To be, or not to be? That is the question...presented in a legal memo that will change the life of young William Shakespeare. The greatest writer in the history of the English language is recast as a struggling young barrister in this inventive and poignant comedy. Shakespeare and his moody law partner, Charles Ap Ulet, gamble their failing law practice on a single client, Prince Hamlet of Denmark, and his claim of "wrongful death" against his uncle, King Claudius. Shakespeare has no experience, no evidence, and no idea where the courthouse is. But with luck, he might change the course of legal history.

I reading it on the train to the airport and didn't put it down until I arrived at my doorstep. Just a great, fun read but also oddly poignant at parts. The book is ultimately a bit of a farce, but there are some deeply human elements and interactions that Coulson captures perfectly and so subtly that you don't necessarily recognize their depth until a few pages later. They're a nice element in a novel that is otherwise comedy. All and all, highly recommend (especially for a summer read).

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Well up to what is now the expected standard By Adjuster1 Some of the new authors publishing on Amazon would or should be on the New York best seller lists. This one would be at the top. Fast moving and thank goodness, without the rehash of the first 2 books of the series as some authors insist (stupidly) in inserting. Any sane individual buying book 3 of a series, would first read 1 and 2. Why most authors don't understand that, or allow themselves to be persuaded by the publisher's sales people is pathetic. As for the book itself, I could hardly put it down. Well thought out, fast moving, inventive, etc., etc., please everyone, buy and enjoy!

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Best So Far By lawboss Part 3 picks up where the storyline left off and is seamless. While the offering can be viewed as a stand alone story, reading the first 2 parts might make the experience more enjoyable. The author certainly doesn't disappoint with this book. The editing (which he made a conscious effort to improve) is solid. Without wanting to give away any of the plot, the offering has plenty of new tech, the usual detail as to strategy and tactics, non-stop action and several twist that take the reader for a journey down the rabbit hole.If you enjoy hard science fiction, military action, interesting tech and good character development, I recommend the read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. AI concepts By George Newkirk Interesting AI concepts especially in regard to sentience. The idea of self awareness in a computer has been proposed many times. Azimov as an example. However, the proposal that a union can take place between two AI entities is definitely a step forward in SF.

This is Subtopia. A place between worlds. UTOPIA is the end goal. But between here and there, the distance we have to travel, there is Subtopia, a time and place just beneath our highest potential. This isn’t the worst possible world, nor is it the best. DYSTOPIA is what we are fighting against. Through storytelling, futurist predictions, challenging proposals, and classic paranoia, we envision the worst of all possible worlds so we might know how to prevent it. The stories in this collection take on the best and the worst of us, and the territory in between.

Greetings and happiness to Cesar Nostradamus my son. Your late arrival, Cesar Nostredame, my son, has made me spend much time in constant nightly reflection so that I could communicate with you by letter and leave you this reminder, after my death, for the benefit of all men, of which the divine spirit has vouchsafed me to know by means of astronomy. And since it was the Almighty's will that you were not born here in this region and I do not want to talk of years to come but of the months during which you will struggle to grasp and understand the work I shall be compelled to leave you after my death: assuming that it will not be possible for me to leave you such writing as may be destroyed through the injustice of the age. The key to the hidden prediction which you will inherit will be locked inside my heart.

For hundreds of years, the Culpepper family backed the monarchy, but when King Charles disbanded Parliament, married a Catholic princess, and appointed an archbishop who was a Catholic supporter, the royalist Culpeppers found themselves at odds with their friends and neighbors. .  Years earlier, against his family's wishes, John had purchased a merchant ship, sailed to Virginia, and spent most of his time there. While on American soil, he received word of the uprisings that followed the king's actions. .When civil war began, John feared for the safety of his family in England. He was horrified when the king was captured, convicted of high treason, and beheaded. Would John's family be next? The only way to rescue them would be with his ship, under the cloak of darkness. Would he succeed, or would they all be caught and tried as traitors? .John Culpepper the Merchant is the second book in the Culpepper saga and is the story of the progenitor of the modern-day American Culpeppers. He was the author's tenth great-grandfather.

