A new life and a new name … House of Rocamora, a novel of the 17th century, continues the exceptional life of roguish Vicente de Rocamora, a former Dominican friar, confessor to the Infanta of Spain, and almost Inquisitor General. After Rocamora arrives in Amsterdam at age forty-two, asserts he is a Jew, and takes the name, “Isaac,” he revels in the freedom to become whatever he chooses for the first time in his life. Rocamora makes new friends, both Christian and Jew, including scholars, men of power and, typically, the disreputable. He also acquires enemies in the Sephardic community who believe he is a spy for the Inquisition or resent him for having been a Dominican. As Isaac Israel de Rocamora, he studies Medicine at Leyden and, at age forty-six, receives a license to practice. That same year Rocamora weds twenty-five year old Abigail Touro, and together they raise a large family. During his time in Amsterdam, Rocamora has a bizarre encounter with Rembrandt, serves the House of Orange as physician, and advises Spinoza before the philosopher’s excommunication. He survives a murder attempt, learns from the great English physician Harvey, and a surprise visit from a childhood friend leads to an unusual business venture. Life is never routine or dull for Rocamora. The intrigues start with his arrival in Amsterdam and do not end until he takes his last breath. Praise for Rocamora, 2012 Finalist International Book Awards: “Rocamora is the best historical novel I have read, a fascinating story, well written with vividly portrayed unforgettable characters.” —Christiane Engel, MD, PhD, concert pianist, and member Board of Directors of her grandfather Albert Schweitzer's Hospital in Lambarene, Gabon “You have a fine historical novel.” —Barnaby Conrad, author of Matador, Manolete, and The Second Life of John Wilkes Booth

By larryG This sequel like the first is astounding as to historical accuracy and the exploits of the characters, most of whom are fictional...I can't applaud the author enough who has a pedigree miles long in academia and authorship...What a TV series these 2 books would make. This is a sequel to the well received [[ASIN: ASIN Rocamaora: Man of Masks ]].After escaping from Spain, Vicente de Rocamara decided to settle in Amersterdam, one of the few places he could practice his newly found Jewish religion. Settling in Holland, Vicente changed his name to Isaac and decided to achieve his lifelong dream of becoming a practicing medical doctor and starting a family.House of Rocamora by Donald Michael Platt might not be as exciting as its predecessor (meaning there is no castle intrigue or daring escapes from under the Inquisition's nose) however the account of the daily life of Isaac (previously Vicente de Rocamora) is just as an engrossing read. The book creates a vivid picture of the Jewish community in Amsterdam. It was very interesting to read how the Jews lived and interacted with each other and the Dutch people at the time. The protagonist has become Jewish but not an observant Jew and the community somewhat resents him for that, add that to the fact that he was a priest and even considered for the post of head of the Spanish Inquisition and you can understand their mistrust. This is an excellent companion to Rocamora: Man of Masks, however I don't feel this is a standalone book. I enjoyed this book very much, but I don't think I would have enjoyed as much if I didn't read the previous book. The historical aspects and accuracy of the book are fascinating, intriguing and as far as I can tell accurate. The characters are three dimensional and realistic. Mr. Pratt had imagined an amazing life for an amazing man, not much is known about Vicente de Rocamora, later to be known as Isaac Rocamora (you can view the entry in the Jewish Encyclopedia).

By Cynthia McArthur House of Rocamora is the continuing story of Vicente de Rocamora, former confessor to the Royal House of Spain and former candidate for Inquisitor General, now an exiled and self-circumcised Jew named Isaac.Vicente has left Spain in his long journey to find himself and peace for his soul. He has lost all he holds dear and must start anew. He has traveled to Amsterdam in 1643, seeking to find a broad-minded society and to study his true calling, medicine. Although many question his desire to start a new career in his forties, they are also flattered to be acquainted with such an illustrious person and impressed by his intelligence and intensity. As years pass, Isaac de Rocamora does find a measure of harmony in his career and new family, but as with everything in his long life, tragedy intertwines with fulfillment, and at the last he finds himself again seeking his soul's peace. This book is well-written, though it is a bit slow in the beginning, as Isaac is still unclear about his true path and does some wandering. It will help the reader to have read the first book in this series, Rocamora, to understand the impact of events happening in the early sections of this novel. The story picks up as Isaac begins to see his way and put his plans and ideas into action. I enjoyed both books in the series and look forward to the next, which I hope is not too long in coming. My review courtesy of the Historical Novel Society.
