In his first nine years as a teacher, Brendan Halpin goes from wide-eyed idealist to cynical, heartbroken idealist. Unique among teaching memoirs, Losing My Faculties is not the story of a heroic teacher who transforms the lives of his hardbitten students; rather, it's the inspirational and often unpretty truth about people who choose to get up ridiculously early day after day and year after year to go stand in front of teenagers. It's also a rarely seen all-access view of both suburban and urban education, including the ugly truth behind the mythology at a much-hyped charter school.

Costa While Halpin's candid account of teaching in the public schools of Massachusetts is by no means all warm and fuzzy, it is a poignant testament of one man's love of teaching. As a public school music teacher (and a first year at that), I found constant affirmation in reading Halpin's stories of the rollercoaster ride of American education. From student teaching dramas and locating a first job to dealing with administrative conflicts and parents, this book covers it all...and in a very informal, interior monologue kind of way. It is this journal-esque way of writing that really drives the story. I was pleased that despite Halpin's english teacher credentials, he was more than comfortable to write the book in a more relaxed style, complete with slang, colloquialisms, and less-than-perfect grammar. The book, despite its non-heroic ending, has inspired me and my teaching.

Maloney Losing My FacultiesBy Brendan HalpinHardly a day passes that we don't read an article or hear a story about schools. Most often, we hear what's wrong with schools. Reports of promised reform and fix-it-once-and-for-all solutions are commonplace. And one has to wonder after a while, if these magical solutions are finally going to fix things, then why do we continue to hear about how bad schools are year after year after year?Far too absent among the reports of what's wrong with education are the voices of teachers who spend day after day, year after year, in the schools that outsiders are always promising to reform!Teaching is a special calling. It is not a profession one enters for the money, nor for the prestige (and certainly not -- contrary to oft-heard cynic's explanation -- for the easy life, clean work and summers off!)By and large, most teachers want to do a good job. They want their students to learn and they try to do their very best to achieve those ends.Losing My Faculties is the story of one very committed teacher who truly considers teaching to be a special and important vocation. And it is also a story of teaching as a profession that can't help but make the person choosing it as a lifework to wonder about their sanity from time to time.Author Brendan Halpin tells his own story of his journey through his first eight years as a teacher in Boston area schools. This is Halpin's chronicle of his beginning years as he works in four different schools across the span the book. He tells of his good experiences with his students, his classes that are great. He acknowledges his failures and shortcomings as a teacher and he clearly considers what he, as one teacher, can continue to do to try to improve.Brendan Halpin tells his story in a straightforward almost conversational way. One can imagine sitting with a friend as he relays the story of work across a series of years. The result is a comical, blunt and spirited book that always shows a profound concern for kids. There is no question but that Brendan Halpin should be a teacher. He;s a natural! Sadly, I could easily see him hanging up his schoolbag and finding himself a new path on which to travel. There is ample evidence that schools indeed need to get back to basics and stop the business of constantly seeking to start over again. Education is big business for some. Reform is an industry into itself. Testing is a monopoly. There are as many educational experts and consultants as there are schools in this country! Few of these businesses are truly concerned about improving education. If legislators and school leaders truly want to make improvements in schools, they need to start with hiring, paying and affirming good teachers. Start spending time with teachers. Listen to them. Work side by side with them for a while. If someone regularly told me how lousy I was, or how bad everyone in my profession was, it wouldn't take me very long to get discouraged. We have far too many discouraged teachers in this country! We lose way too many new teachers each year because they are never given the kind of support and mentoring they need to become great teachers.Yes, there are poor teachers. Get rid of them! Keep the schools as simple as possible. And, above all, yes, return to the basics. History long demonstrates to us that gimmicks aren't the answer. Excellent education happens where a safe and caring environment is created for kids to learn. Success happens where there are dedicated teachers with high expectations who care about their students. Excellent education isn't always found in affuent school districts or in the most modern of schools. It is found where competent people care, work hard and challenge their students to do the same. In these schools there is a fundamental affirmation for the sacred calling that teaching is for anyone who undertakes its work. And, the results show.As Brendan Halpin chronicles his journey through the often-unpleasant start of his career, he indirectly tells us just what is wrong with education. Perhaps we need to listen more carefully to his story, and the stories of many others who have the courage and energy to do this same work with America's future on a daily basis. Stop paying the testing companies. Halt the consultancies. Forget the experts. We have them in our schools. Put some of the money being wasted on outsiders back into the schools. And, then and only then will education see true reform!Highly recommended.Daniel J. MaloneySaint Paul, Minnesota, USA

