout his academic career, as well as a collection of personal favorites gleaned from his lifelong love of reading. I spent the better part of three hours browsing through each time period, (I’ll explain what I mean by that below), and reading quotes from authors and speakers I knew or admired. I found something more than I had found in other books of “quotations” I had on my shelf. On the whole, the entries were much more interesting than either Bartlett’s collection or even more current collections created for the writer and public speaker of our day. Sofron’s choices were more representative of the subject’s zeitgeist. We get a sense of the persona of the quoted, at least as measured by the accepted opinion of the supporters of the great books concept. I am not offended by the concept that a defined set of books form a solid foundation for the students of today. In my experience, the deeper their understanding of underlying cultural structures, the greater capacity they show for evaluating more modern and multi-cultural additions to the corpus. Up to now, I have included a lot of information about who I am as a person and a reader. I do this not just out of an inflated idea of my importance; rather, to better illustrate to whom this collection will speak. Sofron’s chosen form is best suited to a reader who already has an advanced familiarity with the common delineations of western thought; i.e., Medieval, Renaissance, Enlightenment, et al. For example, a reader who already knows who The Venerable Bede is and to which century he contributed will be able to get the most out of this compilation. Most students do not have such knowledge, so while this book offers a cornucopia of rich pickings, many readers will have trouble finding what they need here. One of the things that contributes to its inaccessibility for the average reader is the lack of any list of topics included. The table of contents divides the quotes by time periods not themes. Section 1, for example, includes material “From Bede to Shakespeare”, Section 6 covers W.B. Yeats to Franklin Roosevelt. As you can see, without a working knowledge of the arc of philosophy through the ages, this grouping is opaque, at best. There is an Index of Names at the back of the book, but this is only useful if you know whose quotes you are looking for. For the literate user this poses no obstacle; however, if Sofron truly intended for this book to benefit students of various disciplines, he has not achieved his aim. Despite my issues with Sofron’s decisions as to classification of the quotes, I found the contents truly delightful and enlightening. It is a book I will keep nearby to delve into from time to time for a bit of inspiration. At the risk of sounding crude, it is the perfect “bathroom book”; one you can pick up at any time and enjoy without thinking too hard about how or when you will use what you read. Dipping in from time to time will certainly expand your horizons, or as Sofron says in his preface, “The quotations have been thoughtfully selected for their instructive and entertainment value and as vehicles toward an all-round higher education and culture in both the sciences and the humanities.” I cannot argue with that. This is exactly what you will get in this book. If you are interested in a more concise version, you will find it under the title Great Quotations in English. But, I say, in this case, more is more. I will get countless hours of enjoyment for years to come from this unique collection.

I anticipated yet another book that listed quotations by topic/subject and offered a quick reference; however, this one is not a typical resource of that sort. Instead this book offers a glimpse of history through quotations. Initially I found that a little odd, but when I allowed myself to simply read the quotations and, in the process, take a reader's stroll through history, I found I totally enjoyed it! Is it a reference resource list of quotations? Probably not. Is it an enjoyable read? Yes, it is!
