Harriet Cassidy discovered that monsters were real at the age of 14. When she burned them alive in her own home after they had killed her mother. Years later she uses the skills learned from her late father, a civil war veteran, to hunt down evil men and monsters in the old west. Years after her mother's horrific death her father meets his own demise. Blamed by her sister for his death, Harriet finds herself wandering the trail alone. No destination and no purpose in mind. Searching for shelter to get out of winter’s grasp, she stumbles upon the remains of a family that have been eaten and skinned alive. After observing the grisly scene, she knows no human could have done this and searches out the nearest town looking for answers and to get the family a proper burial. She finds the town of Stillwater. A mining town whose people live in fear of a reclusive mine owner and their only protection is an old indian fighter for a sheriff who has a green horn for a deputy. On arrival Harriet is stripped of her weapons and confronted by the mine’s hired muscle, for defending a young girls innocence. This is when those years of scraping with warlocks and demons comes in handy, and she makes short work of them with the help of Jack, a rugged woodsman who turns into a wolf on nights of the full moon. Not a whole day passes before more people turn up dead. With Harriets curiosity peaked she goes on the hunt for this unknown killer. She recruits Jack, and together they seek a mysterious indian tribe unsoiled by europeans, to find their answers. They find though that those answers may come at a cost, and what Harriet does find out may mean more to her than she ever would have imagined. “The Wendigo and the Werewolf” is a supernatural western and the first of a series. It contains elements of horror, fantasy, action, and a smidgen of romance.

Creating a Language-Rich Math Class: Strategies and Activities for Building Conceptual Understanding (Eye on Education Books), by Sandra L. Atkins

Review

"Having worked with Dr. Atkins in an elementary math classroom, I observed how her approach built conceptual understandings and mathematical connections for students. These practices build the foundation for true mathematical proficiency." --Dana McCauley, Ed.D., Teaching Principal, Crellin Elementary School, MD

"If you want to get to the root cause of students’ misconceptions, misunderstandings and disconnects associated with their mathematical thinking, this book is your go-to-guide. This powerful resource doesn’t offer rules, gimmicks, or tricks to help in sustaining students understanding, but rather provides clear and precise strategies and investigations that will help with creating and navigating a language-rich classroom. The use of this well-organized and detailed book will certainly result in learning for all stakeholders in the classroom, students as well as teachers." --Melinda Hamilton, Instructional Coach of Professional Development Services and Former Secondary Math Teacher of Orange County Public Schools, FL

"This book shows the importance of listening--really listening--to what students tell us are their understandings of mathematics. The strategies Dr. Atkins shares for gaining this important information are described in such detail that it’s easy to envision using them. I’ll recommend this easy read to teachers often in the coming years." --Lori Williams, Ph.D., K-12 Math Specialist, Manitowoc Public School District, WI

About the Author

Sandra L. Atkins is committed to finding those ‘AHA moments’ when mathematical connections are made by teachers and students. She currently works with school districts across the United States through her company, Creating AHAs.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Contrived but enjoyable By Douglas J. Bassett During the Sepoy mutiny, a young British officer on his first overseas assignment gets involved in the feud between two Maharajahs.RUNG HO! is fairly typical British Raj rah-rah stuff, but Mundy is already revealing himself to be a natural storyteller, and anyone who likes things like THE FOUR FEATHERS or BEAU GESTE would be hard pressed not to like this as well. The story is very contrived and routine, but its enjoyable to go on Mundy's ride for the most part. He obviously knew India, at least certain segments of India, and brings that world vividly to life. He sketches his characters economically and broadly but they do stand out on the page. He shifts pov often but manages to keep the story going, not always an easy thing to do, and even his more incidental characters get to do interesting or amusing things. (One of the secrets of a natural storyteller -- and Mundy had this gift -- is to tell stories within stories, little setups/payoffs embedded within the larger narrative.) Mundy also has a strong narrative voice, a wise, sometimes critical observer of the action, and that helps tremendously in these sorts of things as well.Knocked a star off partly for some awkward narrative contrivances in setting up the climax (a certain character at one point has to behave dumber than is plausible, then directly afterwards has to be braver than is plausible. Mundy tries to buttress this, so he obviously saw it as a weak spot himself, but I don't think he handwaves it away completely) and partly for a heavy-handed overreliance on "keeping one's word" as a unadulterated good *at* the climax, which I do buy in some respects but seems out of kilter with the psychology of the characters as presented. In short, here and there Mundy leans on the contrivances a bit much, and if you read this you'll pick up on it yourself.Still, for an early novel very enjoyable.

