When Maud Marsh flings herself into George Bevan's cab in Piccadilly, he starts believing in damsels in distress. George traces his mysterious travelling companion to Belpher Castle, home of Lord Marshmoreton, where things become severely muddled. Maud's aunt, Lady Caroline Byng, wants Maud to marry Reddie, her stepson. Maud, meanwhile, is known to be in love with an unknown American she met in Wales. So when George turns up speaking American, a nasty case of mistaken identity breaks out. In fact the scene is set for the perfect Wodehouse comedy of errors.

A Damsel in Distress, by P.G. Wodehouse

Review "The very definition of British humor . . . and as Overlook continues its reissue of these absurd souffles, you can buy the work for yourself in suave hardcover volumes, the dust jackets as natty as the prose."

About the Author P. G. Wodehouse was born in England in 1881 and in 1955 became an American citizen. He published more than ninety books and had a successful career writing lyrics and musicals in collaboration with Jerome Kern, Guy Bolton, and Cole Porter, among others. No Bio

From AudioFile Good gad! Belpher Castle is a-dither with romance and intrigue. Wodehouse's usual twits are in full cry as they leap about the manicured landscape. And hovering close in the background are the ever-vigilant, poisonous aunts who spend their entire lives being aghast. There's plenty to be aghast about when the lord of the manor falls madly in love with an actress (huge intake of breath) named (another huge intake) Billie. Reader Frederick Davidson portrays each character perfectlyÐsorting them out for the listener. His portrayal of Reggie, the wealthy and earnest American composer, is wonderful, and the womenÐingenues and auntsÐare very sweet or dragonish, depending. Along the way, listeners learn never to throw rice at weddingsÐit's worse than shrapnel. Quite. B.V. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Doran, and then in the U.K. on October 17, 1919 by Herbert Jenkins, and it is a splendid example of early Wodehouse. This edition is part of The Collector's Wodehouse series being released by The Overlook Press (in the U.K. it is The Everyman's Wodehouse series from Everyman's Library). As with many Wodehouse classics, this one includes a collection of colorful characters, a complex love story involving many characters, and of course the happy ending where everything works out. It is the story of an American Composer, George Bevan, who falls in love with Maud (The Earl of Marshmoreton's daughter). Maud is already in love with another American, Geoffrey Raymond, who she met in Wales the previous year. Her brother and aunt, Lord Belpher and Lady Caroline Byng oppose her getting involved with the American and want her to marry someone from her social class. There are more characters as well, including some servants, Lady Caroline's son Reggie, Lord Marshmoreton's secretary Alice Faraday, and an acquaintance of George's Billie Dore who is in the Chorus of George's latest musical comedy. As with most Wodehouse stories, the plot is very complicated, and attempts to describe it in detail would fail to do it justice. It does involve a case of mistaken identity, a pool among the servants on who will marry Maud, and several characters finding their loves. Overall this is a very good example of a classic Wodehouse story, and it is well worth reading.

Screwball Comedy Wodehouse Style By Gord Wilson Just today I was making a list of the best-written bits in Wodehouse, and Damsel in Distress topped the list. Gracie Allen of Burns and Allen fame starred in an old black-and-white film based from this book and cast in the Billy Wilder screwball comedy vein. Arguably this book may not top the PGW cannon--nearly everyone would have a Jeeves, Mulliner or Drones book at the pinnacle of great reading--but it does contain some of the most delightful passages in Wodehouse. The movie falls far short of the book simply because it was made when "All Singing, All Dancing"--(and no plot) was considered a good review for a movie. Any number of PGW novels critique and lampoon his experiences in Hollywood, but seeing the film first and then reading the book, one might be pleasantly surprised. For me, this novel holds up as one of the best non-Jeeves stories, others being French Leave and The Girl On the Boat.

Love feast By Jason Dejoannis George Bevan, burgeoning young american musical composer, fancies himself a knight-in-shining-armor when in the middle of Piccadily Circus a fair maiden flings herself into his cab to escape the obese pursuit of the dragon - her brother Percy, heir to the family title and vigilant protector of the family name. Our hero's fair lady Maud does indeed live trapped within the tower of Castle Belpher to which he repairs in swift pursuit of happiness.George will face grim prospects in scheming servants, an evil aunt, a kindly but aunt-dominated Lord Marshmoreton and worst of all the fact that Maud is in love with another. The whole setting has obvious similarities to Blandings for those familiar with the Lord Emsworth stories. I wasn't roaring with laughter, but I was attached to the characters and couldn't put the book down. It is hard to say which book is a good introduction to Wodehouse because they are all so good!

