Vicarish By Daniel Myers This book is a curiosity about a curiosity: Robert Stephen Hawker, Vicar of Morwenstow (on the Cornish coast) and lifelong eccentric. Sabine Baring-Gould, the author, was almost no less an eccentric. But that's by the by. The book is written in a style I should call 19th Century "Vicarish" - to coin a term - with a knowledge of Ancient Greek coming in rather handy I should say.The book, as the author admits at one point, mainly consists of "gossip," that is, anecdotes that may be true only in part, if at all. But still, for those who fancy such things, it is engaging all the same. Here, for the prospective reader to savour, is a typical anecdote of Vicar Hawker's eccentricity:"He was usually followed to church by nine or ten cats, which entered the chancel with him, and careered about it during service. Whilst saying prayers Mr. Hawker would pat his cats, or scratch them under their chins. Originally ten cats accompanied him to church; but one, having caught, killed, and eaten a mouse on a Sunday, was excommunicated, and from that day was not allowed again into the sanctuary."Nevertheless, for all his drollery, Stephen Hawker was essentially a lonely man whose parishioners were largely illiterate, oppressed peasants accustomed to eking out a living by "wrecking" or plundering from the ships that foundered on the rugged, stormy Cornish coast. As Baring-Gould puts it:"There was a sad undertone in Mr. Hawker's character. He felt his isolation in mind from all around him. His best companions were the waves and the clouds. He lived `the ever alone,' as he calls himself in one of his letters, solitary in the Morwenstow ark, with only the sound of waters about him. `The Lord shut him in.' "The fascination of the book for me was in its transporting the reader to another century and a somewhat alien mindset. If you like to read odd yet erudite tales of rum characters, then you could do far worse than this short, scrumptious biography.