Trapped in a loveless marriage, Lady Julia Winterton turns to her handsome and wealthy neighbour, Lord Richard Summerville, for comfort. But before she can tell him their afternoon of passion has born fruit, she learns that he has proposed marriage to her sister, Bethany. When her cruel husband learns of her pregnancy, he threatens to smother her child at birth and Julia has no choice other than to flee. Taking all the money and jewels she can find, she escapes and arrives at a farm, where she meets Charles Carlisle. Although he is a humble farmer, she falls in love with him and when her husband comes looking for her, with a warrant for her arrest on the grounds of adultery and theft, the couple are forced to flee with her baby son. They find a manor house, Sinclair Manor, a house abandoned when the Sinclair family were all condemned and executed for heresy. As the brutal reign of Bloody Mary continues, the couple become central to the Protestant cause and put their lives in danger to help hundreds to escape to France. But will they survive to see the Protestant Elizabeth become Queen and turn the tide?

Liked the Book By Callie The book was about ordinary people during the rein of Bloody Mary.Sir Geoffrey Winterton married Julia for money and to hide that he was a homosexual. He only bedded her once so she couldn't get the marriage annulled. She was so innocent she did not understand why he didn't. He had warned her not to have anything to do with Sir Richard Summerville whose estate was next to them. She instead went and had sex with him he told her up front he wanted nothing more than sex with her. She had a younger sister Bethany who was coming to stay with them and see if she could find a husband. Julia finds out she is pregnant Richard informed her of her husband's true character.it too long for her to claim it is her husband's. She is going to tell Richard but finds out he is now betrothed to her sister. You will read their story in another book .her husband finds out she is pregnant so he tells her he will kill the baby. She steals his jewelry and runs away .she goes to a farm and meets Charles Carlisle a farmer. She remains with him has the baby and lives a much different life. Geoffrey finds where they live so they escape from him. Julia and he work with helping the Protestants escape from Bloody Mary's evil .An event happens which I can't go into which shifts the story line . You will meet characters from other stories in this book.. Sir Richard appears as well as others in more than one book. A liked the story. I have three more to read bought all her books on this subject.

I must admit my bias of being a rabid Giants fan and fondness of Bochy from years of watching his calm demeanor leading the Giants to 3 World Series Championships. So naturally, I was looking eagerly into getting to know Bochy a little more through his book. The book is a nice selection of short chapters of Bochy describing his passion for walking in different cities across the United States; often cities that the Giants travel to as part of their schedule. Bochy reflects nicely on some history of each area and points of interest, while also recounting funny stories involving players and dabbles in some philosophy. All of it sounding very much like it would sound if you were hearing him speak it. casual pacing, simple wording, and not a lot of fluff. Put simply, well, that's Bochy.I learned a bit about some areas in the states, laughed a bit a some of his stories, and overall was pleased with a man who seems dedicated to his wife (often his walking partner) and who enjoys being in the present. I liked Bochy before the book, I like him even more after the book. Thanks for a little share into your world Boch :D

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A fun read. By KellyG A fun read.. Feels as though I am sitting with Bochy in a coffee shop, acquainting ourselves with each other as he pours over his passion for walking in some familiar places. Giant fans and walkers will love this book and couch potatoes will be inspired. My dad will be getting a copy for father's day!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Delightful conversation with Boch! By Larry Lynch I read about SF Giants manager Bruce Bochy's new book on the SF Gate Giants app (which I highly recommend for the reviews of games and the latest news about the team) and bought the Kindle version immediately.Bochy describes a series of walks he likes to take in San Francisco along the waterfront and in cities where the Giants play, including Chicago, Cincinnati, and New York City. The voice sounds just like Bochy, folksy, down to earth, friendly. He shares bits and pieces of his outlook on life and philosophy and a little of his personal history as well. He often mentions his wife of 37 years, Kim, whom he describes as "power walker," and of course there are anecdotes about baseball and the Giants. For anyone interested in baseball, walking, and the colorful manager of the San Francisco Giants, this is a book to be savored.

Inventor James Wainwright's greatest desire is to be left alone in his workshop, where he can focus on invention and engineering unsullied by the messiness of London society and the meaningless concerns of its upper classes. His financial patron, gentleman Alton Bartleby, has higher aspirations. To continue to receive funding James will have to venture out into the outside world as a detective, turning his inventive genius to the creation of new forensic technologies. Bartleby and James is a steampunk mystery collection that tells the story of the detectives' foray into private investigation. In "And They Called Her Spider" they hunt an impossible assassin, trying to end her reign of terror before she can disrupt Queen Victoria's Platinum Jubilee. In "Maiden Voyage of the Rio Grande" the detectives fight to clear James' name aboard an airship before sabotage sends them crashing into the city below. "On the Trail of the Scissorman" sends the pair after a monstrous serial killer turning London's children into orphans. Finally, "A Matter of Spirit" delves into the shadow world of séances and spiritualism as they look for a missing medium in the parlors of Knightsbridge... and beyond. Bartleby and James is the first book in the Galavanic Century series of steampunk mysteries and thrillers, taking readers to an alternate 1910s where Queen Victoria yet rules and the psuedo-scientific beliefs of the Victorians work as they believed them to.