Forced to betray her lord, a disgraced samurai fights to regain her honor

In the fabled land of Naipon, there is no warrior more feared, no samurai more respected than the legendary Tomoe Gozen. Her twin blades can change the course of any battle. After years of service to Lord Shigeno, she is about to renew her oath of loyalty when the sky darkens and a cry of rebellion comes from the hills. Possessed by an evil wizard, the peasants are marching against their master. Tomoe holds off the wave of pitchfork-wielding farmers for as long as she can. Finally the battle overwhelms her, and the greatest samurai in Naipon falls dead.

She awakes in hell, on a slope lined with bloody corpses. After an eternity of fighting, she reaches the summit and finds herself in the chamber of a wizard who restores her to life. She is alive - but now she must do his bidding. Her honor has been shattered, but Tomoe Gozen will do whatever it takes to win it back.

Among the Very Best By A Customer THE DISFAVORED HERO is a martial fantasy set in Naipon, a blend of historical twelfth century Japan and the world of Japanese myth and legend. The story chronicles the adventures of the lady samurai Tomoe Gozen, who engages in action aplenty, but also has a rich and complex inner life. If all this is not enough, there are moments of beauty so piercing as to leave you aching. Nor can I close without mentioning the wonderful cover art and interior illustrations by Wendy Wees. They will surely enhance your reading pleasure and stimulate your imagination.

Salmonson is better than your favorite fantasy author. :) By A Customer In my opinion, Salmonson is among the five *best* fantasy authors of all time. In this particular oh-so-bloody-hard-to-put-down series, she writes of a female samurai's adventures in feudal Japan--a Japan replete with all of Japan's traditional magicks and supernatural creatures--in a completely believable, serious, and captivating manner. If you've a love of Japanese animation, or Japanese culture in general, or if you are one of the fantasy readers that is finding most fantasy is too juvenile for you nowadays (try Beagle also!), give her a try.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A well-written story about a woman samurai By Katherine M. Lawrence Reviewed on April 7, 2015: Jessica Amanda Salmonson's three book "Tomoe Gozen" series, plus "The Harmonious Battle," a short story from the author's "A Silver Thread of Madness," which continued part of the series, are not to be missed by people who like women heroes, especially female samurai. Set in a sort of parallel universe, Salmonson paints a world where the creatures and beings of Japanese mythology live side-by-side with humans. Thus Tomoe fights tengu, meets ghosts, and descends into the Land of Roots--the underworld--to achieve her aims, including fighting a great beast blindfolded for reasons that become clear in the plot.Tomoe is a vassal of a woman daimyo (sometime translated as "lord,"or in the case of a woman a "lady"). Thus the rarity of a woman warrior is made even rarer by that warrior serving a woman of the aristocracy. I do not wish to give any spoilers, but there is plenty of action as the main character fights for her honor, independence, integrity, and her loyalty to the lady she serves. The writer has a strong voice, a good sense of pacing, and delivers the story arc in a satisfying way over the three book series. originally published in the early 1980s, the story is as fresh and engaging as it ever was.I highly recommend this series to all those who like a strong, independent, female action hero.

