Perfect Guide for OCP Java SE 7 By Gurpreet Sachdeva Although this book is essentially for preparing for OCP certification but I feel it is a great reference for anyone interested in learning Java 7 features. Oracle has been adding tons of features with each Java release and it is no mean task to keep up with them. Author has done a great job in providing adequate treatment to all topics. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.High Points:* Each chapter has well defined mapping with exam objectives, exam tips, sidebars and Twist in Tale* Interesting illustrations which keep the reader focussed like Thread Lifecycle.* Funny way to introduce concepts like overloading, exceptions. I loved the airplane example for exceptions.* Inner details explained with decompiled code (For e.g. Enum)* Good introduction to design patterns like Singleton, Factory, DAO, etc.* Lucid explanation for Collections with interesting examples.* Novel way to explain difference between Assertions and Exceptions.* Review notes and sample exam questions at the end of each chapter.Improvement Areas:* Compiler errors can be in a different color.* I think Page 249 has a typo erro. The phrase "Won’t compile; no way to pass argument to T" should be "Won’t compile; no way to pass argument T"* More emphasis should be given to StringBuffer and StringBuilder as developers typically get confused in them.* Exception Handling - More emphasis on why we should not catch Errors. Moreover, I dont think extending RuntimeException should be encouraged.* Few examples for Java I/O.* Concurrency is not an easy area so more detailed treatment with sufficient examples should be given.* A consolidated mock paper in the end would help.I feel this book would be good reference for preparing for OCP certification.Disclaimer - Publisher gave me a copy of the eBook.

It took more of a hand-holding approach to the OCA Java SE 7 material, but the presentation was so strong and ideas were so well supported that the book didn't even really need its "make hard things easy" shtick. In fact, if it were not for the cartoons and related gimmicks, I would say it is one of the better Java books I have read. The key to the book's success is in how it provides simple but complete explanations to exam topics, and these are sometimes followed by more specific topics not on the exam in order to produce an educational answer (for example, showing how to convert between different number systems during a rudimentary lesson on how the compiler interprets numeric literals). This book doesn't have any magic of the first. It's also relying entirely on the "make hard things easy" shtick, but this is about all it has going for it and the approach sometimes works against the reader. The material on the OCP Java SE 7 exam is complex enough that there really isn't a way to make it easy, no matter how clever a person might be. As a result, many of the provided explanations are shallow and borderline incomplete. In fact, it's almost as if the author is holding back full explanations to topics because otherwise the book would start to acknowledge the natural complexity of the subject matter. Here is a sentence from "Chapter 08: Java file I/O" that serves as a good example of the book's general tone: "Reading or browsing through the Java API, particularly the Java File I/O API, can be very boring."

Key Collections interfaces, its implementations and usage are provided with useful examples for storing and retrieving the data from collections.Chapter 5 provides the basic String processing concepts and other areas like regular expressions, string processing and formatted strings.Chapter 6 provides a good detailed overview for the exceptions and its application to practical scenarios.Chapter 7 & 8 deals with the Java I/O and file packages like NIO with classes like Streams, Reader and writers which is useful in loading files, data over network.Chapter 9 deals explains one of the key concepts of JDBC integration to Databases detailed with the JDBC architecture, core JDBC classes, CRUD operations and transactions., data read into row sets.Chapter 10, 11 provides a detailed explanation of threads handled in Java and the concurrency in cases of multiple threads.Overall this book is one of the must have for any developer going for OCP and can be a reference companion for the developer.
