Who Killed the High Priestess Thermafi? Palace intrigue...sibling rivalries...mysticism...murder. Hidden From the Face of Humans is a sweeping epic that brings to vivid life the last native Egyptian dynasty of 400 BCE. Behind the banquets and the festivities, the world-changing battles and maneuvers, are the great powers of the day: the pharaohs of Egypt, Plato of Athens, Persian King Artaxerxes, and Spartan King Agesilaus. Moving serenely amidst the political turmoil is Thermafi, an Egyptian Priestess of Isis who, like the Magi of the Middle Eastern deserts and the oracles at Delphi, travels the ancient, timeless path of the unseen. Thermafi seeks no power for herself, but she is privy to the secrets of the powerful. As the beloved confidante of the pharaoh and revered teacher of the heirs to the Egyptian throne, Thermafi has hidden enemies—and someone wants her dead. A tour de force dramatizing actual events and characters, Hidden from the Face of Humans offers ingenious solutions to longtime historical mysteries—and a page-turning entertainment.

Hidden From the Face of Humans: A Mystery of the Last Egyptian Dynasty, by Susan J Slack

About the Author Susan J Slack has dipped her toes into some fascinating fields. Since the age of five she performed in front of adoring parents, neighbors and classmates until at age seventeen someone finally started paying her. She sings, drums, dances and acts having studied with brilliant, inspiring artists from around the world. As owner of the Open Circle Players, a touring children's theatre company, she unearthed almost forgotten folktales and brought them to life on stage. This allowed the opportunity for students and families to experience other world views. Finding just the right stories required reading all of Grimm, all 1001 Arabian Nights, every Native North and South American tale in print, countless Asian and African stories. Her work with children in this performance setting and also in classrooms as a Teaching Artist sponsored by Arts Councils and non-profits, culminated in the writing of her first book, "Come Join the Circle; Singing and Dancing for Early Childhood Education." Susan also studied world religions with many teachers, read sacred texts, sweat in many lodges and sat on many meditation cushions. She learned songs from world traditions through the Dances of Universal Peace, a newer name for the ancient community-building practices through which we humans have learned to live together. Because she wanted to guarantee authenticity to this story, she spent over seven years researching in dusty books, beautiful museums and engaging interviews. Now happily settled in Sarasota Florida, the quiet crystal beaches allow time to finally write this story, the one that has been nagging for so many years.

An epic tale of love, dynastic politics and superpower intrigue in the ancient Middle East By ndk Hidden from the Face of Humans is a rich, many-layered story, spanning nearly a hundred years in the late ancient Middle East. This era, which takes us through the last native-born Egyptian dynasty to the rise of Alexander the Great, mirrors the type of superpower struggles that we see in the region today. The human story of the book centers around Themafi, a priestess of Isis, who becomes the close advisor of Pharoah Nectanebo I. Nothing about this book is predictable, including the deeply touching, yet unfulfilled, love between the two. Many of the scenes are stunning and stayed with this reader long after finishing the book.As another reviewer notes, this could easily have been two books. Although subtitled ‘a mystery of the last Egyptian dynasty,’ the book transcends the standard ‘historical mystery’ genre. It is a really an epic family historical novel—Dynasty in the ancient Near East. About midway through the two main characters disappear (at least in person) and their influence—through students, children and those who knew them—continues. The solution that the author gives to several historical “mysteries,” such as the reason for Alexander coming to Egypt to recognized as a ‘son of god,’ are very plausible.I have read several historical mysteries set in ancient Egypt and this is by far the best.--Neil Douglas-Klotz, author of Desert Wisdom and Prayers of the Cosmos

The characters have breath and voice and genuine humanity. The story is as intricate as the competing desires of strong-willed individuals. I got lost in this book, and I loved every moment.More thoughts:"Hidden" is remarkable for many reasons, the first of which occurred to me about one-third of the way through the book: the story within these pages is massive, complex--and fully contained within a single novel. I can only imagine how many umpteen books other writers would devote to this tale; the fact that Slack has captured the full story in a single volume is commendable and remarkable in today's book world.Because nearly 80 years of history occupy this novel, events unfold at a pace that encourages brisk, hypnotic reading. Entire years will pass between chapters, characters will age over a few pages, battles wax and wane within a paragraph. Incredibly, the story never feels rushed or shallow, for Slack emphasizes the human consequences of major events over the play-by-play plotting that usually accompanies this kind of book. For example, after two characters plan an attack on a city, the story jumps to the very end of this battle and focuses on the dread and sickness that one of the characters, who is new to battle and bloodshed, experiences in the aftermath. And while I do appreciate a good battle scene, I got a lot more out of this exchange than I usually experience from a gory bloodletting.Another characteristic of this book that stands out is that the story and its characters are so very adult. Slack's characters act upon emotions and desires that ring true to thinking consistent with the time period. Religion plays a massive part in this story, and Slack conveys a sense of deep-rooted faith without bringing in actual gods or miraculous acts. People believe in gods and their supernatural agency, because that is how people at the time may have viewed the world. Slack also shows an impressive understanding of how much fear influences a person's decisions and actions.Sometimes, historical fiction feels like a costume drama, with modern mindsets and personalities dressed up and armed to fit the desired period, but lacking any sense of being rooted in the past. Slack far surpasses and grounds the story in its setting by describing textures, sounds and sights, along with the emotions that drive her characters. While reading this book, I felt like I was experiencing another place and time entire. Even now, I miss some of the characters and their warm humanity. "Hidden From the Face of Humans" is a singular novel, and my life feels richer for having lived in its pages.

By Ted Susan Slack as done it again!A spellbinding tale of intrigue set in the ancient world, the attention to detail is amazing, and the epic tale reminds me of a work like The Mist of Avelon.A must read if you love to dream yourself back in time to a lost world and way of life.
