Nesrin, a shy Circassian beauty, is rushed into a loveless arranged marriage with a powerful landowner's son. By twenty-five, she is the mother of two beloved children, but is forced from her home by constant abuse at the hands of her cruel and callous husband. Her children, Jemil and Lebriz, are soon given away by their father to the Sultan's emissaries, to be taken to Istanbul to serve in the palace. Jemil is sent to a military household, where he's taught to forget his past in favor of a glorious future as a warrior, while beautiful Lebriz is sent to the gleaming Yildiz Palace where she's groomed as companion to the princess. Set during the final days of the Ottoman Empire, LEBRIZ tells the story of Nesrin's desperate search for her children, and of Jemil and Lebriz's tenacity to survive. Based on real events, this powerful novel pulls back the curtain on the secret and cloistered world of the Sultan's harem, and proves that the bonds between mother and child may be tested, but never broken.

Lebriz: A Girl of the Harem, by Orvilla Gregg Unel, Sinan H Unel

Review Lebriz is the lovely story of a Circassian girl and her brother buffeted by cruelty and lost to the forces of history. Told mainly through the eyes of Lebriz, who becomes a favorite in the Sultan's harem, and her mother, who never stopped looking for her, the novel lets the reader live through the Russian devastation of Circassian villages, the opulent royal harem, and the end of the Ottoman Empire. The fate of the empire is intimately tied to the fate of these women and the reader is drawn along like a silk scarf slipping through the hand. Jenny White, author of the Kamil Pasha mysteries

About the Author Originally from the Midwest, Orvilla Ünel is a graduate of the University of Michigan where she studied English and Communications. She met her future husband, Nami Ünel, the day she arrived on campus. She encountered the remarkable story of Lebriz Hanim, which had been handed down through the generations, soon after the couple moved to Turkey. Over the next fifty years, Orvilla raised two children, dabbled in various business ventures and served as social ambassador to numerous foreign and local visitors—mostly in her living room. Mrs. Ünel is the author of several children’s stories. Lebriz is her first novel.

Slayter As I sat down to read Lebriz, I hoped for a grand story that would draw me in - and this book did not disapoint! I could not, and did not put this book down, I was that drawn in by the story. Chronicling the swath of time at the front end of the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Lebriz follows one family’s experience in this at-times turbulent social landscape. Of particular interest is the book’s focus on the experience of women in Ottoman society from a first-person perspective. Overall, I was impressed by the Ünels’ fascinating narrative and use of period-specific historical and political details. Indeed, while reading Lebriz, I was reminded of Louis De Bernieres’ Birds Without Wings. A thoroughly enjoyable read!

The late Mr Waterton having, some time ago, expressed his opinion that ravens are gradually becoming extinct in England, I offered the few following words about my experience of these birds. The raven in this story is a compound of two great originals, of whom I was, at different times, the proud possessor. The first was in the bloom of his youth, when he was discovered in a modest retirement in London, by a friend of mine, and given to me. He had from the first, as Sir Hugh Evans says of Anne Page, 'good gifts', which he improved by study and attention in a most exemplary manner.

When Dan Freeman, a native Liberian, moved from his small hometown to attend school at the prestigious Cape Palmus High School in Harper City, little did he know that he would one day become entangled in an intricate web of racism, sex, infidelity, politics, deceit, voodoo, and even murder. But when his best friend, Mo, a talented and popular young musician, goes missing, Dan soon finds himself in the center of the search to find him-and to find those responsible for his disappearance. Set against the backdrop of the real-world ritualistic killings that captivated Liberians in the 1970s, Behind Devil's Rock takes readers on a journey that pits native Liberians against elite Americo-Liberians, corrupt politicians against well-intentioned locals, and progressives against traditionalists. It is a story of good against evil-and a race against time as Dan rushes to save his friend's life.

