By phironsjr I found Dan Appleman's books incredibly useful and insightful when I was working in Visual Basic Classic (VB6). The same when I moved to Java and the trend continues as I've moved to Salesforce. I picked up something I used at work in chapter 1.

It is the first book you read, and you will keep going back to it. I recommend a paper copy v. the kindle personally. I went with the e-book, and ended up ordering a second paperback version.
