Simon Templar, better known as "the Saint," is perhaps the first truly multimedia hero: By the 1960s his adventures had appeared in books, films, comic-strips and on television. But radio has been the most durable medium for the Saint; from the first series during World War II to the most recent in 2002, fifteen actors have played the modern-day Robin Hood. Of course when you mention The Saint on the radio most people think of Vincent Price, and quite understandably for he was the longest-running and most high-profile incumbent of the halo. But who were the other fourteen – and how did they get their haloes? The Saint on the Radio goes behind-the-scenes of the Saint, providing intriguing detail about the series' creation, its writers, episode synopses, and all the cast over the years. It provides an invaluable guide to the radio adventures of one of the 20th Century’s most enduring and endearing heroes.

The Saint on the Radio, by Ian Dickerson

About the Author Despite a career in broadcasting author Ian Dickerson is perhaps best known for his association with the adventures of Simon Templar, The Saint. He's written a biography of his friend, The Saint's creator, Leslie Charteris and written several books on aspects of The Saint's long career. He co-produced a US TV pilot in 2013 and will be repeating that job for ITV in 2016. He's also written, produced and directed a number of documentaries on the making of various classic TV shows (yes, including The Saint and Return of the Saint). For the sake of his sanity he occasionally escapes the hagiography and has published articles on subjects as diverse as satellite links, mashed potatoes and Lord Grade. Ian lives in Romsey, Hampshire with his wife and two children. And an awful lot of books by Leslie Charteris.

By Legendary Burl Barer Anyone who loves The Saint, old time radio, or broadcast trivia will enjoy this incredibly well researched and immensly readable addition to Dickerson's ongoing series of excellent and accurate books about The Saint in diverse media. Doickerson writes from a unique perspective as he knew Leslie Charteris, creator of The Saint, personally, and has had unprecedented access to material not readily available to the casual, superficial researcher. Dickerson does everyone a favor by clearing up oft-repeated errors of titels rhat have caused confusion in the past, and his perfect blend of solid research and light hearted style makes The Saint on the Radio an excellent and reliable adjunct to your Saint library.

The definitive guide to this radio program By The Tattered Thread I received this book free for review from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Despite the privilege of receiving a free book, I’m absolutely candid about it below because I believe authors and readers will benefit most from honest reviews rather than vacuous 5-star reviews. The nutshell on this book is simply that it is, essentially, an exhaustive list of episodes for this entire series in all its incarnations even to the audiobook editions. Each episode is laid out in in varying levels of details with the early episodes getting only the most basic of coverage while the later ones are immaculately described down to inclusion of the entire scripts. To the positive side, the author has obviously put a profound amount of research into this book. It is dizzying in its scope and depth. The entire last 25% of the book is two full scripts from "The High Fence" and "No Hiding Place." If there is a question about the history of this fine radio program that is not answered in this book then I cannot rightly imagine what it could be. Except that...On the negative side, the coverage is somewhat limited on the early episodes. The first 10% describes the very early history and lists only the most minimal detail for those first 12-15 episodes. This is perturbing since later entries are so wonderfully complete. In summary, for those who are fans of the program this is a must-have guidebook to the entire program. It puts the vastness of this work in its proper perspective. Those who are not already fans, I suspect, will be overwhelmed by the book and would be better served to delve into the show first and then come back to the more definitive treatment later.PS: I hope my review was helpful. If it was not, then please let me know what I left out that you’d want to know. I always aim to improve.

(OTR) By Will Graham Having been a Saint fan from the age of 7 or so, and a long time Old Time Radio buff, this book goes *beyond* entertaining. A great deal of information revealed a lot I personally had never heard of. Ian Dickerson's respect for the character comes through wonderfully, and this is a genuine labor of love on his part.I cannot recommend this one highly enough!
