The only life Lydia has ever known is the one her mother created for the two of them within a small mountain valley in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. Mama manages to keep the outside world, which she claims is not a part of God's plan for their lives, a secret for nearly seventeen years, until Lydia happens upon a young man in the forest. This man tells her his family owns a vineyard on the other side of the mountain, and he promises to find out the truth behind her isolated life. While Lydia begins to find herself torn between loyalties to a mother she loves dearly and a God she no longer understands, a tragedy thrusts her into a world full of people, places, and passions she never dreamed possible. She ultimately believes truth will give her the freedom to move on, but will Lydia learn to love God and accept His calling on her life before the world captivates her heart and soul?

King’s perfect pace keeps us engaged By Christina Ivazes No Eye Has Seen: Beyond the Valley is the first novel by Roanne King and hopefully not the last. The title barely describes what lies beyond the sheltered life of the young Lydia. This is a story of much more than self-discovery, well-crafted prose, romance and historical fiction. More importantly, is the underlying message clearly illustrating the differences between healthy doses of faith and extreme parenting in the name of faith; the latter which can result in future handicapped adult children living in a world beyond protection. Steeped in the waning years of Nevada County’s gold mining history, readers are propelled into the journey of Lydia and her mother’s own mysterious family history. All the while, King’s perfect pace keeps us engaged, surprised and satisfied up to the very end; even as we wish the sequel were in hand.

Lynn No Eye Has Seen: Beyond the Valley takes you back to a different era when life was simpler but still had its own struggles to endure. This is the story of the challenges Lydia, the main character, faces when her world is turned up-side-down, and the strength of love that pulls her through. A well written novel by Roanne King. A good read when you want to journey back in time, and escape from the hustle and bustle of today's world.

Caleb Lawler returns to his Tennessee farm after the Civil War, and recognizes almost immediately that it's going to be difficult, if not impossible, to keep his family from starvation on what is left of the place. If he can sell the land, however, and take his family west along the Oregon Trail, he will have a good chance of making a better living. The older children, Andy, 14; Anne, 11; Maggie, 9; are enthusiastic about the notion of "westering." Their mother, Theresa Lawler, was less certain about the trip, in part because there is also two-year-old, Jerusha to consider. Finally, though, Caleb convinces his wife of the wisdom of the trip, and the family gets underway. There are problems from the outset; the family is late getting started, the group with which they are traveling is problematic, and there are difficulties they hadn't considered. Almost everything that can go wrong, does. Still, no one could have predicted the calamity that befalls the group, leaving the four Lawler children stranded in the Wyoming wilderness, with very limited means of survival, and little hope of getting to the fort that offers their only refuge.

The characters are interesting and multidimensional and the story is so compelling that it has made me want to read more on the history of the event on which it's based. I highly recommend this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Conflict and Survival In the Settlement of the American Northwest By Patti L Pioneers try to overcome the forces of nature, Indian attacks, and evil men among them, children struggle to find their way and survive in the wilderness, and soldiers battle Indians and political manipulation while their wives adjust to a primitive lifestyle on the isolated frontier. All of this is woven together in an intriguing story. June Harris captures the personality and struggles of each individual character to create a memorable read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A perfect summer read By Diane Kelly An engaging story about a time I knew little about. Historical fiction at its best: not a history lesson, a novel set back in time.

