Patriot Games meets The Fourth Protocol in this riveting story of modern-day nuclear terrorism.

In 2003, the world watched as coalition forces toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, then searched—unsuccessfully—for the weapons of mass destruction they were certain existed.

None were ever found, but they do exist. On the eve of the invasion, a handful of nuclear weapons was smuggled out of Iraq and hidden in the most unlikely of places—Iran. Now, as the threat of WMDs fades into a late-night punch line, a shadowy Iranian faction waits for the perfect moment to unleash Saddam Hussein’s nuclear legacy on the West.

Brendan McHugh, a Navy SEAL, meets a mysterious Iranian diplomat on a raid in Iraq. His former girlfriend and FBI linguist discovers a link to Iran among a group of captured jihadis. And pulling it all together is a CIA analyst who can’t forget about Saddam Hussein’s WMDs—even if it costs him his career.

An Interview with the Co-Authors:

Q: What makes WMD different from other thrillers?

WEAPONS OF MASS DECEPTION is co-written by two US Navy veterans, one a submarine officer and the other a career naval intel officer. This an alternate history thriller that answers the greatest mystery of our generation: what happened to Saddam Hussein’s WMDs?

We write about the threats of our time. When we were growing up, the threat was the Soviet Union, now it’s non-state actors, sleeper cell terrorists, and nuclear proliferation. Our characters, a Navy SEAL, a CIA analyst, and an FBI agent, go up against Iranian hardliners, Hezbollah operatives, and sleeper cells that have infiltrated our borders. If you're a fan of Jack Ryan, Mitch Rapp, or John Milton, WMD will be right up your alley.

WEAPONS OF MASS DECEPTION takes you all over the world: from the desert of Iraq to the seat of power in Tehran, from the ranches of Argentina to the American heartland in Minneapolis.

Q: What order do I read the WMD series in?

In addition to WMD, there’s a companion story called DEATH OF A PAWN about a terrorist in a South American sleeper cell that is called on to do the bidding of his Iranian masters. You can get a free copy at davidbruns.com.

The next book in the WMD Files comes out in May 2016.

Very Tom Clancyesque in its approach as a political-military thriller, the narrative drives forward as the authors carefully build the narrative tension to a perfect climax. And though some of that tension owes to the basic plot device of the very real threat of Iranian radicals detonating a nuclear weapon (and, perhaps, starting World War III), the real cause is something cleverly concealed right out in the open: excellent character development. Whether we’re getting to know the “good guys” and their human foibles or the “bad guys” and their internal motivations, the authors do a great job making us care that it’s the everyday people we’re reading about, not the extraordinary events, that really matter.Bruns and Olson bring their armed services experiences to the table, and doing so lends a depth and breadth of credibility to this alternative-history tale. Never once did I feel like I was reading a Handbook of Navy Life or Cliff’s Notes on Being a CIA Operative. On the contrary, their deft handling of the everyday experiences—both personal and professional—of intelligence operatives and military personnel was so well done, I actually found myself relating to their characters *more* while learning about covert operations around the world. In short, I felt closer to these characters than I’ve ever felt to James Bond.A real strength of WMD is its narrative approach—alternating between the protagonists in one chapter to the antagonists in another, the novel plays to the reader’s intelligence (rather than insults it) by giving balanced perspectives on the events as they unfold. The authors never reduce their characters into “white hat” and “black hat” caricatures. Rather, they present fully fleshed-out, three-dimensional human beings on both sides.Fast-paced, well-researched, with characters you not only relate to but care about, Weapons of Mass Deception is a superb military thriller.

Intense political thriller that offers a fascinating insight to a modern day mystery By Amazon Customer There were scenes of action in Weapons of Mass Deception when I just knew that the two authors must have had so much fun plotting out this book. Their real-life military experience shines through, adding even more credibility to a political thriller that sometimes tracks so closely to recent events I began to wonder if the authors possessed a crystal ball at the time of writing. The level of research gave me a greater appreciation of the complexities of life and politics in the Middle East than I had before. The story captures snapshots of the lives of six flawed and interesting characters covering a wide spectrum of professional and personal developments across several years, the steady pace enlivened with intense scenes of military action and personal drama. Every now and again the lives of these six characters cross over, enough for the reader to understand the significance, sometimes ahead of the characters creating an air of looming suspense. Always in the background is the menacing threat that the world is about to discover the whereabouts of some famous missing nuclear weapons.I loved how the three baddies in this story were given equal billing with WMD’s heroes. The back stories of Hashem Aboud, Rafiq Roshed, and U.S. Navy officer Brendan McHugh are particularly well drawn. For me, Brendan was the main hero, oh so hopeless with his personal relationships, but I found myself as much immersed in Rafiq’s personal story as I was rooting for Brendan and FBI Special Agent Liz Soroush to get their act together.Beautifully written, convincingly detailed, and professionally edited, WMD weaves global politics and fundamentalism with love and hard-hitting action, all against a backdrop of real-world events. A well thought out thriller, but also a fascinating and scary exploration of what might have been!Highly recommended!(I received an advance review copy in exchange for my honest opinion.)

By Charly The level of detail and background work the authors have done regarding a country - Finland - that ultimately is not the central setting of the book is deeply impressive (yes, I live in Finland). As a reader (of advance copy) this level of attention to getting the smallest of details correct contribute to making the story feel both 'right' and 'real'. Whether you like to read thrillers, military action yarns or alternate history, this book will grab you from the get go. If you've ever wanted to get a fictional but perfectly realistic glimpse into how diplomacy, military and intelligence threads are woven into the tapestry we call foreign policy - pick this up for yourself or a friend!I'm already looking forward to hearing if/when the next in what must become a series comes out - it would be a shame to let this level of character development, intrigue and relationship (dys) function be unused to entertain readers for years to come. Please write it quickly! There's got to be a rogue nuke or two that got waylaid when Ukraine gave them up during the early 1990s....
