By Joyce Nutta K-12 teachers with English learners in their classrooms need research-based, practical guidance on supporting these students' attainment of rigorous standards, and they can find it in Dr. Paul Boyd-Batstone's terrific new book. Written in an engaging and clear tone, Helping English Language Learners Meet the Common Core introduces a very powerful tool for classroom assessment of students' English proficiency and for the adaptation of curriculum and instruction to meet their needs, the Classroom Assessment of Language Levels. By providing step-by-step details and examples, Dr. Boyd-Batstone leads teachers through a process of understanding the who, what, where, when, and how of second language development, offering not only a practical depiction of what each level can understand and do, but also how teachers can meet students where they are and help them progress to the next level. Because of its versatility, this is an indispensable tool for teachers of all subjects and grade levels, not just ESL specialists (it is great for them, too, though!). I highly recommend this book and have adopted it for a practicum course I teach for pre-service teachers.

Follow lifelong friends Catholic Markus and Jewish Levi in this sweeping historic family saga-the story of two young men in the years before World War I. As young Imperial German soldiers in 1900, battling with other Europeans besieged in Peking during the Boxer Rebellion, Markus and Levi find themselves in dire circumstances. Markus abandons the legation's relative safety for a dangerous cross-country adventure to find his love, the beautiful Li Ling. Tragedy interrupts their romance and he soon finds himself escaping with Sun Yat Sen downriver on a pirated Chinese mail boat. He reunites with his friend Levi after the battle of Peking, and the two encounter danger and adventure on their return by ship to Germany. A shark attack off New Guinea and a sexual bacchanal with Samoan natives and icebergs in the south Atlantic challenge the two friends. Their homeward ship stops in Uruguay, where Levi meets his future wife, Katherina Obermaier, a beautiful young Jewish girl bound for university in Berlin. Home again in Bavaria, Levi returns to his ancestral home Kalvarianhof, a grand estate deep in the forests outside of Munich, and Markus to his home in the city. It is the time of 'Belle Epoch', the 'Beautiful Era' in Europe. Still, Markus and Levi and their families face challenges and heartbreak- and a forbidden love affair that threatens to tear apart the young men's friendship. The story continues in Book II of this four-part series, where the two friends find themselves far from the trenches of France on the eve of World War I. In the splendors and perils of the vastness of Africa, Markus and Levi find romance, hardship and tragedy that endangers their very survival.

Most readers are not historians, and gain very little from reading a book that expects them to understand the intricacies of the locations, fashion, and political climate of a given era. But a truly great historical fiction novel will not demand such prior knowledge. Instead, the author will utilize such depth of description that the reader is almost left wondering if the author had somehow been present for the events described. Every character will feel like a real person, someone relatable, as if they were someone we could still meet today. This book accomplishes such a feat. Most of this can be attributed to the two main characters, a young Catholic man by the name of Markus Mathias and a young Jewish man by the name of Solomon Levi. Lancers in the Imperial German East Asian Expeditionary Force, the two friends are unique in more ways than just their faith. This makes their journey all the more compelling as we watch them engage in battle, fall in love, and face numerous intriguing stops along their journey home. Those of us with less historical education may sometimes fall prey to the belief that live abroad was easy in the years before the Great War. The story of Markus and Levi challenges that very notion. This is not just a story of friendship, although that is certainly a major element of the story. The two become separated at times, which is when the uniqueness of their characters is given a chance to truly shine. And this is perhaps one of the most important story elements if we are expected to read three more books in this series. Given the wide range of geography and chronology covered by this first volume, it would appear as if subsequent books will be well worth the minor cost of these books. Those looking for an intriguing, character-driven journey through history cannot go wrong with “Kalvarianhof.”

Hubbard Walter Soellner has spun an interesting, fast-moving tale in Kalvarianhoff, told in an authentic historical setting. His descriptions of settings and scenes successfully transports one to the center of whatever is happening at the time.I was drawn in by the historically accurate description of European and American involvement in China's Boxer Rebellion. Soellner spends some time explaining the reasons for that involvement, and a little of China's reasons for resisting the foreign presence. Most of this was done via interactions between German soldiers, the central characters of the novel. I would have like more background and nuance about this important event, perhaps by recreating higher level discussions among officers and/or diplomats, to have revealed more of the complexity of the conflict. But, the author did succeed in whetting the appetite of the those curious enough about history to find out more on their own.He adds to the authenticity of the story by bringing in actual historical characters, such as Sun Yat Sen, and some of the cultural, scientific, sexual, racial, and geographical realities of the time --- from China, to the Pacific Islands, and to parts of South America and Western Africa. It's a broad sweep of story telling that morphs from action-oriented, geo political to romantic. It keeps you turning the pages by connecting all the unfolding pieces through through the actions and thoughts of steadfast central characters. So, I am left wanting to know more about those characters and how the societies they live in will evolve. The next book has the opportunity to be even more interesting, given that the focus should be on a smaller part of the globe, about to experience wars, holocausts, and globe-changing political movements. If Soellner can both continue to give us his photographic physical descriptions and help us understand and feel the reasons for these events through his characters, we will be well rewarded.

Hard to put down.Interesting and evolving main characters drag others in as time marches on and the world changes about them. This book covers roughly 1900-1910, the Boxer Rebellion, those new-fangled automobiles, development of airplanes and travel by ships and trains; women allowed into colleges and (growing) anti-Semitic attitudes. You get carried back to the times and the locales. China, Pacific Islands, South America, Africa and Europe are described in engaging detail. You feel you are there with them and they are people you'd like to hang out with. There are non-stop surprises: addiction, cannibals, sharks, hyenas, car and plane and ship crashes keep jumping off the next page. The background and history are introduced in a natural way that makes you feel educated without having to study.Full Disclosure: I know the author and will be discussing the sex scenes next time we get together.