"This final installment of the Dewey Decimal trilogy capably stands alone as a quirky, sparkly read that will embiggen your cerebellum."--Library Journal"Larson treats the English language as a sort of toy to play with and use for experimentation; language is not just used to tell the story, in other words, but is a part of the story, an extension of its narrator, Dewey Decimal, one of the more offbeat characters in fiction. A fitting conclusion to a unique and memorable trilogy."--Booklist"A sharp and satisfying conclusion to one of the most unique hard-boiled arcs in recent memory."--Kirkus Reviews"Dewey is an unlikely hero, a gimpy, smart-mouthed loner, obsessed with a brand-name hand sanitizer. His indomitable spirit and his distinctive ghetto-infused, educated patter give Larson's series its unique and spicy character."--Publishers Weekly"The final book in Larson's compulsively readable, uniquely strange Dewey Decimal trilogy, The Immune System features Larson's patented ability to play with words and sentence structure in a way that mirrors the disorienting events happening in the plot. And yet, because the reader is in such good hands with Larson, it doesn't matter if everything is clear right from the start. Just trust that Larson knows where he's taking you, and enjoy the slightly surreal, definitely funny ride."--The L Magazine"The final book in the Dewey Decimal System trilogy, in which Dewey deals with dirty politicians, civilian outcasts, Saudi, royals, and the truth about the cataclysmic events in NYC. I adored these books, and it thrills me to know the author is also a member of Shudder to Think."--Book Riot"The final installment of one of the finest (and weirdest) thriller trilogies ever....There is physical action aplenty in this breathtaking novel--fistfights, shoot-outs, bombs, etc.--but during the finale of Larson's glorious trilogy, we learn that in the end, the only struggle that ever mattered was Decimal's struggle with himself."--Mystery Scene"[An] engrossing concluding entry in Larson's Dewey Decimal trilogy....Larson's version of New York City is vividly...realized, almost becoming a character in itself, and his fast-paced narrative style makes the most of both his post-apocalyptic setting and his brain-scrambled protagonist."--Manhattan Book Review"A perfect synthesis of poetic observation melded with streetwise patois, percussive and rhythmic....It’s quite a feat to write a dystopia that is fun and takes the reader to a better place for a while. Larson does this."--RazorcakeThe Immune System is the explosive final installment in the Dewey Decimal trilogy. Picking up months after the events of The Nervous System, Dewey finds himself running dirty operations for the crooked Senator Howard. When Dewey is tasked with disrupting unrest from a growing group of outcast civilians, and simultaneously given the assignment of protecting a pair of Saudi royals, he is forced to look within and make some impossible choices. Ultimately, this puts him at odds with his benefactor and the powers that be.In the course of the novel, we learn the true nature of the 2/14 cataclysm that decimated New York City, and by the end of it, Dewey must choose whether or not to face his own past. He must also decide if he is to be part of the elite control system, or if he's willing to commit himself to the unknown, without the protections he enjoys in the good favor of the landlords of the new New Order.

The Immune System: A Dewey Decimal novel (Akashic Urban Surreal Series), by Nathan Larson

Review "And so we come to the final volume in Nathan Larson's edgy, spectacular, dystopian trilogy...It is the narrator, his driving prose, his struggles against the darkness, that makes [the books] impossible to put down...Go back to the beginning, read them in order, admire the growth in the central character, be swept up in the details of a city struggling not to die, and mourn the loss of what we have and might so lightly throw away. But if you can't do that, read this one anyway. You won't regret it."--Reviewing the Evidence"Readers who enjoy noir or hardboiled mystery, dystopian fiction, or gritty urban fantasy should absolutely try the series."--Killer Nashville, Book of the Day"Nathan Larson's writing style in this book is a lot like the style within Pygmy by Chuck Palahniuk--short and somewhat curt sentences that allow the complex and multi-level story to be easily understood and enjoyed. This book is definitely for anyone who enjoys the crude humor of Palahniuk and the fantastical storytelling of Orson Scott Card."--SLUG MagazinePraise for the Dewey Decimal series:"The most incredible thing about Larson's novel is just how credible it is...and the prose is perfect, as tweaked and jumpy and memorable as the man known as Dewey Decimal. I'm a Library of Congress girl myself, but Larson's uncannily original fiction deserves its own number within any system of library classification."--Laura Lippman, author of After I'm Gone"Larson's vividly imagined world and his quirky narrator are likely to win him a cadre of loyal fans."--Publishers Weekly"Whiplash prose, teeth-gnashing dialogue and post-civilization concepts that make a crazy (amateur) librarian in a pitch-black world a hell of a lot of fun...A good time for fans of the likes of Charlie Huston and Charles Stross."--Kirkus Reviews

About the Author Nathan Larson is an award-winning film music composer, having created the scores for over thirty movies, including Boys Don't Cry, Dirty Pretty Things, and Margin Call. The Dewey Decimal System and The Nervous System are the highly acclaimed first two installments in his Dewey Decimal crime-fiction trilogy, and are followed by The Immune System. Larson lives in Harlem, New York City, with his wife and son.