Excerpt from Education as a ScienceIn the present work I have surveyed the Teaching Art, as far as possible, from a scientific point of view; which means, among other things, that the maxims of ordinary experience are tested and amended by bringing them under the best ascertained laws of the mind.I have devoted one long chapter to an account of the Intellect and the Emotions in their bearings on education. The remainder of the work is occupied with the several topics more specially connected with the subject. There are certain terms and phrases that play a leading part in the various discussions; and to each of these I have endeavoured at the outset to assign a precise meaning. They are - Memory, Judgment, Imagination, proceeding from the Known to the Unknown, Analysis and Synthesis, Object Lesson, Information and Training, doing One Thing Well.A separate consideration is also bestowed on Education Values, or an enquiry into the worth of the various subjects included in the usual routine of instruction; the largest amount of space being given to Science.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This is a long, thorough book dealing with his theories of education. He was perhaps too much a man of his times to avoid insisting upon reading the ancient authors in the original Latin and Greek. One must in any case stand in awe of him.

Best PDF Ebook The Undying: Shades: An Apocalyptic Thriller (The Undying Series), by Ethan Reid

The Undying “screams for a sequel” (Publishers Weekly)—and Ethan Reid delivers, in this riveting follow-up to “a thriller that brings a genuinely fresh take to a monstrous mythology” (Andrew Pyper, #1 bestselling author of The Demonologist).THE FATE OF THE WORLD IS IN HIS HANDS. The Undying: SHADES finds American student Jeanie and her young charge, Ren, fifteen years after the EMP that wiped out Paris and sent them on the run from the undying. Walking the highways and hiding out in abandoned buildings across France, they eventually find their way to Spain and the walled city of Ronda where a few dozen survivors have gathered—safe enough from the hunting undying, but facing a new threat on the scorched planet: starvation. With their main resource—humans—bordering on extinction, the undying have weakened, retreating to their hives and slowly withering away. But not for long. A dark presence arrives, casting its shadow across Spain, reawakening the hives and creating a new breed of monster. Driven by some alien intelligence, these Shades not only reanimate the undying, but can possess the living, turning survivors against one another. When Ronda comes under attack, Ren saves the day. As the youngest human left on earth, he has been blessed with a special gift that makes him a perfect killing machine—and the last hope of humanity. Forced to leave the safety of the barricades, he takes to the highways with a company of Spaniards who intend to eradicate the undying from Europe, hive by hive, using Ren as their secret weapon. But as they approach Sevilla to face the most powerful Shade yet, Ren learns some in his company aren’t all they appear to be… **The publisher has provided this ebook to you without Digital Rights Management software (DRM) applied so that you can enjoy reading it on your personal devices.**

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Unique monsters, powers and setting for a notable post-apocalyptic thriller By Tim Ward The Undying: Shades is a strong improvement from book one in an already good option for fans of post apocalyptic horror. The character focus engaged more and strengths in the first book showed maturity and fine tuning. The series still lacks a little in so far as it isn't among the best post-apocalyptic horror I've read, but Ethan Reid's trajectory of improvement from book one to two could put him in that company, if not in the final book of the Undying trilogy, then in books soon after. He did a great job with this series giving us a new setting and enough of a twist on the monster and "magic" to make this series stand out from the crowd. For those who have read the first book, The Undying, (hint, don't read on if you haven't), I really liked the change in focus from POV to Reny. His gift is the most interesting aspect to this world, and we get to see how that affects him and how he uses it as the underdog, youngest person alive. The "mother" is still involved, and has moments that I enjoyed, but overall, this story is mostly about Reny, and that's a good thing. The gang that he goes out with for most of the story is also more interesting than the gang book one focused on. This made the deaths more impactful and created more of a thrill in the face of danger. I was truly surprised with how each person's life or death turned out, and really was surprised through to the end.The audiobook narrator, Candace Thaxton, is the same as the first book, and that's great news. She does a stellar job with the French and is flawless everywhere else. She isn't among my top five, but she's good.Overall, while the first book was good, but left me at times wondering if I'd stick with this series, this book has solidified my interest in Ethan Reid as a story teller. I'm not sure this series has enough character interest for me to make the next book a jump to the top of my queue purchase, but I like what I've seen from Reid and would recommend him as an author to look out for.A review copy was provided by the publisher for an honest review.

