Nithya, a vivacious, intelligent and driven college senior has always known what she has wanted: a successful career in medicine and the love of her family. She’s even come to terms with the idea of an arranged marriage, a tradition her conservative Indian family has held up for thousands of years. When a night of partying puts her on a collision course with danger, Nithya’s entire life changes. Enter James St. Clair, the smart, challenging and heartbreakingly handsome American. As Nithya and James fall in love, she questions the future she and her parents have always planned. Now, Nithya has a choice to make: become a doctor and a good Indian bride, or step away from her family and centuries of culture to forge her own path. The decision she comes to takes her on a journey that transforms how she sees her future, her relationships with loved ones, and how she learns to put herself back together when even her best-laid plans fall apart.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Great and thought-provoking book! By Meredith **I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review**This was such a wonderful and thought-provoking book! I couldn't put it down. I'll admit, I didn't know much about Indian culture and modern day arranged marriage before reading THE REARRANGED LIFE. I'm so used to reading and seeing arranged marriage books where the woman is forced into marriage with a stranger against her will, and she meets him at the altar for the first time. This is nothing like that.Nithya has a loving, caring family who are a huge part of her life. For the most part, Nithya's parents are tremendously supportive. They don't want to choose her spouse for her (although they would be delighted if Nithya chose Nishanth, son of a close family friend, and aren't opposed to nudging her in that direction); however, they are very specific and set in their wishes that Nithya marries an Indian boy. Nithya is on board with this (after all, she wants to marry someone who will understand her culture, her family's traditions and inside jokes) until she meets her classmate James. James is handsome, smart...and American. Dating an American is seen as taboo in her culture. She struggles with her feelings for James, because it forces her to question her priorities, her loyalty to her family, and her commitment to her culture. She feels strong connections to both her family / Indian culture and roots, and to American culture.Yes, this book has a romance, but to me it was ultimately a book about self-discovery and trying to find your place between two cultures. Nithya struggles with her choice to enter the medical field (a choice that was highly influenced by the expectations of her family and culture) and worries about stepping out of her comfort zone when those plans she's had her whole life don't work out. There is a really great scene where Nishanth's family comes to Nithya's house, and everyone is so obviously pushing the two of them together that Nithya just feels so uncomfortable. I really felt her discomfort with the whole situation! Anyone who has struggled with growing up and coming into your own identity will be able to relate to Nithya's struggles.I learned a lot about Indian culture and traditions from this book, and to be honest I saw both Nithya and her parents' points of view on the issue. I loved the scene of Nithya's cousin's Indian wedding.I loved that this book was not black and white. There was no "right" answer and "wrong" answer. Nithya has a positive relationship with both Nishanth and James, and struggles with the fact that either man would be a good match for her in different ways. I loved James, and I also loved Nishanth, and both boys had moments that made me swoon (and made Nithya's choice that much harder). Nithya's choice ends up becoming a choice between what is more comfortable and compatible on paper, and what her heart really wants.James' parents also worry about his relationship with Nithya, as they don't want their son left broken hearted if Nithya were to choose her culture over him. It all felt very realistic and heart wrenching. It's a modern story about choices and sacrifices, and family and culture and loyalty. It's also beautifully written.I loved this book, and would recommend it to anyone. Five stars!

Khaled Hosseini meets Cora Cormack meets OH MY GOD MY POOR HEART By Laura Every so often, and by that I mean maybe once or twice a year, a book comes along that changes the way I see the world. For me, THE REARRANGED LIFE is one of those books.Nithya is a hyper intelligent, super lovable and crazy Type A personality. Her big dream in life is to make it to med school after she graduates from Penn State, and she's spent the last two decades working towards that goal. She's also expected to have an arranged marriage, as is traditional in her Indian family—a fact she's always been okay with.Until she meets James.Don't even get me started on how cute and lovable James is, by the way. I have it BAD for him. He's smart, charming and he'll do anything to protect Nithya. The problem? He's American. And that's something her family will never be able to overlook. So as you can probably tell, TRA is not your average NA contemporary romance. The obstacles standing in front of Nithya and James at times seem insurmountable, and even he often struggles to wrap his head around the cultural differences that ultimately prevent their love from blossoming into something deeper. The best way I can describe how this book makes you feel is: Khaled Hosseini meets Cora Carmack. Sharma's writing is so gorgeous and the world she creates is so rich that you feel like you're temporarily part of another culture, but then it contrasts with the sexy college romance settings and plots that Carmack made so famous. So the result is this vibrant, electrifying and incredibly emotionally charged story that makes you sob your heart out every ten pages.Sharma takes a very complex issue and weaves it into such a compelling story with such raw emotions that you can't help but feel like you're part of it. One of the best books I've read this year, without a doubt.

