Forced to betray her lord, a disgraced samurai fights to regain her honor

In the fabled land of Naipon, there is no warrior more feared, no samurai more respected than the legendary Tomoe Gozen. Her twin blades can change the course of any battle. After years of service to Lord Shigeno, she is about to renew her oath of loyalty when the sky darkens and a cry of rebellion comes from the hills. Possessed by an evil wizard, the peasants are marching against their master. Tomoe holds off the wave of pitchfork-wielding farmers for as long as she can. Finally the battle overwhelms her, and the greatest samurai in Naipon falls dead.

She awakes in hell, on a slope lined with bloody corpses. After an eternity of fighting, she reaches the summit and finds herself in the chamber of a wizard who restores her to life. She is alive - but now she must do his bidding. Her honor has been shattered, but Tomoe Gozen will do whatever it takes to win it back.

Among the Very Best By A Customer THE DISFAVORED HERO is a martial fantasy set in Naipon, a blend of historical twelfth century Japan and the world of Japanese myth and legend. The story chronicles the adventures of the lady samurai Tomoe Gozen, who engages in action aplenty, but also has a rich and complex inner life. If all this is not enough, there are moments of beauty so piercing as to leave you aching. Nor can I close without mentioning the wonderful cover art and interior illustrations by Wendy Wees. They will surely enhance your reading pleasure and stimulate your imagination.

Salmonson is better than your favorite fantasy author. :) By A Customer In my opinion, Salmonson is among the five *best* fantasy authors of all time. In this particular oh-so-bloody-hard-to-put-down series, she writes of a female samurai's adventures in feudal Japan--a Japan replete with all of Japan's traditional magicks and supernatural creatures--in a completely believable, serious, and captivating manner. If you've a love of Japanese animation, or Japanese culture in general, or if you are one of the fantasy readers that is finding most fantasy is too juvenile for you nowadays (try Beagle also!), give her a try.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A well-written story about a woman samurai By Katherine M. Lawrence Reviewed on April 7, 2015: Jessica Amanda Salmonson's three book "Tomoe Gozen" series, plus "The Harmonious Battle," a short story from the author's "A Silver Thread of Madness," which continued part of the series, are not to be missed by people who like women heroes, especially female samurai. Set in a sort of parallel universe, Salmonson paints a world where the creatures and beings of Japanese mythology live side-by-side with humans. Thus Tomoe fights tengu, meets ghosts, and descends into the Land of Roots--the underworld--to achieve her aims, including fighting a great beast blindfolded for reasons that become clear in the plot.Tomoe is a vassal of a woman daimyo (sometime translated as "lord,"or in the case of a woman a "lady"). Thus the rarity of a woman warrior is made even rarer by that warrior serving a woman of the aristocracy. I do not wish to give any spoilers, but there is plenty of action as the main character fights for her honor, independence, integrity, and her loyalty to the lady she serves. The writer has a strong voice, a good sense of pacing, and delivers the story arc in a satisfying way over the three book series. originally published in the early 1980s, the story is as fresh and engaging as it ever was.I highly recommend this series to all those who like a strong, independent, female action hero.