The sense of place is rich: the vaulting sewers of Paris, the mountain architecture of Ronda, the brooding nostalgia for what Spain was and the illustration of what has become of it. While Reid has developed the Undying, projecting how their condition might change as time goes on, of greater interest to me is how well he has made these books about the living. Relationships get compressed under stress and the possibility that death or worse may truly come at any time, childhood is cut short by the realities of survival in an apocalyptic world and people need to adapt fast if they are going to survive. Fans of sci-fi will appreciate the thought that Reid has put into considering the plausible future here- how do people communicate? What happens to the atmosphere? What adaptations to people make with dwindling food and medicine supplies?I experienced this read through the audiobook version- the reader did a great job conveying the characters, their accents, different languages and emotions. The pace of both books is enjoyable, with interesting character arcs, techniques of foreshadowing and the means to leave the reader with just enough sense of what might lay ahead at the end of each book so as to have them craving for the next turn of the page.

Its a whole new cast of characters and they are so entertaining, Xavi is hilarious. I really enjoyed the humor from the characters which was obviously masking and alleviating the fear but it helped to keep the story going. After a pause in the hellscape from the first book it doesnt take long for mistakes to open up the flood gates. People are shredded, impaled, blown up and boring things like being shot and stabbed but it is so fun. This is a really enjoyable read that had action, youthful love, cowardice, bravery all mixed up in a horrendous world with vicious monsters playing with your mind on a new grand level. What's not to like. You'll blow through this book. Enjoyed it more than the first which is saying something.

Basketball’s most unlikely—and most sought-after—training guru offers an inside look at his career, his methods, and the all-star players whose games he’s helped transform. Where do the best basketball players in the world turn when they want to improve their game? Whom does a future NBA Hall of Famer thank at his press conference when he’s named Rookie of the Year? Who is it that Sports Illustrated, The Wall Street Journal, and Men’s Journal all call the "Hoops Whisperer" because of his ability to engage, inspire, and challenge the players he trains? The answer to all of these questions is Idan Ravin.Ravin never played or coached in college or the pros, yet a virtual NBA All-Star team relies on him to better their game and reach their full potential. A soft-spoken former lawyer, Ravin has become professional basketball’s hottest trainer. In The Hoops Whisperer, Ravin shares the fascinating story of how he transformed a passion for the game into working with iconic basketball stars such as Chris Paul, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Stephen Curry, Blake Griffin, James Harden, Dwight Howard, and many more.  He offers a rare unguarded glimpse inside the lives of these great athletes, drawn from his intimate connection with them that is the basis of his success. Showcasing his unorthodox drills and improvisational techniques in action, Ravin reveals how faith, effort, dedication, and passion can make a player into a superstar—and anyone into a success. Combined with his own inspiring journey, Ravin’s insights make The Hoops Whisperer a must-read for anyone who loves the game.

The Hoops Whisperer: On the Court and Inside the Heads of Basketball's Best Players, by Idan Ravin

Review "I never imagined that when I first worked with Idan before my rookie year, our relationship would extend more than a decade. He has influenced me tremendously and I am very grateful for his loyalty, friendship, and guidance. He is passionate about everything he does and, while some may consider his methods unorthodox, the end results for me have been remarkable." --Carmelo Anthony, New York Knicks "Idan inspired me to see my full potential, to become more than others had ever expected of me, and challenge myself to do more than I had even expected of myself. He showed me the importance of resilience and determination; and to capitalize on all my opportunities I had coming out of school and even to this day. His challenge to never become 'regular' stuck with me and kept me fierce in my determination to be committed to who I am, what I stand for, and to leave my lasting fingerprints on the game I so dearly love." --Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors "Idan believed in me when others didn't. He challenged me when others couldn't. He cheered for me when others stopped. He praised me when others wouldn't. He stood by me when others ran. He encouraged me to find my greatness, which I did and continue to find." --JR Smith, New York Knicks "Idan is the first guy that I've worked with that brought something different to the workouts, who pushed me past my limits, who made me think of the game on a different level. He pushed me with his words, encouraged me and built my confidence as the days went on. Truly one of a kind and I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to learn from him." --Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder "Idan was the best trainer I've ever worked with. The drills that we did pushed me to and past the limit. Working with Idan allowed me to fall in love with the game of basketball all over again. If you want to be great, go see Idan and it will change your life." --Dwight Howard, Houston Rockets

