About the Author The Author: Joanne Brand wrote from the heart of her characters. She researched facts to present truth, as well as pertinent historical information to keep the reader in the era of her novel. A snippet of fact, plus history, are the basis of her novel that she then wove into a believable story. The author grew up in South Dakota, but moved to Colorado as a young woman. She Is retired, lives in the Denver area and is an accomplished author, painter and a volunteer in various projects. She also enjoys her children and grandchildren. She feels her life experiences and her love of reading have given her valuable education and understanding. Brand wrote this as a possible concept of her parents’ lives. A few years ago, the author received some items of her father’s that her mother had hidden away. She started to piece a fraction of his life together as well as what may have been her mother’s life. The rest was up to her imagination of how her parents’ personalities, emotions and lives might have been. See all the author's books on Amazon.com or on her website: joannebrand-author.com

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It’s Much More Than a Love Story By Ed Martley When Joanne Brand wrote of the crushing burdens her parents carried during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the story reflected the lives of thousands of others struggling to survive the soul-sucking deprivation of that dreadful period of American history.Dancing to Memories is a classic story of the cowboy and the schoolmarm. The cowboy is author Brand’s father, Jack Morris, and her mother, Grace Lee, is the schoolmarm. It’s fun to squirm while reading about these two painfully shy and proper people as they drift toward each other. Grace indeed is a teacher and lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota; Jack is a footloose fellow wandering the West — busting broncs here, fixing fence and chasing cows there, all the time longing for the home he never had.Because of a long illness, Grace had a late start in life, and when she regained her health she was some years past what was considered prime marrying age. She was lonely, and filled with a longing for love, for a husband and family. So who comes riding out of the dust, hat in hand, mumbling little more than “yes ma’am, no ma’am,” but stout-hearted Jack Morris. And away we go!Dancing to Memories is much more than a love story. It is a carefully researched and highly accurate portrayal of Depression life in the West. This reviewer is about Brand’s age, I grew up in similar rural country. The descriptions in her book are much the same as my parents related to me: stories of drought, starvation, and dust, dust, dust carried by the merciless prairie winds.

This brought back memories By Amazon Customer Joanne Brand conveys the sense of place, the time in history, and the characters in an authentic and powerful way. Reading the story of her parents brought me back to times that my parents talked about. Unlike Joanne, my parents talked frequently about their early lives, their coming together and their life together. Born and raised in rural Colorado, much of their life echoed that of Grace and Jack, including meeting at a local dance. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story, and sharing the emotional ups and downs as well as the drama of two people so well crafted by Ms. Brand.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A very enjoyable reading experience. By Amazon Customer A very enjoyable reading experience! The hardship of a depression era 1930's South Dakota family is counterbalanced by a great love. Dancing to Memories is a compelling, compassionate, humorous and enjoyable read.
