About the Author Why an ORAL Reading Assessment Test? Learning to read is an ORAL learning process: The beginning student learns to SOUND OUT the words they are learning. They learn the simple combinations like - a - plus - t - makes the word at. Then they are taught if - s - is added they now can pronounce the word sat. So it goes as the students at first SOUNDS OUT WORDS ALOUD. Later they begin to sound them out in their minds, not pronouncing the word out loud. This simple process is the basis of learning to read. If the student can PRONOUNCE the word correctly he/she can READ IT! The professional educators have succeeded in making learning to read seem like a mysterious process, when it is NOT. (Samuel Blumenfeld’s book How To Tutor explains this more fully: ISBN 9780941995290) Most parents do not realize there are only 44 sounds, or phonograms, which comprise the entire English language. The short a sound, the long a sound, the short e sound, the long e sound, etc. It is not difficult to teach these relatively few sounds to the students, who can then sound out most words for themselves Many people believe that the English language is highly irregular, meaning here are a lot of non- standard word/sounds to memorize. Again, this is not true. English is about 85 % regular, meaning only about 10-15% of words the student will encounter do not follow the simple sound patterns of the 44 phonograms they will need to learn. The Blumenfeld Oral Reading Assessment Test was developed by celebrated educational author Samuel L. Blumenfeld who is the author of numerous books on education including the famous: Alpha-Phonics A Primer for Beginning Readers, his simple, easy and inexpensive phonics reading instruction book which is rated so very highly by many especially, homeschool materials reviewers. You can find detailed information on Author Samuel Blumenfeld by looking up his Alpha-Phonics elsewhere on Amazon.com and selecting the About the Author section. Full information on Alpha-Phonics is easy to find. Its ISBN is: 9780941995320. This is the new 2015 version and is available at a special low price! Among the many books and articles Blumenfeld has authored are: How To Tutor, How To Start your Own Private School, Is Public Education Necessary?, NEA Trojan Horse in American Education, The Outcome Based Education/Whole Language Fraud, Crimes of the Educators.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Blumenfeld Oral Reading Assessment Test Unique Easy Simple By Peter F. Watt [[VIDEOID:mo3S6VNE61KI5J4]]The Blumenfeld Oral Reading Assessment Test is unique (It is perhaps the only ORAL test widely available today), is easy to conduct, is easy to score. is inexpensive, can be used up to five times, has BOTH pre-tests and post tests. and is very helpful especially to the Homeschooling Mom who wants to know where her children are in their learning to read. As can be seen by the VIDEO here and by clicking on the sample pages available above on the Amazon website, the test is composed of 380 words which progress from the most simple to the more difficult. The person who is conducting the test LISTENS to the student PRONOUNCE the words in the test and scores the student based on how many mispronounced words he or she makes. A scoring chart allows the Testor to determine the approximate grade level of the student from 3rd.. through 12th. grade. The test normally takes only one half hour or less. There are five such tests included in the Testing package, so the parent can test more than one family member. (It can also be used to test ADULTS!) This is called the PRE-test. Also included are five additional tests to be used to test the students AFTER any remediation has been conducted. The 380 words in the AFTER Test are different from those in the Pre-test but of equal challenge. This allows the parent to determine how much progress the student has made through remediation activity. For anyone conducting the test who is not 100% sure of the pronunciations she will be hearing there is a Pronunciation CD ROM available she can use to listen in advance to all the words in the test. It is very modestly priced to assure everyone can afford it. Blumenfeld Oral Reading Assessment Test Pronunciation CD ROM The Blumenfeld Oral Reading Assessment Test was developed by Dr. Samuel Blumenfeld, author of the celebrated reading instruction program Alpha-Phonics A Primer for Beginning Readers Alpha-Phonics Book Including CD ROM Version which is also available from Amazon and has been used by Homeschooling families since the early 1980's. Once the parent has determined with the Blumenfeld Oral Reading Assessment Test what reading level her child has attained, she can use Alpha-Phonics A Primer for Beginning Readers to conduct whatever reading instruction may be needed. In addition there are available from Amazon a set of READERS How To Tutor Little Companion Readers (pack of 10) and a Practice Workbook Alpha-Phonics and How to Tutor Phonics Companion Workbook The Readers and Workbook, while optional, have been found by many Moms to be very helpful in teaching phonics reading to their children with Alpha-Phonics. NOTE # 1.: While the Blumenfeld Oral Reading Assessment Test is designed to test for students who would be in the equivalent of 3rd. through 12th. grade, it can be used to test first and second grade level students. Normally the 1st. and 2nd. grade level is where students become readers and, therefore, the TEST concentrates on level 3 through 12. NOTE # 2.: One might ask why an ORAL Test? The Answer is that learning to read is actually learning to SOUND out words. The sounding out process starts by the beginning student learning to sound out words orally. As they develop their reading skill they begin to sound out the words in their heads and ultimately cease the oral sounding out of what they are reading. But the process begins aloud - orally.
