"This deeply enjoyable journey to Liavek will be of interest to longtime fans and newcomers alike."—PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Two stalwarts of science fiction combine to pen a dazzling set of stories wild and whimsical, thrilling and powerful. Liavek is a hot, busy trade city, situated on the southern shore of the Sea of Luck at the mouth of the Cat River. In Liavek, magic is based on one’s “birth luck” and the length of time one’s mother was in labor. Everyone has luck, but using it is another matter. Luck, or magic, must be invested annually in some object outside oneself; only then can it be used to power spells. And investing one’s magic is difficult and dangerous. Prospective magicians who fail find their magic draining away, and with it, their life. From that mad and wonderful seed, Wrede and Dean create an enthralling set of stories, where a god is trapped in the body of a chipmunk, where a play has the potential to incite a riot and change a nation, and where a family is coming apart at the seams, and going to enormous lengths to stitch itself back together. All of the stories are tied together by the unforgettable character of Granny, Ka’Riatha—the one the Book of Curses calls the Guardian of the S’Rian Gods. Granny moves through each story, casting spells and bringing her tart brand of wisdom to a world come undone. This spellbinding set is perfect for fans of both titans of the genre, and will bring equal parts thrilled gasps and charmed smiles to readers everywhere.

Review "This deeply enjoyable journey to Liavek will be of interest to longtime fans and newcomers alike."―PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

About the Author For more than twenty years, Patricia C. Wrede (b. 1953) has expanded the boundaries of young-adult fantasy writing. Her first novel, Shadow Magic (1982), introduced Lyra, a magical world in which she set four more novels. Her other series include the Enchanted Forest Chronicles; the Cecelia and Kate novels, co-written with Caroline Stevermer; the Mairelon books, which take place in Regency England; and the Old-West Frontier Magic series. Wrede lives and works in MinnesotaPamela Dean is the author of The Secret Country trilogy (The Secret Country, The Hidden Land, and The Whim of the Dragon); Tam Lin; The Dubious Hills; Juniper, Gentian, and Rosemary; and a handful of short stories. She was born in the Midwest of the USA, and aside from a few aberrant periods spent in upstate New York and Massachusetts, she has stubbornly remained there. She attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, which in a somewhat altered state is the setting for her novel Tam Lin. She lives in a cluttered duplex in Minneapolis with her chosen family and a variable number of cats. She enjoys hiking, gardening, cooking, reading, being a part of local science-fiction fandom, and attending the theater. She understands that writers are supposed to have colorful careers, but on the whole she prefers as quiet a life as the family and the cats will permit.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. old favourites and some fantastic new ones By atalanta Liavek fans will find they have read most of these excellent tales before - but it is worth getting this for the new stories. I found myself reading them all from the start, the new ones fell seamlessly into place. Lovely work.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Short stories with a difference. By Sharlane Jarvis Wonderful concept for a book. Five like minded authors get together and design a world that has all the essentials for a great story - chocolate, good coffee and magic! Then they write their own stories based in this land, Liavek and use each other's characters. This is a collection of short stories by two very talented writers that reads more like a novel than a collection of stories. Very enjoyable. I want to visit this place again!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Hurrah for Liavek! By K. Worthington I heard about the Liavek stories many, many years ago, but unlike the Bordertown anthologies, I was never able to find these books. Many of my favourite authors participated in creating these books. So when I found this one, I bought it without a moment's hesitation. It was fantastic! The stories were nicely interwoven, the characters were fascinating, and the plot moved along nicely. I truly hope more tales from the city of Liavek are published for kindle. I want more!!