About the Author I came naturally by my yen to wander far places, physical, imaginary, and spiritual... -"Win Blevins" Win Blevins, of Cherokee, Irish and Welsh descent, is from a family that was on the move, always west. Win's childhood was spent roaming, his dad a railroad man. Win went to school in St. Louis, and the family spent summers in little towns along the tracks of the railroads. He listened to the whistles blow at night and wanted to go wherever the trains went.Seldom has a young man been in more of a hurry. Using scholarships, Win ran through a succession of colleges, receiving his master's degree, with honors, in English from Columbia University. He taught at Purdue University and Franklin College, then received a fellowship to attend USC. Win became a newspaperman - a music, theater, and film critic for both major Los Angeles papers. In 1972 he took the big leap-he quit his job to write out his passions-exploring and learning wild places-full time. His greatest passion of all has been to set the stories of these places, their people and animals, colors and smells, into books.Win climbed mountains for ten years. A fluke blizzard caught him on a mountaintop and froze his feet, an end to climbing mountains, but not to exploring them. He's rafted rivers in the west, particularly the Snake and the San Juan, and was briefly a river guide. His love of the great Yellowstone River gave him a fine appreciation for the people who first loved these wild places. Along the way, Win lost the use of his legs and learned to sail, deciding a boat was a good place for a man without legs. He regained the use of his legs, and maintains his love of the open seas. His first book, "Give Your Heart to the Hawks", is still in print after thirty years. Other works include "Stone Song", a novel about Crazy Horse, for which he won the 1996 Mountains and Plains Booksellers Award and the 1996 Spur Award. He's written 15 books, including a Dictionary of the American West, numerous screenplays and magazine articles. He lives quietly in the canyon country of Utah. His passions grow with time-his wife Meredith, the center of his life, their five kids and grandkids. Classical music, baseball, roaming red rock mesas in the astonishing countryside, playing music He considers himself blessed to be one of the people creating new stories about the west, and is proud to call himself a member of the world's oldest profession-storyteller.

Dumbest story I've ever read By A Customer This book rates a "1" because .2 was not an option on Amazon's scale. The book's title is a misnomer leading to great disappointment for anyone hoping to read about the Snake River. Billed as "historical novel," these words rely on name dropping of only two historical figures as very minor characters in this story.Missing a great opportunity to tell of dangers and adventures (geographic, social and political) faced by pioneers traversing the Oregon Trail, the author studiously avoided anything exciting and/or intellectual. Stuffed with comic-book cliches, and romances with predictable misunderstandings and resolutions the reader is caused to discard this writing as the work of a frustrated student of English 101 who prays the prof. will at least count the number of words as worthy of a "C". This is a real page-burner.

No one understood the Vision, least of all Lishi, who dreamed the terror of two wolves. But on the morning of the Great Mammoth Hunt, two real, flesh-and-blood wolves crossed Lishi's path, snarling at her with deadly intent. It was no dream. This meeting with vicious fanged creatures began a chain of events that would change Lishi's life, and all of Neandertal culture, setting a new course for humankind.

Fire Wolf is the story of humanity's greatest achievement, the single act that led to agriculture, the first cities, the first words chiseled into stone. Fire Wolf offers a compelling picture of the way life must have been for the first humans, living every day at the precarious edge between survival and extinction. This is a living, breathing novel, pulsing with conflict between rival factions within Neandertal society, with clashing dreams and fears and destinies, and all of it playing out against the looming threat of the invading Others: The Bear People, whom the Tasfit call the 'Half-Faced Men'--the people we know as Homo sapiens sapiens: Modern Humans.

Based on the latest research in human evolution, including thousands of primary, peer-reviewed articles in the major archeology, paleontology, and paleoanthropology journals, with guidance and input from world leaders in the study of early Human and Neandertal culture, Fire Wolf brings the Neandertal world to life in vivid scenes of hunting and death, violence and defeat, wonder and excitement, destiny and dream. You will find yourself shocked at the complexity of social interaction. You will succumb to cherished characters' hopes and desires, you will feel sadness as innocents suffer desolation and loss.