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. School sucks By Gerald A. Heverly Reading Faculties I was reminded of something Kurt Vonnegut said of Hunter Thompson: " I am told that {Thompson}...is being eaten alive by tinhorn politicians. The disease is fatal. There is no know cure...let all those who feel that Americans can be easily led to beauty as to ugliness, to truth as to public relations, to joy as to bitterness, be said to be suffering from Hunter Thompson's disease." Brendan Halpin spent {at least} eight years in the Massachusetts public schools believing in the salutary effects of education on the teenage soul. That alone qualifies him as a Hunter Thompson disease carrier. As a teacher I found Faculties a gripping read, filled with all the familiar feelings (sleepless weekday nights; fury at lazy, self-important administrators; bewilderment at colleagues more interested in real estate than real teaching). I rooted for the author to find the Holy Grail, the school with good people doing good. Halpin tells the story as if he'd channeled one of the teenagers in his Boston-area classrooms. It's full of profanity and slang and long parenthetical asides that almost sidetrack the narrative. But he, mostly, pulls it off. Enough that anyone interested in being the fly-on-the-wall of a high school will find this account compelling. Ironically Halpin cites the very characteristic that undermines the power of his story: "The {kids} papers kind of suck...mostly because they are long on opinions and short on evidence," he laments early in his career. We meet myriad characters in Halpin's world but very few, if any, are painted with enough detail for the reader to feel confident that they should share the author's {often-scathing} judgments. On almost every page I found myself talking to the print, saying, "Yeah, I know that jerk. We have one of those in my school, too!" And yet, despite Halpin's repeated confessions of his own failings the reader still is left with a nagging feeling that some of his villains might really be heroes (and Halpin occasionally switches sides himself, condemning people in later pages who were allies in earlier episodes). For anyone who likes this kind of thing I'd recommend four other books of similar theme: Shut up and Let the Lady Teach by a Newsday reporter, Emily Sachar covers the New York City school woes with lots more detail. True Notebooks by Mark Salzman spells out one year in a Los Angeles school by a teacher of writing. Another Planet is writer Elinor Burkett's year in a Minnesota suburban high school. None of these has Halpin's energy but each has the advantage of greater specificity. And if you are looking for prescriptions for ameliorating the messes detailed in these books I'd tell you to read anything by John Taylor Gatto, John Holt or Frank Smith. But don't hold your breath. Neither Halpin's book, nor the American secondary education system have, at present, a happy ending.

The Renards of Boston live a charmed life in the bustling harbor town. The eldest daughter, Deborah, a beauty from the North Square, could have any beau of her choosing but pines for only one, the handsome Andrew. Together they take advantage of any opportunity to enter into each other's embrace: a lavish ball, a crowded choir loft, even a darkened corner of his mother's cafe. Now her father's approval must be sought. Her papa, Daniel is justifiably proud of his silversmith business, which he operates with Deborah's twin, David. They see themselves as patriots, attending Sons Of Liberty meetings at night. And naively Daniel feels the liberty they seek from the British Crown can be sought diplomatically without the bloodshed a revolution would usually produce. When an unruly mob boards three British vessels and pours their cargo into the harbor, the town wakes up one morning to find English war vessels drawing into their harbor. And they soon learn that the liberty they long for will not be earned without bringing their lovely town to the brink of destruction.

By Mary Frances The Scourge of Boston gives the reader a good picture of how the lives of the people of Boston were effected by the events leading up to the Revolutionary War. The Renard family must cope with many challenges after the Boston Tea Party brings the British military to occupy their city. It is quite a shock when they learn that they must give up rooms in their home to young British soldiers. Then the parents become very worried as their son becomes involved with the Sons of Liberty. They are ultimately forced to flee Boston and, sadly, upon their return find much of their city destroyed. The author has researched the period very well. She weaves the history of the times well with the stories of the young girls coming of age. Her anecdotes about customs of the time, like tarring and feathering, give the reader a good sense of the period. Her detailed description of the drinks at the bar made me smile.Well written, enjoyable characters, such a pleasant way to learn about our country's history!