A sweet romance with an Indian flavor By Tegan Wren A taste of Indian culture, a sweet romance, and a young woman learning to balance her own needs with the expectations of her family...These are just some of the reasons readers will love THE REARRANGED LIFE. As if that weren't enough, the main character, Nithya, has a voice that's fun, engaging, and authentic to a college-aged woman who's driven and career-minded. I was happy to have Nithya take me along with her on this delicious ride. This book definitely kept me up past my usual bedtime because I just didn't want to stop reading. Some of Nithya's struggles really resonated with me, even though I'm no longer a college student and I'm not Indian-American. I found myself nodding and smiling as I read, remembering my internal battles when it came time to pursue my own path instead of continuing to do what would please my parents. Many readers will enjoy this aspect of the story. I also found myself cheering for both of the guys who are vying for Nithya's heart--one's Indian and one's not. Each one has a winning personality and other attributes that make it hard for Nithya to choose. I won't give away the ending, but I was very pleased with which guy she chooses and how she handles it. I also wanted to give Nithya a big high five for how she moves forward after her plans for med school hit a snag. The story advanced at a very nice clip and when I reached the end, I wasn't ready to say goodbye to this story! I'd love to read a sequel that tells us how the "rest of the story" unfolds for Nithya and the man she chooses.Anyone who enjoys a sweet romance will find this book to be a real treat. It's a bonus that the love story includes an exploration of cross-cultural relationships and the complications and triumphs they create.

Gordon Gardner, Ace Reporter! There’s not a story he can’t crack. He’s got his finger on the pulse of his town. His dogged tenacity means no politician is safe. Even the U. S. Army keeps tabs on him to ensure he safely harbors national secrets. And he looks smashing in a tux. His latest assignment is a basic police blotter piece: a pedestrian struck dead by a car. As a reporter who is second to none, Gardner’s disappointed. How could a simple accident be worthy of his considerable talents when there are so many other more interesting stories to cover? Even his pairing with a beautiful photographer doesn’t lighten his mood. His editor wants the piece yesterday. The police already closed the case. But then Gardner asks a simple question: why would a seemingly normal person willingly dive in front of a speeding car? Witnesses said the man went crazy just moments before he leapt to his death. What he alleged made no sense: he said the cars on the street didn’t exist and there was only one way to prove it. He was wrong. Dead wrong. Now, Gordon Gardner, in defiance of his editor and the police, resolves to investigate the mysterious circumstances behind the dead man’s life and uncover the real truth behind the phantom automobiles. Exclusive! Included in this volume, a heretofore unpublished action mystery from the golden age of pulp fiction!

It was because the boss was passed at him.Didn't take long before things changed. What with the dead man claiming the cars weren't real and jumping in front of one to prove it.Instinct told the reporter more was going on and, despite the newspaper's indifference, he pursues it with a vengeance.Scott Parker entertains us with another pre-WWII story set in Houston. The place: Detroit. The time: World War II.

While most of the police department is fighting overseas, the four men of the Racket Squad struggle to keep a lid on a powderkeg stuffed with draft-dodging troublemakers, Black Market gangsters, enemy saboteurs, and a mixed bag of racial and ethnic groups working uneasily side by side in defense plants run by the automobile industry.

With blackjacks, brass knuckles, tommy guns, and their bare fists, Lieutenant Max Zagreb, Sergeant Starvo Canal, and detectives McReary and Burke--known collectively as the "Four Horsemen"--battle their way through ten gritty stories in the hardest-boiled town during the twentieth century's hardest-boiled decade.

