By Angelina Lisitskaya If you want to improve your communication skills, then read this book.I especially liked the first chapter as the basic skill that I first planned to improve is the ability to say exactly what I mean. And always wanted to learn the art of persuasion (Theo tells about it in detail). The book is easy to read and reveals key moments of dialogue that are so important for successful communication.I work in the client's business, so effective communication skills are important to me. I plan to make this Bible my reference book!

By Samantha Roberts Communication skill is one of the most important skill a person must posses in order to survive and thrive in the today's world. Communication skills plays an important role in our life. We need this skill in every aspect of life, from our relationship, career, networking and meeting new people. Without this how can we communicate with others, how do we run our business?, how can we communicate with our clients and employees. Let us all remember that communication doesn't only focus on the verbal side but also the body language. One of the key points in making a good conversation is to look in the person's eye while communicating with them. As what they always say "The eyes is the windows to your soul". This book is a complete guide on how to communicate well with others and how to be a good listener. The Author briefly explained the 6 basic expressions and the levels of facial expressions. I highly recommend this book for people who wants to enhance their communication skills.

I bought this thinking it was one of your other typical social skill helping books out there. This book give some tips on spreading influence and getting words to come out when talking groups of people. It gives also ideas to help radically change us how to approach public speaking and how to succeed at any speech. I liked the fact that this book showed the basic strategies for creating strong communication skills. This book has improved my communication a lot, in the business life and outside that. I have improved a lot and I am very glad where I’m at right now after i have learned all this and implemented it in my life. I would recommend this book strong and everyone should get it.

Okay, a real quick note here: I didn’t plan on reviewing this until later—I have other books I’m supposed to be reading—but I just couldn’t stay away. I’m a binge reader, so I just had to read Hell Bent.Halo—a quaint, rural Missouri town—is an absolutely great place to be … unless, of course, you’re a human. For the fallen angels, vampires, werebeasts, and a whole slew of other walking horrors, Halo has become a sort of sanctuary, a preserve where the nightmares reign supreme with little interference from the larger American government. Life isn’t so great for humans, though, who fall somewhere between being second-class citizens and straight up chattel: pimped out, bled dry, and forced to slave away for their non-people (NP) protectors or suffer terrible consequences. And the only people who might be able to save the day? The Whitney family … well, what remains of the Whitney family. Colt and Tough, a couple of alcoholic, redneck brothers with a family history as dark as they come. If these two boys are God’s chosen warriors, then it might just be time for humanity to bow out of the fight. The MC: So Hell Bent—the awesome follow up to Halo Bound—is split between four primary POVs this go ’round: Colt, Tough, Desty (short for Modesty), and Tiffany (a world-weary vampire, who doubles as a baker and a rabid X-Files fan).Halo Bound was focused primarily on Tough—a wild, rock ‘n roll kid with a bad past and an even worse future in store for him—and Desty, the awkward teenager on a mission to find and rescue her twin sister, Tempie. The first book does a lot of world building and revolves around Tough and Desty as they make their way through the world of Halo and discover a budding, yet tragic, relationship together.Book two, Hell Bent, shifts away from Tough and Desty (though they are still present) and instead gives us a more detailed glimpse into the lives, and minds, of Colt—Toughs older brother and the “Chosen Warrior of God”—and his, well … girlfriend, might not be the right word … but something along those lines, Tiffany. The relationship that unfolds between these two is as touching as it is heartbreaking—a dark and painful connection between two troubled, social misfits. The World: I loved being back in Halo. This world is well developed and highly unique, though quite deranged in many ways. In Halo, fallen angels, werebeasts, vampires, sirens, zombies, and all other manner of freaky-deaky things exist, and they exist right out in the open, thanks to the unceasing efforts of Halo’s Mayor, Kathan Dark. Things didn’t always used to be that way, but after the Whitney family discovered the existence of these dark creatures and started waging a holy war against the fallen angels, the situation drastically shifted. Now, non-people run the show and human beings are relegated to doing what they’re told. Each human is assigned to a NP, who in turn serves as their protector in exchange for certain benefits, like blood, or manual labor, or sex. All and all, it’s a pretty disturbing vision. The Story and Writing: This book was just as dark and disturbing as the first one—maybe more so—with the same heavy elements that made me squirm in my seat the first time. There is sex and sadism, slavery and brokenness, rape, violence, death, insanity, and horrific murder. There is so much brokenness in the lives of these character that, at times, it feels like a hopeless cause; you want these character to succeed, you want to root for them, and you want them to win the day. And you know, deep down, that they probably won’t. That redemption might not be in the cards, that the bad guys might, in fact, triumph, and that only bad choices and even worse consequences are possible. It’s dark, heavy, and grim. But, with that all said, I enjoyed this book even more than the first. Since much of the world building was established in the first book, this book had a more plot-focused narrative, which I enjoyed. There is also a wonderful subversion of the typical “Chosen One Prophecy,” which really caught me off guard, and let’s not forget the writing … I am continually blown away by eden Hudson’s writing. Her narrative voice is spectacular—evocative, polished, and just plain knock-your-socks-off good. If you aren’t afraid of the dark, this is one helluva good read.See all my reviews at: www.JamesAHunter.wordpress.com