A blueprint for making your vision a reality By Bayonik Man Overall this book is a great page turning story about faith, devotion, vision, and inspiration. It also includes many fascinating stories of how Idan utilizes his thoughtfulness, skill, and intelligence to create precision training sessions for some of the NBA's greatest players. This book is a reminder that peak performance is only found through true passion, love, and a burning desire to master your craft. While his and his player's craft is basketball, this book is a must read for anyone who wants to be great and provide higher value, lasting impact, and be legendary in any endeavor!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Will inspire you to dream again! By daniel shaw If you are a basketball junkie, this book will definitely captivate your attention from cover to cover. More importantly, it transcends the game of basketball by giving a first hand account of an individual who kept pursuing his dreams despite of not having the "pedigree" or inside track to the industry that he now flourishes in. This is a book that will motivate you to pursue your passions and dream big again. Ravin's attention to detail when it comes to the players he works with, will help any coach, parent, teacher, businessman connect with the people they interact with on a daily basis. The accounts of Kobe, CP3, Melo,KD, Steph, and many others also give you an inside look to the dedication and sacrifice that these alpha males pay to make it and stay in the NBA. Thank you for shaking the game up, Idan. Get this book.

A rogue satellite disappears off NSA's space radar and falls into Monterey Bay on the California coastline. The Agency's efforts to find the lost satellite are thwarted by a young oceanographer, Matt Cross, who, with his wife, Lindy, a local television reporter, watch the fiery landing from their honeymoon beach picnic and track it to its final resting place, five-hundred feet down in the Monterey Submarine Canyon. Bent on fame and fortune, they retrieve the satellite, examine it, and find an unfathomable object, a satellite sent back in time from our future. Revealing its contents to the American public in a history-making television report, they turn our world upside down and leave it with a life-or-death decision: assassinate a few innocent people or destroy the future of humanity. This fast-paced techno thriller leaves you breathless as you race through its pages, searching for the answer. Based on the Grandfather Paradox, it is not a fantasy but a realistic depiction of an event that could happen tomorrow. Fasten your seat belts and ready yourselves for the trip of a lifetime.

SATELLITE LOST, by JOHN PAUL CATER

From the Author I recently wrote this novel using my memorable two-year residence in Moss Landing several years ago as a backdrop.  A hidden gem on the Monterey Bay coastline, it is a fishing and whale-watching village where time stands still, and seemingly has for decades.  Just a mile out from the Moss Landing harbor is the Monterey Submarine Canyon, a gaping chasm in the ocean floor deeper and larger that the Grand Canyon.  The stark visions of those scenarios in my memories brought out Satellite Lost, a speculative fiction tale of a serendipitous finding that all at once, brings overwhelming elation and uncontrollable fears into the discoverers' lives.  The moral: be careful what you wish for.

The story line is very believable, and has romance, government agents, intrigue, and secrecy. It may take some time to wrap your mind around the various theories presented during the story, but I found it well worth reading (I will probably read it again soon).

Just finished reading the pages of this suspense-filled thought-provoking masterpiece from my favourite writer when it comes to sci-fi. Done like none other than him. Quality same as his work PI DAY DOOMSDAYJohn P. Cater, just like all his other books are worth a second (and fourth..) read,. Only that you'll know the story by then! The pace of the book was fast and the story unpredictable. One moment you feel you know it all, you've found a pattern, but you are wrong yet again. From his clear and vivid 3d-like description, you'll feel like you are right behind the protagonist, Matt Cross in his adventures. My advice, don't predict just purchase and read. You'll be thrilled.Best Sci-fi I've ever read.

By MysteryAddict "Satellite Lost" is a suspenseful, thought-provoking, original work by ancreative author who has firmly established himself in the world of science fiction. This story and his two "Endlight" novels benefit from his technical backgroundin that he presents plausible scenarios based on today's science extrapolatedinto the future. His characters are real and engaging and his scene descriptionsimmerse the reader in the story. "Satellite Lost" is a great read and would alsomake a fine movie.

A well paced story about Destiny, discrimination, love, murder, revenge and the ultimate understanding between people in small town America. Houlton, Maine, doesn’t afford many opportunities to members of the Maliseet tribe of Native Americans—including young Padgett Harvey, who is half Maliseet, half white.

After her parents are murdered and her grandparents die in a fire, twelve-year-old Padgett is unceremoniously thrust into the foster care system. But despite her rough beginnings, she excels in school, goes to college, and enjoys a meteoric rise through the world of finance in New York City.