Review

"The 10 stories collected here represent all manner of mayhem.... Estleman knows Detroit inside out, and he is at his best among tough guys, hard women, and snappy dialogue delivered in smoke-filled rooms." --Booklist

"An engaging look at World War II Detroit and the men who were left to safeguard it while others fought overseas. Estleman's marvelous collection showcases his knowledge of this gutsy city, both past and present, that is guaranteed to please crime noir fans as well as history buffs." --Library Journal

"[Estleman's] precise ear for dialogue is on display with the snappy, sarcastic banter between the Squad and the other characters that is reminiscent of a Howard Hawks movie. This is a 'must have' for the legion of Estleman readers, fans of the period or simply admirers of well-written short stories. And another excellent, note-worthy addition to Estleman's many and varied contributions to crime fiction." --Bookgasm.com

"Loren D. Estleman's short story collection, Detroit Is Our Beat: Tales of the Four Horsemen, skillfully captures the hard boiled vibe of some of the best detective fiction of the 1940s. It is a quite impressive tour de force. Estleman has a fine ear for lively descriptive language. Not only are the stories in Detroit Is Our Beat well written, they will keep you guessing and often surprise you at the end." --Blogcritics.org

A trip to the rough-and-tumble past By Graham Powell DETROIT IS OUR BEAT is a collection of short stories featuring the Four Horsement, four detectives from the Rackets Squad who serve and protect the city while most of the able-bodies men are off fighting the Axis in WWII. First introduced in the novel JITTERBUG, these four roughnecks with badges are not afraid to use their fists, their guns, and if those don't work, their brains. In addition to the mystery and action, there's plenty of humor here, mostly in the banter between the men: Lt. Zagreb, the boss; Sergeant Canal, big as a bull and twice as tough; Officer Burke, who looks big standing next to anyone but Canal; and McReary, the youngest and baldest member of the team.Author Estleman is a past master at retro stylings, and these stories would have been right at home in the pages of Black Mask or Dime Detective. Highly recommended if you like that sort of thing.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Nitty, Gritty Arsenal of Democracy By david l. poremba This is the casebook of Detroit's infamous Racket Squad during the 1940's, when Detroit is at its nastiest; the decade following the US's entry into World War II saw an increase in wartime productivity, more and more men being called into active service from "non-essential+ jobs and the consequent rise in the crime rate. Occurring all across the country, rationing created a black market for items such as tires, gas and some foodstuffs. Units such as the racket squad (although fictitious in this case), were assigned to stop it.Loren Estleman is a master at period dialogue with a subtlety for humor, sarcasm and cynicism that the perceptive reader will enjoy. Unforgettable characters make up these ten stories but one will not soon forget the four men of the Racket Squad.I hope there are more stories forthcoming.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A PURE JOY FOR THE BRAIN! By Fred R. Smith My review of this book may be quite biased as I have been a doting fan of Loren D. Estleman's work for almost forty years. That being said, Mr. Estleman superbly recreates the atmosphere of 1940s Detroit and that era in general. This book contains several short stories following the adventures of "The Four Horsemen", a special police squad formed to fight not only gangland crime but black marketeering during the World War II years. Estleman is one of the best purveyors of dialogue writing today. The comments made by members of the aforementioned squad sparkle with delectable hard-boiled detective slang. Each story enlightens the period of time it is set in with snapshots of then current cultural icons and attitudes. It is a pure joy for the brain!

Moreover, Kristine Kelley's knowledge of life and work on sailing vessels of the period is phenomenal. As a result, the reader is easily transported into the world of the protagonist and joins her in adventures on the sea off the coast of South America. This "Frigate"-like book takes the invited reader on a journey "Lands away" from the stress of everyday life. Emily Dickinson would love it!

By Susan J Rehorek I loved the way the author approached the character of Doctor Jack. She explained "monstrous" aspect of his life in an entirely plausible manner, consistent with scientific thoughts and actions of that era. The story was written at such a fast pace, great use of time, I was sorry when it ended. I eagerly look forward to future adventures of Viola Stewart, as she will continue to live her life despite all the restrictions placed upon her by Victorian society.

