Perkins I just wrote a review for Arthur Upfield's "Lure of the Bush" then, since in the review I waxed favorably about "Gripped By the Drought" as a better book, I typed in this page on the Amazon book line thinking I should write here what I'd written there. In getting to the "Write a Review" line I tripped over three disappointments though. First, there's been no popular reprint of the book; second, a copy costs $480, shipping not included; then and third, the only other reviewer, David Colburn, seems to have run out of gold stars - he stopped at three- to give Upfield's first and greatest book. Colburn recommends it as a "good read" though. I'll go him two stars better and reiterate what I wrote elsewhere, "Gripped By the Drought" is one of the best novels ever written. Here's why. The plot's tight except for a few diversions to describe people but those asides only add interest to the story. The characterizations are excellent. Describing people is one of Upfield's great strengths. Describing nature and its effects is another Upfield strength and here he's at his best. At points in this book the tension of weather troubles is so great you'll want to skip pages to avoid suffering along with characters. Where an author can write so well that you both want to read the story but emotionally can't, that's great writing. The themes of man against nature, of an incompatible couple trying to integrate their lives, of friend putting friend over self, and the other lesser ones are masterfully told and woven well together. This is a believable story, it's memorable, and to take a word from the title, it's gripping. Get a copy through interlibrary loan. To reiterate, this is a "good read."

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Gripped by Drought By David Colburn Most of us know Arthur W. Upfield because of his twenty-nine detective stories featuring the incomparable Napoleon Bonaparte, the half-Aboriginal sleuth. GRIPPED BY DROUGHT is one of an handful of non-Bony books by Upfield, and is reputed to have been Upfield's personal favorite. In an introductory remark, the author apologizes for the work's title. He had intended to use just the word "DROUGHT", but there was another book with that title already in print when GRIPPED BY DROUGHT went to press in 1932.The plot traces the impact of a three years' drought on the gigantic Atlas sheep station. The hero is Feng Ching-wei, a diligent station manager of Chinese descent, who looks after the interests of his lifelong friend Frank Mayne. Mayne's intelligence and leadership qualities, sorely needed during the drought, are nullified by his preoccupation with the emotional complications of his loveless marriage. Because of Feng's strength of character and discretion, Atlas is saved from financial ruin, and Frank Mayne gets a new lease on life.In a sense, this early Upfield work laid the foundation for many of his subsequent stories. If you've read the "Bony" books, you'll notice right away that the Chinese-Aussie Feng has a lot in common with the half-caste Inspector Bonaparte. (Born-apart; get it?) Principally, each man's character was fired in the forge of racial discrimination. In order to suceed in the white man's world of 1930, a person of color needed almost superhuman energy and integrity, as well as intelligence and an unflagging work ethic. The very sympathetic elderly British character called "Sir John" seems to be the prototype of the character called "John Lutton" in THE BATTLING PROPHET, which Upfield wrote twenty-four years later. The relentless progression of the three years' drought prefigures the drought sequence in DEATH OF A LAKE.(1954) The necessity of desperate measures in animal husbandry is revisited in THE TORN BRANCH, which appeared in 1959.Upfield's biographer, Jessica Hawke, mentioned an incident in which Upfield and a friend were once falsely imprisoned by a small-town police official who needed free labor to repaint the jail. Apparently the incident made a lasting impression on Upfield, because he explored the idea at least twice in his fiction; once in GRIPPED BY DROUGHT, and again, fourteen years later, in DEATH OF A SWAGMAN.If you've read the "Bony " books, you NEED to read GRIPPED BY DROUGHT, but good luck finding a reading copy! It is by far the rarest Upfield book; copies that come up for sale are extremely collectible, and always cost several hundred dollars. Examples of the original edition of 1932 are almost never seen. The American edition, which Dennis McMillan printed in 1990, had a press run of only 450 copies, and those are the ones that cost $400-$600 on the internet today. I finally borrowed a copy on inter-library loan. It's a good read, and especially impressive when you realize that it was written by a rough laborer of very modest educational attainment, but this book doesn't have the artistic maturity of Upfield's later work.

Her Unforgettable Laugh: A Pride and Prejudice Variation (Volume 1), by Linda Thompson

About the Author Linda Thompson was born in Washington, D. C., and grew up in the Maryland suburbs. Perhaps this accounts for her love of culture and all things historical. She is an East Coast girl through-and-through, who loves the ocean! To her, there is no more soothing sound than the kiss of the surf as it reaches the sand. Linda's love of reading and particularly the Regency Era began during her long bus commutes in junior high school. During her last year in junior high, she was introduced to what would become her two favorite books: Gone With the Wind and Pride and Prejudice. Her first attempt at writing was a sequel to Gone With the Wind at the age of sixteen. Though writing was always something she enjoyed, Linda's career of choice was that of Administrative Assistance. Oddly enough, she always found a need to create a company newsletter for each of her employers. She currently makes her home in Denton, Texas. She has been married to her husband, Jim, for 27 years and has had the privilege of being a stay-at-home mom for her three children for the last seventeen years. You will often find her engrossed in a good book--usually JAFF or other historical fiction. She also loves to bake, cook, scrapbook, dance (She was a classically trained ballet dancer for thirteen years.), and travel. Now the joy of writing fills up much of her time. As a glance at her blog would indicate, Linda adores spring flowers. She took the pictures that adorn the page. You can learn more about her writing and upcoming books at https://lindathompsonbooks.wordpress.com where she is happy to get your comments or you can send her an email at mailto:lindathompson.author@gmail.com.