A slave named Jessie endured a horrible life and ill treatment; the catalyst for him to escape the Mason plantation with his family. His wife and oldest daughter had been subjected to inhumane indignities and the only possible solution was to remove the family from that place. His family was to be separated and sent to different plantations, but Jessie was determined to keep them together. Although not the best decision to make, at least not at that time, it produced an outcome no one could have imagined and set forth a series of events that were both unbelievable and earth shattering. After many years, the oldest child, Josie, inexplicably emerges from death. Ultimately, that reemergence affects the lives of all those with whom Josie comes in contact. Her very presence gives everyone a reason to reflect, and to learn the plight of those slaves who inhabited the Mason Plantation. But no one is affected more than the Mason family of today... Emarie Randle, the oldest of eight children born to Gloria Jackson in 1942 at New York City’s Harlem Hospital, was raised in Evanston, Illinois, just outside of Chicago, in a time and place where you were truly raised by a village. Graduating from Evanston Township High School, her mother and aunt struggled against severe money shortages to send her to Tennessee A&I State University. Emarie proudly graduated in August 1964 with a degree in Health and Physical Education. That same year, she married Stanley R. Randle, a highly rated football player from San Antonio, Texas. Relocating to Texas, she spent the next thirty-eight years teaching and coaching. Following her retirement in 2003, Emarie spent two years traveling and trying to decide what the next chapter of her life would bring. Besides entering the Real Estate field, which allows her to stay active and be in contact with other people, she also pursued a career in writing. The Josie Effect is just one result of her “retirement”.

Review This new edition has more stories and photos and makes for a fine coffee table addition to any surfer’s collection. . . . Lopez creates a space for the people around him to feel good. He takes the time to reflect on what surfing has brought him in life and reminds us to take the time to do the same. Santa Cruz SentinelGerry Lopez writes as beautifully as he bottom turns. Each chapter of Surf Is Where You Find It is a wave ridden or written by one of the most stylish humans to ever pick up a board or a pen. Gerry has been one of my heroes since I was a keiki and the more time I have spent with him the more my admiration of him has grown. Whether he is talking about memories of growing up bare foot during the sugar cane days of Hawai'i, wild experiences with some of the greatest characters in surfing's history, or early uncharted expeditions to the best waves in the world, every story has something the reader can take away and apply to their own life. Reading Surf Is Where You Find It made me feel proud to be a surfer again. I hope anyone who loves the ocean will read this book and be reminded of what riding waves is all about. -- Jack JohnsonThere will never be another Gerry Lopez, nor a more mandatory book to have on your shelf than Surf Is Where You Find It. -- Eastern Surf Reviews

By Zendicant Pangolin This book reads a lot like the author, one suspects, which makes sense because it is something like an autobiography as told in a series of vignettes beginning with a child playing in the waters of Waikiki Beach and closing at a Javan reef break 60 years later. In between time we are held in thrall by the story-telling ability of the author. It probably isn't accurate to say that he is a natural story-teller, but his narratives read very naturally. One can tell that Mr. Lopez is not a full-time author, but also he knows how to turn a phrase and writes with intention. These are not the ramblings of a washed up surf doggie. This is a philosophical book that happens to be told with skill and wit by a man who seems to have a special affection for 'characters'.To those of you who surf, the descriptions of getting caught inside and pounded, or thrown down upon the hard surfaces of a coral reef and held down a lung-burstingly long time will have your stomach churning. Some of his talk story adventures caused all of the anxiety I'd left behind years and years ago to leap back into my throat from the pit of my stomach, but they also nourished long-suppressed feelings of the joy and contentment that a perfectly timed take off and bottom turn cause. The action takes place mainly in Hawaii, and mostly on the North Shore, but really everywhere: Town-side, Maui, Bali, Java, Oregon, even Chile, a little about Cali and Oz, and includes a cast of names that everybody of a certain surfing age will know and many that even younger surfers should recognize. While the stories about them are super entertaining and will sometimes have you hooting and laughing aloud, the author uses them to tell his over-arching story about experiencing life through surf: A great life.In a recent talk that Mr. Lopez gave at the PDX Patagonia, he teased that he is working on a new book that will discuss more fully the implications of the statement that "surf is where you find it," in the context of being present in the moment. He also spoke about the "Aloha Spirit."It occurred to me that Gerry Lopez is, or is becoming a Guru, or Dukun; anyway, that he may be an enlightened being. If he is able to synthesize his stated belief in destiny, being present in the moment, and the nature of Aloha Spirit with as deft a touch as he has shown writing this book, he will certainly change lives. Finally, I would like to speak to the physical Hard Cover book itself: It is Made in China in approx. 416 pps (6.75" x 9.75"). Ordinarily, China is about the last place one would go to publish a quality book. This one so far exceeded my preconceived notions that I have to take my hat off to the publisher, Patagonia, and the printer. The covers are clean, tight and evidently flawless. The paper likewise looks and feels to be of high quality, and even the color and b&w illustrations are very well reproduced (lots and lots of pictures). Granted, I did find the occasional spot and ink smear, and the spine is slightly cocked, but overall I am satisfied with the quality and presentation of the physical book. This book is not just for surfers. Anybody who likes to read good writing about life's adventures will enjoy it. People on a spiritual quest might also be affected by it.