About the Author Michael Coorlim is a teller of strange stories for stranger people. He collects them, the oddballs. The mystics and fire-spinners, the sages and tricksters. He curates their tales, combines their elements and lets them rattle around inside his rock-tumbler skull until they gleam, then spills them loose onto the page for like-minded readers to enjoy.

From Black and White to Technicolor By brujaja Just a little ways into this book, it struck me what a brilliant idea is the combination of Sherlock Holmes-type stories with the endlessly innovative world of steampunk. The Holmes mysteries always fascinated me; but one of their limitations was that they were circumscribed by the rather rigid time out of which they came. To transcribe that basic formula, with its Edwardian charm, to the much broader world of the possible represented in steampunk, is a bit like the change from black and white to technicolor. In addition, one very important thing always missing in the Holmes mysteries was a strong human element. The landlady and Watson's wife were seldom mentioned and never more than inconsequential trappings. The fact that this this element is warmly and artfully welcomed into this book in the "Scissorman" story renders the whole work involving and meaningful in a way that the indisputably masterful Holmes stories never were.I will certainly be reading the entire series, and then agitating for more.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a galvanic blast By elfshanx I haven't read any steampunk before this collection, but based on how much fun this was, I've got a whole new genre I need to immerse myself in. I loved the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle references. If you've ever read Doyle, but wished Watson was funnier, then James is the narrator you've been waiting for. He's gruff, he's got that dry humor, he just wants to be left alone to tinker in his workshop...UNLESS the case has something to do with engineering. Then he's ready to piece together what's going on right the heck now. I just love him. Bartleby's mercurial moods, luxurious taste, and "social savant"-ness were a hilarious foil to James.I know there are a couple reviews saying that the reveals in the first couple stories don't give enough information on how Bartleby came to his conclusions, but I never thought, "I wonder how he figured this out." The clues and information all seemed to be deftly written into the story.I've been trying to decide which of these was my favorite, but that's a tough call. Each story is more fun than the last, so being last, "Matter of Spirit" is technically my favorite, but they were all such a blast to read.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. fun read, a little edwardian steampunk, detective mystery By Tyler D The content and story line is fun. the Characters are developed and quirky. Its an enjoyable read. I would consider it Edwardian Steampunk, which could be summarized as "England, 1900, with science fiction". Most of all, I like the writers style. He keeps things going without adding fluff to get the page numbers up. I like that. Also, he has a great grasp of the english language and he seems to excel at dialogue.

Who Killed the High Priestess Thermafi? Palace intrigue...sibling rivalries...mysticism...murder. Hidden From the Face of Humans is a sweeping epic that brings to vivid life the last native Egyptian dynasty of 400 BCE. Behind the banquets and the festivities, the world-changing battles and maneuvers, are the great powers of the day: the pharaohs of Egypt, Plato of Athens, Persian King Artaxerxes, and Spartan King Agesilaus. Moving serenely amidst the political turmoil is Thermafi, an Egyptian Priestess of Isis who, like the Magi of the Middle Eastern deserts and the oracles at Delphi, travels the ancient, timeless path of the unseen. Thermafi seeks no power for herself, but she is privy to the secrets of the powerful. As the beloved confidante of the pharaoh and revered teacher of the heirs to the Egyptian throne, Thermafi has hidden enemies—and someone wants her dead. A tour de force dramatizing actual events and characters, Hidden from the Face of Humans offers ingenious solutions to longtime historical mysteries—and a page-turning entertainment.

Hidden From the Face of Humans: A Mystery of the Last Egyptian Dynasty, by Susan J Slack

About the Author Susan J Slack has dipped her toes into some fascinating fields. Since the age of five she performed in front of adoring parents, neighbors and classmates until at age seventeen someone finally started paying her. She sings, drums, dances and acts having studied with brilliant, inspiring artists from around the world. As owner of the Open Circle Players, a touring children's theatre company, she unearthed almost forgotten folktales and brought them to life on stage. This allowed the opportunity for students and families to experience other world views. Finding just the right stories required reading all of Grimm, all 1001 Arabian Nights, every Native North and South American tale in print, countless Asian and African stories. Her work with children in this performance setting and also in classrooms as a Teaching Artist sponsored by Arts Councils and non-profits, culminated in the writing of her first book, "Come Join the Circle; Singing and Dancing for Early Childhood Education." Susan also studied world religions with many teachers, read sacred texts, sweat in many lodges and sat on many meditation cushions. She learned songs from world traditions through the Dances of Universal Peace, a newer name for the ancient community-building practices through which we humans have learned to live together. Because she wanted to guarantee authenticity to this story, she spent over seven years researching in dusty books, beautiful museums and engaging interviews. Now happily settled in Sarasota Florida, the quiet crystal beaches allow time to finally write this story, the one that has been nagging for so many years.