Midnight Queen is the second volume in Anne Stevens' epic Tudor Crimes saga. Stretching from the downfall of Cardinal Wolsey, through the turbulent years of the matter of King Henry's divorce, it sketches out the very real world of Tudor middle England. The story is told at breathtaking speed. Behind the great events of Tudor times, there is a dark underworld of corrupt politicians, foreign intrigeurs and dangerous men, looking to advance themselves, at any cost. The author shows you the hidden events, through the eyes of the ordinary people who serve the great powers at court. Will Draper, now married to Miriam, is called on, once more, to help destroy a plot against the influential Pole family. They are descendants of the last Plantagenet king, and someone is killing them off. Thomas Cromwell, Eustace Chapuys, King Henry VIII, Stephen Gardiner, and Sir Thomas More all play their part, and the known historical facts are woven into a tale of intrigue and murder, which may well bring down a dynasty. Anne Stevens is a welcome addition to the genre, and has a real feel foe the commoner in Tudor times. She has her characters behaving in the right manner for the age, and does not impose modern values on Tudor thinking. If you do not have wealth, then the harsh truth is there to see. We are treated to scenes in ramshakle villages, great houses, taverns, and bawdy houses, where a night's pleasure can set a man back six pennies. Equality is not a factor, and a fortune can only be won by treachery, great service, or at the point of a sharp sword. Will Draper serves Cromwell, often violently, and his sword is always ready. Murderous jugglers, traitorous lords, spoiled young men, social climbers, princesses, great ladies, and cheap whores sprinkle the action, bringing the flavour of Tudor reality to this sprawling epic of historical fiction.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Tudor England Comes Alive By J Poe Her writing is smooth and fast paced with interesting lively characters. You laugh at their antics and they grow into real persons with her vivid descriptions of their looks, attitudes, and personalities. King Henry is avidly described as a changeable but loveable person. His behavior inconsistent at times but shrewd at others. Anne is not someone you may not want to deal with being too sly and deceitful. The author builds her story into the history of these amazing times carefully through her characters. Each of her books take you into a long gone world of heavy handed kings and a corrupt church. A world full of everyday people who laugh, cry, and try to survive. If you want enjoyable books read this series.

Following Shanti's decision to leave Cayan's town, she follows rumours about a man who's a ghost. Thinking he may be her brother she eventually tracks him down in the enemy's camp. There she not only finds her brother but also an unknown man who talks in riddles and seems to be a guide. With her escape and the much talked about Hunter on her trails she finds herself once more in the path of Cayan and her honour guard, making hard decisions. Discovering Cayan's past may also help unlock his immense powers This time she's not by herself as she finds herself trusting in the people around her and sets out to the Shadowlands as danger follows close on their heels. With impressive fighting scenes and emotion running through the pages, the Hunted pulls the reader into the story and has your heart racing to see where it leads. K.F Breene delivers just as she did in her darkness series and makes you care for the people in the story and has you cheering for the good guys even while seeing the path of the enemy.I can't wait to see where this story goes and i totally recommend this. Time to let our females fight.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. What's next in this exciting in gripping series? By Holli When I finished the first book in this series, Chosen, I didn't think it could get any better.Alas, I was wrong. BOY was I wrong. I could not put Hunted down. I was reading it between calls at work, on breaks, while eating dinner, I was addicted. I could not stop reading. And then, the unthinkable happened. But we'll get to that in a minute. In Chosen we learned a lot about Shanti and what drives her, a little about Cayan. In Hunted we learn more about both of these exciting and complex characters. We also get to see a glimpse of how Shanti used to be when she is with her brother Rohnan, and we see the background characters evolving as well. With the Hunter coming after them, Xandre aka the Being Supreme still a huge threat, the action never stops. Shanti draws more allies to their cause and continues on her journey with Cayan, Sanders, Burson, her Honor Guard and Rohnan to the Shadow Lands to undertake the trials to become the Chosen. (Burson calls her the Wanderer).Hunted will have you hooked from the first and when the unthinkable happens, you will be going no, no, NO and looking for the next book in this exciting series. Hopefully K.F. Breene doesn't keep us waiting too long.