By Hodges It's a terrible thing to read an account of someone starving almost to death and then go make yourself a sandwich. I did that a lot as I read this book. I won't take all the credit to my own brand of heartlessness. Yelena's Leningrad is a wonderful novel; the author paints such a vivid picture that you will have a physical response to his words. I read this novel and I was made to feel hungry, cold, ill, horrified and then relieved by turns. And after that traumatic experience I turned back to the beginning and read it all again. A brilliant book – I recommend it to anyone and everyone.

The year is 1888. Detective Sergeant John Billings has been sent to a remote house in the Yorkshire Moors to investigate the suspicious death of Roger Thornton, a young man who seemed to have everything to live for. He gets a frosty reception from the lady of the house and her rag-tag collection of domestic staff who try to put him off the scent, but as Billings delves deeper into their lives, he uncovers hidden passions, bitter rivalries and a truth so dark and sinister, it will shock you to the core. Fusing Gothic romanticism and fin-de-siecle melodrama, 'Death Takes A Lover' is a chilling entry into a world which some may not want to enter, but if you do, don't say you haven't been warned...

The attention to historical detail is thorough without sacrificing action, drama, and intensity in the narrative. The story revolves around a murder investigation, but the investigating officer is not your traditional Victorian detective. Without spoiling the story, Bosman creates a believable back story for Billings without deviating from the norms of the time. Nicely handled. The story moves, and there are enough Holmes/ Watson twists to keep you reading (and wanting more). Great read.

I'm impatient to read more about DS Billings, to get to know him better and see how he deals with his otherness. Formidable beginning to a series!

By padme35 This is a great introduction to the DS Billings Mystery series although it is a little short for my liking. It's pretty obvious that Billings is a gay man who is not ready to admit that part of himself, whether it is his Quaker upbringing or the era that he lives in, who is to say. I did appreciate the fact that it is not an overused plotline but looked upon in the the detective's inner monologues.

Buy and read and love this, you won't regret it By Zelda Darling This book has so much I've been looking for from fantasy: queer characters, a setting that feels built from a history that isn't a generic Middle Ages full of white people, a captivating story, evocative writing, and the ability to bring real feelings about without cheap tricks.Things I didn't know I wanted in fantasy: bugs, apparently.Buy and read and love this, you won't regret it!

100 Ideas for Secondary Teachers: Outstanding Lessons (100 Ideas for Teachers), by Ross Morrison McGill

Review

“I used the The 5 Minute Lesson Plan and The 5 Minute Interview Plan to prepare for my second interview in my training year. They really helped me to focus on what I wanted to achieve in the lesson and ensured that I showed the school the best of what I have to offer. I was successful and I can't wait to use the 5 Minute Plan in my NQT year. Thanks Teacher Toolkit!” ―Danielle Manning, History NQT

“As you would expect of its author, Ross Morrison McGill aka @TeacherToolkit, has produced a book brim full of creative and sparkling ideas to help make teachers' lives easier. Covering everything from the ubiquitous #5MinuteLessonPlan, to hints and tips on behaviour and practical ideas for lessons, it is easy to dip in and out of and is bound to be a hit. So if you need inspiration to help you plan outstanding lessons, you need look no further – this gem of a book is for you.” ―Heather Leatt, School Improvement Adviser

“Ross has become a new media phenomenon; and this book is redolent of his happy relationship with emerging and emerged technologies. While it is conventionally published, it includes a deal of unconventional thought, and that thought is expressed in a way that takes in every possible media for conveying ideas and information: there are hashtags, weblinks, ideas for taking things forwards, links to videos he has made. Where a talented teacher might come up with a couple of groundbreaking ideas over a career. Ross Morrison McGill has ten before breakfast: some are more conventional and massively influential (the five minute lesson plan, and pose, pause, pounce, bounce) some wilder and more in keeping with the guy I met at the oche: (hopscotch calculators and paper plates for AfL strategies).

All-in-all though this is a book of ideas: the manifold ideas of an experienced and talented campaigner, who keeps himself up-to-the-minute with new technologies, who still plays in the classroom every day, and who knows the value of quirk. I wish he was my teacher!” ―Phil Beadle, author, English teacher and educational consultant

“This book is written and produced by an excellent well respected practitioner and I know it will fly off the shelves! It's a collection of 100 ideas for planning & delivering outstanding lessons, not occasionally but consistently. Every secondary school teacher in every school needs their own copy of this practical and useful book - it will change their lives and make their lessons even better. Teachers can use this book as individuals planning their lessons or they could use it when planning jointly with colleagues. There is something in here for everybody!