An epic tale of love, dynastic politics and superpower intrigue in the ancient Middle East By ndk Hidden from the Face of Humans is a rich, many-layered story, spanning nearly a hundred years in the late ancient Middle East. This era, which takes us through the last native-born Egyptian dynasty to the rise of Alexander the Great, mirrors the type of superpower struggles that we see in the region today. The human story of the book centers around Themafi, a priestess of Isis, who becomes the close advisor of Pharoah Nectanebo I. Nothing about this book is predictable, including the deeply touching, yet unfulfilled, love between the two. Many of the scenes are stunning and stayed with this reader long after finishing the book.As another reviewer notes, this could easily have been two books. Although subtitled ‘a mystery of the last Egyptian dynasty,’ the book transcends the standard ‘historical mystery’ genre. It is a really an epic family historical novel—Dynasty in the ancient Near East. About midway through the two main characters disappear (at least in person) and their influence—through students, children and those who knew them—continues. The solution that the author gives to several historical “mysteries,” such as the reason for Alexander coming to Egypt to recognized as a ‘son of god,’ are very plausible.I have read several historical mysteries set in ancient Egypt and this is by far the best.--Neil Douglas-Klotz, author of Desert Wisdom and Prayers of the Cosmos

The characters have breath and voice and genuine humanity. The story is as intricate as the competing desires of strong-willed individuals. I got lost in this book, and I loved every moment.More thoughts:"Hidden" is remarkable for many reasons, the first of which occurred to me about one-third of the way through the book: the story within these pages is massive, complex--and fully contained within a single novel. I can only imagine how many umpteen books other writers would devote to this tale; the fact that Slack has captured the full story in a single volume is commendable and remarkable in today's book world.Because nearly 80 years of history occupy this novel, events unfold at a pace that encourages brisk, hypnotic reading. Entire years will pass between chapters, characters will age over a few pages, battles wax and wane within a paragraph. Incredibly, the story never feels rushed or shallow, for Slack emphasizes the human consequences of major events over the play-by-play plotting that usually accompanies this kind of book. For example, after two characters plan an attack on a city, the story jumps to the very end of this battle and focuses on the dread and sickness that one of the characters, who is new to battle and bloodshed, experiences in the aftermath. And while I do appreciate a good battle scene, I got a lot more out of this exchange than I usually experience from a gory bloodletting.Another characteristic of this book that stands out is that the story and its characters are so very adult. Slack's characters act upon emotions and desires that ring true to thinking consistent with the time period. Religion plays a massive part in this story, and Slack conveys a sense of deep-rooted faith without bringing in actual gods or miraculous acts. People believe in gods and their supernatural agency, because that is how people at the time may have viewed the world. Slack also shows an impressive understanding of how much fear influences a person's decisions and actions.Sometimes, historical fiction feels like a costume drama, with modern mindsets and personalities dressed up and armed to fit the desired period, but lacking any sense of being rooted in the past. Slack far surpasses and grounds the story in its setting by describing textures, sounds and sights, along with the emotions that drive her characters. While reading this book, I felt like I was experiencing another place and time entire. Even now, I miss some of the characters and their warm humanity. "Hidden From the Face of Humans" is a singular novel, and my life feels richer for having lived in its pages.

By Ted Susan Slack as done it again!A spellbinding tale of intrigue set in the ancient world, the attention to detail is amazing, and the epic tale reminds me of a work like The Mist of Avelon.A must read if you love to dream yourself back in time to a lost world and way of life.

‘A rapid-fire thriller’ The New York Times England. 1069 A.D. In the years following the Norman conquest, the English are left seething under the yoke of foreign rule. All hope seems lost — until Hereward Leofricsson returns to reclaim his birthright, after earning the nickname ‘Hereward the Wake’ for his success fighting in the East. His fierce resolve, military cunning and gallant manner soon attract a dogged band of English freedom fighters, who are determined to recover their country or die in the attempt. But Hereward finds himself torn between his bitter hatred of the Norman conquerors and his love for Althya, a Norman noblewoman who proves herself to be just as resourceful, loyal and strong as he is. Hereward’s love for Althya also earns him a very dangerous enemy in the form of the sadistic Guy de Lussac, who is determined to marry Althya to settle an old score with her father. The Last Englishman is a stirring tale of bravery in the face of overwhelming odds and a compelling blend of history and legend, brimming with ancient magic as well as rigorous historical detail.