Unfortunately I didn't notice in the upper part of the information that it is a series. It is not stated in the book summary. I was disappointed when it abruptly came to an end. I would not have paid this much for part of a novel. The reviewer above says it will be 3 parts. If each of them is over $8.00, that is ridiculous. I could purchase almost any hardcover classic/award winning novel for that cost.Other than it being a series, I found the book creative and well written. Miss Bingley and Wickham are over the top, but that is pretty constant in these books. I have read a lot of these stories and just sort of page ahead when the focus is on those characters.

Sweet but didn't hit the mark By J Bennett I enjoyed this book but was glad when I got to the end where I found there is another book that goes along with this one. (Oh my!). There's some nice plot lines here, but quite frankly, I prefer my Mr Darcy to have more character layers. He's so sweet and honorable and such a paragon of virtue that I don't know who could stand living with such a man ... he is truly a man without fault ... and so is Lizzy come to think of it. Good read, but certainly not (IMO) one of the better variations.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Lovely P&P Variation By barblibrarian This was a lovely variation from Pride and Prejudice. Another reader indicated the villains were not at all subtle, and I have to agree they were quite villainous and pretty two dimensional. But, the characters we love were pretty true to canon and the story kept my attention. The one negative with Her Unforgettable Laugh was the same issue we see with many self-published authors: many, many typos.I think many of us are getting too used to free or cheap stories and are not willing to pay the price it really takes for an author to be fairly compensated. I hate to read reviews that rate the story based on the price they were charged. If you can't afford the price, don't buy. If you can afford it and enjoy the story, please don't base your rating on the price. If you don't enjoy a story, spell out why and give the author some honest feedback. Remember that you expect to be fairly compensated for your work.

Two hundred years ago, the path of human history took a frightening turn. But the event was carefully hidden from the world....until now.

Young Sarah was devastated following the loss of her mother. At just six years old, she was now alone and very confused. She had no idea that the young, newly assigned social worker on the other side of the glass would become the hero she needed. Neither of them did.

Christine Rose's smile through the window was a nervous one. It was her first case and no one knew yet just how special Sarah really was. But Christine was about to find out, including the terrible reason behind her mother's death.

The time had finally come. After being hidden for centuries, the world's most devastating secret was now being exposed. And with it, a chain reaction as far reaching as anyone could imagine.

But one individual could still change the outcome. From the halls of Washington D.C., to the Vatican, to the deserted Nazi bunkers of Argentina, Christine would ultimately be left with just one goal ... keeping Sarah alive.

And what Christine doesn't yet know is she isn't the only one on Sarah's side.

Michael Grumley's book "Breakthrough" was a home run but he completely knocks it out of the park with "Amid the Shadows!"Sarah Baxter's mother is violently murdered but the forces of evil are really after Sarah. She has a supernatural gift that a very powerful person wants to extinguish. She ends up in the care of social worker Christine Rose who has her own set of issues. Sarah and Christine find themselves in a terrifying conspiracy that has the fate of the world in the balance. It is imperative that Sarah live but Christine can barely take care of herself. Sarah and Christine find there is someone very special looking out for them. From the very first few pages, I was completely drawn into the story and could not put the book down. This is one book I will definitely read several times. The characters are very well developed and the plot will keep you guessing all the way to the end. Just when you think you got it figured out, the story takes a very quick turn or another twist is added. This book is full of great characters and adrenaline laced action. Michael leans on his IT background. The history and science are well researched. This is an author you will want to keep an eye on. If "Amid the Shadows" is an indicator, Michael Grumley will be providing us with more great reads!

Another winner from Michael Grumley By Jay and Robin Another excellent read from Michael Grumley - the kind that you keep next to you on your morning commute so that you can read another few sentences at each red light (yes, I really did). The storyline is both imaginative and gripping. You start out needing a bit of a willing suspension of disbelief at the premise but the adrenalin-filled plot and the richly drawn characters quickly have you forgetting any thoughts of unreality and reading faster and faster to see what comes next, and in that Grumley definitely does not disappoint.I admit I was a bit leery of this one at first after reading a few reviews talking about the "religious" plot, but having read it can say with confidence that this is a storyline that will appeal to those who are uninterested in religious themes as well. The religious, or rather faith-based, theme informs the story in a Dan Brown type style, it's not heavy-handed and doesn't preach or convey any kind of missionary agenda. Now the only question which remains is when is Grumley's next book coming out?

56 of 58 people found the following review helpful. Amid the Shadows - Michael Grumley By Maureen McKee Just finished this really exciting book which has an unusual and imaginative plot. I've read Mr. Grumley's previous book, Breakthrough, which was excellent and he has produced another of the same caliber. Who would think to use 'soldiers' sent by God to battle the evil of the world and inject them into a high paced thriller. There is tension, nail biting suspense and a horrible fear that nothing is going to happen in time to save the devastation of the planet. In the centre of all of this is a little girl with enormous powers which she takes for granted but poses a threat to the power of the man who has set all of the deadly plot in motion. He holds an almost unassailable position within the US government so has free reign to carry out his evil mission and he has many people to do his bidding together with a brilliant cyber hacker in his employ who will place a stranglehold on the world's computers. This is terrorism which is dangerously powerful. Be prepared to be frightened at the possibility of something so deadly happening.