By Danielle A Cup and A Book I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.Have no doubt, Hunted is an action packed thrill ride. Chosen was amazing and gave us a great understanding of our characters, but Hunted was so meaty I will be full for days! Only days though, so the next book needs to get here in a hurry.Shanti is on her journey to fulfill her role a Chosen, and encounters many additions to her close circle; some are pieces of her old life returning to her, and others are new, interesting additions to the already amazing cast of characters. The growth of Shanti and Cayan’s understanding of not only their powers – and how they interact – but also of each other. This Ms. Breene is very sneaky in how she includes small bits of romance into this book, but make no mistake – while it is a underlying feature, Hunted is focused on the journey, not the destination.I fell in love with Shanti in Chosen; her vulnerable yet fiercely determined personality was endearing. We now get a bit more insight into her emotions and the toll they take on her. Shanti proves her self more with every decision that she is the person that does the right thing, not the easy thing. Plus, she is a bad-ass warrior – who wouldn’t root for her?Cayan is, gah! Wonderful!! He refuses to stay separated from Shanti, even after her less than stellar departure. The thing I love the most about him is that even though you can totally tell he is in love with her (though I don’t know if he know that yet), he knows that they need to be together for the greater good and that is a driving force for him.All of our favorite characters are back plus some new ones that add so much to the story – but I won’t tell you. I am not a spoiler!! I am SO excited to see how The Warrior Chronicles plays out!!!!

Five years after the Supreme Court of the United States ordered the end of public school segregation, the practice is still alive and well in Pine Grove, South Carolina. In fact, the Freedom of Choice program initiated by the school board is solely to satisfy the federal government and NAACP while keeping the status quo. This clash between federal regulations and local social standards comes to an explosive reality for elementary school principal Ron Guy when his African-American custodian Ben submits a Freedom of Choice form to transfer his step-daughter to Ron’s all-white school. Ron quickly finds himself caught in a whirlwind of passion, fear, hate, and a growing sense of violence as Ben’s wife Lilith demands that the system accommodate the request. An immovable object meets an irresistible force as Lilith refuses to allow Ben to withdraw the filed form and the all-white school board prepares to impose its will at all costs. This impasse produces a butterfly effect as backdoor dealings, sexually charged alliances, and explosive passion and betrayal threaten to tear the town apart. When everything erupts in violence and murder, Ron is left with a decision that will alter his life forever: walk away, or stay and fight for what he believes to be right. A historical novel of extraordinary resonance and uncommon grace, John Hamby’s debut novel is an unsettling look at the horrific power of prejudice. Exploring a topic as relevant today as it was fifty years ago, he delves deeply into the human psyche, exposing the fears and passions that drive our behavior and unleash torrents of devastation. As entertaining as it is provoking, Freedom of Choice is a searing portrayal of the darker aspects of human behavior.

Fascinating story By Siddew I enjoyed this book because it gave me an idea of how hard it was for schools in the south to be integrated - the good old boys conspiring to delay or prevent a young black girl from attending a white school. It was a fast read, with mystery, violence, and sex woven into the racial and religious bigotry of the day. A good read for lovers of mystery, action, and history.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thoroughly Enjoyable! By ssgaddy Albeit non fiction, what a great insight into the many segregation struggles of the 60's. As a resident of South Carolina, I felt connected to the locations and the characters. Freedom of Choice is an easy to read, thought provoking story line. Nicely done, John!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Sorry, not believable By Alan B. Manifold I found this book disappointing. While I liked the setting and the portrayal of the difficulty involved in integrating schools, it seemed to me otherwise over the top and not believable. While each of the things that happened in the book seem possible by themselves, having them all together stretched my belief response too far.The following contains significant spoilers; please be advised. For generally moral characters to repeatedly cross the lines of morality so far seems unlikely to me. A mother, concerned about the welfare of her only child, would have to be desperate even to consider committing cold-blooded murder and her circumstances in the book do not seem nearly desperate enough to me for her to go so far with an entirely innocent victim. Even the ex-convict would hesitate to murder a deputy sheriff in cold blood just to make another attempted murder easier. A preacher, even one as crazy as Vennington, seems unlikely to order and pay for the murder of a basically innocent white school principal just to help his daughter move to town. These are just a few of the things that made me shake my head and discount the reality of this story. I wish I could have liked it better, but it was just too much to swallow. On the other hand, the writing is better than that found in most free Kindle books. While there are a few too many cliches, it is mostly quite well-written. I think a different story that focused more on the conflict inherent in the freedom of choice system and how it affected the communities would be much more palatable than one that spends page after page on the details of kinky sex and perversion, not to mention the inexplicable flip-flops of characters from strong moral stances to thoroughly despicable behaviour. Sorry, I don't buy it.

