The place: Detroit. The time: World War II.

While most of the police department is fighting overseas, the four men of the Racket Squad struggle to keep a lid on a powderkeg stuffed with draft-dodging troublemakers, Black Market gangsters, enemy saboteurs, and a mixed bag of racial and ethnic groups working uneasily side by side in defense plants run by the automobile industry.

With blackjacks, brass knuckles, tommy guns, and their bare fists, Lieutenant Max Zagreb, Sergeant Starvo Canal, and detectives McReary and Burke--known collectively as the "Four Horsemen"--battle their way through ten gritty stories in the hardest-boiled town during the twentieth century's hardest-boiled decade.

"[Estleman's] precise ear for dialogue is on display with the snappy, sarcastic banter between the Squad and the other characters that is reminiscent of a Howard Hawks movie. This is a 'must have' for the legion of Estleman readers, fans of the period or simply admirers of well-written short stories. And another excellent, note-worthy addition to Estleman's many and varied contributions to crime fiction." --Bookgasm.com

A trip to the rough-and-tumble past By Graham Powell DETROIT IS OUR BEAT is a collection of short stories featuring the Four Horsement, four detectives from the Rackets Squad who serve and protect the city while most of the able-bodies men are off fighting the Axis in WWII. First introduced in the novel JITTERBUG, these four roughnecks with badges are not afraid to use their fists, their guns, and if those don't work, their brains. In addition to the mystery and action, there's plenty of humor here, mostly in the banter between the men: Lt. Zagreb, the boss; Sergeant Canal, big as a bull and twice as tough; Officer Burke, who looks big standing next to anyone but Canal; and McReary, the youngest and baldest member of the team.Author Estleman is a past master at retro stylings, and these stories would have been right at home in the pages of Black Mask or Dime Detective. Highly recommended if you like that sort of thing.

Nitty, Gritty Arsenal of Democracy By david l. poremba This is the casebook of Detroit's infamous Racket Squad during the 1940's, when Detroit is at its nastiest; the decade following the US's entry into World War II saw an increase in wartime productivity, more and more men being called into active service from "non-essential+ jobs and the consequent rise in the crime rate. Occurring all across the country, rationing created a black market for items such as tires, gas and some foodstuffs. Units such as the racket squad (although fictitious in this case), were assigned to stop it.Loren Estleman is a master at period dialogue with a subtlety for humor, sarcasm and cynicism that the perceptive reader will enjoy. Unforgettable characters make up these ten stories but one will not soon forget the four men of the Racket Squad.I hope there are more stories forthcoming.

Estleman's work for almost forty years. That being said, Mr. Estleman superbly recreates the atmosphere of 1940s Detroit and that era in general. This book contains several short stories following the adventures of "The Four Horsemen", a special police squad formed to fight not only gangland crime but black marketeering during the World War II years. Estleman is one of the best purveyors of dialogue writing today. The comments made by members of the aforementioned squad sparkle with delectable hard-boiled detective slang. Each story enlightens the period of time it is set in with snapshots of then current cultural icons and attitudes. It is a pure joy for the brain!
