Bader This is a charming and genuine story about the people and life in the Tuscan hill town of Volterra. Señor Manghetti allows us to see and feel the heart of the characters. One can see and hear the piazza. If you have ever been to Tuscany or dream of visiting, this story will delight you. Some of the prose reminded my of Carlo Levy's Christo Si E Fermato e Eboli.

Fifteen Montana cowboys and five hundred longhorns are embarking on a one of a kind Wild West adventure: a cattle drive across a thousand miles of Siberia. The clash of cultures between East and West, American six shooter and Russian saber, begins immediately when a band of Cossacks arrives to escort them to their destination. Cowboys and Cossacks must work together or they’ll never survive the journey, which includes a meeting with the warrior, Genghis Kharlagawl, and his army of bloodthirsty Tartars. The code of the cowboy and the credo of the Cossack offer different measures of manhood―but honor and courage are the same in any language when a common enemy must be faced.

Book Lust Rediscoveries is a series devoted to reprinting some of the best (and now out of print) novels originally published from 1960 to 2000. Each book is personally selected by NPR commentator and Book Lust author Nancy Pearl and includes an introduction by her, as well as discussion questions for book groups and a list of recommended further reading.

97 of 100 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful novel! By Bruce Trinque Forget that "The Cowboy and the Cossack" is a "Western" novel -- it is a wonderful novel that happens to fall in that genre, that's all. I almost typed "a wonderful novel that happens to take place in the Old West" but that wouldn't be accurate. "The Cowboy and the Cossack" actually takes place in the Old East -- Siberia, to be exact -- where a group of Montana cowboys have come with a herd of Texas longhorns to be driven thousand of miles across this alien landscape. The characters are beautifully and subtly drawn, and the action and the setting are done with equal skill. The plot is exciting and the relationships between the characters are moving. This one belongs on a bookshelf right next to "Lonesome Dove" and, coming from me, that is high praise. I read a borrowed paperback and, so much did I like this novel, that I have now ordered my own copy for future re-reading. If you don't care for "Westerns", try it anyway (neither of the two women who recommended it to me like "Westerns" either, but they both loved this novel). And if you do like the genre, then I suspect this one will move on to your list of all-time favorites.

51 of 52 people found the following review helpful. Whenever I find this book, I buy it. By Jylene Livengood I've never been a western fan. I'll say that right up front because that said, I buy this book every chance I get. My copies keep vanishing as I loan them out and new readers fall in love with Huffaker's work. This, and One Time I Saw Morning Coming Home - these two books are full of warmth, compassion, passion and the rich delight that comes with a book that's just a wonderful read. Huffaker deserves a much wider readership and it's a shame his books aren't better known. Give this one a chance if you see it - and then share it with someone who's never had the luck!

36 of 37 people found the following review helpful. The Cowboy and the Cossack By Rita G. Randolph I'm a voracious reader (not particularly of Westerns) and this book, which I read 15 years ago remains as one of my all time favorites. If any book deserves to be reprinted, it is this one! A must read!

In the fall of 1765, New York City is roiling with fury at the impending enforcement of the Stamp Tax, which portends ruin to virtually all classes. There could not be a worse moment for the young, fetching-but none too bright-third wife of a wealthy merchant to be brutally stabbed to death in her own backyard. With some factions in the city calling for peaceful protest while others howl for armed defiance, her foolish jests against the radicals had aroused bitter indignation, widespread contempt, and the family's mortification. When the slogan of the Sons of Liberty is discovered near her corpse, supporters of the imperial prerogative are quick to assign blame.

Unexpectedly commissioned to seek out the truth, aspiring shipper Thomas Dordrecht's first duty is to his desperate employers, frantically working to put their ships to sea before the November first deadline. But when the tax goes into effect on that date, Dordrecht is hot in pursuit of the culprit . . . as the town erupts in a full-scale riot that nearly touched off the American Revolution ten years early.

“Exquisite Folly is terrific: a marvelous combination of suspense with a superb portrait of New York society.”