I would advise secondary head teachers to purchase a copy for all their teachers and to introduce it on an INSET day then let them loose in teams to get on with planning. Revisit it as a school or a team every term and ask teachers which tips they have used and how they helped make their lesson even better.

Ross McGill is very well known and well respected through the Teachers Toolkit & Teachmeets which have put teachers in charge of their own CPD - which is exactly the way it should be.

I recommend this book (and Ross) without reservation.'” ―Kenny Frederick, Retired headteacher

“Wonderfully digestible, and just about the right size to slip into a jacket pocket, this little book makes the ideal companion for any busy educator...You won't be disappointed.” ―Teach Secondary

“fantastic text... Everything in the book will help you progress as a teacher and as a school.” ―The Teacher

About the Author Ross Morrison McGill is an assistant head, NQT trainer, classroom teacher and the popular @TeacherToolkit. Find him on twitter and use the hashtags in the book to share your experiences and discover how other teachers are being inspired by the #100 Ideas.

Find Your Life's Work by Listening to Your Mind & Soul By Kara Lane In this short but powerful career guide, Millen Livis recommends we strike a balance between choosing work based on the mind's rational perspective and the soul's expansive perspective. The result is work that satisfies both our physical and spiritual needs. The guide offers practical tips for figuring out WHAT we want to do and then HOW to go about doing it. The "what" includes exercises and questions to help us uncover our passions. The "how" helps us discover how to succeed - for example, by doing our homework to figure out what knowledge and skills we need for our chosen career. My favorite chapter was the one called "You Are What You Think." The philosophy expressed there reminded me of one of my all-time favorite books, James Allen's "As a Man Thinketh". Millen talks about limiting beliefs, gratitude, and counting our achievements. As a perfectionist, I especially liked the way she challenges her fear of action. She asks herself, "Why not try?" or "It doesn't have to be perfect - you can correct and improve. It's time to act."Anyone who is unhappy with their current job will find inspiration, and the tools to find a satisfying career, in this book.

Giovanni In Millen Livis' great book "A Shift Towards Purpose", Millen shows us where the path to a fulfilling professional life can be found. A quick and easy read, the book encourages readers to trust their intuition as it is a great navigation system that leads to change. She also explains that in order to shift to the new career path, you must first love yourself so that you truly believe that you are worthy enough to have a fantastic career! Using easy-to-follow exercises, she clearly shows readers how to tap into their intuition to find out how they can "make a life, as opposed to just making a living." Livis also offers five fantastic techniques to help readers find their new career and life path, and discusses in detail the four pillars people need to succeed including knowledge, action, support and marketing. Being aware of your limiting beliefs is one of the keys to success, and Livis artfully shows us how to overcome them so we can live the life of our dreams. If you are just making a living and are yearning for change, this is the book that will show you how to get there.

The book includes several brief yet effective self-examination exercises to ferret out the reader’s true desires and emotions about career, change, and self-discovery… then take appropriate action. The book includes the author’s own effective prayers to God for life path clarity, and is peppered with inspirational quotes from well known authors and motivational speakers. I Don't Read Those Books By CJ McClain From the initial description this seemed to be a story about a man sentenced to prison for a crime he didn't commit and I don't read those kind of books. It also mentioned a "pint-size princess", too cutesy, I don't read those books either. But I have a Kindle Unlimited subscription and have branched out to read books I wouldn't have looked at twice in the past.My description is: It is one of the best books I ever read! For me a necessary component of a great book is characters I love, hate or both. Tate and Sweetie are people I wish I knew in real life and the beauty of this book is that it felt like real life as I was reading it.I always buy books I like enough to read again, after all it can be dropped from Kindle Unlimited and the price can go up . I bought this one at about the halfway point and know I will read it again and again.

There was sadness but more beauty. There are tearful moments but a lot of humour too and I finished it simply feeling good. I loved it almost from the beginning.

Anguished by death. Driven by revenge.