By Teritree001971 THE IMMUNE SYSTEM is the third in the Dewey Decimal series by Nthan Larson. For those of you who've never read this series before, I have to warn ou there is cussing with a few racial slurs throughout the story. That being said, I enjoyed reading this story and although I'd never read the rest of the series, had no trouble following this one. The one thing I really didn't care for is the ending. Dewey Decimal lives in a library spending his time cleaning books and restocking the shelves, in the hopes of returning things to normal in some small sense of the word. Along with this, to support his lifestyle, he takes a mission or two. For you see, Dewey Decimal has suffered loss form past adventures, yet he continues on without really knowing why. He just does. He is constantly takin ghis little pills, cleaning his hands with his beloved Purell and all the while trying to ignore the throbbing mass at the back of his head. As Dewey accepts his latest assignment from the Senator, in the back of his mind he is wondering just how long he can keep his condition from his boss for he knows that the minute his usefulness ends, he is dead. The latest job is a relatively simple escort case and just a little too late Dewey realises he has been set up. He was never meant to reach his destination. With all his flaws, you find yourself hoping old Dewey will pull through just one more time. One of the things I would have liked to see more of is Dr Kavan's story and how he fit into everything. How the two knew each other and just how deep their relationship was. Just how the doctor ended up where he was. More technical details with his job. If you like science fiction you should definitely give this story a try. New York is changed in ways one finds easy to imagine today.

From the Author In 1752 A Struggling Nation Ordered Notjust a Bell butTHE BELLFrom where you ask? From a company in London, England, named Lester and Pack.Do you know what is inscribed on the Bell?Do you know how many Bells were cast?Do you know why the Liberty Bell became a Symbol of Hope?Do you know who cast the Bell that is now known as the Liberty Bell? The State House of PhiladelphiaWhat does that have to do with the History of the Bell?A quick trip and booking a hotel near the Liberty Bell is not enough. We need to teach our children about Liberty. If we don't teach them about LibertyHow will they know when to sound the watch bell? Will they recognize when our freedoms are being threatened?....Now to the Magna Carta (Great Charter in Latin. Hey it was 1215!!)On June 15th, 1215, a charter was agreed upon by King John of England at Runnymede, near the Town of Windsor, England. The purpose?

About the Author Spencer Hawke was born in England and educated in the United Kingdom and set off as a young boy seeking adventure abroad. At the age of 21, he and a friend left for Africa and crossed the continent North to South through the Sahara, sometimes on foot when their old Land Rover did not want to travel as far as they did. Eight months later, having dodged many conflicts and machine-gun-toting patrols, the pair rolled into South Africa bound for Australia, determined to swim the coral of the Great Barrier Reef. But fate had a different plan for Spencer. In Johannesburg, he met a Brazilian girl who professed undying love for the young Brit. He changed his ticket and flew off to Rio de Janeiro in search of his love. Once in Rio, she was nowhere to be found, and short on funds, he was forced to get a job. He went to work for General Motors in Sao Paulo. Eight years and two children later, he again had enough money to take off for what he thought would be his final destination. Spencer landed in Oklahoma in the middle of the 1980's oil boom, and he and his children made a home for themselves in Oklahoma City. Today, he is raising another gift from God, grandson Devon, who is already as avid adventurer as his grandfather.

Now that would be a very rough way to come to America. This book gives a lot of history in a very interesting way. It talks about John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Ben Franklin.