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Hell yes. By LTV & TM Another hell ride. More laughs. More sex. More violence. More twists that stab you in the heart and keep turning the blade. This is pretty much everything you could want out of a sequel to Halo Bound. The Whitney family saga continues. Most of the main players from the first book are back, though Colt and Tiffani take center stage more than last time. Colt and Tiffani are a little more serious and reserved than Tough and Desty, the sort of stars of the first book. Though there's still plenty of humor in the C & T chapters, this book comes off a little more sincere and almost touches a solemn spot at times. It makes for an awesome contrast from all of the dramatic and exciting moments. It's hard to comment much here without spoiling, but out of everything going on, I really can't wait to see what happens to Colt and Tiffani next.As for the aforementioned characters that seemed to form the heart of Halo Bound: Tough's mask of cockiness and humor is barely (or rarely) concealing the tragic figure underneath now, but maybe there's a still a glimmer of redemption on the horizon for him... or something like redemption, at least. Desty seems to have gained some form of confidence, and I realized that I like her quite a bit more than I thought, but her current course of actions is making me nervous as hell.Maybe that's one of the best compliments I can give here: I do think about these characters as real people. I forget that I'm reading a book and go, "NO! IDIOT! DON'T DO THAT!" or "Yikes. Not good. Hope this works out somehow." Lots of stuff like that. This one pretty much starts out at a dead sprint and speeds up from there. There's a lot of story packed into a few pages. The action is pretty much non-stop. Excitement and stimulation abound, but I think what makes it all work is the way the characters feel just complex enough, just flawed enough to keep their grip on our hearts. To me, each of the characters has a truly tragic flaw. Something that makes them repeatedly choose a life path that often hurts them and humiliates them; a path of despair where redemption often looks impossible but they keep grasping after it anyway. As far as stories with tragic streaks go, the best of them hurt in a way that somehow makes you feel less alone. Hell Bent did that for me.I want more, of course. More, more, more.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Hell Bent on finishing this book By Cool Auntie J My goodness, what a ride! This book kicked in right where the first ended and never let up. It is gritty. It is in your face. And it is fantastic. Ever wondered what the end of the world would look like? Just turn the page. This book has it all, characters you that love and inspire you, and characters you hate and wish you could actually hit in the face, with a chair. Most of all, I think this book is about never giving up, no matter what. You dig in, plant your feet and keep swinging. I loved it, and I need the next one now, please.

It was well-written and takes you back in time to the Middle Ages - a period of history I have always loved to read about. There is no "modernisation" in this tale - it is pure historical novel Gold. If you read books like 'The Pillars of the Earth', you will like this novel even better. It is an historical romance set in the Middle Ages, depicting the life of a young bride who does her duty to her family, then tries to move towards a life of her own choosing. What if you got that 'second-chance' shot at the love of your life? Would it be the right choice? Do you cross your fingers and hope for the best? Read the book and find out if true love wins in a startlingly realistic jolly olde England. I am RegentX, and I endorse this book (fingers crossed and hoping the author will make a few more like them).