He wakes in a cemetery in front of a white marble gravestone that marks his resting place for the past three centuries. Although the letters are faded, he adopts the name Pilatus from the weathered stone façade. He realizes he is dead-alive and embraces the newfound power his undead existence allows. The consumption of blood increases his strength, and so, he is the first of his kind: vampire.

He soon begins to question: Who was I before I awakened to become this creature? Who made me and why? So begins a two thousand year journey in Pilatus's search for truth, fueled by horrific recurring nightmares. He travels far and wide in search of answers, making the acquaintance of both Bram Stoker and Charles Dickens. He even makes an enemy of the Roman Catholic Church, who pursues him relentlessly.

Pilatus eventually meets Phaedra, who becomes the partner he seeks. Although he feels love is out of the question, he allows her to guide him through his search for identity from Constantinople to Europe and all the way to New York City. The question remains: why did Pilatus awaken from his centuries-long sleep? And who is the deviant mind that would create an immortal monster who feeds on blood to survive?

"Gray has a real gem starting with his subject and carries it through with an excellent delivery" -Tom Clementson, Kindle Book Review- Before King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, Britain was just a Shadowland. It’s Midwinter’s Eve, and a storyteller weaves a fantastic tale from his youth... “I have lived more years than I can remember, probably more than the sum of all your years combined. Kings have called me friend and brigands have sworn to burn the flesh from my bones, even if they have to search all seven halls of the Shadowland to find me.” Be transported back to the Dark Ages; to a time when Britain lay in shadows, deserted by its Roman masters. When the Saxons invade at the invitation of Vortigern—traitorous leader of the Britons—the tribes must unite in order to reclaim the land they see as their birthright. And one among them must rise and be crowned as their rightful King. An Amazon Bestseller in Arthurian Fantasy, Shadowland breathes new life into the legends we have all come to know.

The world described is evocative, atmospheric and really nails the sense of uncertainty as the folk, left behind by Rome's withdrawal from the British Isles at the beginning of the Dark Ages, try to protect themselves and rebuild their culture. There's also a strong sense of mystery, magic and adventure as the plight of the main characters unfolds while they move through the landscape toward their destiny. (Can't say anymore without spoiling!) As you get to know the characters' strengths, weaknesses, hopes and fears I really found myself relating to them and visualizing who they were. There are some unforeseen and unexpected twists too which move the story forward nicely and some exciting battle/ skirmish scenes. I really was hooked from the beginning. Having read quite a few published novels in the same vein I would rate this for sure. Highly entertaining!

86 of 98 people found the following review helpful. Different Slant By Lucy Ditty My feelings on this book were very similar to Ignite's. I've read a lot of Arthurian stories, and this was, at least, different. I confess that I had actually forgotten what the book was supposed to be about by the time I started reading, which helped quite a bit.I enjoyed the "current time" scenes quite a bit more than the "flashbacks," actually. They seemed fresher, more vivid somehow. All in all, I just wasn't engaged with a lot of the story. I'm not a big fan of battle scenes and my impression, now a few days after finishing the book, was that there were a lot of them that I just kind of flipped through. Once everybody started moving in the same direction, it just kind of lost the spark, for me.There were also errors noted:arms "flaying" for a hold on empty air"franticly""Warrior's wearing" rough kiltsin a "warriors knot"hast "heeling hands""as he past""may once of possessed"At one point, Cal says "he doesn't remember comfy." This yanked me right out of the setting. Intellectually, I know that the language was very different. I realize people in this time frame may not have even used the word "comfortable." (At least one dictionary points to the mid-14th century.) However, a relatively modern slang word like "comfy" is just beyond the pale. There is one section where "thee" and "thou" run amok. "Thee have arrived!" No. For one person, "thou hast." For multiple people, "you have." Thee and thou are generally singular. To give the author credit, I can't be positive that it wasn't deliberate, considering the source. However, speaking for myself, it was, again, jarring and took me out of the story. It was an okay diversion. There are a lot of books that I just delete without writing a review. I enjoyed this one enough to take the time to write a review, and I hope the author's not too disappointed by it. I would read more by this author, but I would suggest some additional proofreading and editing assistance.