-Thomas Fleming, author of Liberty! The American Revolution

The plot is exciting with unexpected twists, seamlessly woven into the historical events surrounding the British attempt to impose the Stamp Act on the American colonials in 1765. The characterizations of the hero Thomas, his friends, and his nefarious adversaries are all excellent. "Exquisite Folly" can be enjoyed by readers who have not yet read the earlier books in the series, but I highly recommend those as well. You needn't be a history buff to enjoy these books.

If history, humor and delightful tales are to your taste, do not hesitate to read the Thomas Dordrecht books. The only problem I have with them is re-entering the 21st century when I put the book down. Okay, one more problem, I have to wait for the next one.

It all started when a rookie American agent from the 21st Century got sent on what he thought was a routine mission to Canada to investigate a suspected arms trafficking ring masterminded by the nefarious Arish Aziz. John Davis – the agent in question – was not to know that his day would go from bad to worse so very quickly. He was briefed for his mission, but nowhere in the briefing was anything mentioned about him having to deal with a vigilante sociopath from New York City named Malcolm or the sociopath’s Canadian ex-girlfriend Mary, who seemed to have some anger and impulse-control issues. It also completely declined to mention that John would start hearing a voice inside his head that addressed him in the third person. His briefing also left out the fact that the entire fabric of reality as he knew it would be unraveled, and that he would end up in the year 1812. This version of 1812 he found himself in was certainly very different from how he had remembered it from history class in high school. The United States and Canada did not exist, Great Britain was no longer so great, and a sprawling empire called New Georgia occupied most of North America. A tiny sliver of territory on the northwest coast broke away from the Empire which resulted in the massing of New Georgian soldiers to the immediate south of them. John, Malcolm, and Mary are stuck in the middle of it all and they need to figure out how to stop a war, and not just the one they are fighting with one another. They are further faced with wondering how this world became the way it was, and whether or not there is any way to set things back to the way they are supposed to be. There are no shortages of riddles to solve and villains to deal with, but the biggest threats to Malcolm, Mary and John are themselves, as each has to overcome their own obsessions and preconceived ideas, as well as their rocky relationships with one another. Often, all it takes for history to take a drastic turn is one relatively minor event. One such event had occurred, and as a result their continent and reality were completely unrecognizable. Can they discover what that event was? If they can, is there anything they can do about it? Or will their actions only make the world they knew forever irretrievable?

This Book Will Renew Your Heart and Mind By Shadowplay Persistent Love by Laura Marshall is a stunningly enchanting story of how each of us has to discoverGod's enduring and lavish love on our own. Persistent Love will touch the hidden parts of your heartthat you hold back from everyone else. The hope that springs up from the pages of this story willenvelope you and never let you go.I read this book in one sitting because I couldn't tear myself away from it. The mixture of innocence andlose incessantly tugged on my heart strings. I had to know what would happen next, and then, of course,I had to know how it all ended. The last scene was the most beautiful scene throughout the whole story,in my opinion, because it rang of nothing but pure love and unabashed hope. The effortless and flowing writing of Laura Marshall will instantly transport you to another time andplace without any effort. You will be introduced to some beautiful but flawed characters whose livesmirror our own, and you will eagerly cheer them on and hope that they will come to see what is staringthem in the face. The two main characters Tara and Andrew stole my heart right away with their similarheartaches and yet one of them was so utterly and completely unaware of that missing part of their life.Persistent Love will wrap you in its tender, open arms and fill you to overflowing with its pure hope andunconditional love. You won't know how or when the transformation happened, but your heart will bechanged and you will find yourself a little more fulfilled and content then when you first started reading.I would recommend Persistent Love to anyone who needs and wants to be shown that true, honest, and unconditional love exists. While you may rationalize that this is only a story, I will confidently tellyou that all stories begin with an idea, and all good and pure and helpful ideas came straight from ourloving and wonderful Creator. I hope that you will allow the ever loving and always available God of theUniverse to sweep you up into His arms, so that He can love you back to life.