But when Kit unexpectedly returns, her pretend marriage begins to feel seductively real…My thoughts: Sitting here with a cup of coffee at my side, my spectacles at the ready, a pencil in my hand, a wee bit of white chocolate bar and the book, 'A Kiss For Lady Mary' written by Ella Quinn.I always write down five words that pertain to my understanding and thoughts as I process in my mind the novel I am reading. Words that best describe to me what the story is foretelling, the emotions evoked by the author's storytelling. I take delight in circling sentences that I find intriguing, funny or descriptive...you know, captivating! I also write my thoughts within the pages of the novel. My first word...Humor: Greatly appreciated throughout this novel, from Lady Mary's thoughts on how to deal with her grandmamma and aunt's schemes, to Kit's responses toward Lady Mary's first meeting with him, also, the joking of Quinn's bachelors' toast of congratulations.Intelligence: Clever, conspiring and caring women within the pages of this novel; grandmammas, maids, cooks, Lady Mary's friends and including Lady Mary, herself.Camaraderie: A jovial sight to see as I read the friendships among the men, the staff of loyal servants, the lasting loving relationship that the grandmothers have, the family bond willing to support each other in times of need, even the community in the village of Rosebury held a special protective bond for Lady Mary.Longing: A wanting for wife and family and a home filled with love. I could empathise with the hero and heroine. especially as Lady Mary planted her rose garden. Then with, Aunt Eunice and Brian's love for each other.Introduction: A pleasure in reading the introducion of secondary characters into play, willing to abet even though they themselves had troubles of their own. Wee vignettes were strategically placed, smoothly interweaved and I was entranced as each new character became involved. Brava for introducing Uncle Hector in a timely and unique manner! And the names of all the characters were refreshing indeed, for I was unfamiliar with the spelling and pronunciation! At first, I did not quite comprehend the title for this novel. I found myself using the author's sentences for a new title, 'This Was Scandel Waiting To Happen' or 'The Perfect Gentleman' then realised Lady Mary's desire in wanting to be kissed.I was inquisitive in the outcome of all the love stories, impatiently reading, coming into more twist and turns. My emotions took the best of me and showed its true colours as I laughed, gotten angry with the cousin and his mother which left me with the question of; if Lady Mary's father made wealthy with the patronage of her uncle then why was her cousin in need of monies. I even cried for Simon and Morna's tragic history. The interaction between relationships left me with an elated, pleasurable feeling! Looking forward to the next novel in this series!Jane Silhouette

But he pursued her because of his mother. Admirable as that may be, it made me question the man's ability to be his own person. I understood his wanting to see his mother happy, but he wasn't responsible for her happiness. She was.Mary's fruitless attempts at thwarting her cousin hadn't been very successful, and running away gets tiring. Her aunt and grandma want to remedy that situation, take her someplace safe where her cousin won't find her. They succeed, but for how long and at what cost? She's posing as the wife of a man she admired, Mr. Perfect as she called him, yet she knows the ruse won't last long. After all, a man like Kit Featherton is sure to question her motives when he discovers what she's doing at his family home.Kit is hardly Mr. Perfect. He's impeccable in his manners and habits and regards toward Mary, but he's flawed like everyone else. He neglected Rose Hill, where Mary's been residing, and has no idea how to tell her how he feels or what he wants from her. Everything he could ever want in a wife is there in Mary's eyes, her arms, but he's slow to even kiss her. Now, Kit's and Mary's grandmas concocted this scheme. Mary's aunt helped them execute it. The road to happiness for some isn't always smooth, and Kit and Mary had their fair share of problems. Aside from Kit assuring his staff at Rose Hill as well as his tenants that he wasn't there to run Mary off, they still had to unravel the mystery of Gawain's whereabouts and why he insisted on marrying Mary. This isn't a spicy story. It's sensuality at its best, a welcome change for this avid reader. I love hot sexy books as much as anyone else I know, but sometimes a girl just needs slow, sweet, and steady. I've not read any other books in this series, but that didn't matter because this is a standalone and reads like a dream. Kit and Mary, along with their family and friends, made this a really enjoyable story. It is slow to start but hang in there. If you do, I hope you like it as much as I did.(Received from NetGalley via Tasty Book Tours for an honest review)