By Amazon Customer A fine rendition of the adventures preceding King Arthur and the round table. The author brings Uther, Merlyn, and the Lady of the Lake to life in this engrossing tale. The characters are real and believable. The action flows quickly as the author stories the lives of our young heroes from young teenagers to heroes of Britain. If you like the Arthurian Legend genre, you'll enjoy this book.

Read Ebook Weapons of Mass Deception: A Novel of Modern-Day Nuclear Terrorism (The WMD Files Book 1), by David Bruns, J.R. Olson

Patriot Games meets The Fourth Protocol in this riveting story of modern-day nuclear terrorism.

In 2003, the world watched as coalition forces toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, then searched—unsuccessfully—for the weapons of mass destruction they were certain existed.

None were ever found, but they do exist. On the eve of the invasion, a handful of nuclear weapons was smuggled out of Iraq and hidden in the most unlikely of places—Iran. Now, as the threat of WMDs fades into a late-night punch line, a shadowy Iranian faction waits for the perfect moment to unleash Saddam Hussein’s nuclear legacy on the West.

Brendan McHugh, a Navy SEAL, meets a mysterious Iranian diplomat on a raid in Iraq. His former girlfriend and FBI linguist discovers a link to Iran among a group of captured jihadis. And pulling it all together is a CIA analyst who can’t forget about Saddam Hussein’s WMDs—even if it costs him his career.

An Interview with the Co-Authors:

Q: What makes WMD different from other thrillers?

WEAPONS OF MASS DECEPTION is co-written by two US Navy veterans, one a submarine officer and the other a career naval intel officer. This an alternate history thriller that answers the greatest mystery of our generation: what happened to Saddam Hussein’s WMDs?

We write about the threats of our time. When we were growing up, the threat was the Soviet Union, now it’s non-state actors, sleeper cell terrorists, and nuclear proliferation. Our characters, a Navy SEAL, a CIA analyst, and an FBI agent, go up against Iranian hardliners, Hezbollah operatives, and sleeper cells that have infiltrated our borders. If you're a fan of Jack Ryan, Mitch Rapp, or John Milton, WMD will be right up your alley.

WEAPONS OF MASS DECEPTION takes you all over the world: from the desert of Iraq to the seat of power in Tehran, from the ranches of Argentina to the American heartland in Minneapolis.

Q: What order do I read the WMD series in?

In addition to WMD, there’s a companion story called DEATH OF A PAWN about a terrorist in a South American sleeper cell that is called on to do the bidding of his Iranian masters. You can get a free copy at davidbruns.com.

The next book in the WMD Files comes out in May 2016.

Very Tom Clancyesque in its approach as a political-military thriller, the narrative drives forward as the authors carefully build the narrative tension to a perfect climax. And though some of that tension owes to the basic plot device of the very real threat of Iranian radicals detonating a nuclear weapon (and, perhaps, starting World War III), the real cause is something cleverly concealed right out in the open: excellent character development. Whether we’re getting to know the “good guys” and their human foibles or the “bad guys” and their internal motivations, the authors do a great job making us care that it’s the everyday people we’re reading about, not the extraordinary events, that really matter.Bruns and Olson bring their armed services experiences to the table, and doing so lends a depth and breadth of credibility to this alternative-history tale. Never once did I feel like I was reading a Handbook of Navy Life or Cliff’s Notes on Being a CIA Operative. On the contrary, their deft handling of the everyday experiences—both personal and professional—of intelligence operatives and military personnel was so well done, I actually found myself relating to their characters *more* while learning about covert operations around the world. In short, I felt closer to these characters than I’ve ever felt to James Bond.A real strength of WMD is its narrative approach—alternating between the protagonists in one chapter to the antagonists in another, the novel plays to the reader’s intelligence (rather than insults it) by giving balanced perspectives on the events as they unfold. The authors never reduce their characters into “white hat” and “black hat” caricatures. Rather, they present fully fleshed-out, three-dimensional human beings on both sides.Fast-paced, well-researched, with characters you not only relate to but care about, Weapons of Mass Deception is a superb military thriller.

