Ships are disappearing in subspace. Traders, rebels, pirates, and even military vessels are losing their way in the Big Nothing that makes space travel possible. Deep-cover agent Sethran Kada joins the investigation after his own navigator, Ciela, barely escapes the void with her mind intact. It soon becomes clear that this subspace trap is more than some natural phenomenon. Seth’s search for answers leads him to a brutal penal colony on the brink of revolt, and uncovers a plot to destroy an entire planet. When evidence points to the return of the dangerous subspace entities known as Dyads, Air Command mobilizes to annihilate the threat at any cost. Seth and Ciela pursue a Dyad who has infiltrated a key research complex where they discover that the inexorable subspace peril will not just threaten a single planet. It will mean the end of interstellar travel and destroy their Commonwealth civilization.

The tech is very believable and the characters are easy to care about. There's just enough romance to keep it ineresting and lively. I've read all of the books in the Taragon Universe and have enjoyed each one. More please.

The reader is reintroduced to Khoe in this book as well as Ciela both love interests of Seth. The interactions among the 3 of them present rich and sometimes humorous situations. The romance in particular is a little tricky here but well handled and hillarious at times. The characters, as usual, are very well developed, I would ceritainly recognize them should they walk through the door. You can easily relate to and commiserate with...or despise them as the case may be. None of the characters is all good or all bad, that's what makes them so believable. The descriptions are vivid it's very easy to put yourself in the various environs and in some cases wish you weren't!The action is non stop but it's not just a shoot 'em up book there are nail biting escapes, intrigue and chases too. Good "guy stuff!"There is by the nature of the plot a lot of "science" including of course the rather slippery concept of entropy. I think Chris did an excellent job incorporating science into this space opera; its never an easy thing to do but in this case it was particularly challenging and well done.As with all of Chris books this can be read as a stand alone piece, and thoroughly enjoyed, but I think it is a richer experience if you have read some of the Sethran series first. In fact read the entire "Tatrgon Tales" franchise, I know you'll be engrossed.Chris is an up and coming writer who is quickly mastering the craft and genre. 5 stars!

Chris Reher hasn't found that line, hasn't been anywhere close to that line, and I'd say has years of writing before even finding that there is one in this series. So much richness in detail, characters, science, and plot. She always finds ways to make even the non-humans, well, human. She isn't afraid of awkward situations, she relishes them and in turn, you come to relish them as well. She's wonderful at showing rather than telling her stories. In this book Sethran is working against time to stop the dual natured beings from taking over and in turn, becoming potent tools in a rebel takeover. He is ever alive and never more "human." I did receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