This is a story you will never forget, for it is our story, the first story, the tale of our true selves as living, breathing, desiring, hope-filled human beings. Bring the wolves!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Elaborate Saga of Neanderthal Times By Archaeologist Novel of Mousterian Neanderthal times. Somewhere in E Europe, the small tribes of Neanderthals live by hunting. Young Lishi becomes a woman and a prophet in one clan; in another, the young hunter Girrt becomes a leader, but his forbidden love for a sister and his arrogance set up destructive forces. Lishi emerges as the focal heroine. Her obscure visions and force of character make her a “prophet” in spite of youth and inexperience. Toward the end of the story, Lishi encounters the “Half-Faced People” the dark skinned, browless modern Homo sapiens, setting up a plot for the next book in a planned long series. Moore is a better-than-average writer with a definite and imaginative vision of his Neanderthals, backed by extensive research. There is a lengthy illustrated post-script where Moore explains the “Anthropology of Fire Wolf,” with a bibliography of scholarly publications. Moore’s imaginative reconstruction of Neanderthal life is interesting and generally well done, though many, including myself, will disagree with parts of it. For one thing, the Neanderthals are culturally and personally quite complex. There is some artifactual evidence to suggest more intellectual and symbolic life than past anthropology credited them with, but perhaps not as much as in this story. Moore makes the point (somewhat aggressively at times) that Neanderthals had short life spans with rapid development, social adulthood and physical and sexual maturity at 10 or 12 years of age for instance. This is hard to reconcile with an elaborate social culture of rituals and oral literature that must be learned. Of course Neanderthals with more modern minds make more interesting characters in fiction. Beyond specific quibbles, Moore does what the more sophisticated prehistoric fictions should do, working out archaeological problems in a way that both conforms to the evidence, and makes a good story. Moore himself has an elaborate mind. His Neanderthals live in a social world of rigidly constructed status and positions: chief hunter, fire tender, stone worker, and the like. Position around the fire is important, as is number symbolism. Seven (often euphemized as “six and one”) is a taboo number – there can never be 7 around a fire, or in a band, because there are 6 defined positions around a fire. This creates problems for characters in the story, for instance a mother about to give birth to a child who would be the 7th member of a small clan, or the wolves interacting with Lishi, which have 7 pups, “Seven wolves!” being a most severe curse. Moore has also constructed a Neanderthal language and uses his vocabulary constantly. This is sometimes annoying when it slows the reader who is trying to figure out what is going on, or is obsessively used for chapter numbers and so on. At other times the words ‘work’ and stick in your mind – I will never be able to look at a Levallois flake again without remembering that he calls them ‘benegot’ and makes them the most important physical and symbolic technology for his folk. He perhaps exaggerates the difficulty of making them, and their prehistoric importance, but in ways useful for his story, here setting up the symbolic and social specialization of the Stone Master. There is a lengthy glossary at the end of the book. Moore’s Neanderthals also have an extensive culture of oral poetry. They quote it a lot in the story, and he provides more complete “Trogmath Tasfit: Songs of the Tasfit People” at the end. This kind of thing worked for Tolkien, though even he got tiresome at times. Moore is not quite as good a poet, and I would have dialed the poetry back quite a bit. Overall, I enjoyed the novel. It took a while to get into Moore’s elaborate world, keeping track of multiple story lines and many characters, with made-up vocabulary to boot, but ultimately I found them compelling enough to remember. Perhaps those brought up on Lost and Myst and other deeply elaborated fictional worlds will be more quickly at home.

A fascinating journey into the past By Gabriel Boutros Fire Wolf is set in Pre-historic times, and follows various Neanderthal clans in their struggles to survive against nature, and sometimes against each other. The first thing that draws me into a book is characters that I believe in and that move me, whether it’s to love them or hate them. Despite the millennia which separate the characters in Fire Wolf from our present-day reality, I had no trouble empathizing with them, understanding their moods and desires, what makes them happy or sad, and what they need to survive or to thrive. It didn’t take long for what is essentially strange and exotic to feel commonplace to me, and I ended up caring very much about the fates of several people. There is Lishi, the young woman whose dreams of wolves may alter the fate of her clan; Giirt, the brave but foolhardy hunter who butts heads with just about everybody he meets; Menashi, the wise Seer who has to guide her clan in perilous times, and many others, all of whom quickly become familiar friends that I would visit with when I picked up the book. When I began to read Fire Wolf I wasn’t sure what I was getting into. My biggest concern was that I’d get lost in a lot of Neanderthal vocabulary, or that the story would get bogged down in descriptions of obscure rituals or belief systems. But the story is so well-told, and the characters so realistic and well-rounded, that the meanings of the occasional word or expression became quickly obvious from the context of the scene, and I rarely had to turn to the generous glossary that is found at the end of the book. There are also several appendices, some containing ritual poems or songs, as well as a quite a bit of the history and scientific background for the events in the story. Most importantly to me as a reader, Fire Wolf is a very entertaining book, full of personal drama, political intrigue and well-described action scenes (the mammoth hunt was particularly exciting). But it is also thoroughly researched, providing the reader with a richly-detailed world, with its own mythology, human relations and politics. The poems, songs and rituals all give a deep reality to the story, so that sometimes I felt like I was reading a history book, but without it ever being dry or a slog to read. And I suppose that this is the biggest compliment that I can give author Pearson Moore: he has managed to be highly entertaining without ever dumbing down the story, while adding to the little knowledge I had about this mysterious period in human history. Fire Wolf is a book that’s sure to appeal to all readers.