Intense political thriller that offers a fascinating insight to a modern day mystery By Amazon Customer There were scenes of action in Weapons of Mass Deception when I just knew that the two authors must have had so much fun plotting out this book. Their real-life military experience shines through, adding even more credibility to a political thriller that sometimes tracks so closely to recent events I began to wonder if the authors possessed a crystal ball at the time of writing. The level of research gave me a greater appreciation of the complexities of life and politics in the Middle East than I had before. The story captures snapshots of the lives of six flawed and interesting characters covering a wide spectrum of professional and personal developments across several years, the steady pace enlivened with intense scenes of military action and personal drama. Every now and again the lives of these six characters cross over, enough for the reader to understand the significance, sometimes ahead of the characters creating an air of looming suspense. Always in the background is the menacing threat that the world is about to discover the whereabouts of some famous missing nuclear weapons.I loved how the three baddies in this story were given equal billing with WMD’s heroes. The back stories of Hashem Aboud, Rafiq Roshed, and U.S. Navy officer Brendan McHugh are particularly well drawn. For me, Brendan was the main hero, oh so hopeless with his personal relationships, but I found myself as much immersed in Rafiq’s personal story as I was rooting for Brendan and FBI Special Agent Liz Soroush to get their act together.Beautifully written, convincingly detailed, and professionally edited, WMD weaves global politics and fundamentalism with love and hard-hitting action, all against a backdrop of real-world events. A well thought out thriller, but also a fascinating and scary exploration of what might have been!Highly recommended!(I received an advance review copy in exchange for my honest opinion.)

By Charly The level of detail and background work the authors have done regarding a country - Finland - that ultimately is not the central setting of the book is deeply impressive (yes, I live in Finland). As a reader (of advance copy) this level of attention to getting the smallest of details correct contribute to making the story feel both 'right' and 'real'. Whether you like to read thrillers, military action yarns or alternate history, this book will grab you from the get go. If you've ever wanted to get a fictional but perfectly realistic glimpse into how diplomacy, military and intelligence threads are woven into the tapestry we call foreign policy - pick this up for yourself or a friend!I'm already looking forward to hearing if/when the next in what must become a series comes out - it would be a shame to let this level of character development, intrigue and relationship (dys) function be unused to entertain readers for years to come. Please write it quickly! There's got to be a rogue nuke or two that got waylaid when Ukraine gave them up during the early 1990s....

When Abraham Petrovich leaves his native Russia to join the 1741 Bering Expedition of Discovery to explore what is now Alaska, he can only think of finding his fortune in a strange new land.

That vision comes to an abrupt halt, however, when he and a shipmate are captured by Tlingit natives near present-day Sitka after a horrifying bear attack.

Abraham's ability to adapt to an alien culture is tested, and with the help of the village chief and guidance from his wife, he fits into what he discovers is a complicated society.

The shaman wants to kill the whitefaces, but the chief wants to learn from the strangers. When the shaman conspires to get his way, Abraham and his surviving family flee Sitka fearing for their lives.

Finding refuge in Klawak, Abraham immerses himself in Tlingit life-not knowing that he'll soon make an eerie discovery on a deserted beach that will solidify his place among the Tlingits.