By Jim C The book is 5 stars - the Kindle Edition is 1 star. If you buy the Kindle version - you are getting a fraction of an excellent book that lacks all the chapters and many, many of the amazing pictures in the book. I first bought the kindle version, loved it and then bought the book as a gift for a friend and I was shocked looking at the book at what is NOT IN THE KINDLE Version. Huh?I am not a surfer but a climber but loved the stories in the book.If Amazon is going to sell a Kindle version - they need to be upfront and tell the buyer what they are not getting compared to the original book form.

The north shore of Hawaii was one of his favorite spots. He spent several evenings reading and was totally absorbed in this book.He truly enjoyed it. I suggested he write a review, He said, "You do it andgive it a 5 stars." Done!

Henry VIII of England seeks his way home – into the arms of his long-lost lover

On the 27th of January, 1547 AD, at eleven o'clock at night, Henry VIII is mere three hours from his death. On his deathbed, he only pines to behold his true love for one more time. To catch but a glimpse of Adhamh's face – that he desires above all things. For his whole life fearful of God, he would now give his mind, body, and soul to the Devil if the Dark Lord promised him but one moment with his lost lover. Only his heart Henry could not give, for Adhamh has it in his keeping. It has always been so, from the day they met. And there the story of their star-crossed love truly begins. In the hot August of the year 1521 AD, England lazily revels in its still young King Henry VIII, the most accomplished and the handsomest monarch of the Christendom. For whole the world, Henry plays the King who lacks nothing, and who fears nobody save God. Deep inside, he is a man tormented by dark secrets shrouding his marriage, tortured by fears for the fate of his dynasty. His summer morning is not filled with idle delight; it brims with barely concealed terrors – until the moment when God sends him a sign: a wolf trapped in the royal chapel. From the first heartbeat of the unexpected encounter, the beast exudes an aura of unalloyed loyalty vested in Henry alone. Overcome with the sight of the wolf's unconditional surrender into his hands, Henry believes him to be a messenger of God and spares his life. But... a human heart beats in the wolf's chest. Adhamh the Seventh, the only son of the House of Svar, the Margrave at Zuria Labarra is the second most powerful man after the King of Cerbeden – and a werewolf cast out of his world as a punishment for a fateful failure. The High Immortal who so sentenced him to die as the Devil's Own knew nothing about an uncanny resemblance between the King of England and the King of Cerbeden. Neither does Adhamh. In Henry, he sees his own beloved liege lord, whom he could never harm. The moment of his surrender gives birth to a new unbreakable bond and triggers a chain of inescapable events. The affection that arises between them faces constant dangers, both seen and unseen. Constraints placed on them by social norms and Henry's religious beliefs can be overcome, but what if Adhamh is yanked back into his own world one day? This ever-present peril cannot be provided for. Nor is it the darkest threat lurking close. If you love Henry VIII and like a touch of supernatural fantasy in your fiction, avail yourself of this autobiography that stays true to the cultural realities and historical facts of his time, twining them seamlessly with imagination and surprising motivations for well-known events. Through Henry's memories, you can now witness the power of a bond that changed him, and through his deeds the all of England, forever. Genres: Henry VIII of England: a fictional autobiography with supernatural aspects, gay historical drama, gay werewolf shifter romance