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. ARC REVIEW easy and lovely read By HannahPilar The Marriage Game book 6 by Ella Quinn, A Kiss for Lady Mary is a good read. This is my second for the series and while the other characters are present and active in this story their own personal stories play no part in this one; for the exception of those wonderful meddling grandmas. They claim to have made the matches for all their children and most of their grandchildren, now it is Christopher "Kit" Featherton and Mary Tolliver's turn. One of the things I liked about this book is the fact that it is the sixth book into the series and I didn't feel lost. You get a feel for who the characters are and the method behind their madness or in this case of Kit and Mary their reservedness. I also enjoyed Mary and Kit, it was a nice change of pace from the domineering alpha male. Kit was a proper and reserved gentleman dubbed Mr. Perfect who has a knack for drawing out the wallflowers. Mary, of course, is a strong minded woman who will not settle for anything less than love but is so shy from her lack of exposure to the opposite sex she has no idea what to do.Kit is picky, and very proper, he once saw a beautiful girl out in her first season but too shy to ask for an introduction and a dance. Kit has never been able to get this woman out of his head even three years later. Now as his family is pressuring him to marry he has finally decided to track down the elusive Lady Mary and properly court her. Lady Mary thoroughly enjoyed her first season but was cut short due to the death of her father. For the last three years Mary has been hiding from her cousin Gawain who has been pushing her to marry him and will stop at nothing to have her and her money. Mary's Grandmother hatches a plan to protect Mary until she is old enough to get her trust out of her Uncle's name. For the last year Mary has lived with her Aunt Eunice in a house way out of the way and implying that she is the estranged wife of the landowner. With Gawain getting more persistent and Kit and Mary finally ready to meet again the Grandmothers do their thing. Kit finds out someone is living on one of his properties acting as his wife, angry he rushes up their only to find the one woman he has never been able to forget. Mary is embarrassed, scared and so honest she tells him everything. Kit quickly forgets his anger and starts trying to figure out how to woo her and marry her. Mary doesn't want to be trapped into marriage she wants another season and her own chance to find love.So while Mary and Kit try and figure things out Aunt Eunice falls in love, friends from the past books come to visit to help work out a way to avoid scandal and give everyone what they want. The solution a season in Edinburgh. Kit knows he wants Mary he just has to convince her but they are so hesitant around each other they are sending mixed signals, but all the friends agree Kit needs a little competition to get the nerve to act on his feelings. Also while in Edinburgh ( I swear it's like a freakin' historical soap opera. Woman! you gave me heart palpitations with all this.) a lost love returns and claims the children he could not previously claim. The sub-plots are so enticing and enjoyable it makes up for the fact that the Gawain ending plot is short. I read through this quick and easy and I loved it, I really need to read the others I have missed.

Earia, queen of the elves, has long fought against an enemy she believed she created: a man, Niren, who she raised as her son, over four hundred years ago and he will see every man, elf, and dwarf killed unless they bend a knee to him. The dragons already have, willing or not, and Earia is forced to fight them as well as Niren’s soldiers. Fillip is a seventeen year old, raised in the woods and seashores of the small country of Niss, and he has managed to find the one thing which can give the elves hope against Niren and his dragons. Pursued by assassins, Earia is desperate for Fillip’s help and he is aching for adventure, even danger. Fillip’s younger brother is not so inclined, but what is a brother for, if not to help chase monsters and throw down kings? Earia’s age old companions are quick to accept the youngsters and teach them a thing or two. Fillip soon discovers that he is not the farmer he thought, but a bold adventurer, willing to take mighty risks to see the world and to fight for his new friends.

High fantasy at its finest By Majanka The Stones of Caron is a delightful read featuring elves, dwarves, dragons, and basically every fantasy creature you can think of. The book focuses on Earia, the queen of elves, who fights against an enemy she believes she created, and Fillip, a former boy who holds the one thing that can save the elves from their enemy. It packs a lot of content, and the plot is fast-paced and entertaining from the start.Earia was my favorite character. She was fiesty, stubborn when needed, intelligent, and not afraid to do what she had to do. Her personality changed and developed throughout the book and by the end, she was a lot stronger than she’d been at the start, but still equally engaging. The author masterfully combines several elements like elves, dwarves, prophecies, magic, adventure, and crafts a tale that kept me on the edge of my seat. If you enjoy fantasy, you have to give this book a try. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