Abraham continues his incredible journey, seeking whitefaces like himself, but he ultimately finds something much more valuable as he explores the land and meets new people in Totem.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating and very readable By JoAnn Pippin This book is a wonderful story for readers who are interested in how early explorers of the North American continent interact with natives. It proves it is really plausible that some who came here learned and appreciated the lifestyle and culture of those who already lived here. Reading about the reactions of a “civilized” man who, in both life-threatening and humorous situations is thrown into a culture that is completely different from the court of the czars is interesting and compelling. Worked into the story is an amazing amount of detail about how the Tlingit and Haida people existed—how they fished, made their canoes and totem poles, celebrated with potlucks, and managed the rough waters and tough environmental conditions in their world It is enhanced even more with beautiful descriptive passages from an author who has intimate knowledge of Alaska geography and scenery.

Purtzer I've fished a big part of the Alaskan Panhandle from Cape Chacon,Cape Muzon,Craig,Klawak,Noyes Island,Coronation Island,Sitka,Pelican,Elfin Cove,Icy Straight & Cape Spencer. During this time I've observed many native artifacts about the Tlingit & Haidas. The book "Totem" explains many facts about the tribes and their history. The Ebb & Flood of the tides reveals unknown truths about explorers from Russia living among and marrying the local natives. How they were taught to make metal from "Black Sand" producing metal knives, weapons & tools to benefit the natives. How their Moons display the time to fish for salmon, pick berries, hunt young animals etc. All this and more information is found in the book Totem

The cruise ships should have it on board.Totem is the fast pace of survival of a man, with exceptional talents and vision, in an exceptional setting on the rough and treacherous waters off the Alaska coast. On land he learns the ways of native Indian life and lore, learns to love this beautifully breathtaking land and the meaning of contentment. All the characters are compelling in their roles that involve lust, murder, trust, friendship and love.I predict a great movie here!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Kingdom Operations - In the Marketplace By Adelle mcKinney Pastors,This is a book that you need to add to your library. It is cutting edge. It is the key to God's advancement of His kingdom. For years we have thought that real ministry took place within the four walls of the church, educating, equipping and empowering. This is actually leadership training. But the forgotten principle of the church is "evangelism." Evangelism happens everyday not in the four walls of the church but in the marketplace. Not by pastors but by employers, employees, businessowners and others who spend 40-80 a week outside of the church and inside the marketplace. Dr. Mila Mercader's new book gives the keys to empowering the saints to "do the work of the ministry," in the gates of the city!

Review Gripping, intriguing, romantic Tracy Bloom A glorious, rich, epic story of love, friendship and sacrifice which will sweep you up and transport you to another time. I absolutely loved this and can't wait for the next book in the series. Rachael Lucas, author of Sealed With A Kiss and Coming Up Roses The story reaches a heart-rending climax. A must read. I loved it Freda Lightfoot, author of The Amber Keeper With lovely writing and a terrific sense of narrative drive, Joanna Courtney portrays an era of change through a story about a long forgotten Queen. In The Chosen Queen, Edyth is a heroine who inhabits a convincingly re-created historical world, peopled with personalities whose lives leap from the page. Superb! Carol McGrath, author of The Daughters of Hastings trilogy 'A beautifully written multi layered tale with a tremendously authentic sense of place and time ... an epic feel ... highly recommended' LizLovesBooks 'An absorbing and emotional debut novel' Candis magazine A fascinating and gripping read, I was hooked from the very first page and didn't want to put it down. Joanna Courtney is a new talent in the world of historical fiction and one that I would highly recommend. I look forward to reading more by this fantastic author Bookbabblers