Adventure, bravery, romance and was likely played out hundreds of times in real life. I first read this book back in the '70's; it was a borrowed and battered paperback. Some years back I found a very nice hardcover copy I will never part with.

It is very well written and a grippingly good story about a legendary hero, almost like a tale told before a fire at night where one's imagination fills out the pictures. I highly recommend it.

No Irish Need Apply is a historical portrait of New York City's Hell's Kitchen chronicling the friendship and struggles of Johnny O'Hara and his friend Red, children of immigrants who escaped Ireland's Great Hunger. Orphaned at an early age, the boys struggle to survive amidst the poverty and anti-Irish Catholic prejudice of the day. As adults, Johnny and Red join an all-immigrant volunteer fire company that is despised by surrounding fire companies manned by American-born men. Unwittingly, the immigrants and the Americans, alike, are the victims of greedy elites who thrive on keeping them divided, resulting in many pitched battles on the streets and at fires. In No Irish Need Apply, Finucane captures the grit of the Irish immigrants and their will to survive and thrive, against a backdrop exploring New York's transition from a volunteer fire department to a professional fire department. No Irish Need Apply is also an inspirational love story with an unusual twist revealing the blood, sweat and passions of the Irish immigrants who helped build New York City.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Anya must mature to cope with changing times By Uvi Poznansky I am delighted to discover the next volume in the Anya Series, as I fell in love with the character in Volume I, which gave me a unique insight into Russian life during one of the most drastic political, economic, and social upheavals: the disintegration and ultimately the collapse of the Soviet Union. Set against this tubulent background, rife with confusion about Russia’s future, here is the quiet, lovely voice of Anya, as she goes through her coming of age. In Struggling to Survive, Anya is learning to cope as a mother facing many challenges. The writing fleshes out the Russian landscape, and it is dynamic from the start. The book opens with a haunting nightmare of disaster, as she frets what may happen to her husband: “As she reached for Yuri, the submarine behind him exploded into a gigantic fireball, quickly ungluing Yuri in a cloud of black smoke and red fire.” When her premonition comes true, we watch her coping with grief. “He promised to take care of her and protect her. Now, everything was different, as Anya had to take care of and protect her young child.”Her determination to survive is fascinating as we watch her learning to change with the time and maturing. No longer a child, she moves from the Russia to Poland and China, deals with challenging new situations as this story is expanded in scope and becomes a fast pace thriller, to the point that longing for peace is expressed with a little wink: “You can spend time with Larisa and me if you don’t mind our slow pace.”Five stars.

Romance and survival while a country goes through adolescence By kwadzana Author Julia Gousseva has that rare gift of storytelling that brings the reader into the story, cleverly weaving the historical and cultural background into the story line while making the reader feel for the characters. In Struggling to Survive we experience life in the new, modern Russia after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Change happened too quickly. For some, life was better but for others, it was difficult to survive. The government was no longer there to take care of people. This kind of “survival of the fittest” environment breeds crime and corruption and Anya and her companions fall prey to desperate people trying to survive.Anya’s character becomes real in this wonderful story. You can feel her suppressed sadness and you feel that deep down inside, even though she grieves for her late husband Yuri, she still has feelings for her first love Victor. But Victor is long gone; existing only in Anya’s memory. Who knows if she will ever even see him again? There are exciting twists and turns and surprises as the story unfolds but at the heart of the story is a long lost romance. We’ve all wondered, “what could have been” at some point in our lives. Few of us ever get that second chance. For Anya, it may be possible but she will have to decide if forgiveness and love are more powerful than the sadness and heartache that has become her passenger. As you read and feel and hope for Anya’s future to be bright and happy again, the book becomes a page turner. We’ve come to care about Anya and we wish for her happiness and we want to see how things turn out for her and Larisa.Struggling to Survive is highly recommended. I loved the wonderful, uplifting ending.

I was very tired after a long day, but I had to keep reading until I felt Anya was in a safe place. Because I like her, and because I wanted to know what happened to her. I finished the book the next day. Same reasons. "Struggling to Survive" is such a great story, and it is wonderfully written by Julia Gousseva. It is part two in what I hope will be a long series of "Anya" books. Like part one, this story takes place primarily in Russia, immediately following the breakup of the Soviet Union. A difficult time for many Russians, I imagine, and a very interesting setting for a story. I'm not going to spoil anything for you, but I will tell you that in this one, Anya visits all sorts of exotic places, and meets loads of interesting people along the way. The story telling and writing are both top notch. You're wondering about the title of my review, right? Yeah, I have a favorite sweater. I wear it all the time because I like the way it feels. And much like slipping into that sweater, it always feels comforting to me escaping into a good book. Like this one. I highly recommend it!