If you thought that your love life was difficult, let the lyrical world of S. Joy P prove you otherwise! In her world, love is much more complicated because one of the men at the center of the love story is a renowned king and the other, a handsome, mysterious werewolf. The name of this king happens to be Henry Tudor. In a nutshell, We, King Henry VIII, Part I can be summarized as follows - the legendary King Henry VIII is in love with a werewolf named Adhamh, who is from another world! It is a historical romance, written in lyrical prose, with a heavy dose of supernatural elements. As my nickname implies, I am a fan of Tudor history, especially history related to Henry Tudor. Given this affinity, it was a no-brainer for me to download this book on to my Kindle. However, even before reading the book, I was apprehensive about how I would like the most controversial aspect of it - a bisexual King Henry VIII. Then to my absolute surprise I found that the object of his interest was a werewolf. As I am a fan of werewolf romances, the book, which combines two of my interests, was an interesting read.As the book is styled as an autobiography, it is from King Henry's point-of-view (POV). It starts with him on his deathbed longing for his beloved Adhamh. Then, you are taken to 1521 where they meet and the story unfolds through a series of recollections. In this historical supernatural romance, I met many characters that I was familiar with, such as Charles Brandon, Katherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, and Cardinal Wolsey. In many ways, I was familiar with this world as the author took care to depict the times accurately. However, I did not like some of the character portrayals until I remembered that it was Henry's POV that I was reading. This book is designed as the first installment in a multi-volume epic. It ends in 1523 with the suspense created by a missing Adhamh, who was perhaps pulled back into his mysterious other world.S. Joy P.'s writing style is very lyrical. I became interested in the style after reading Dragon's Bounty (DB), another historical fantasy adventure starring Vlad Dracula and Love, the mortal incarnation of the God of love. Although this book doesn't have the emotional intensity of DB, which is set within the backdrop of war, it is still an exciting read. What makes it so is not only the lyrical style of the author, but also the romance of an unusual love story, which combines the comforting familiarity of the Tudor background with the adventure of a supernatural experience. The author has remained true to the spirit of King Henry and his court. Henry's obsessions (e.g., his quest for a son and heir, his doubts regarding the legality of his marriage to his brother's widow, his search for love, and his relationship with his faith) are depicted well, so is his relationship with his best friend and brother-in-law Charles Brandon and favorite sister Mary. It is apparent that the author has taken great trouble to research the traditions and customs of Henry's court. How did I overcome my apprehension of a bisexual Henry? With a smile, as he seemed to have troubles with his guy just like he has had them with his wives... All kidding aside, if you want to escape to the world of a historical supernatural romance, I would highly recommend this book.