Bryony Russell and her two sisters are left destitute by the disgrace and unexpected death of their father, a wealthy shipping magnate. He left a cryptic note, and Bryony is determined to find the real villain and clear her father’s name. In disguise as a servant, Bryony infiltrates the home of her father’s business partner to find proof of his guilt…or innocence. It’s not just clues that Bryony finds, but temptation too.…

Adrian Bruton, Earl of Kilmartyn, immediately suspects there is something not quite right about his new housekeeper. The brooding, irresistible rake plays along because he has his own guilty secrets, and his venal, scheming wife holds the key to them, trapping him in a hate-filled marriage. But against his will he’s fascinated by Bryony, seeing past the scars on her face to show her the beauty she never knew she had. Bryony must uncover the truth and attempt to preserve her father’s legacy before things go too far and she falls in love with a man who might very well be her worst enemy.

Never Kiss a Rake (Scandal at the House of Russell), by Anne Stuart

From Publishers Weekly Stuart takes a break from paranormals and romantic thrillers (Risk the Night) to launch a historical romance series about three sisters unexpectedly orphaned and left destitute. In 1869 London, Miss Bryony Russell, the eldest sister, applies pseudonymously for the position of housekeeper for the household of Adrian Bruton, Earl of Kilmartyn, her father's former business partner and the man she believes may be responsible for her father's financial ruin and suspicious death. While the pampered Cecily, Lady Kilmartyn, refuses "Mrs. Greaves" because she bears some smallpox scars on her face, Adrian decides that Mrs. Greaves is the perfect person to revamp his shambles of a household. As Bryony searches for clues to Adrian's perfidy, she falls victim to his immense charm. Bemused by the estrangement between Adrian and his faithless wife, Bryony soon realizes that there is a hidden depth of character behind the earl's easy grace and seductive wiles. Stuart deftly combines scintillating romance with a hint of mystery in this straightforward story marred only by a somewhat abrupt conclusion.

Review "Stuart is back with an absorbing gothic romance full of deadly secrets and shocking passion. While her heroine's pluck and determination are consistently admirable, her real triumph lies in the creation of a hero steeped in fascinating historic details and unbending in his sense of self and his devotion to the woman who finally touches his heart…Stuart's fans and new readers alike will find much to enjoy in this unconventional story and the series to follow." —RT Book Reviews, 4 Stars"Anne Stuart is truly the queen of historical romance. In Never Kiss a Rake, she has written a captivating and engaging tale of a woman on a mission to clear her father's name, while falling in love with the very man whom she suspects." —The Romance Reviews

The H and h are both less than admirable people--in fact, by the end I rather despised them both. H has NO admirable qualities at all that are apparent other than his good looks. The h is a ninny who falls for him solely based on his good looks, even though he is married, even though she has been mistreated all her life because of her lack of good looks and even though he may have murdered his wife. There are plot gaps a city block wide in this book. SPOILERS The wife is apparently murdered and the H and h start to move along that same day with their romance??? She is not upset by this little fact, after cleaning up blood?? and thinking he did it?? And even if he disliked his wife, her death doesn't stop him from trying to seduce the h a few hours later?? Come on. So unbelievable, or else these two are heartless. Also unbelievable are the seduction scenes where they are making love while she is in pain and injured. Just totally unbelievable that she was not in agony given her injury, much less than she is enjoying making love. This was so off-putting--insulting to the reader's intelligence. The author tried to make us care about the H and h, but succeeded only in making them seem like totally amoral scoundrels--as bad or worse than the wife the author wants us to hate but never told us why we should. This book is just a rambling disjointed disappointing mess.