About the Author Joanna Courtney has wanted to be a writer ever since she could read. As a child she was rarely to be seen without her head in a book and she was also quick to pick up a pen. After spending endless hours entertaining her siblings with made up stories, it was no surprise when Joanna pursued her passion for books during her time at Cambridge University - where she combined her love of English and History by specialising in Medieval Literature. Joanna continued to write through her first years of work and then, married and living in Derbyshire, in the sparse hours available between raising four children. She has written over 200 stories and serials published in women's magazines, some of which have been broadcast on BBC radio. Joanna has also won several fiction prizes and written and directed an award-winning play. She teaches creative writing across the country and for the Open University. Joanna is fascinated by defining moments in history, of which the Battle of Hastings is certainly one. The outcome of that momentous day is one of the big 'what-ifs?' of England's past and she has loved being able to immerse herself in the world of the Anglo-Saxons, Normans and Vikings whilst writing The Queen's of the Conquest trilogy.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. an enthralling tale of war and love in Anglo-Saxon England as told through the eyes of a little known about woman By Sarah L. Gruwell I remember reading about Edyth as a kid in Morgan Llewelyn’s Wing From Hastings. I was really young and so only remember vague impressions, like remembering that Harold was a big bully and her brothers were toads. It was a real treat to re-visit this era and these people specifically to get another look at them. For a debut novel, this author has done a fantastic job. She took a lot of time in her world building and research of details. The reader gets a real sense for the sights, sounds, and smells of late Anglo-Saxon England and wild Wales. The intense political situation the characters found themselves in was thoroughly explored and made for suspenseful reading. I also was very fascinated by all the details on hand fasting vs traditional Roman religious weddings and the differences thereof. All the characters and their various relationships made for enthralling reading. To see Edyth, Harold, and all the others come alive again was a real treat. The author gives them real depth of emotion, personality, and understanding. I especially liked Edyth and her understanding of the various political situations and her place in them. Being married to two men who are enemies and the particular situation with Harold/Svana showed her maturity and clear thinking. I also liked how real she felt in her sensual nature and curiosity, like any other girl/woman her age.Altogether, I feel that this is a robust start of Joanna Courtney’s new trilogy and total career. She tells a great story, gets the historical details right, and makes her characters and their relationships breathe with depth and realism. I definitely look forward to more works by her; I feel she’s going to be among the greats for me.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating period of history By Karen McMillan This is well-written historical fiction that takes place in Wales and England from 1055 to 1066. It is a period of history I knew little about before reading this book. The story centres around the spirited Edyth, who is the granddaughter of Lady Godiva. She is only fourteen years old when her family is exiled to Wales – and there she captures the eye of the larger than life King of Wales. He eventually makes her his wife and Queen, but their marriage comes at great cost. She finds herself on the opposing side of a bitter feud with the Earl Harold Godwinson and his handfasted wife, Lady Svana, a woman with whom she is friendly, with terrible consequences for them all.The author does an admirable job creating a believable and attractive character from the facts of history about Edyth. The Chosen Queen is the first in a new historical fiction series that brings to life the Saxon, Viking and Norman queens. The author has obviously done a lot of research, and it is a fascinating read into another time. I’ll look forward to the next installment.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great story with a fierce heroine By Suze Lavender It's 1055 and fourteen year old Edyth is already quite mature for her age. She's curious about love and Harold and Svana are her great examples. She's impressed by their relationship and their faith that love will survive everything. They aren't officially married, but they have something much more special. Edyth wants to have a similar experience, she'd like to get married for love and not because of connections. There's a lot of political unrest in England and Edyth's father is exiled. He travels to Wales together with his family. There Edyth meets Griffin, the king of Wales. Even though he's much older Edyth feels they have a connection. The king asks her to marry him which will make Edyth the queen of Wales. Griffin lives with the expectation that every day could be his last, because of that he enjoys whatever he can as much as possible. His dream is to unite Wales, but that's a difficult task. After much political unrest Edyth has to go back to England. The only good thing about that is that she can be with her best friend Svana once more. She finds herself in the middle of a difficult matter. King Edward is old and there is no heir, who will become the next king? There's a tough decision Edyth has to make. One that has consequences for the future of the kingdom. The Chosen Queen overwhelmed me when I first started reading it. There were a lot of characters and the fourteen year old Edyth was much more advanced than a girl her age often is. That is part of her character though. She fights for what she believes in and love is the most important thing there is for this strong, fierce and determined woman. I greatly admired Edyth and enjoyed reading her story very much. When Edyth grows older the story becomes more mature as well. Edyth's life isn't easy. Even though this isn't an actual retelling of her history I thought it was great to read a story about this woman. She's certainly interesting and the author has done a wonderful job creating such a gripping and thrilling story. The battles had me on the edge of my seat every time. I loved the story and the development of Edyth's character. The beginning of the book might be a bit chaotic, but the rest of the story is absolutely fantastic and I didn't want it to end.