Joy P.’s We, King Henry VIII is a book that came at me out of nowhere and proceeded, quite frankly, to impress me from beginning to end. What I know of King Henry VIII would fit on the head of a pin: A.) I know it wasn’t necessarily fortuitous to be his wife, and B.) I know he spent much of his reign balking at the strict edicts of the Roman Catholic Church. That’s the extent of it, so with regards to this book’s “controversial” label, I must say I don’t know enough about the subject at hand to find it particularly scandalous, but I will say the author has managed to take a monarch who, inarguably, has not been portrayed throughout history as a benign ruler, and made him the sympathetic hero of this novel, and, to a certain extent, also portrays Henry Tudor as the victim of sorts in the story—a pawn of his duty to crown and country, to his God, to the women he’d married in hopes of producing a male heir to the throne, as well as to his love for Sir Adhamh Svar. One of the things I found most appealing about this novel is the author’s writing style, which is at times poetic and at the same time feels utterly organic to the 16th century; not in that the narrative and dialogue are filled with thous and forsooths and yea verilys, which would make it tedious to some of us contemporary readers, but that the author’s use of opulent language and lush dialogue along with a descriptive prose supports and enhances the historical setting, which effectively sweeps us into the court of Henry VIII. I not only appreciated the author’s attention to detail but also salute the inspiration that struck which sent the story headlong into the realm of speculative fiction and gave it its supernatural twist. We, King Henry VIII is a deathbed confessional, told in large part through flashbacks, of Henry, the man in the prime of his life and in the midst of his first marriage to Catherine of Aragon when he is visited upon by a wolf. Whether this is an evil omen or divine blessing is unclear, most especially once it’s revealed the wolf is, in truth, a man—Adhamh—and he is not of the realm which Henry rules. Indeed, he is not even of the world in which this story takes place.Within these flashbacks, we also see Henry as a loving father even as the bloom has withered and fallen off the rose of his marriage to Catherine, two things being made clear; the first, that Catherine did not come to their marriage bed a virgin; the second being that infidelity has left Henry in the painful throes of a sexually transmitted disease, which is when his suspicions are aroused by his wolf and the certainty the animal is something other, as he leads His Grace to a remedy for his discomfort that, quite literally, saves the king’s manhood. As the bond between Henry and Adhamh strengthens, Adhamh’s influence over the king becomes evident as well, in the forbidden thoughts and deeds Henry’s heart leads him toward. The story takes a poignant turn amidst the court intrigue and royal politics, in which we see Henry war with his love for Adhamh and his fidelity to God. We also see his initial steps toward dissolving his marriage to Catherine, for which Adhamh becomes a trusted and useful advisor. In this first installment of the series, we are also treated to the introduction of Lady Anne Boleyn, the woman about whom Adhamh also has some strong opinions. And the woman whose fate we are, of course, all too familiar with.Because We, King Henry VIII is book one in a series, there is no resolution to the conflict introduced in this novel. If you don’t enjoy the “to be continued” that happens in episodic storytelling, consider this a small inconvenience to the overall grandeur of the story being told. This book left me with a “just when I thought I’d read it all…” sense of satisfaction that I’d come across something a bit unique in the gay fiction genre: one part reality, one part history lesson, one part fantasy, and one-hundred percent intriguing.

Joy has a gift writing this time period By InkedRainbowReads FourStarsHenry VIII has all the beloved characters from the Tudor era, including the big man himself, Anne Boylen, Catherine, lovers and courtiers. S. Joy has a gift writing this time period. Everything feels authentic. Tied to its time, not re-invented for our sensibilities. I loved it.I got sucked into Henry's realistically religious furvor and his love of the hunt--things I don't usually get to read about. The politics of court dragged on a little bit, especially near the end, but the devotion to realism (or created realism) has to be applauded. It's like the very best of fanfic. It takes an impossibly rigid, familiar world and puts a sexy werewolf into it.Adhamh the Shifter's story is compelling as well, although we don't learn much about it in this first book. The mystery is as intriguing as the Tudors themselves. This is great historical fiction. One star off for the cliffhanger ending and some filler that didn't captivate me, but for the most part, We, King Henry VIII Part 1 is an adventure.I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.C.E. An Amazon Best Seller, Michael Jordan: The Inspiring Story of One of Basketball’s Greatest Players, outlines the inspirational story of basketball's superstar, Michael Jordan.

This short unauthorized biography of Michael Jordan highlights his journey so far in the NBA from once being passed until the 3rd overall pick to becoming a six-time NBA champion.

Few players have shaped so much of the game of basketball as Michael Jordan. It does not take a basketball fanatic to recognize and respect the name of Michael Jordan. Around the world, fans continue to aspire to become Jordan due to the incredible legacy he left behind on the Bulls organization and the game itself.

Read on to learn about Michael Jordan’ journey into the league, his championship campaigns alongside Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Phil Jackson, as well as much more.

Here is a preview of what is inside this book:

  • Childhood and Early Life
  • College Years at UNC
  • Michael’s NBA Career
  • Baseball in Birmingham
  • Olympic Gold Standard
  • Michael Jordan’s Legacy & Future

An excerpt from the book:

When it comes to sports in Chicago, there is a list of athletes whose names are synonymous with their respective sport – Walter Payton of the National Football League’s Bears, “Mr. Cub” Ernie Banks in Major League Baseball, or the “Golden Jet” Bobby Hull for the Blackhawks. However, none of them ever won as many accolades like Michael Jordan has during his 15 years in the National Basketball Association with the Chicago Bulls. Even though he played two years of his career with the Washington Wizards, Jordan will always be remembered for wearing the red and black in Chicago and joining the list of aforementioned Chicago sports legends.

