The main character Ashmole Foxe is at face value a bookseller but appearances are deceptive. There is more to Ashmole Foxe then first appears.I thought that the mystery component of this novel to be well executed and quite detailed. The cast of supporting characters were well portrayed. I didn't have an inkling as to who the culprit would be until well into the story. I also thought that the times were well depicted and historically accurate. Very much enjoyed the description of Norwich during the period and some insight into the Guild's of the time. Well worth a look at.

Although this author is new to me and seems to be new to the public his writing is very good, worthy of better known authors, and I well appreciate it. The characters are full depth and likable. I really did care what happened to them. The story is complex but consistent in its progression so not confusing to the reader. However, if you are a dedicated murder mystery fan you will guess who is behind the murder somewhere around midway to two thirds through the book. This will make no difference though as the writing and characters are that good that you will keep reading and enjoying every chapter. The time period and setting is described by other reviewers so I will only concur with them and not elaborate here. The only flaw, as is typical with many Kindle books, are the typos. Whether self or mass published they seem to be rampant in Kindle books but even this did not deter me as I enjoyed the writing that much. Beware though that one chronic typo throughout the book is the use of the word "than". You will see it over and over again typed as "that" so after a bit you'll learn to automatically change it to "than" without dropping your reading tempo. It's this type of typo along with a few others, not too much in all, that may distract some readers. The main character, Ashmole Foxe, is a delight in his covert deceptions although serious when needs be. His friends are equally unique with appeals of their own. I look forward to the next installment in what I am hoping is a series.

He looks every bit the English gent; a wealthy bachelor at that, but there's more to this mystery man, underneath the facade he has carefully created. The story takes an interesting turn when a cloth merchant is murdered. Can Mr Foxe solve the crime and save the day? Or is he somehow involved? A cozy mystery with a few twists along the way, leading to a satisfying conclusion.William Savage has also written 'An Unlamented Death' another murder mystery set in Norfolk, England, however both stories can be read as standalone books. Well worth the read.