Last Thursday I awoke to learn that I died almost a month ago. I was rebuilt from a highly experimental process of clockwork and cloning, and I don’t know why. One man knows my secret—my creator, the lead of the Leona Scientific Laboratory. He says knowledge isn’t free. I say that unless I know why I’m here, he’s the one who’s going to pay. My friend Jack Beasley has offered his help. He has inside knowledge about the laboratory and the man who runs it. I think he also knows something about me that he isn’t sharing. There’s no one I can trust now. Not even myself.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. `You're dead, Ada. You're not real.' By Grady Harp Maine author Amanda Clemmer gained her degree in English Literature and Writing from University of Northwestern in Saint Paul, MN and trained for her novel debut as a freelance writer and as managing editor at Comic Booked: she has had shorter works published the literary journal Snow Monkey and JukePop Serials. Having traveled around the world as a missionary kid she has observed many cultures, myths, and experiences and somehow has sewn this background together to create imaginary universes and has a passion for fantasy and science fiction. Her first book was MOSTLY HUMAN and now she presents her second novel, AUTOMATON. She is also a musician, the violin being her instrument.Amanda has that gift of pulling the reader into her fantasy by offering a few pungent paragraphs a novel's opening: `I'm awake, but my eyes are closed. Around me are the familiar curves of the couch in the library basement. The sanitized odor of scientific equipment reaches my nose more pungent than I remember. I am stiff, locked into position. After measuring a few breaths, I open my eyes to the sight of my friend Jack Beasley's secret laboratory. This room has been my second home for years, ever since I first met the aspiring scientist when I was a schoolgirl at the Los Angeles Academy for Young Women. Jack is here too. In my face. He's leaning over me and gawking through his multi-layered scientific glasses as if expecting me to sprout horns.' And then as Jack proceeds, `"Don't go," he says. "You can't go." He wants to tell me something. "Why not?" I ask. I'm starting to hope he can give me a good enough reason. When I pause, my limbs lock in place like cogs from an old clock. Jack removes his glasses, and for the first time I recognize the concern in his eyes. "Ada, there's something I need to tell you before you leave this place." "What?" I ask. My stomach is queasy now. I want to return to the couch. I glance around the room and study the equipment on the work desk. "Were you experimenting on me?" "You might want to sit down," says Jack...."You are not Ada Stirling," he blurts. I slit my eyes open to steal a glance at him. He's staring at me as he speaks, but doesn't notice my gaze. "Ada Stirling-- well-- she died in a tragic and unforeseen accident a few weeks ago, and I was commissioned to, well, rebuild her," explains Jack. "Using cloning technology and advanced clockwork. Damn. That sounds almost as bad as it is..."You're dead, Ada. You're not real. You're just a series of memories and algorithms programmed into an automaton that is covered with cloned skin and hair. And fingernails," says Jack. "I don't know how else to put it, Ada. You're a walking ghost, and I just created you. Damn, I'm horrible!"To quickly summarize this strange tale, the plot synopsis guides: `Last Thursday I awoke to learn that I died almost a month ago. I was rebuilt from a highly experimental process of clockwork and cloning, and I don't know why. One man knows my secret--my creator, the lead of the Leona Scientific Laboratory. He says knowledge isn't free. I say that unless I know why I'm here, he's the one who's going to pay. My friend Jack Beasley has offered his help. He has inside knowledge about the laboratory and the man who runs it. I think he also knows something about me that he isn't sharing. There's no one I can trust now. Not even myself.'Where and how Amanda takes us from this every solid opening is the pleasure of discovering a new author with a unique voice. This novel/novella is brief but so well conceived and constructed that it seems sure to be the beginning of a new series and a new important career. Grady Harp, May 15

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I never felt connected By Christina @ Books and Prejudice This looked really neat to me. I love science fiction. And the idea of bringing someone back from the dead as basically a robot? Pretty amazing right there.I took some issues with how this novella was executed. When Ada first woke up as an automaton, I felt she accepted that fact far too quickly. Sure there's plenty of proof, but if she is emotionally the same as a human, shouldn't it affect her quite a lot? I mean, if you found out that you're not really human, what would you do? With that, I had a lot of trouble connecting with the main character. With most of the characters really. I liked Ada/Ace's friend Jack the most. But he had a small part. Maybe if this were longer the characters could have developed more.I also want to know how Ada died. Was that plot just dropped? Or was the "it was an accident" really the full explanation? Because Ada/Ace insists she wouldn't trip down the stairs. So how did she really die? Even if it was an accident, what really happened?Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended By S. Gregory The tale of a young woman who is replaced by a machine after an 'accident.' A well depicted steampunk mystery with some great characters. Highly recommended.

