About the Author Paul Boyd-Batstone, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Language and Literacy at California State University, Long Beach in the Department of Teacher Education. He taught for over 15 years as a Spanish/English bilingual teacher in elementary settings and initiated one of the first Cambodian, Khmer-speaking bilingual programs in the country. He has published numerous articles and texts.

By providing step-by-step details and examples, Dr. Boyd-Batstone leads teachers through a process of understanding the who, what, where, when, and how of second language development, offering not only a practical depiction of what each level can understand and do, but also how teachers can meet students where they are and help them progress to the next level. Because of its versatility, this is an indispensable tool for teachers of all subjects and grade levels, not just ESL specialists (it is great for them, too, though!). I highly recommend this book and have adopted it for a practicum course I teach for pre-service teachers.