Nearly 20 years after his final season with the Bulls, there’s now a bronze sculpture showing Jordan’s infamous “jumpman” pose in front of the United Center – a place that many consider “the house that Jordan built.” But many in Chicago will never forget his name for bringing six championships to the city within the 1990s. There are still fans that wear his iconic number 23 uniform and hold current stars like Derrick Rose to the same expectations as the Bulls continue to return to the glory from 20 years ago.

There’s a reason Jordan built up one of the greatest careers that anyone has ever seen, not only the NBA, but throughout professional sports. His name also transcended into clothing, pop culture, movies, music, and other sports like baseball. Still, it all starts with everything he’s accomplished in basketball – with more than 32,000 points, six Most Valuable Player awards, and more several individual distinctions for both offense and defense.

Jordan once said that basketball “has been everything. My place of refuge, place I’ve always gone where I needed comfort and peace. It’s been the site of intense pain and the most intense feelings of joy and satisfaction.”

By Gallart This book, Michael Jordan: The Inspiring Story of One of Basketball's Greatest Players, is a must-read for anyone looking to know more about Michael Jordon. It is a concise read, yet chock-full of great content and jam-packed with detailed, solid facts. This story is an example of true determination and believing in yourself when no one else seems to. The author details every phase of Michael Jordan’s life, from his childhood in Wilmington, North Carolina and his parent’s resolve in raising bright and successful children to his fruitful career in the NBA and his brief time in baseball, showing how he came to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time. This was genuinely a very enjoyable read. If you’re a fan of basketball, and even if you aren’t, I truly recommend this book for anyone wishing to attain more knowledge and inspiration.

However, this book is both informative and enjoyable. It is detailed--covering Michael Jordan's life from his early childhood to his career, and to his legacy and future--and well-researched, but the author stayed clear of being pedantic, making this an accessible and easy read. This would be a great gift for the sports fanatic in your life or just for your own enjoyment!

By ROSALIN DELGADO Nowadays, when it comes to basketball the name on everybody’s lips is Lebron James. However, when I was growing up, if there was one athlete my friends and I looked up to with complete and utter awe, it was Michael Jordan. He represented what could be accomplished when you fully immersed yourself into becoming the best that you could be. Having said this, reading ‘Michael Jordan: The Inspiring Story of One of Basketball's Greatest Players’ gave me a much deeper insight than I had ever known about the man who inspired us to follow aspirations. An avid reader, I love books, but usually tend to stay far away from biographies because they often come off stuffy and read like a list of facts with no genuine flow. Geoffrey’s unauthorized biography of Michael Jordan, however, is written in a way that makes you want to (digitally) turn the next page, just to find out more about a man who was and continues to be one of the most amazing athletes to enter the arena of sports. You feel like you are sitting with a friend who sat on the sidelines catching all of Michael’s moments, great or small, listening to him as he recounts every one of them hooking you in every step of the way. Definitely a great book to check out if you want to know more about the man who made the #23 the thing of legends.

Fogleman I may be getting sappy in my old age, but there were several times I cried with Deana while reading this book! I've read this entire series and gotten really attached to Deana and her family and friends. Mrs. Polf has taken real letters from WWII and woven a beautiful story into the history and real events of the 1940′s. I was honestly picturing the clothing, scenes, and planes of that time. The detail she goes into of how the drafting and designing of those great machines is amazing. I could almost picture myself watching Howard Hughes fussing over the blueprints! At times, I had to stop and ask Hubby about certain things. The boys and I got out our big book of Airplanes to look up different ones. We were amazed! This was an incredible read I truly enjoyed! (I received a free digital copy from the author but this is an honest review.)

By grtlyblesd I received an ARC for review purposes. The book starts out action packed, as a female pilot is forced to make an emergency landing in a blizzard on the side of a mountain. You can imagine her husband's concern when she goes missing, especially since she's pregnant!Fortunately, Dena lands safely and is well cared for by the strangers who spot her plane, and she gets reunited with her family. The book talks a lot about Carl's job in the aviation industry. Their baby arrives safely, and is a girl, to everyone's delight. They have twin boys from Dena's first marriage. With Dena being a pilot, and Carl an executive, the family travels a lot more than most people in the WW2 era.The book weaves a timeline of historical events into a family story. I found the reactions of the characters to various happenings touching and thought provoking. It's easy to see, on this side of history, that the war in Europe would end with the death of Hitler and Mussolini, but for the people living in that time period, it represented still more uncertainty.