His mother was one of the most powerful wizards in the Nurian Empire until she abandoned her people to become a notorious pirate. That choice doomed the family she left behind to a life of disgrace. Yanko White Fox doesn’t remember his mother, but as the only gifted child in the family, he is expected to erase the mark she left on them all. With an affinity for earth magic and communicating with animals, he’s not the most natural candidate to become a warrior mage, but it’s the only sure route back into the Great Chief’s good graces. He has resigned himself to training for that destiny, whether it matches his passions or not. Long before he’s ready for his first battle, insurrection comes to his distant corner of the empire. Rebels take over the salt mine his family manages and slay the only relative who ever supported Yanko. On the heels of the tragedy, a courier brings a message from the Great Chief’s son. Whether he is prepared or not, Yanko must undertake a quest, one that could save millions of lives… or fail utterly, leaving him dead, his family forgotten, and his people the victims of starvation and endless war.

Good first book in a new series By maple I have read almost everything Lindsay Buroker has written, and I was grateful to receive a copy of her latest book (this one) in exchange for an honest review. In general, the things I like most about Buroker's novel are humorous dialog, interesting and quirky characters, strong female leads, and a nice balance between epic fantasy and character development. While this book did contain many of those elements (humor, adventure, and unique characters), I was not as captivated by the story or characters as in some of her other books.Yanko, the main character, is trying to redeem himself and his family by training to become a great mage after some personal and familial (his war hero mother became a feared pirate) disgraces. After his ancestral home and village are destroyed, he sets off on a quest at the behest of a prince to find new lands for his people to settle since the fertility of his country continues to decline after centuries of exploitation to support the population. Unknown adversaries try to stop him at every stage, but he perseveres with the help of his friends (or maybe just travel companions?) Dak and Lakeo. Yanko has to get creative about learning and using his magic. Especially since his strengths are earth magics, which are less obviously useful in a quest around the globe that requires thwarting people (including other mages) who want to kill him.I found Yanko to be less likable than I expected. He is convincing as an insecure and confused adolescent, but I didn't particularly enjoy his insecurities, inconsistencies, and occasional arrogance, even if they were realistic. I will continue to read other books in the series and hope that Yanko does eventually come of age and become a bit less annoying. I did enjoy most of the side characters, and I loved the inclusion of cameos by folks from the Emporer's Edge series.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Magic & Mayhem By Cheryl Fernandez When Lindsay Buroker offered me the chance to review Warrior Mage, the first book in the Chains of Honour series I was of course delighted. Who in their right mind would say no to a good read, especially when it doesn't cost you anything (well except for an honest review). Anyway, I was happy to oblige as I love and own all her books, so it wasn't a hardship by any means.Warrior Mage is a return to the Sword & Salt tales and Emperor's Edge territory, (one of my favourite places since it contains such people as Sicarius, Amaranth, Moldynado and the rest of the delightful rogues). However this series continues the story of Yanko the young Nurian wannabe Mage. The new series picks up Yanko's story after the six months of "toughening" down the salt mine. We follow his heroic efforts to try and win a place with the famed Nurian Warrior Mage Academy and his heartfelt endeavours to complete the mission set by Prince Zirabo, which result in some magical escapades and some dire confrontations with a Mage Hunter. At this point I suppose a lot of reviewers would give you a blow by blow account of the story, but since I'm sure you would rather read Lindsay's story than my synopis, I'm just going to say that it contains all the necessary elements to make it a thumping good read; swashbuckling heroes/heroines, magic, romance, humour and Lindsay's own special brand of wit. Lindsay is a master at world building and excellent characterisations and she continues this in Warrior Mage. The return of Dak (The Republic) and Akstyr (EE series) just add to the enjoyment and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Can't wait for Book 2.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. So Satisfying and we yearn for the next..... By Kat Cameron I received this book for an honest review. And then I bought it b/c I wanted that AWESOME cover art!!I have to start by saying this is my first review and Ms Buroker sent me the book because I begged. I begged because I have greatly enjoyed everything she has written. Plots are tight, characters are interesting, and emotions get involved. I can't wait to see how it all turns out and how they get out of the tight spots the characters find themselves in.This is definitely a stand alone book but if this is your first LB book I would suggest you go back and read the Swords & Salt Collection. This is where we first meet the main characters of Yanko, Dak, and Lakeo as well as a constellation of others. Akstyr, from Emperor's Edge series, even makes a brief appearance. Which brings me to another suggestion: if you really want to get into this world (and it's worth it) start with the Emperor's Edge Series. In this story Yanko is a young man, fleeing tragedy and on a "Mission" from his friend Prince Zarabo. Yanko is the titled Warrior Mage but his mad skilz as a warrior are a little unconventional; not much appreciated by him or the society he comes from. Dak is the mysterious Turgonian (historical enemies of Yanko's people) who is friend, tormentor, and bodyguard among other things. Lakeo is their companion and another bodyguard. She is also a Mage but very much in process. Their repartee is some of the best parts of the book. There are lots of questions in this story to accompany the action which is non-stop. Who is attacking? Who is a friend? Who is an enemy? What are Dak's motives? Is what they are seeking even real? The book ends on a bit of a cliff hanger so let's hope the next book comes soon!!!All in all a very satisfying read and a very nice cover. Worth the wait!!! Come on, LB, get the next one done!!!!