Green Fire Wolf is a fascinating study of Neanderthal mankind told through the stories of the clans of that time of our history. We are introduced to many characters, but a few standout and lead the story forward. Lishi is the young Seer who has a connection to wolves and has special visions that will lead her to her and her clan's destiny with the Flatheads (homo sapiens sapiens) . Along this path she is thwarted by her antagonist, Girrt, illustrating how mankind always has some that hunger for power and cannot accept learning how things can be done better. The reader is immersed in the culture and rituals of the Neanderthal clans and it is quite an interesting journey. I enjoyed the book very much and can't wait to read the next book of this saga.

The definitive biography of the most legendary basketball player of all time.Drawing on personal relationships with Jordan's coaches; countless interviews with friends, teammates, family members, and Jordan himself; and decades in the trenches covering Jordan in college and the pros, Roland Lazenby provides the first truly definitive study of Jordan: the player, the icon, and the man. When most people think of Michael Jordan, they think of the incredible moments so ingrained in basketball history that they have their own names: The Shrug, The Shot, The Flu Game. But for all his greatness, there's also a dark side to Jordan: a ruthless competitor, a gambler. There's never been a biography that balanced these personas-until now.

Michael Jordan: The Life, by Roland Lazenby

From Booklist Lazenby, author of an acclaimed biography of NBA great Jerry West, correctly points out that there have been enough books written about Michael Jordan to qualify as a genre. So why another? In order to reveal, Lazenby says, more of Jordan’s true self, his complex, almost bipolar personality. Jordan, we learn, driven by his hypercompetitiveness, could go from being a gracious person off the court to a vicious antagonist to teammates and opponents. As Jordan’s fame grew, Lazenby shows, he became its prisoner, and his isolation worsened after his father, Michael’s anchor in a world of sycophants, was murdered. Lazenby also digs into the rest of Jordan’s family, noting that Michael was estranged from the family for a time over a dispute between his then-wife, Juanita, and his mother. Lazenby’s resources include the vast printed Jordan library as well as interviews conducted recently, along with gleanings from the author’s years on the NBA beat. Readers who have immersed themselves in the Jordan “genre” will be familiar with much of what’s detailed here, but MJ’s life is a movie worth watching again, and Lazenby adds enough deleted scenes to add some oomph to the familiar story. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Interest in Jordan remains high, and this biography will be heavily promoted and is sure to receive coverage beyond both book pages and sports sections. --Wes Lukowsky

