I was initially sceptical as I haven't had much experience with new authors and the ones that I have had prior I did not enjoy. This book, however, pleasantly surprised me. I'm not a great reviewer and haven't given any reviews before but I believe that James deserves a strong recommendation. Here are my thoughts:- I very much enjoy James' writing style. While he does use big words and definitely spends time to convey the mood, setting and atmosphere, he doesn't go overboard with the poetry. I'm the type who likes to skip whole pages in books that spend time talking about how beautiful a dew drop from a green leaf on a warm sunny morning blah blah blah. I did not skip a single paragraph in this book. Every word has its place and in no way was he overindulgent unlike many other popular authors- The world he built seems unique and very robust. He even has an entire religion, language and hours of the day in there! I was quite impressed by the world laid out.- The main characters are interesting and well developed (The side characters less so). This book poses more questions than answers for me with relation to these main characters so I guess I'll need to wait for the sequel.- The only part I've struggled with this book is the sheer amount of dreams within dreams and the protagonist's confusion between what's real and what's not. It was only after I completed the book that I decided the bulk of the book was not about the protagonist's history, but his present, as who he is today was not a result of what actually happened, but what he remembered. And given his memory was a mess, the book, at some parts, came across as such. The epilogue helped finally to convey the idea that the dreams were not meant to entirely be logical, which helped me with swallowing the whole thing. On the bright side, it seems like we should expect no further dreams in sequels (HOPEFULLY!) so future books should be easier reads. Heh.All in all, a great introduction to an interesting new world and a look into a very-confused mind of a hero/anti-hero that I'm looking forward to finding more about in future books!
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good stuff. By Ville Meriläinen Blackcloak is a complicated book. That's not a euphemism for having issues, as I feel it fully deserves four stars. Rather, the manner of storytelling leaves me uncertain whether I've understood everything I read. Without going into detail to avoid spoilers, there was a constant nagging feeling that not everything was as it seemed, to the point where I wondered if I was doubly misled with things I *knew* weren't as they seemed. That feeling never went away, even when answers to old questions emerged. This is praise rather than a complaint, as that uncertainty was the driving force pushing me through the story--and it well emulated the progress of the protagonist's growth, both in character and knowledge.The world-building has been praised by other reviewers already, and I'll join the choir: The snippets of history and mythology embedded in the story were some of my favourite parts. The prose is very (very) verbose, at times to the point of being cumbersome--but more often it is gorgeous, particularly in anything regarding Ephriem. On a related note, although it's a personal pet peeve of mine when authors come up with their own curses, it's worth a mention that it's actually done in a clever fashion here. I don't have to love it to give a disgruntled approval.Overall, Blackcloak is almost five star material, particularly for a self-published work. The detracting factors were darlings in need of killing still left on the pages, which became distracting at times (although, given the nature of the book, some of these might've been clues I simply overlooked). Even so, it's a good read with an interesting story in an interesting world, and it's probably going to teach you a few new words.

Glory Descends the Dark Slopes of Madness By Axonn Echysttas Once embarked upon Wong Shah-Long’ journey, I thought I’m reading a fantasy novel written in a highly artistic fashion – and by this I mean that the mental images that the author projects inside our minds are of amazing detail and power. As the novel develops, however, an altogether more fascinating exploration begins, one that concerns consciousness and the nature of reality.Witnessing Dog Ears’ descent unto the darkest slopes of madness is fascinating and, in a way, humbling. The ecstasy of victory is sometimes just around the corner, tempting us to read just a few more pages. Often, though, the composer of this symphony of words has other plans in mind, and the narrative takes yet another unexpected turn, shoving the reader’s mind mercilessly down an unexpected corridor of thought.Sometimes the novel’s intricacy is overwhelming, demanding an increased level of attention to detail. This could potentially work against it when confronted with superficial readers. In other words, this is not your Sunday beach fun novel, but rather the cozy quiet evening when you want to phase-out from this planet and enter another plane of existence.There are all the markings of a great epic here, and I can’t wait for the second volume!There is blood on a leaf.