It is 1924. After a hasty departure from his previous employer, journalist, David Driscoll, arrives in the Midwest city of St. Luke to start a new job at the town’s foremost newspaper, The Bugle. He wastes no time in looking up his old boyhood friend, and one-time playground protector, Mike Doyle, who has made it big since those school days. Doyle is now a popular politician and leader of the city council. He has power, glamour, and seems to be the kind of man that always gets exactly what he wants. Ever the journalist, Driscoll wants to know exactly how he does it and what is going on behind the scenes, and Doyle could use a newspaper-man on his side at election time. They rekindle their acquaintance as they are both strategically useful for each other. But then things take a turn for the personal as Driscoll gets closer and closer to exposing Doyle as a fraudster. What follows is a cat and mouse game, set across the political and criminal backdrop of Prohibition America in the Midwest, New York and Washington D.C. as each man tries to best the other.

The journey of the two men has many ups and downs, and Doyle is a character that I could never quite figure out. Towards the end I was racing to finish to see what would happen! The book had many good plots, and I was intrigued by the two men and their relationship. It could be bittersweet, funny, and dangerous. I enjoyed the book's plot, the political theme made it a good dramatic story.A must for anyone interested in machine politics, journalism, the 1920s, or just a good story. I enjoyed it to the end.

By Matt Anybody who has had good whispering in one ear and bad whispering in the other ear should give this book a chance. The read is thoroughly enjoyable as characters untie personal history between each other to unveil truth in a political maze of power. Driscoll represents all that is good, but every heroin needs a villain. Doyle is his nemesis and oldest friend. The story gets more and more interesting with every page. You're going to want to open your schedule and pour yourself a cup of coffee because you're not going to want to put the book down.

He also displays sound knowledge of small town America as he follows the lives of David Driscoll, a dedicated newspaper man, and Mike Doyle, a Robin Hood war hero turned politician. Well developed characters take sides on good and evil as America emerges victorious from the Great War only to have to battle the Depression, Prohibition and the small town violence that followed.Let's hope that Matlin will treat us to another good story before long.....

The story is told from the viewpoint of Hannah, the only daughter of an upper middle class family, who has three brothers. The plot unfolds largely through dialogue which is very well handled and captures the speech rhythms of the characters without being stilted. It depicts a time of unrest in provincial England when the Royalists and Parliamentarians are fighting and even peaceful farming folk are drawn into the conflict.

In the days preceding the War of 1812, his pirate ship swoops down on English frigates in tropical seas, and he takes what he wishes. But he meets his match in Miss Rebecca Talbot of Washington. Pirate falls for harpy heroine (Spoiler) By Melissa The best thing to happen to Rebecca in years is when she and her sister are captured by the pirate Raven as they crossed the sea to England. To protect her younger sister, Rebecca offers herself to the Raven. She will be his mistress for the voyage if he leaves her sister alone. The Raven, Brendan, keeps Rebecca in his cabin but tells her he does not want an unwilling woman. As time passes the two do become intimate and Rebecca falls in love with him. He shares a little of his life and she tells him of her past which includes a doomed love affair. She also has a horrible relationship with her father who has never forgiven her for her affair. When Rebecca's father pays her ransom, she goes willing back with him even though he almost strikes her and calls her a slut. The Raven asks her to stay with him but Rebecca, ever the martyr, says her father needs her.*Spoiler* A year later, Rebecca is back in Washington D.C. and mourning the loss of Raven. Authorities reported that his ship was destroyed. She meets a man from Baltimore who looks a lot like Raven and gasp, he is, but it takes her ever so long to figure it out. She is furious with him. In fact, anger and unforgiveness are her two dominate traits.War with England is approaching and she suspects that Brand is not all he appears to be. She is still devoted to her mean spirited father and why Brand would ever want her is beyond me. I felt sorry for this man. He deserved a better heroine, someone who would love him more than an abusive father. Rebecca is fickle and loyalty to anyone outside her family is beyond her capabilities. This book rates a one star therefore, due to the starchy, unbending heroine

The heroin is kidnapped by the pirate sleeps with him for a couple of weeks, touches every part of him falls in love. The hero's only disguise is a freaking eye patch!!!!!!!!!!!!then is rescued. A year later the pirate appears with a diffrent name and minus a eye patch and she does not know it is him and then the story just went on and on and oni could not even finish it, so i don't know what happend at the end hopefully everyone died if not from the plot then from nonesense cause that is what this is.