The Alzheimer's Guidebook by Sherri Largent, R.N. Alzheimer's/Dementia is out there in our world and creating distress and sadness in the lives of millions of people every day...and more in years to come. It's talked about in the news, on the radio, television shows and in our homes. The numbers of those who have already been diagnosed with this disease are staggering... MILLIONS!!! And who is going to be taking care of these people? If it is not the family, it is hired caregivers at home, or staff in a facility for Alzheimer's/Dementia. ARE THEY PREPARED? HAVE THEY BEEN TAUGHT AND KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT? Will they respond to situations with compassion and understanding while maintaining the patient's dignity as well as his/her care? And what happens when an Alzheimer patient needs to go to the hospital. Are staff knowledgeable in the care of these patients? These are important questions! Families try their hardest to deal with their loved one who has this disease, and it is frustrating, stressful and heartbreaking. Alzheimer's not only affects the patient and the family, but it affects friends of the family, also. Most have not been taught what to expect or how to properly care for them to make things easier. Many facilities hire staff who have never worked with Alzheimer's patients and the results are poor care for the patient, as well as increased stress, worry, and ill feelings for the family and friends. I was fortunate enough to have worked in a facility that was well-knowledged in the realm of Alzheimer's. As a Registered Nurse, working for hospice, I had the opportunity of managing the care of Alzheimer/Dementia patients for over nine years (on a daily basis) in all aspects of their disease process. I shared in the lives of their families. I watched, learned and listened...and took notes. From those notes, I comprised my guidebook. It is based upon actual stories told, factual information shared and put together with tips, scenarios, medic

The book is a "must-have" for anyway who has a family member or friend with alzheimers. The author takes you into the everyday life of alzheimers, what to expect of the disease, and how best to deal with the disease. It took me just about 2 hours to read the book; and I am so glad that I did. Two thumbs up to the writer!! Awesome book!

Helped me to realize so many different scenarios which I would not of even thought of. Very well written and easy to read.

By Amazon Customer Im a CNA who worked in memory care (alz-dementia care) for almost five years. this book was really easy to read and it describes exactly how it is when you are with people who have had or just getting into problems that arise when dealing with people that have these problems, I found myself remembering almost the exact same scenarios described in this book and it helps to understand some of the things that go on in dealing and living with alzheimers. I see this book helping to understand a little better what is going on and how maybe others view themselves.it is a great book that can be read fairly quickly and u will learn a lot. it is a truly heartfelt book written by someone u can tell truly cares and has been there and learned and passing the stuff learned as simply as possible

Fun projects for the intermediate programmer By Jamesarr This book is a good introduction to how programs can be written in Ruby employing gems and external libraries. I concur with Victor Blake’s review about the experience being more entertaining than educational; however you will gain some practical knowledge by building the games. From there you can stretch out by modifying the games and creating alternative variations. Also agree that this book is not for people brand-new to programming. Follow Victor’s advice about some other intro to programming resources before tackling this text. For these with some experience with moderate Ruby/Python etc… experience: 4 starsFor the complete novice to programming: Not recommended.