Review One of Amazon's Best Books of the Year: Sports & OutdoorsOne of Chicago Public Library's Best Books of 2014A Goodreads Choice Award Finalist: History and Biography"In his thoughtful, extraordinarily well-researched biography "Michael Jordan: The Life," Roland Lazenby... gives us the life and much more.... The exhaustive narrative of Jordan's basketball career is written with appropriate awe. But what makes this portrayal especially worthwhile is everything else."―Mike Greenberg, New York Times Book Review"An utterly definitive biography.... The most comprehensive attempt yet made to explain the factors that have gone into producing the most famous basketball player and marketing phenom in the history of world sports....I don't know how it would be possible to write a more complete biography of him."―The Chicago Tribune"When a world-class biographer writes about a world-class athlete, you have a biography for the ages. This is the ultimate study of Michael Jordan, and I know you will be as captivated as I was."―Pat Williams, Orlando Magic senior vice president, author of Coach Wooden's Greatest Secret"Revelatory.... A fascinating examination into the lonely, prideful man behind the glimmering icon."―Publishers Weekly"Roland Lazenby's new biography of Michael Jordan is as breathtaking as a dunk by 'His Airness.' ... A richly detailed, thoroughly researched book.... Lazenby expertly sifts through the myths to produce a definitive portrait of Michael Jordan."―Bob D'Angelo, Tampa Tribune"Right from its early pages it's clear that Roland Lazenby's biography of Michael Jordan is in full-press mode to be the best volume ever written on perhaps basketball's greatest player.... Lazenby's a born researcher and some serious legwork went into gathering all of the quotes and facts here, which add up to a kind of Jordan-centric encyclopedia."―Colin Fleming, The Boston Globe"Lazenby's thoroughly enjoyable biography is an impressive portrait of a man consumed by his competitive ambitions. It is also by far the most complete book on Michael Jordan to date.... Essential reading for all sports fans and particularly for those interested in American cultural history and popular culture."―Library Journal (starred review)"A lot has been written about arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan, but Roland Lazenby's Michael Jordan: The Life is easily the definitive version. But MICHAEL JORDAN: THE LIFE, by Roland Lazenby, ranks up there with the very best: The Boys of Summer by Roger Kahn, Friday Night Lights by Buzz Bissinger, and Joe DiMaggio by Richard Ben Cramer. The depth of reporting, his frequent ascent into poetry, and his intelligent analysis of the life of this complicated, fascinating American icon deserve Pulitzer Prize consideration. For the first time I understand what makes Michael Jordan tick. I was captivated, fascinated and beguiled from beginning to end."―Peter Golenbock, New York Times-bestselling author of George and In the Country of Brooklyn"Lazenby looks beyond the on-court exploits of a sports and cultural icon to find the complicated, and often contradictory, man behind the myth."―ESPN Holiday Gift Guide"Studded with insights."―Kirkus Reviews"Resplendent... There are details bound to surprise even the most die-hard Bulls fan."―Mike McGraw, The Chicago Daily Herald"The definitive portrait.... The dream of the non-fiction writer is to condemn future books on the same subject to irrelevance. It's possible Lazenby has achieved this lofty goal: nothing more needs to be written about Jordan."―Adrian Lee, Macleans"A comprehensive look at the life and times of the man and the legend.... A great work for any sports enthusiast and B-ball fan to read about one of the best that ever came to the game."―Brook Stephenson, Ebony"Lazenby is one of the best, most thoughtful and thorough people writing books on the NBA today, which makes all his books fascinating reads and great looks at the psychology of teams and great players. His stuff is must read."―Kurt Helin, NBC Sports' Pro Basketball TalkLazenby is "the Michael Jordan of writing about Michael Jordan."―MSNBC's The Cycle"Lazenby's prose soars as dramatically and excitingly as does his subject. A Great Commentary Of The Legend; A Shallow Treatise Of The Man By Raze Micheal Jordan:The Life is an average biographical work of a sports icon whose career was larger than the game of basketball, and any other sports figure in the history of sports. Roland Lazenby's account of our beloved MJ fails to deliver anything new or exciting, and the book comes off as just another familiar sports column. Sure, he covers much of MJ's basketball career, but he clearly steers past major obstacles-positive and negative-in MJ's life, with only scant details, i.e., Operation Push's Nike Boycot, and his refusal to endorse African American Harvey Gantt in the North Carolina Senate race against Jesse Helms because "Republicans buy shoes too." How did these decisions impact MJ, family and friends, African-American teammates, and the African-American community?MJ's family life is only remotely mentioned, many marital infidelities are oddly omitted, inplying that his affairs surfaced toward the end and after his basketball career. How did all this impact his wife and family? Also, Lazenby writes that MJ was a proud father, but fails to give any documentation to his Airness's fatherhood experiences; how his legend impacted his boy's (Marcus and Jeffrey) basketball careers, and how his failures affected all his children's (3 total, at the time) childhood experiences. Lastly, the book ends rather abruptly, leaving almost a blank concerning future plans of MJ's Charolette Hornets, his children's successes-life journey, and his new life with current wife Yvette Prieto. It would have been interesting story concerning MJ and Yvette Prieto's first meeting, and how she ultimately won MJ's heart. And what of MJ's estranged relationhip with his mother and siblings? All of these questions are strangely ignored as the book comes to a close.Did I enjoy reading Micheal Jordan:The Life? Sure, any book written about Micheal Jordan will always be facinating because it's written from a different perspective. However, I don't view Lazenby's Micheal Jordan:The Life as anything definitive, one could simply read former biographys on MJ and recieve the same information. As another mentioned, Lazenby's writing wasn't top notch either, personally, I felt at times he lingured too long on miniscule details and ranting which often detracted from the story. This book is all about MJ's superior drive as a dominate competitor; where did Lazenby dismantle MJ's legend and present him in raw human form? However, in spite of Lazenby's failure to give us a vunerable MJ, I believe that Lazenby's ability as a sportswriter fit exceptionally well, especially when describing with sports commentator finesse MJ's amazing on court prowess, and the Bulls incredible run to six championships.Personally, I believe that most have rated Lazenby's Micheal Jordan:The Life with 5 stars out of pure loyalty to MJ. Like millions blessed to witness the Jordan era, I'm still enamored with a man who once defied gravity, multiple obstacles, and willed himself and his teammates to absolute greatness. However, it isn't Air Jordan's spectacular legacy up for critique, MJ's career is unprecedented, but rather this particular compliation which is poorly written and worth only 3 stars. Perhaps, Lazenby, in the years to come will have an oportunity to improve upon 'The Life' with a much needed reissue: Micheal Jordan: (Inside) The Life, and he will have produced an original and definitive volume on 'The Life' of Micheal Jordan indeed.