Like Padgett, Sean Patrick McGuinness had a rocky start in Houlton—albeit in the poor Irish part of town. And like Padgett, he relied on his wits and his charm to get out of town and never look back.

But destiny has a way of calling people home, and Padgett and Sean Patrick can’t escape Houlton forever—especially when their friends at home need them the most.

With money on the line, old rivalries from Padgett’s and Sean Patrick’s childhood rear their heads—and things get ugly. Will returning to Houlton undo everything Padgett and Sean Patrick worked so hard to achieve? Or does destiny have something surprising in store?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. RLS at his Best By Rocky Macy Somewhere over the past few years I acquired a copy of a wonderful collection of stories by the famed author Robert Louis Stevenson. The volume, New Arabian Nights, is a mere one-hundred-and-ten years old, and in very good condition. While I can't remember when or where I bought it (undoubtedly in a flea market somewhere), it resurfaced recently as I was unboxing the books that I had stored in Arizona while I was overseas - and I put it in a stack next to my bed.The collection began with a bit of a sarcastic "note" which indicated that the author had been victimized by a plagiarist. He said:"I must prefix a word of thanks to the gentleman who condescended to borrow the gist of one of my stories, and even to honor it with the addition of his signature. This mark of appreciation emboldened me to make the present collection."Ouch!Prior to tackling this interesting collection, my only experiences with Stevenson had been his classic tales for youth, Kidnapped and Treasure Island. The stories of New Arabian Nights were written for an older and more worldly audience. The author, ever the master storyteller, managed to showcase his humor, dramatic flare, and superior plotting abilities in the six stories of this collection. His subjects ranged from a young man who accidentally backed into a house late at night through a door that wasn't latched, only to find that once inside there was no way out - to chronicling the nocturnal adventures of a pair of entertainers (husband and wife) who were locked out of their Paris hotel for a night because they returned after it had been secured for the evening. The best story in the collection is "The Suicide Club," a dark tale in which a European prince got himself entangled in a group of men who all had a desire to die. He assumed from what little he knew of the club, (he did not really want to die, and joined just to study the drama of the others), that he would be relatively safe. However, he learned at his first meeting that the club met each evening and the person who would die that night as well as the person who would do the killing were both determined through a game of chance. The prince, alas, was too proud to back out of his membership in the organization. Macabre complications ensued.Stevenson's stories in this collection were all very original. Each of the six took place in or around London or Paris, with a couple set in the 1400's and the others in Stevenson's own era of the late 1800's. They examined the human condition through tales of greed, revenge, murder, and even love. All had twists and turns aplenty, and were as captivating as they were clever.Robert Louis Stevenson was quite the prolific writer. I thoroughly enjoyed New Arabian Nights and will be on the lookout for more of his works. I predict he has a golden literary future!