Practical and fun beginners guide to 2D game programming By Amazon Customer Learn Game Programming with Ruby is an introductory book to 2D game programming for beginners. It is based on the Ruby programming language and makes use of the Gosu 2D game development library and the Chipmunk physics library. Readers are assumed to have basic programming skills in Ruby as there is no tutorial. The book guides the readers through the process of writing four very different games, which cover many aspects of basic game programming that may be extended or pieced together as the basis for more complex games. The book first guides the reader to download and set up their Ruby development kit and libraries. From then on, it shows the readers how to write their first game, expand it, and then writing more but very different games as a way to show different techniques in game programming. The complete source code for the four games can be downloaded from the publisher's website. The last part of the book shows the readers how to package their game for sharing. The book is divided into the following main chapters, which should give you an idea of what the book is about.1. Introduction2. Get Ready3. Creating Your First Game4. Creating a Sprite-Based Game5. Managing Lots of Sprites6. Adding Scenes and Sounds7. Creating a Puzzle Game8. Making a Platformer Game with Physics9. Making a Side-Scrolling Game10. Package and Share Your GameThe book is well written and fun to follow. It is suitable for beginners who want to learn 2D game programming. Ruby is one of the easier languages to learn, so readers can focus on how to write games instead. All in all, this book is a great and fun way to learn 2D game programming.

Mocarski I got this book because I couldnt sleep and wanted to waste some time on a book that didnt require a lot of thought. It served that purpose reasonably well. Amazon likes to offend me with its recommendations, but this one was free with kindle unlimited, so I gave it a shot. This book appears to be a compilation of essays written by people who briefly read forums on prepping. It sits somewhere just below useful and just above ironically entertaining. In fairness, I've not read the whole book so perhaps it becomes useful or wonderfully terrible at some point.

Hundreds of years in the future, when 3D printers provide every luxury we could desire, from food to clothing, entertainment, and beyond, when androids perform what little labor is left necessary in the resulting boon, and when we have no more need for cars, taking electric elevators wherever we want to go, whether it be upstairs, across the country, or to another world, humankind will be living in a utopia, right?   Ask Ansel, a resident of Outland 6, the poorest world of Inland. When a "protector"--clad in white plated armor and cargo pants and wearing a screaming facemask that glows neon with every word--allegedly kills her parents, she sets out to find them.   As Ansel's world intertwines with that of the protectors, her actions set in motion the destruction of the walls of ignorance between all the worlds of Inland, forcing seven people--Ansel, the "protector", a servant, a black cat, an actor, an assembly line worker, and a scientist, each previously oblivious of the others' existence--to come to terms with worlds they thought long dead to history or impossible for centuries to come.   The Asymptote's Tail, an epic science fiction novel and the first in the four-part Infinite Limits series, tells their story. Are you ready to learn the truth it holds?

The Asymptote's Tail (Infinite Limits) (Volume 1), by Bryan Perkins

Review "This is the first novel by Perkins and it shows a great deal of promise for what proves to be not only a really great story thus far, but shot through with radical politics... I, for one, look forward to the sequels."   -Doug Greene, The Red History Lecture Series "The Asymptote's Tail is the beginning of a very promising sci-fi epic that you'll not want to miss."   -Michael Adkins, Nerds on Earth