Little Women meets Sense and Sensibility By Cynthia As the title of my review states, this story reminded me a lot of "Little Women" at times and "Sense and Sensibility" at times. It was an easy, lighthearted read that had just enough mystery to keep the reader in suspense. I love castles and keys. Add s stubborn, young, beautiful girl who's mad at God, and you've got yourself a great story. So many stories show the man being the one who doesn't have faith with the girl desperately trying to save him or at least get him saved. Not this one. From the moment I began reading this book, I was hooked. I had to know what really happened and why. If you like clean love stories with faith blended in, give this novella a read. It's perfect for an afternoon on the couch.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An enjoyable, fast read! By Ginny Persistent Love by Laura Marshall is a captivating historical suspense romance featuring two main characters,Tara and Andrew. Tara witnessed a tragedy at a young age and moved away with her family to a castle of Raven's Cliff where she meets Andrew. They become friends in spite of Tara's fears. I loved how the story gave hope to Tara as Andrew helped to bring her closer to God and Tara grew to depend on God's love and the only answer to life's problems. An engaging, beautifully written story that was a joy to read!

The Traitor's Mark (THOMAS TREVIOT), by D. K. Wilson

Review If you liked Shardlake, you will love this exciting new series of novels set in the turbulent age of Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and Thomas Cromwell, and effortlessly underpinned by the brilliant scholarship for which Derek Wilson is renowned. We feel we are really there, in an authentically evoked Tudor London, hot on the trail of a real-life murder mystery. Highly recommended! Alison Weir, bestselling author and historian [Full of] Murder, kidnapping and intrigue...the fictitious characters blend well with the real protagonists...and the red herrings abounded as they should in any good mystery tale. Recommended. Historical Novels Review on THE TRAITOR'S MARK The sense of period is impeccable, and the reader really gets a sense of how shocking this murder must have been... The story has more twists than a dancing serpent and the pace is relentless, yet it is the characterisation and the little details that make it such a good read. Historical Novels Review on THE FIRST HORSEMAN The First Horseman is a resounding success that blends fact and fiction to create a gripping, fast moving Tudor crime story that educates as well as fascinates...Wilson has created a compelling character, and the fact that this series will continue to revolve around real life Tudor mysteries is fantastic...unputdownable would be an understatement. The Bookbag on THE FIRST HORSEMAN Wilson wonderfully [evokes] the street-level reality of Tudor-era England in its weathers and sights and smells and even in its unexpected beauties. The plot is charged with genuine suspense Christian Science Monitor

About the Author D.K. Wilson is an historian and expert on the Tudor period, having already published acclaimed non-fiction books on Tudor England and Henry VIII.

It seems to have everything, and everything done quite well-- plot, place, politics. But somehow the progression of the story just didn't catch fire for me. I had to labor through it to the end. But, there is so much right with the way this author writes, I will try another of his.

By Claire Ridgway The Traitor’s Mark takes us forward in time from The First Horseman by seven years to autumn 1543. The characters we came to know and love in 1536 have got on with their lives after the troubles of 1536, but little do they know that trouble is once more stirring. The protagonist Thomas Treviot, a London goldsmith, is trying to contact artist and jewellery designer Hans Holbein, about a promised jewellery commission, when his messenger and friend gets arrested for murdering Holbein’s apprentice and Holbein is nowhere to be found. Not only does Treviot need to help his friend get out of this mess, he needs to find Holbein to get the promised jewellery design. But before he can do much about tracking down the artist, a warrant arrives requiring him to visit Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury – what has Treviot got himself into?Everything soon spirals out of control and Treviot just doesn’t know who to trust. Who’s Black Harry and who’s his puppet master? Are Treviot’s links to Cranmer going to bring him down as people in high places plot against the Archbishop? And just what has Holbein to do with any of this? Can Treviot find Holbein and keep those he loves safe?Once again, eminent historian Derek Wilson has taken a real-life mystery – the mysterious death of Holbein in 1543 – and turned it into a compelling and intriguing thriller. The political intrigue of Henry VIII’s court at this time is brought beautifully to life through Treviot’s eyes and Wilson has the gift of conjuring up vivid pictures of both places and people in the reader’s mind with just a few words. The First Horseman and The Traitor’s Mark are must-reads for anyone who enjoys historical thrillers like those written by C.J. Sansom, and I hope D.K. Wilson is working on the third – I can’t wait to read it.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Be Prepared for Late Nights By Templevillemary This is D K Wilson’s second Tudor thriller in the Thomas Treviot series, set in mid-16th century England. It follows on from The First Horseman and the action takes place about seven years from where the first book ends. The author is a renowned historian, thus the authentic Tudor backdrop. The book is peopled by well-known, real life characters such as Archbishop Cranmer and Hans Holbein, the portrait painter to Henry VIII. The novel is based on the disappearance of Holbein, and the efforts of Treviot, a young London goldsmith, to discover what has befallen him. This involvement brings the protagonist and his family and friends into the midst of danger and intrigue. The uncertainty and turbulence of life in England in the 16th century, where the wrong word in the wrong ear could mean burning at the stake, is brought vividly to life by the author. The survival of even the most favoured of Henry VIII’s confidants can hang in the balance, depending on who has the King’s ear at that particular moment. We need just think of Thomas Cromwell’s influence, and how quickly he fell from grace. You will feel yourself drawn into the lives of Thomas and his loved ones, and you will really care about what could happen to them as he gets himself deeper into the religious and political turmoil around him. I recommend all lovers of Tudor history to read this book. Be prepared for late nights and bleary-eyed mornings. I hope that the author is well into the writing of the third Treviot story. As for myself, I will now start on his non-fiction works.