By Bookreporter "The rarest talent is like a comet streaking briefly across the sky, captured only by the trailing flash of its brilliance." In his resplendent biography of Michael Jordan, veteran sportswriter Roland Lazenby carefully chronicles the Hall of Famer's journey from his humble beginnings in Teachey, North Carolina, to his startling transformation to "His Airness.""Personality-wise, he's a study," said former Chicago Bulls assistant coach Tex Winter of the six-time NBA champion. Lazenby offers nuanced insights into the basketball phenom's character through soulful and, at times, wistful family narratives. To understand the full force of MJ's wondrous life, Lazenby opens with the poignant story of Dawson Jordan. Born at the turn of the 20th century in a shotgun shack on the banks of North Carolina's Coastal plain, Michael's great-grandfather was a looming authority figure who possessed immense physical strength. In his youth, Dawson engaged in dangerous forestry, taking down trees, then bundling and floating the logs downriver to Wilmington's shipyards. In his lifetime, he was a lumber mill worker, logger, sharecropper, moonshiner, hunt club cook and determined survivor.Lazenby portrays James and Deloris Jordan as thoroughly devoted parents, preparing their five children to become citizens of the world. "The greatest impact of their parenting came in the constant shaping of the children's attitudes," Lazenby writes, "they preached a constant refrain: Work hard. Achieve. Set goals. Think ahead. Don't be denied. Be considerate. Don't dwell on race."Jordan's ability to listen was among his most impressive attributes, and his relationship with his mother made him receptive to coaching. Lanzenby notes that Jordan would come to call Dean Smith his second father and found Chapel Hill a safe harbor largely because of the family atmosphere that the Tar Heels coach built. There are many tender episodes of familial love sprinkled throughout the book, including father-and-son basketball trips and backyard baseball games. But Lazenby also sheds light on the myth of Jordan's perfect upbringing, such as a home plagued with marital discord, money problems and allegations of abuse.Daily heated one-on-one games with his stronger, older brother, Larry, resulted in constant thumpings. These physical backyard battles informed MJ's approach to the game both as an amateur and as a professional. Whether donning the uniform for Laney High School's Buccaneers, North Carolina's Tar Heels or the Chicago Bulls, Jordan's m.o. was to seek out the best player and try to dismantle them. Lazenby says, "Each opponent loomed as a Larry to be conquered."Comprehensive and well-researched, Lazenby's biography offers an impressive detailed account of Jordan's storied basketball, Olympic and baseball careers, as well as his wide-ranging business interests. MICHAEL JORDAN: THE LIFE is a definitive, multidimensional portrait of a man and a legend, and a notable contribution to sports literature.Reviewed by Miriam Tuliao.

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Comprehensive! By J. R. Anderson The content itself is great. This issue here is how much you want to read about Jordan's ancestors and early life. I think some of the negative reviews I've read have overstated it, though. By about 15% into the book, you're already dealing with Jordan's high school (varsity) playing, and his recruitment to UNC. From there, the remaining 80-85% is lots of new tidbits about the life you already know: college, the NBA, and post-pro life.If you're really looking to jump into an inside look at the parts of Jordan's life that you're already somewhat familiar with, skip the first 10-15%. That said, slogging through the early stuff makes the later stuff feel more satisfying.

Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy, is the eldest son of William the Conqueror yet the two men spend much of their lives at odds with each other. Robert's disdain for his cruel father's obsession with power and William's impatience with his son's lack of focus drive them apart, despite Robert inheriting the Conqueror's prowess for military strategy and his physical courage. Only Queen Matilda, wife of William and mother of Robert and his brothers, is able to keep peace between them. But King William isn't stupid. He looks to his son's attractiveness to women to create advantageous political alliances. So he isn't pleased when Robert, instead of making a match among the nobility, takes up with a blonde stable girl, Morberga, and presents her as his lady at court. But Robert won't be told where to love and is appalled when he finds his new sweetheart, the raven-haired, fiery horsewoman he thought he'd encountered by chance, is a Welsh princess placed in his way by William scheming for a united Wales. William is also quick to deploy Robert's talents both on the battlefield and in the diplomatic tent to ensure the security of his domains against Scottish King Malcolm. Perhaps William forgets that the king's ward Edgar is a bosom pal of Robert's...and that Edgar has his own claim to the English throne. Impaired by his father's ambitions for a Norman empire stretching from Northumbria to Italy, Robert does his best to defend honour without compromising principles, and to appease his father without becoming his pawn. His friends and other relatives are a mixed blessing. In the murky world of medieval politics everyone is angling for themselves, and sometimes Robert de Belleme, uncle Bishop Odo and brother Henry are just as much a threat to Robert's safety as his enemies. This is a wide-ranging and carefully researched tale of love and war, empirical ambition and everyday life. It illuminates the life of a man whom history has ignored, a man who might - and should- have been king.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A great read! By Marsha Robert the Wayward Prince Book One: The Getting of Empire by Austin Hernon tells the tale of the not-so-well-known oldest son of William the Conqueror, Robert. This story of Robert begins in 1079, thirteen years after the Battle of Hastings and the Norman takeover of England. Robert, who was about 12 when his father conquered England is now aged 25 and is out and about practicing war games in the borderlands of France. He is there after another disagreement with his father. So begins the pattern of Robert's life. A life full of conflict, love, and adventures.Robert had a great many conflicts with his father William, many arising from Robert's way of ruling which disappoints and angers his sire. Robert excels at military campaigns and diplomacy which William takes full advantage of as in his dealings with Malcolm of Scotland. When William dies he leaves Normandy to Robert who becomes Duke and England to his second son, William Rufus. Robert and William Rufus get along for the most part but some conflicts do arise as when William Rufus thinks he can rule Normandy better than Robert. William Rufus will also make use of Robert's skill in warfare and diplomacy in certain of his dealings. Thrown into the mix is William the Conqueror's third son, Henry, who is left money but no land when William dies but will scheme for the land denied him. Throw in a great many rebellious Norman lords and Robert had his hands full. The novel covers all the conflicts Robert endured.Covered in the tale is Robert's loves, such as his first love Morberga and a Welsh Princess Tegwin, the mother of his two sons, Richard and William. Tegwin, a love of long standing, is made to suffer long separations from Robert as he tries to govern Normandy. While the story does contain some graphic language in the love scenes, one can feel for Robert and Tegwin enduring their separations and the mutual love and respect they have for each other. One adventure highlighted in the book is Robert's journey to meet Matilda of Canossa, Italy, a fascinating lady of history. We see the journey Robert and his mesnie have to endure and the friendship that develops between Robert and Matilda. Further adventures await Robert and the reader as Book Two: Robert Warrior of the Cross will be coming soon.If you are a reader who likes a long, adventurous story that covers a great span of time then this book is for you. Austin Hernon writes with authenticity of the time period. One can feel they are part of Prince Robert's mesnie as they attack their enemies or as they travel around Normandy, England, and Italy, so vivid are the descriptions. I greatly enjoyed reading Prince Robert's story and look forward to reading his continuing adventures in the Holy Land coming in Book Two. I leave you with a quote found at the beginning of the book by the author which so profoundly describes Robert and his life.Be certain good princes, that when you defy convention you should also write your own history- else those whom you did frighten or discomfort will gladly write it for you. Or worse, bury it

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating adventure, historically credible with a strong central character By Georgina Faye A fascinating and gripping story based on fact about the Conqueror's overlooked eldest son. He managed to avoid inheriting the crown of England - he nearly killed his father by accident, and later didn't make it to his deathbed - and so the story of Robert Duke of Normandy is not well known. If this book is a guide, it deserves to be. Meticulously researched, this is convincing history, yet it provides the essentials of a successful novel: strong, intriguing characters and a suspenseful adventure story. Add in a few battles and a lot of sex and this is history like it never was in the classroom. Can't wait for Book 2, and Robert's adventures in the Crusades.Note to historians: I'm a history graduate and sometimes historical fiction even by the most popular authors makes me grind my teeth. This didn't. Relax and enjoy.