From the Author I wrote this novel as a challenge to myself. I had been reading the Song of Ice and Fire series and Casual Vacancy--two seemingly unconnected stories, perhaps--around the same time, and what I found myself most impressed with, which was lacking in all my attempts at writing a novel thus far, was both authors' ability to juggle such a large cast of believable, well-rounded characters.   Keeping that in mind, in November of 2013, I started the first draft of what was then called Outland, hoping to come up with a hefty cast of fleshed out characters of my own making. My first attempts were bumbling and undirected. Unable to find the story because the only things I knew I wanted were an expansive character list, a story full of political intrigue, and a unique futuristic science fiction setting, I discarded those attempts and set to building the world properly while the story composted in my brain.   I studied and restudied story structures all the way from the basic three act, to Campbell's monomyth, to Harmon's (Dan Harmon of Community fame) circular story structure, eating up every bit of theory I could, and as I did, I came across a transcription of an interview with China Miéville--whose work I still have yet to read, I'm afraid--in which he gave some advice to new writers trying to get started. Among other things he said:   "Think three-act structure, you know. Think rising action at the beginning of the journey and then some sort of cliff-hanger at the end of act one. Continuing up to the end of act two, followed by a big crisis at the end of act three, followed by a little dénouement. Think 30,000 words, 40,000 words, 30,000 words, so what's that, around 100,000 words. Divide that up into 5,000 word chapters so you're going 6/8/6. I realise this sounds incredibly sort of drab, and kind of mechanical. But my feeling is that the more you can kind of formalise and bureaucratise those aspects of [your novel's structure]. It actually paradoxically liberates you creatively because you don't need to worry about that stuff."   And I took that advice to heart. So I came up with seven characters, each with seven different backgrounds and seven different perspectives of the future world I had created, and I decided that each character would get three 5,000 word chapters from their point of view, adding up to a little more than the 20 suggested by Miéville but something that could be made to work along the same lines.   And as I started to write, I did feel liberated creatively. I could see all the characters' timelines intertwining as I went, and though I'm sure I didn't perform up to the standards of the legends I was trying to emulate, I feel like I've created something I can be proud of, and I'm certain I'll continue to improve as I write more novels in the future.   So if you're a fan of the political intrigue and cast size in works like Game of Thrones and Casual Vacancy, or if you're into classic dystopian science fiction like The Handmaid's Tale, 1984, Brave New World, and Fahrenheit 451, or even if you're into absurdism of the likes of Tom Stoppard and Albert Camus, think about giving The Asymptote's Tail a read. I believe the cast will become your friends, the decisions they're forced to make will give you philosophical contradictions to mull over long after reading, and most of all, you'll enjoy yourself.   Thanks for giving me a read, I hope you'll join me in the future.   -Bryan "with a Y" Perkins 06/04/15

From the Back Cover Far into our future humankind controls the fabric of reality with such ease that "here" and "there" have become one. Space is bent such that many separate worlds exist, most in complete ignorance of the others. The Asymptote's Tail begins the story of the interactions between seven of those worlds.    In one, a servant imagines life with no master and learns if she can withstand the risks that come with freedom. In another, a young girl is forced into freedom of another kind when her parents disappear and she sets out to find them.    An actor learns how much work is done by who in which worlds and decides what he wants to do about it, a black cat tries to decipher the ways of humankind and protect his owner as she does the same, an assembly line worker seeks revenge for the death of her son, a police officer learns what the job entails and decides if he can stay on the force, and a scientist vies to regain control over her inventions which are being used to wreak havoc on all the worlds of Outland.   As each new perspective illuminates experiences from the old, the Sisyphean nature of chasing an endless limit and the totality of contradictions inherent in a divided system become clear. "Then" and "now" take on as little difference as "here" and "there", for in the end, we are all, everywhere, and forever chasing The Asymptote's Tail.  The Asymptote's Tail is an epic science fiction novel and the first in the four-part Infinite Limits series.

Greene One of my facebook friends, Bryan Perkins, was kind enough to send me a copy of his new science fiction novel "The Asymptote’s Tail" for review recently. I finished late last night and I wanted to share a few thoughts on the book."The Asymptote’s Tail" is the first of a planned four books in the Infinite Limits series. The story takes place in the future when humanity seemingly can provide for its needs through 3D printers and is able to bend the very fabric of space itself. In this future, space is bent in such a way that seven worlds exist, most of them ignorant of each other. The perspectives and interactions of those worlds are told through seven characters: a servant, a young girl, an actor, a cat (yes a cat), a police officer, an assembly line worker and a scientist. The work is successfully able to mix life-like characters, storytelling and radical politics in a manner that is not dogmatic or stale. The fictional world, its politics, class structure is developed throughout the work. Those of you who love fantasy world building such as found in Game of Thrones will be intrigued. The themes of the book raise a number of questions that are very contemporary. What happens when humanity's productive powers have gotten out of control of their makers? What is a "good cop" to do in a system that values property more than human lives? What can those with "privilege" do in the struggle for a better world - are we bought off? And what do we do when can pierce through the veils that prevent us from seeing how the system operates? What choices then confront us?I don't want to give away too much of the plot here, since I would recommend that everyone pick up a copy of "The Asymptote’s Tail." This is the first novel by Perkins and it shows a great deal of promise for what proves to be not only a really great story thus far, but shot through with radical politics. For science fiction fans, here is a new author to engage with. Although even if you are not politically radical at all or even interested in science fiction, it is worth reading just for the story and the characters.I, for one, look forward to the sequels. Thanks again Bryan for letting me read a copy.