A great twist on the modern shaman/wizard trope. I could ramble about the story and how intricate and riveting it is. However great books are not made by story but characters. The beauty of Thomas Alsop is all of the characters feel about real. This is rare for comics as most tend to go for high concept story telling and skip over giving the people in the book real feelings and emotions. My only complaint is that some of the people in the book do not have a distinct voice and sound the same. However that said most comics can't separate character voices at all.The only real issue I have is that it's volume one of an two part story while I read the whole series in comic book format I hope there is a volume two on the way so I can read it all in one sitting again

Getting to the sick heart of things By Mehitchcock ** spoiler alert **This is a really beautifully drawn book.It takes place in modern day NYC with colors in a lush watercolor style which manages to somehow be both garish and washed out at once. Very interesting look. The flashbacks are mainly in black and white, but often include one other color for highlight- blood red or sepia commonly. As the central mystery of the story unfolds, this style of art really starts to make sense. We're in a world where magic is real and where NYC is the magical key to the world, but where NYC isn't doing to good and hasn't been for a long time.I do not want to spoil the central image of the book (though the reason I bought it was the guy in the comic book shop showing it to me) but I do want to spoil the central subtext of the book. I find it remarkable. In any story with magic, a fine question to ask is what's the point? Is this just entertainment or can it be something more? In this case, it is much more.New York City, like much of America, has a lot of blood in its foundation. It's easy to pretend that slavery was only a real problem in the South, but all that suffering and death was a major boost to the young American economy. It's a sin we've never really answered for, something so big and so evil, it's hard to even imagine what that answer could be.So, during the character's flashbacks we discover the source of much of the magical malaise that infects the city comes in the form of the boards and beams of a dismantled slave ship which had been constructed by black magic to bring and enslave an African shaman over and which had been sold off as fill to help build the new coast of lower Manhattan. What an image! A country literally built on the back of slaves, a city that is the spirit of that country, and, it too, was literally built with the blooded beams of a slave ship. It's just great! The Alsop family, some original settlers to the area, had been conscripted by the Mespeatches (Maspeth) Indians as the magical protectors of the land. This gift and curse had been passed down through the generations until we arrive at the current day, with the main character, a somewhat lazy, burned out, fame-obsessed, lost, and lazy dude who is kinda bad at the job of protector. But is it his fault? Or is it just the creeping dread from the rot at the center of lower Manhattan? Maybe a combination of both. Either way, he's a fun character to be around and an interesting center to the story. The book ended on a cliffhanger, but not a cool conclusive cliffhanger that is also a good stopping point- this was more of an in the middle of things abrupt kind of cliffhanger. I'll definitely be following the series, but I thought this was a weakness.Very strong book. You'll love that central image too, right at the end of Chapter Two, you'll know right away when you see it. Another great way to represent the kind of pain that festers at the center of things- a real powerful theme to build a narrative around. And such pain was also hinted at existing within the family and Thomas himself, something I'll look forward to being carried a little further in future installments.Cause like it or not, whether talking about a person, a family, a city, or a whole culture, if there is pain in there, it will control the story. Very interesting if you're not the one hurt. Very sad if you're in it. Rich material on which to build a fictional universe.