Ancient of Days: End of Perfection, by Marc Seraphs

Review In the "Ancient of Days: End of Perfection" obsession and guilty pleasures reaches dangerous heights posing the question: "how far will you go to grasp the dark desires of your heart?"At the founding of humankind, the "status quo" was challenged to spurn a rebel sovereignty, bringing an entailment of rebellious gods called Watchers (Fallen Stars), abandoning their celestial abode to run amuck amongst humankind.Among them, Archael, a Watcher unbecomingly finds himself enkindled with infatuation as he machinates to sate his desire...Potiphera, an ostracized widow sleeping out the wretch of her reality to the seductive wreath of a mysterious man in her dreams is unaware of how real her fantasies are and the danger it beckons...Meanwhile, in the conclaves of supernal ramifications brews a cataclysm to end the reign of rebellious gods and their offspring, the demigods terrorizing their lesser counterparts: men. In addition, corrupted men wielding the whips of forbidden knowledge. This is was such a bittersweet read with great moral significance.

From the Author Author's Note       Most of the main characters in this novella are based on biblical history. The fictional character "Archael" is inspired by Genesis 3: 24; after the ostracism of the first parents out of Eden, cherubs were posted at the East entrance, and in their possession a flaming blade of a sword "to guard the way to the tree of life." By Mª Verónica In the “Ancient of Days: End of Perfection” obsession and guilty pleasures reaches dangerous heights posing the question: “how far will you go to grasp the dark desires of your heart?”At the founding of humankind, the “status quo” was challenged to spurn a rebel sovereignty, bringing an entailment of rebellious gods called Watchers (Fallen Stars), abandoning their celestial abode to run amuck amongst humankind.Among them, Archael, a Watcher unbecomingly finds himself enkindled with infatuation as he machinates to sate his desire...Potiphera, an ostracized widow sleeping out the wretch of her reality to the seductive wreath of a mysterious man in her dreams is unaware of how real her fantasies are and the danger it beckons...Meanwhile, in the conclaves of supernal ramifications brews a cataclysm to end the reign of rebellious gods and their offspring, the demigods terrorizing their lesser counterparts: men. In addition, corrupted men wielding the whips of forbidden knowledge. This is was such a bittersweet read with great moral significance.

After a whirlwind romance with the formidable Nora Brooks, together they forge a cattle town in the rugged landscape during the First World War. Nearly thirty years later, Marion Kidd Sanders journeys to New York in pursuit of fame and fortune—bringing the family name to new heights. An Outstanding Family Saga that Spans Nearly a Millennia By Marcha Fox As someone who has done some genealogical research I was totally enamored by this wonderful family saga that follows several generations of an Irish family named Sanders starting back in 1014 A.D. The characters and historical descriptions are impeccable and draw you into each era and the struggles of those particular times while also showing how human nature doesn’t change, that our needs for love and security have been the same for centuries. From 11th century Ireland to 18th century Boston and 20th century Texas and NYC, the settings are expertly rendered and plunge you into the culture of the day. Dizon’s dialog is always smooth and convincing, his ability to convey accents and personality always making you feel as if you are sitting in on the conversation. Exceptionally well-written, I continue to be amazed at the author’s ability to excel in every genre he pursues by adapting his style like a literary chameleon to the work at hand. No matter what genre is your favorite, rest assured that Dizon has tackled it at one time or another and it will be a good read.

By Fiction Author Rhoda D'Ettore From the opening deathbed scene of a grandfather sharing his last few moments with his grandson, this book captures the reader! Just in the first few chapters alone, we find heretics, Vikings, war, family pride, and superstition! A wonderful speech given by the king rallies his people together to fight, while opposing peoples fight to prevent being dominated by others. This author gives us a balance of dialogue, description, thought and action-- making this quite the entertaining read! He has a great way of producing real to life characters with such statements as, "“I could not care if he was in the Land of the Leprechauns, it would make me no less concerned over his well-being." Another line said something to the affect of "I'll cut out your eyes and feed them to my hog". Simply a great and entertaining read! There are no grammatical errors, the flow and style is quite entertaining which created another page turner by this author. Whether you enjoy action, historical, family sagas, this is the book for you!

This is an epic adventure that carries the reader back to Ireland and then through the generations as this family saga is brought to life. It is a pleasure and an honor to be able to into a family's past. Your heart aches with their sorrows and rises with their happiness. You forget that this story is a family you don't know. As you read this wonderful story you begin to feel you are a part of the family and as you come to know the characters you feel like you are fighting and struggling along with them. Thanks John for taking readers on this great and personal journey through the generations.