In the hierarchy of Hell, Lilith is at the bottom. She controls no territory nor does she oversee the punishment of The Guilty. She simply lives in her quiet cave with her only companion, Ornias, her demonic slave and only friend. What separates her from the other demons is that she was once human. Tired of being treated like a second-class citizen in the most hostile environment in the universe, she devises a plan to rise in the ranks of Hell. Along with Ornias, they plot to give Satan, who still longs to be the Most High, the one thing that he doesn't have: a son. Lilith and Ornias choose a lonely woman as a viable host to carry the gift child, but things don't go exactly as planned. Abominable seeds are born to them and are considered High Treason in Heaven and Hell. Rather than destroy the children, Lilith chooses to raise them as her own, turning her into a fugitive. Her only option to escape certain punishment is to flee to Earth. Thousands of years ago when Evil would rise, God would raise up a mighty warrior to protect his people. Warriors like Moses, Joshua, David, and the Mighty Samson were called to save the Israelites from certain destruction. However, to save the Earth from annihilation, God will have to raise up another, something he hasn't done since the Old Testament Prophets. Who will answer the Lord's call and stand against the Kingdom of Darkness? As unlikely a choice that he is, John Summers will. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Andrea was more excited than she’d ever been in her life. She felt like a teenager again. Her life was about to change. By sheer luck, she had met a man who wanted to help her launch her career. She arrived at her job at the bank, submitted a resignation letter to her manager, and made the rounds saying goodbye to coworkers, telling them she was leaving to become a model. They were all happy for her, and that very day, her last, they surprised her with a farewell cake, ordered from the local baker, who had told the butcher, who had told his customers, who had told their friends and families about Andrea’s plans. By that very afternoon, the news had spread everywhere. “Don’t forget about us when you become a big star,” her coworkers said, and she promised she wouldn’t. After work, she raced home and got pulled over by Tommy, a police officer and a friend since high school. Even he knew the good news. For old time’s sake, he wrote her a speeding ticket. He had no intention of filing it. She hugged him, and he sent her on her way. Once home, Andrea showered and put on her best-smelling perfume. Twenty minutes later she was leaving for the bar, arriving there ninety minutes early. Sally gave her a big hug and a kiss and told her that the drinks were on the house. Everyone there was wishing Andrea well. In a town of less than nine hundred people, the news had traveled fast. Andrea sat at a table and waited for the handsome and eccentric Oscar to walk into the bar and rescue her from her dreary existence. She looked at her watch. It was fifteen minutes to eight. Her heart began pounding. She fought hard to control her breathing and to remain calm. Suddenly the doors opened, and Andrea looked up. An unfamiliar woman walked in. This beautiful red-haired stranger was new in town, but she wasn’t dressed fancy like Oscar had been. She wore a white flower dress, a dark denim jacket, and open-toed sandals. She looked nice but not unlike any other woman you’d see in a big city. She sat down at the bar. Andrea’s curiosity was piqued, so she struck up a conversation with the stranger. “You’re not from around here, are you?” she asked. “Is it that obvious?” “Yeah, it is. We don’t get a lot of strangers around here.” “Sophia.” “Andrea.” “Now we aren’t strangers,” Sophia said. “I guess not.” “What can I get you to drink, honey?” asked Sally. “Water is fine,” Sophia answered. “Water? Ha! What are you, a nun?” “Ha-ha, no. I can drink like a fish, but I’m driving to Missouri.” “Oh, what part?” “KC.” “Oh, really. I’m actually supposed to be heading there tonight.” “No kidding. By yourself?” Sophia asked. “No, I met a guy yesterday, but it’s not what you think.” “I didn’t think anything …What’s out there?” “I feel kind of silly telling you this,” Andrea confessed. “Here ya go, honey,” Sally interrupted with the water. “And take this Black Jack over to your new BFF.” “Thanks.” She took her drink, left the bar to sit next to Andrea, and handed her the Black Jack. “Do you mind?” “No, not at all.” “Okay, so tell me why you’re headed out there,” Sophia asked. “Well, yesterday, I met this guy, a talent agent, and somehow he gets lost and he ended up in Wilsonton. Anyway he strikes up a conversation with me, and he thinks I have potential to be a model and wants me to travel with him to Missouri and eventually California. I know it sounds strange and maybe even naïve but … I’m going to take a chance.” “It doesn’t sound naïve to me. I’m sure Oscar told you a pretty convincing story,” Sophia said. “How do you know his name? Who are you?” Andrea stood from the table, bumping into a barmaid and making her spill her order of drinks. Just then Sophia stood and the entire bar froze in time except for she and Andrea. Andrea looked around and then looked at the woman who was a couple inches shorter than she. “Okay, what the hell is going on?” Andrea yelled in panic. “Keep calm, Andrea Lewis-Rose. I’m a friend. My name is Sophia, and I’m here to warn you about Oscar.” “Warn me?” “Yes, he is not who he claims to be. Do not trust him. The Kingdom of Darkness has conspired against you. I don’t know what they are planning, but it will be terrible, I can assure you.” “The Kingdom of Darkness? Do I look stupid to you? I don’t believe you. I don’t even know you.” “But I know you. I know about your abusive husband. I know that he is dead now from drunk driving. He is suffering in Hell right now as we speak.” “So what? Everybody in this town knew about my abusive husband, and if he is burning in Hell, the drunk bastard deserves every second he’s there.” “I know your son.” “Well see, that’s where you’re wrong, because I’ve never had a child, let alone a son.” “No, you do have a son. His name is David Lewis-Rose. He came to Heaven as a six-month-old baby the night he died. He died when you were kicked down the stairs. He and I are great friends. He asked me to come down to warn you. He’s been keeping a close eye on your Chronicles ever since he grew up and learned about you. He loves you so very much and wants you to be with him in Heaven. He is bright, strong, and courageous. Most importantly, he loves