By Tj This book started out improbable then went from bad to worse. The heroine's father is verbally and emotionally abusive but she feels she must tolerate it as she loves him and is sure he loves her -which he doesnt.Hence, she gives up the man she loves TWICE for her father who treats her as worse than a slave! Not acceptable!No-one should be feel guilt tripped into tolerating in a situation of domestic violence and his book deserves one star due to its promoting this very mistaken view.

The complete trilogy combined into the original critically acclaimed novel.

Silver, they call it, the light of the full moon: celestial magic that changes men into beasts and calls the dead from their graves...and young men to their destinies.

Billy Cole is the son of legendary folk hero Ian the Black. He should be marching to war, battling dragons, and rescuing fair maidens. Unfortunately for him, the war is long over, the last dragon was slain by the Dread Duke, and all the girls in Redfield are either several years younger than him or already married. Billy is 16 springs old and ready for a life of valor and excitement. So far, however, he seems destined only for boredom and manual labor in a small farm town.

Then a scarecrow tries to kill him, and a monster of swamp water and vines trudges into town and attacks his father. Evil has risen from the Blood Marsh, and Redfield needs a hero.

And while Billy has the brass to take on an entire army alone, he's smart enough to know better. Instead he straps on the sword of Trevor the Red and takes the name Wil Thunderstrike - wandering hero and teller of tales - to venture into the Free Fertile Lands and find the help they need.

But the world beyond Redfield isn't like in the tavern tales, and not everyone who carries a sword is a hero.

Tarnish is a grittier, more adult coming-of-age tale than you're used to, where destiny is forged, not written.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This was a surprisingly excellent fantasy coming of age story By AudioBook Reviewer Tarnish by J.D. Brink is the first in a fantasy series called The Thunderstrike Saga. This start to a coming of age saga follows Billy Cole as he leaves his small town of Redfield to become an epic hero like those he heard about in tavern stories. The son of and mentored by legendary heroes, he has a lot to live up to. When Redfield is threatened from unknown and magical threats, Bill Cole volunteers for a quest to find help, having been inspired by the heroes of his town. As he faces the dangerous life on the road, he must figure out a way to get help for his home town while maintaining his sense of self and honor. Through this quest, Billy Cole hopes to turn into William Thunderstrike, his alter hero ego. This was a surprisingly excellent fantasy coming of age story. There are two simultaneous storylines. One follows Billy Cole as he embarks on his quest. The other follows the characters in his home town as they deal with increasingly dangerous magical attacks. Both storylines are exciting in different ways. While the action in Redfield is driven by the attacks on the residents, much of the storyline is about the politics of the town. Billy Cole’s adventures are more exciting. He interacts with a diverse cast of characters some of whom are easy to hate, easy to love, and easy to not be sure about. One interesting aspect of this novel was the frequent telling of tavern stories. Throughout the novel, especially the first half, different characters tell epic stories about legends to crowds in taverns. This is so frequent that the plot seems to travel from one tavern tale to the next. But somehow, it works. And these tales tie into the rest of the plot well and help add background to many of the characters. Billy Cole’s coming of age is gradual and he is flawed, which allows his growth to be visible as the story continues. The magical aspects of the novel are for the most part tied to land around Redfield. This part of the novel was unexpected for me and I thought that it was interesting and mystical. Overall, I thought the storyline and the characters were engaging and exciting with good pacing. The narration by Todd Menesses was excellent. He voiced the characters well and consistently. At times, I felt that he spoke a little too fast because I would miss some of the words, but mostly it was great. The production quality was good as well. I would recommend this story to readers who like fantasy coming of age stories.Audiobook was provided for review by the narrator. Please find this complete review and many others at my review blog[If this review helped, please press YES. Kepley Full Disclosure: I received this book as a Goodreads First Reads novel!I bought myself a digital copy anyway, just so I could keep reading it when not at home!I loved this book. I was all prepared for some long-winded, drawn-out, fantasy rehash and was completely flattened by how clean and original the writing felt. It's told in the first person by a young man, and the kid could as well be my own brother. He's very easy to relate to, a very real person. The other characters are as well, in the general sense. There are, of course, some larger-than- life characters, but that's to be expected. The storyline was exciting and kept you thinking. Multiple point-of-view threads kept the storytelling fresh and really helped in making the characters personable. I LOVED Brink's storytelling mechanism: the TALES interwoven with the story. As plot devices they were a great way to update the reader on decades of history (taken with a grain of storyteller's salt). Plus, they were really entertaining and interesting. There are multiple typos throughout the book, but they're not so awful that you get distracted form the story.I saw another title by J.D. Brink "The Prince of Luster and Decay" starring a soldier named Jacob Knox... If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go find that book now.