Ancient Roman sleuth Marcus Corvinus uncovers a treasonous plot in this witty and intriguing new mysteryNovember, AD 40. When a wealthy consul’s wife asks Corvinus to investigate the death of her uncle, killed by a block of falling masonry during renovations on his estate in the Vatican Hills, a sceptical Corvinus is inclined to agree with the general verdict of accidental death. But his investigations reveal clear evidence of foul play, as well as unearthing several skeletons among the closets of this well-to-do but highly dysfunctional family. Who could have wanted Lucius Surdinus dead? His vengeful ex-wife? His ambitious mistress? His disillusioned elder, or his estranged younger, son? Or does the key to the mystery lie in the dead man’s political past? But when Corvinus’s investigations draw him to the attention of the emperor, a dangerously unpredictable Caligula, his prospects of surviving long enough to solve the mystery look slim to say the least.

Wishart does do a good job of making it still have dramatic tension By ARG A few loose ends in this one, nothing dramatic just random pieces that bug me, but loose ends isnt really fair because they are in fact written off to luck or the spirits. Always difficult to read stories where the end is literally history and unmovable. Here we know that Caligula is killed by his guards leaving the games in the end and Claudius becomes emperor. Can't say the specific games or date was in my head but ending was obvious. Wishart does do a good job of making it still have dramatic tension. I will miss Caligula though he was a crazy mean man but he was always a fun interaction. As usual the plot is simple murder uncovers nasty pile of woe/treason and tada Marcus uncovers the lot at great personal danger. This though took that formula to new heights

Lesley As Marcus Corvinus would say, this book was easy-peasy to read and I absolutely enjoyed it from start to finish. This is my first excursion into the world of Corvinus and his lovely wife Perilla in the days of ancient Rome so coming across modern language usage in a novel set during Roman times was a slight bit startling at first. Once I settled into it, though, it seemed like the most natural thing in the world. Naevia Postuma has come to tell Corvinus that her uncle, Nevius Surdinus, did not die from an accident, but was in fact murdered. She knows this because her spirit control, Alexander the Great, was very emphatic in bringing it to her attention. Now she wants Marcus to get busy and find out who the murderer is and bring someone to justice. With Alexander pulling the strings from the ether, how can Corvinus possibly refuse this request? This was simply a fun book to read. The character of Marcus Valerius Corvinus is written so he never takes himself too seriously, especially if there is the chance of a cup of wine (good wine would be best, but any wine will do) and his wife Perilla to help him sort out the tangles of all the political intrigue swirling around Rome. Surely he hasn't just uncovered a treasonous plot to assassinate the Emperor, or has he? And who is the mysterious man who saved him from the three attackers that wanted him dead? This story has plots within plots and twists that come thick and fast. Just when I thought I was on the right track I found that the road went nowhere and I had to back up and start again. And I didn't even get upset with the author for leading me down that blind alley. Since reading this novel I've learned there are many others in the series and I'm very grateful for that. I'm certainly hoping they are all as easy-peasy and OTT as this one was. If you demand that your historical mysteries be perfect in every period detail, this one with its up-to-2014 modern language usage might not be for you. If, however, you want to have fun while reading a novel, you've come to the right book.I received an ARC of this novel through NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own.