The One, our Creator very much.” “David?” She said as a tear fell from her eyes. She was crying because this was the name that she chose for her son. She never told anyone the name she picked; not even Kenneth knew. “If you’re telling the truth then, he should be eighteen now.” “Yes,” Sophia confirmed. “How do you know all this? What are you?” At this question, Sophia took a big risk, and she transformed into a beautiful angel in front of Andrea’s eyes. Sophia was gorgeous; she wore a pristine white sleeveless robe. The bottom part of the robe ended at her mid-thighs, and she looked much like the ginger woman who met Andrea in the bar except her hair was made of actual fire. Her eyes were stunning, reddish orange, and positively amazing. Her white feathery wings resembled that of a majestic eagle, and her wingspan was seven feet long. Andrea could hardly believe what she was seeing. She felt serenity, love, and strength, but also fear and disorientation, and her heart rate rose. This state of euphoria left Andrea transfixed, and she simply stared at the angel that was undeniably spectacular and terrifying at the same time. She couldn’t say a word as she looked up to the being that now stood taller than she. “Oh, my God. Are you an angel?” “Yes, I am. And the man you know as Oscar is really a demon named Ornias. He is very dangerous, and you must flee this place. Drive west to the next town. I will meet you there and will take you the rest of the way to the West Coast. I must leave now.” “Wait, tell me more.” Sophia transformed back to a human woman and fixed the barmaid’s food and drinks as she talked to Andrea. “No, there isn’t any time. Just do as I say, and everything will work out fine.” Sophia left the bar, and when she did time unfroze and the barmaid steadied her tray as Andrea backed away and wondered what she had truly just witnessed. “Oops, almost made a mess there. Sorry, Andrea,” the barmaid said. Andrea halfheartedly acknowledged her and ran into the bathroom to gather herself. Outside the bar, Sophia turned on a car without a key and began driving west to the next town to meet Andrea. Suddenly, a man appeared in the middle of the road, and she swerved, hitting a light pole. Sophia lay dazed as a gash on her forehead bled right above her eye. Had she been in Heaven or in her angelic body, she wouldn’t have been injured at all; but here, she opened the car door, unfastened her seatbelt, and stumbled out of the car. She called out to the man and asked if he was okay, but all she could see were two eerie blood-red eyes. A demon. She didn’t know who it was, but that it was evil all the same. Sophia summoned all of her remaining strength and transformed into the magnificent being that had appeared before Andrea. She began healing, but it didn’t change two facts: She was tired from the crash she had just endured, and she wasn’t a warrior. She was a messenger. However, every angel is equipped with heavenly armor. Whether or not they are warrior-class angels, all angels prepare for battle, because whenever they enter Earth’s atmosphere, they can be attacked at any moment. Nevertheless, before things had escalated any further, she would attempt to communicate with the demon that stood in the shadows, out of the light of the other remaining light pole. “Who are you, demon?” Sophia called out. The demon didn’t reply. “Answer me. Maybe we can come to a resolution,” Sophia called out again. “There will be no resolution,” the demon said. Sophia recognized the voice and summoned her armor by the power of her mind, and then suddenly a gold chest plate, helmet, shin guards, boots, gauntlets, shield, and a sword appeared. Even the top and bottom of her wings were covered with some sort of gold protective plating, but the middle of the wings were left exposed; they weren’t indestructible, only protected. “Ornias,” Sophia said, taking a defensive posture. Ornias stepped out from the shadows. He was prepared for battle, donning the same armor as Sophia except his was blackened with rough edges. “Did you think I would not see you talking to Andrea? I saw everything through the window. I even watched you reveal yourself to that worthless wench.” Ornias seethed. “What do you want with her?” “If I just told you, you’d never know the satisfaction of earning it. How about we fight for it?” Ornias continued, “If you win, I will tell you our plans for Andrea. If I win, then I will keep you alive just long enough to find out what those plans are. Fair enough?” “I do not wish to fight you,” Sophia admitted in a last-ditch effort to dissuade him from a melee. “At this point, what you wish is irrelevant,” Ornias declared. Ornias attacked Sophia. She tried to hold her ground, parrying when possible and blocking other flurries. Ornias swung his dark sword. Demonic steel and angelic steel met. Although Sophia wasn’t a warrior, she was no slouch either, having taken lessons from the great Archangel Michael. She tried her best to dodge as many of the attacks as she could, but Ornias’s strength, combined with the fact that he was well rested, gave him a distinct advantage. When he finally saw an opening in Sophia’s defense, he exploited it. Ornias elbowed Sophia in the face. He dodged a back roundhouse kick and hit her with the handle of his sword. Sophia stumbled back, gathered her footing, and lunged forward in a straight stabbing motion. Ornias swiftly evaded her attempt and kneed her in the midsection, which knocked the wind out of her. He spun around and swung his shield in a backhanded motion, and it collided with her face. Sophia landed on her back from the strong blow, and her armor vanished. She was abruptly left dangerously vulnerable. When Ornias noticed the battle was nearing its end, he powered down his armor, but his assault on Sophia took a ruthless turn. Ornias mounted a defenseless Sophia and punched her repeatedly, lacerating her face. Angelic blood spilled from her nose and mouth. He then lifted Sophia above his head and slammed her into the car. She lay still, clearly battered from the fight. Ornias approached her and peeled her from the car, now totally destroyed after having body-slammed Sophia into it. He threw the helpless angel onto the road, and he put his foot into her back. He pulled at her left wing as hard as he could and ripped it from her body. Then he did the same to the right. Sophia cried out in pain. The deafening shriek shattered the lightbulb. Her flaming hair was extinguished, and then she blacked out. The only light on the road came from the faint red-and-white glows their spiritual bodies emanated.

