By Lyryal Adelaide "Calamity" Sinclair is beginning to hate airships... or, maybe, she just hates airships in which she is flying North, well past the Sworn Territories, while being shot at by Vikings who just happen to be firing Breguet cannons... as she and her companions (Lucas Steele and Agent Grace Abarre) head for Mount Hadrata - over land and sea, by Airship and Steamhorse, and occasionally on foot - to dismantle the mysteries at the heart of the Crimson Gear.In the process they encounter giant eagles, Æther Quartz (the discovery of which brings myth into potentially terrifying reality), and a madman bent on the destruction of everything they hold dear.The Gears & Gunfighters series is strongly reminiscent of Beadle's serialized "Dime Novels" in the fast paced action of the series, and interestingly sympathetic main characters, leaving me waiting with anticipation for each installment.And, checking an inflation calculator, the Kindle versions of this series are comparably priced - except with more pages, and better covers. (Wow, something that's a better value for your money than way back when, she says as she reaches for the button to click for the next purchase, and begin reading the next series....)

A phenomenal adventure with charming characters come to an end in a way, although an epilogue promises a continuation of sorts into the special world Mercier has created for us. Equally strong in plot (which culminates into spectacular climax) and character development (the most emotional of the series), we are fighting to read the pages backwards, unwilling to reach the last one.

Good guys Can die, bad guys Can triumph. Dark yet hopeful, this is also a fast action thriller that keeps the reader turning the pages. Oh, and Steampunk to provide a wonderful visual background.