A young man leaves on a quest to get help for his village which has come under attack from strange creatures. The theme is classic but Brink does a remarkable job capturing the mentality of a boy on the cusp of manhood. Anyone who has made that painful, awkward transition can feel the authenticity of young Wil’s emotions, ranging from the unshakable confidence and feeling of immortality, to troubled self examination. I can’t remember ever reading a book which captured that transition better than Brink has with Billy Cole’s transformation to Wil Thunderstrike. The world Brink has created is rich and detailed, well drawn with enough backstory to give the setting depth, but not so much as to be overwhelming. I was impressed with the world, and I’d like to see more of it.My only criticism is the plot and pacing. It tends to meander, and there’s a lot that could be tightened up. Places where I wasn’t really sure where it was headed. Not a suspenseful “what’s going to happen next?” but a perplexing “where are we going with this?”I think the voice and the setting carries the story through. I will confess that my patience can be bought with voice, but I found this book well worth the time spent reading it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting read By Barb Pond At first this book is all over the place. I had a hard time keeping focused because part of the first chapter doesn't stay in one place very long. It starts talking about one thing and all of a sudden it changes to something else and then again to something else. But after awhile it finally calms down where I could follow it.What would it be like to be Harry Houdini and live his life? Well the author does a pretty good job of making you see what it would be like. I found out a few solutions to his tricks that I never knew but I also knew there was a way to get out of the tricks he did, just wasn't sure how all the time. This not only lets you live in his body and life but it also lets you see how his wife and him really were not on the same page. I'm sure they loved each other but his wife wanted other things that Harry evidently didn't let her have or try.Over all this is a good story. Besides the beginning, the writing flowed ok but the description of somethings could have been better, in my opinion. It did seem the author did some research on Houdini and that is a good thing for a book like this. I would probably read another book from this author if given the opportunity.

I buy books from new authors from time to time and have had some good luck with that and some bad. This was one of those good luck endings! I bought Gone and Forgotten on a whim because it showed up as a book I may like when I made my last purchase. I am I glad I did! The book had some funny parts, some fascinating parts, some sad parts, and I learned some new things. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story that has some twists and includes a bit of history. It starts off a bit slow but soon becomes a page turner and overall I am glad I bought it and read it. It is a wonderful fictional story that is both entertaining and thought provoking.

It is set in present day with many stories from the past blended in as the tale winds through Virginia, Louisiana, Missouri, and Arizona. Having personal connections to rural Virginia, I especially enjoyed that part of the book. There are interesting stories with history to be learned. Readers will appreciate the ease and expertise with which the author covers the narrative.I was glad to see that the author uses the Oxford comma, a style that is lacking in many current publications. What impressed me most was that I could never have predicted the outcome. If you like historical fiction, this is your book. Looking forward to the sequel with great anticipation.

If you are a history buff you will enjoy this fictional story that is woven with historical facts. The fictional part of the story is some what of a mystery that keeps you pulled in until the last page. Even though there is an end to this book, the author has left it open for a possible follow up to this story. I look forward to the next adventures of Doc and Daisy!