Imperial business By travelswithadiplomat Marcus Corvinus is back for his fourteenth outing and this time he's tied up with the demise of Emperor Caligula. No spoilers there...it's a widely publicised historical fact. Ths time he's pulled into the sleuthing business by the forceful honey trap that is one Lady Naevia Postumia, whose ex-husband - Lucius Naevius Surdinus - didn't die from falling masonry quite as accidentally as the perpetrators would like to have Rome believe. At least, that's what her spirit guide, Alexander the Great no less, would have us believe. He might have a point because Marcus' subsequent reluctant investigations reveal a death that's tied into wider conspiracies at the very highest level. Of course, having established the death was a murder and produced a witness to the actual killer, Corvinus has to go find both motive and employer of the murderer. The family are good starting points what with the conniving Tarquitia, the young mistress of our dead ex-suffect consul who inherited a lot of property and money to the displeasure of Lucius Junior. Then there's the youngest son, Hellenus, who's estranged from his family and living as an "artist" in the slums of Rome. Add into the mix people like Gallio, the dead man's bailiff, Tarquitia's husband, Titus Otillius, a lawyer by the name of Venullius,All of this doesn't really provide any clarity for our sleuth and his usual adumbration with Perilla throws up more questions than answers. This means Corvinus has to examine further and finds himself investigating the political circles around Surdinus which leads him into the sphere of Cassius Longinus, just recalled to Rome by Caligula from his Asia governorship, the two Gaulish senators, stoical Julius Graecinus and oleaginous Anicius Cerialis, and one Valerius Asiaticus. Each of the four has an axe to grind with the Emperor, all of which leads our hero into a conspiracy theory that gets him beaten up, locked up, warned, and generally in a lot of 'furkling business' than's really good for him. As with all Wishart's novels, the immediate directions of thought, understanding, plot and action never lead us to the bigger picture until we are in the very depths of his book, so we stumble through alleys and tunnels of dimly lit ideas and concepts before emerging into the sunlight of the truth of what's really going on. Suffice it to say, this is a particularly satisfactory effort by both author and sleuth with a mystery that's confoundingly delightful to wade through. By the end satisfaction is guaranteed all round, especially as this is a novel where the nominal 'bad guys' seem to get away with everything in a manner that's...well....it's alright, to be honest. No sense of being cheated.Aside from the modern and irreverent vernacular like: "pukkah-sahib" or "pint of neat vinegar" that Marcus uses in these novels - something that normally has the historical purist in this reviewer spluttering into his coffee mug but chooses to be indulgent because Corvinus is a favourite read - there's a few typos that appear all too common these days since the advent of the e-book. For example, "communi-cation" "sena-torial quartet". There are some grammatical quirks: "bosky woodland" which is like saying 'red blood', the adjective describing the fixed noun. I liked the educational aspects in the novel. For example, a page or so explaining the word 'recension', time spent investigating the philosophy of Aristarchus, the etymology of 'phobos' and 'phobeisthai'.For all these minor quibbles and tiny footnotes of pleasure, I have to say that if you are a fan of Roman mystery novels - the likes written by Davis, Saylor, Roberts, Scott, Rowe et al. - then read the novels of David Wishart, especially his Marcus Corvinus series. They are a guilty pleasure on any day.

The Crescent's Edge is set in the small seaside community of Crescent City California. The plot is set in 1865, shortly after the Civil War and at the sinking of the steamer Brother Jonathan. The rowdy gold strike country becomes a challenge for Becca Cates who finds herself thrust into another time. The characters, like all of us, have faults and gifts, prejudices and compassion. Excitement, romance, conflict and humor bring them together in this very different story with a historical perspective.

Love the setting & switching between current day and the 1800's. The first person narratives of actually living during this time period and the historical fiction are interesting, captivating, and exceptional. It is a "can't put it down" type book with lots of action and curiosity about what will happen next. Love how the main character befriends Chinatown and Indians, which was unheard of in the 1800's. The book is exceptionally well written.

I started it and simply could not put it down! As a teacher and resident of Crecent City, I teach my students about the Brother Jonathan history. I was fascinated with the rich history in this truly wonderfully written historical fiction. I really connected with the characters and was sad to end it. I am awaiting for a sequel! A good book leaves a reader reflecting and pondering it long after, and this is just what I am doing after having finished it. I would recommend this book to anyone. You are in for a real treat!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Waiting for the sequel (hint, hint) By Pandorasecho I was a little uncertain about reading a book set in the town I've called home since 1989. The last novel I read set here in Crescent City, CA was infuriatingly wrong on a lot of little details, the kinds of things that you would only notice if you lived here. It was enough to make me really hate a perfectly good story that time, as I kept interrupting my reading to grumble, "you could find that on Google in under a minute!"When I realized the author lived in the area, and was willing to do the research, I became interested, and upon reading the description and finding out that a large portion of the story was based upon the fascinating wreck of the Brother Jonathan, which I have long been curious about, I knew I would have to give it a try.The Crescent's Edge is a long read for someone like me, who usually writes and teaches books in the middle and high school grade levels. But every word of this novel was enjoyable and after 640 pages I found myself hoping for a sequel. The book spans two timelines and involves a bit of confusion as all the author reference to two of the main characters use their names, but the friends and contemporaries address them by each other's names. It isn't as confusing as it sounds however, and works. Think of the old Disney, "Freaky Friday" stories and you will understand the body switch which happens here. It is a strange concept but believably explained in the world of the story and a lovely way to visit both the old era Crescent City, and the current era.The real strength of this book is in the setting and characters being handled in a way that makes them feel real. You see the disturbing history and the contrasting fact that the same people who show such empathy to the shipwreck survivors and to the families of the dead, are the same people who live and accept such very unempathetic things as legally being able to hunt "Indians" and dumping some bodies in a mass grave on unhallowed ground if they couldn't be proven to be Christian. You see the segregation of the Chinese to a limited section of town and the cruelty of dog fighting. There are a lot of real life issues covered inside this charming, time tangled fantasy, but it never comes off as preachy or judgmental. The book is also filled with fascinating quotes and has an interesting bibliography if you are interested in exploring the history more yourself. If you want a good read with a bit of education as a side order then this fits the bill. I really recommend it highly.