She is a master of creating the redeemable bad boy and her new series beginning with Never Kiss a Rake has a bad boy element to the story. This is a Victorian setting incorporating mystery, intrigue and masquerades into the story line.Byrony Russell and her sisters are destitute after their father dies in a carriage accident. After his death, he is accused of embezzling from the company and he is also accused of planning on leaving England and the girls behind to face his misdeeds.Byrony, the eldest, does not believe this story and neither do her two sisters. She is convinced that Lord Adrian Kilmartyn, her father's partner, is the culprit behind the embezzlement and her father's death. She decides to infiltrate his home as a housekeeper and find proof of his treachery. Byrony knows that the London homes is ill run thanks to Kilmartyn's beautiful but dissolute wife.Byrony is aware that Adrian has a reputation as a ladies' man but she has no fear of him casting his eyes on her. She had a bout of small pox as a child and has scars on her face. Byrony's entire self perception is based on her pox scars and this has shaped her life, she really does not see herself as attractive nor does she believe anyone else would either.Adrian is a rogue, an Irish Lord who is a fish out of water in England. His wife who he once loved is venal and vain and his contempt of her is obvious. Adrian hires Byrony more to cause his wife trouble than her skills. He does find her attractive though and like any hunter, he chases that which tries to elude him.Byrony is way over her head when it comes to Adrian and their relationship is a source of delight for Adrian. Adrian teases Byrony and she has a tendency to jump to the bait. She seems to forget her role as a housekeeper way too much. She snaps at her employer and I found this odd since she easily could have been fired. Byrony is in a constant struggle with her feelings and she has so little self confidence that she almost is a one note character (her mantra is: I am so ugly you cannot be interested in me).Still there is a real charm about Adrian and Ms Stuart does an excellent job of allowing the reader to see his inner turmoil regarding his housekeeper. He wants to be honorable but he is so intrigued that he finds himself in Byrony's company way too much.Overall I am giving this story 3.5 stars. The series premise is good and a bit different for Ms. Stuart. The story between Adrian and Byrony has sexual tension but I grew weary of Byrony's interactions with the hero which were mostly frosty and combative. Subservient she is not in the role of a housekeeper and I wondered how she thought she could pull off the charade. I by no means am giving up on this series though, Adrian was an interesting character, more than the heroine, and Byrony's sisters were too.

The heroine sets out to find her fathers murderer, but she is naive to the point of stupidity. She is supposedly used to manage her family's home for years, but knows nothing about the hierarchy of servants. She blunders along, falls in love? with the the hero, who she thinks is her fathers murderer, in one day, goes three days without sleep and very little food, but cannot sleep for dreaming about him. It goes on and on, and I had to skim through the murder of the hero's wife, the heroine being shot without realizing what has happened(growing up managing a gentlemans residence in the country?)and then marries the hero...the story never stopped being irritating. It is so full of holes it irritated me to a point of accelerated heartbeat. Read the House of Rohan stories instead.

By Robin Meloy Goldsby Sharon Reamer proves herself once again as a master storyteller with Wings of the Guardian, a well-crafted tale with plenty of surprises, strong characters, and subtle twists. She jams a lot into the story, leaving the reader satisfied but anxious to read more. I look forward to the next story in her Immortal Guardian series. As a fan of Reamer's muscled prose—I have read all of her Schattenreich novels, starting with Primary Fault and working my way through the series—I welcome anything this Reamer chooses to publish. She's a solid writer with a unique slant and a singular voice. Keep 'em coming!

In setting the scene, Reamer has given tremendous attention to the details that make ancient Babylon come alive for the viewer. The robes, silks and tapestries; the oils and scents; the fruit and wine; every descriptive element of the story contributes to building a sensual world that draws the reader in. The main character is an immortal being of many names and forms, which adds to the mystery of his place and purpose. Supporting characters are more thinly drawn as one would expect in a short story, but Alexander the Great's appearance is a treat that makes me hope it won't be the last we see of him in this series.

By kc I love Sharon Kae Reamer's stories because of her unique blend of mythology and fiction. Her other series, the Shadow Zone, is even better, but I still find this series unique and worth reading. It has nothing to do with the Immortal Guardians series- hers is the Immortal Guardian Series which does sound similar but isn't. I found her main character interesting and the plot also strange and unique. I recommend it.

There are fairies and talking trees as well as easy to understand information about trees and how they grow. It works as a book to be read to a young child and also as a book to be read by an older child who has learned to read on their own. The illustrations are so appealing. They invite children as well as adults to page through again and again.

It particularly touched me because I have several plants that I have and have had over the years and I always try and get kids from them so their legacy can still live on and pass them onto others so they can enjoy their presence. I feel it appeals to all ages and reminds us plants are alive as well.