AMAZING NEW SERIES FROM BRYAN PERKINS By John Vargin Bryan Perkins has crafted the first volume of what looks to be one of the most engaging series I've read in a great while! The Asymptote's Tail is a must read for anyone who enjoys finely honed dialogue, dynamic world-building, and complex, yet relatable characters. Told from multiple character perspectives, you get fully realized protagonists & and a universe that is completely unique and innovative.Highly recommend series and a new author to keep you eyes on!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is far from the worst book I've ever read By Nom de Internet (I got this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This will all be crossposted to /r/reviewcircle, amazon and goodreads. And perhaps a blog sometime in the future as I've been considering starting a sci-fi book blog. But I digress.)The Asymptote's Tail by Bryan Perkins - 2 1/2 stars / 5In the future, it's common knowledge that everything you could want appears magically from 3D printers, and robots take care of the rest. Unless you scratch a little below the surface and catch a glimpse of the truth. A variety of characters - human and non- end up more or less united in a quest to upend the status quo. This is far from the worst book I've ever read. At no point did I ever want to stop reading it - the pacing is good, the concept itself is interesting, and many of the characters are compelling. I particularly enjoyed the adventures of Mr. Kitty - his movements and thoughts felt genuinely catlike and it was easy to picture a cat behaving the way he behaved. There are a few issues, though.-The first, and the simplest to fix: copy editing. This book needs a polishing from a proofreader with a red pen. Its that should be it's, to/too switches, punctuation that's missing or misplaced- they're like potholes in the road. Not enough to stop you going forward, but enough to give you a jostle and make you lose focus for a second.-Dialogue. 99 percent of the instances of "dear" and "sweetheart" could be stricken completely, and nothing important would be lost. Also, every so often a phrase would pop up that simply didn't jive. "All the hottest celebs are going there" - no one talks like that. And one specifically I must mention- a literal fat captain of industry wearing a fedora who gropes Haley and calls her "m'lady"? No no no no no no no. Reddit cliches have to stay on reddit. Took me right out of the story. There are better ways to get a point across.-Geography. I never really had a sense of place while reading this book. How big are the Outlands? How big is Inland? Where are they exactly, relative to one another, and what prevents travel between them? The elevators won't go to certain places, yes, but surely there must be people on the borders - what stops them from simply walking from one to the other?- There are some plot points I'm not sure I understand. I feel like certain key things were glossed over where we could really have used more details. (I'll try not to get too spoiler-y here but you can skip the rest of this paragraph if you don't want to risk it.) The Walker-Haley fields, for instance. How exactly are these supposed to work? Are they like wormholes? If so, why are the elevators necessary? And the robots that the scientist dispatches to repair things - what is it they're repairing? The 3D printers themselves- the way people believe they work makes them seem more like star trek replicators than printers, and of course the way they actually work is something else entirely. But if they're just doorways, not actually printing anything, then why does the model of printer matter? The scientist expounds on how the "best" printers are in Inland and the models get older and fewer between as you go further into Outland, but if they're not actually doing anything, what's the difference? What exactly is the government like? Is it just the Protectors and the rich people who control them? What exactly is the history between the scientist and Lord Walker? There are more things, but I don't want to go on and on. It just seems like a further explanation of some things would have really made the plot and the motivation of the characters clearer. To sum up: This was a very interesting concept that would benefit enormously from a good editor. If you're not someone who minds rough edges, it might be worth a read.