He creates good visuals of characters and scenes, which allows the reader to know that he put thought into his writing. He weaves through different stories of the characters, which leaves you wanting to know exactly what is going to happen next. My favorite character is Lilith, you cannot help but fall in love with her. She has so many different layers that despite who she is, you have to like her. Whether you are religious or not, you can find something in this book to relate to. From the action scenes, to dealing with internal struggles as many of us deal with. I cannot wait to read the next books!

There was a lot of imagery; as I read I was able to create a mind movie. Some of my favorite lines from the book were:"It wasn't the attack of a seasoned warrior; it was the attack of an undisciplined madman. " p.12"Feelings can betray you. Not everything that feels good is good." p. 93"How dare a human enter into hell without first being processed?" p. 225

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Oustanding, once again! By Benjamin Thomas I had been so delighted to read the first book in Kathy Miner’s series that I was seriously worried I might be let down by the second. That seems to happen frequently—trying to capture lightning in a bottle twice. Fortunately, I can report that all is well and book two is a marvelous continuation of book one. This is not your ordinary post-apocalyptic fiction. There are no zombies, no vampires or aliens, and this is not a Mad Max re-do. This is very much what I would imagine our world would be like if a near extinction-level plague event were to hit our planet. Added into the mix is the fact that some people seem to be evolving and discovering latent abilities, like a sixth sense, albeit different for each person. These abilities would naturally impact behavior and one’s approach toward survival. For example, how does one live their life when they can see their own future path, including their death? Or what if you could gently force others to do your will or you could literally see the emotional attachments that people have with one another.Yes these novels are about survival and how the various characters come to deal with what they face but more fundamentally, especially in this volume, it is about what makes us who we are. When stripped down to the bare essentials of what makes us human…we are not all the same nor do we react in the same ways. The characters in this novel must face the most extreme hardships, both physically and emotionally. I speak from experience when I say that the author absolutely nails the emotions that one experiences over time when faced with the loss of a loved one, especially a child. The struggle to form a community is constant and, once again I will repeat, this is exactly how I picture it would happen. The ending makes it clear there will be a third novel and I am looking forward to it with great anticipation.

How the author has captivated such a curiosity in every single character in this book..I not only have this in the e-reader form but also in paperback, it's become a book I need to have in my hand..It's a read over again book. I can't express enough to people to read this book ! The imagination of this author is magic, She has taken a topic to a whole new level, a believable level, a level to which ones asks themselves the question? "What would we do? How would we react? Who could you trust? And how do we go on to rebuild"..I have nothing but praise for this book, this author ! READ IT AND READ IT AGAIN !!!

Hated the really bad guys; they varied between those with redemptive options on down to the truly despotic. Liked some of the 'out of the box' weird good guys & especially enjoyed their growth grappling with personal challenges. No spoilers here but I gotta say it was hard to put down & I stayed up way to late finishing it!