I loved it because I got more out of it than I was expecting. The first handful of chapters actually go into coverage of how wound care is managed from a healthcare system standpoint which was helpful, covering things like reimbursement for these services. The meat and potatoes (actually talking about how to do wound care) is fantastic and well written!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. some twists I didn't see coming - brilliant By Dawn L The author kindly sent me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.Almost everything I said about "Dorelle's Journey" ("everything just feels right - the writing, the story, the pace, the setting, the characters... everything. It's all perfectly blended and seamless.") remains true for "Kraken War" - the second book in "The Cloud Lands Saga"."Almost everything"? Well, I recommended book 1 for younger readers. The mating of dragons (and the effects on their riders) in book 2 is not for young eyes to read, so I'd now recommend this series for young adults and older. We get to learn a lot more about dragons, riders, and the culture of the world Hannah Steenbock has created - and it's fascinating! I'm secretly (okay, not so secretly now!) hoping there will be a lot more backstory at some point... possibly a novella devoted to the development of this intriguing culture. There's also some twists I didn't see coming - brilliant.

Kraken War holds it's readers hostage By Elizabeth Robert Having just finished Kraken War (The Cloud Lands Saga Book 2), I must say...what an incredible read! I could not get to the next paragraph fast enough to find out what was going to happen, and yet I so wanted to linger in the last to wring each juicy morsel out of it.Hannah has managed to write a gentle love story, within a struggle to survive, within a need to dispel myths about dragons and riders!I could not be more thrilled to have this in my collection!

Hannah Steenbock never fails to engage the reader with her well drawn characters and imaginative settings. From the very beginning, you are drawn into a world of dragons and their brave riders banding together to fight the terrible Kraken. This was a worthy follow-up to book I, "Dorelle's Journey", and I found it quite enjoyable. I was sitting at the edge of my seat in parts and was left wanting more at the end and now I'm looking forward to the next chapter! I highly recommend this for fans of fantasy and just good, quality writing! Well done!

Mattie’s Heart (The Morgan Family Saga Book 1) By Readers Corner I’m not usually one for this type of story, but I couldn’t wait to read this story of the Patriarch and Matriarch of the Morgan Family. The founders of the Blue Creek Ranch. I am a huge fan of the True Cover series and I really wanted to see how it all started. Mattie and Brady endured a lot of hardship and loss, but didn’t lose their faith. They realized that God was their Provider, Sustainer, Comforter, and their absolute everything. If you have read the True Cover series, you will see where Sam gets his awesome qualities.

They are provided every opportunity their father's amassed wealth can buy: travel, private tutors, and entrance into the inner social circles of Victorian era England.  Their world is shaken however when their father summons them back to America after the financial panic of 1873 to help rebuild the family fortune in the Adirondack wilderness.

It was fun to read about the rich history of the Adirondack development and the Great camps built by the wealthy, in an interesting novel about Camp Pine Knot on Raquette Lake. It has always been a favorite place of mine and is a wonderful setting for this story about William West Durant. Sheila Meyers ties the past in with the present by following parallel lives in a fascinating way. Anyone would enjoy this book, especially those who love the Adirondacks!

I will turn 90 in November and my 4 children decided to each spend a week with me at our cabin on the Raquette River near Tupper Lake that was built in 1971 but not completely finished. As a young Family we had enjoyed Camping at Eighth Lake,Golden Beach,Corey's at Indian Carry with the Whittum Family at Camp Hiawatha. We spent many hours visiting the Great Camps with Adirondack Discovery Group and spent many a Sunday morning at Chapel Island Services where I once replaced the church Bell with my rendition of Amazing Grace on the Bagpipes ! Over the years I got to know the operators of Camp Sagamore, the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain, the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum at Saranac Lake and witnessed the American defeat of the Russian Hockey team at the last Olympics in Lake Placid. All this explains my keen interest in the area.I was struck by the author's use of time shifting from the 1800's to almost the present to elucidate an issue and the use of an old Diary to fill in some myths that had grown over the years. She has a gift in unravelling complicated personalities. I was very fortunate to meet her in person at the recent Book Fair at Hoss's in Long Lake. If you want answers to questions dealing with WW Durant, this is the book for you ! P.J.Maloney
