Ray Moore has provided us with a delightful collection of engaging mysteries built around an intriguing, uniquely clever, low key --decidedly British --detective/vicar/wise elder. The Reverend Lyle Thorne, as revealed to us through his friend, Knowles, solves a variety of puzzling crimes, murders, and embedded riddles that keep the reader guessing and trying to keep ahead of Thorne's Dr. Watson-like "straight man", Inspector Cummings. If you are looking for a mystery with international terrorist plots and lots of gun-play, heroic/revenge violence (e.g., James Bond thrillers), this is not your choice. But, this refreshing, intelligent, thought provoking and down to earth series of stories can both entertain and challenge the reader as well as provide a setting that is charming and different for American readers, like me. The setting is also historical. ranging in time from the late 1800's through the late 1940's. I enthusiastically recommend this change of pace, smart set of short stories -- readable one at a time when one has a break for lunch or a chance for a desirable distraction; or the tales can of course be read one after the other for a variety of puzzles and intrigues. I especially liked the introductory quotations, from well known literary and other sources, that introduce each story and a theme that the story captures.

Here are five more tales about the investigative exploits of retired British clergyman, Lyle Thorne, narrated by Reginald Knowles, his associate in the church and assistant in pinpointing the perpetrating criminal. If you've read any of the previous four collections, you'll find these mysteries equally enthralling. If you're about to discover this intriguing, voluntary sleuth for the first time, you're opening yourself to becoming a fan who'll want the entire collection. Thorne's success lies in his exceptional ability to see what others don't, to exclude the irrelevant, and maximize the rational power of the human mind. In this fashion, the criminal is put to a disadvantage. Here is reading that entertains as it informs and enlightens.

In his elderly years By Dianne Fancher Final Investigations of the Reverend Lyle Throne is another book in a series that continues to provide interesting reading to those who like mysteries. In his elderly years, due to his well deserved reputation, Reverend Thorne is still approached to help with cases when the solution is elusive to the local inspector. More background is revealed about a supporting character, Reginald Knowles, that helps the reader appreciate his important role in the content of these cases being passed on years after the Reverend Thorne was involved. The reader will continue to be in awe of Reverend Thorne's keen observation abilities, especially when we miss the significance of information that he always seems to notice.David Fancher