San Francisco is infested. Crime stains the streets, and the SFPD battles to keep it under control. Among the department’s finest, Detective Patricia Ryder marches to her own drum, solving cases through a combination of balls and brains. But a case comes across Ryder’s desk that leaves even the brazen detective at a loss. Multiple victims ranging in ages and backgrounds have all been found beheaded, apparently without connecting motive. From children to pensioners, the results remain the same. What kind of callous beast could perform such atrocious acts? And then she meets him. The killer mouths a tale so incredible that Ryder is forced to laugh it off. But then he proves himself by doing the impossible. Torn between her need for facts and her inability to deny what she sees with her own eyes, Ryder teams up with a man she believes is a sociopath in order to thwart a being of colossal power, something so ancient it makes Earth seem like a newborn. It is hungry. It is relentless. It has its sights set on our world. And only a cop and a killer stand in its way.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The first sentence cracked me up and set the tone for a great read. By T.W. Barton This is the second book by the author I've read. The first was Blacklisted. It’s a military thriller that I've been waiting for the next book in the series. I saw this book in a Facebook post and thought I'd look into it. I'm always hesitant with strong female leads as they can tend to be more on the emotional side of storytelling, not that I'm a sexist or anything but...well I am a dude so...shoot people and blow stuff up and I'm a happy camper.I can say that in this case I had nothing to worry about. Patricia Ryder, the heroine of this series is a man's women....hmmm, well you know what I mean. There's a serial killer running around San Francisco. A particularly disturbed individual that decapitates his victims. If that wasn’t gruesome enough the crime scenes don't add up and no one seems to be able to explain why.If Ryder didn't have enough to deal with, trying to solve the murders, she has to put up with her male colleagues who would love nothing better than to see her gone. Roaring around town in a 1970 Doge Challenger lovingly named Susie-girl grabbed from the impound lot, she's on the hunt but this case is far from your normal homicidal maniac killing spree and it doesn't take long for her to come to the attention of the killer and Ryder has suddenly gone from the huntress to the hunted, or is she? There's a presence that wants into this world, our world, and it's not taking no for an answer. Ryder unknowingly has the power to stop it but will she believe? Will she be able to trust where logic says not to? What about her father showing up out of the blue even though he's been dead for a long time, never mind the fact that he's older than everyone thought, much older? San Fran and the world will never be the same.I had a hard time putting this book down. There are some really great lines from Ryder that had me laughing and shaking my head but I was glad that the author didn't try to force that humor in when we get into the meat of the story as some do.This is a very visual book, the items and places have just the right amount of description to form the mental image without going overboard in an attempt to fill pages. There's a twist at the end you don't see coming. Well written and well-hidden, that's the thing that kicks this book up a notch and ensures you're onboard for the next book in the series.I'd easily recommend this to readers of multiple genres because it fits well into many different ones.Good on ya Luke, Keep up the good work.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It's hard to tell if minutes or years have passed since I started this book By critterloo The whole book went by in a flash! This is not a short story, but by the time you reach the end of it, you feel as though the beginning of the story was years ago, but in reality, it was only a matter of hours that have passed because you failed to put the book down from the minute you started reading to the end of the story. There are so many facets to the story, too. There's so many ways that it can be developed. And the author is like a mind-reader. Every time I read something that caused me to pause and question, as though there were a hole in the plot, moments later he asks the same question. Typically when questions like the arise while I'm reading, the questions go unanswered. It could be that the author steered me toward asking that question, but the part of the story that it completes is essential to the overall picture. It's like reading someone piecing a puzzle together. He doesn't travel down predictable plot lines. And just when you get comfortable thinking that there is a lull in the action - WHAM! he gets you with another round of twists and turns. Don't expect this story to come wrapped up with a pretty ribbon and bow at the end, either. You'll have as many questions leaving the story as you did when you entered. It's fantastic!

Phenomenal Journey into the sci-fi world By Danielle Russell Ryder: Demonsong is a book that takes you on a fantastic journey where one smart-mouthed cop will have to fight to save the world. But in a city where her friends are really her foes and her supposed enemies are her only allies, who can she trust at her back? Luke Romyn knows how to keep you guessing until the very last possible moment. I cannot wait to see what is in store for Ryder and her crew of misfit soldiers.

Niccolo Paganini (1782-1840) was the most celebrated musician in the first half of nineteenth century Europe. A consummate performer on the violin, his bold on-stage persona contrasted with his notoriously secretive private life. Groomed by his father to be a musician in the opera orchestras, he sought another existence as a virtuoso violinist. Mired in an obsessive quest to realize his own destiny, he recklessly pursued a life of excess. Decades later an American connection leads to revealing the true nature of this man, widely recognized as the first of his kind.

By Emily Beth Ronald Ellis is a master of the pen in this thoughtfully written impassioned novel of the talented yet tumultuous soul of Niccolo Paganini. His knowledge of music and music history makes for not only an entertaining read, but also an informative one! Reading "Niccolo: The Lone Wolf of Genova" is like traveling without the inconvenience and expense... a journey to 18th and 19th century Europe... a distinct yet eerily familiar time and space. I look forward to reading it again and again.

A doorway to the past reveals a warning for the future in this time-travel adventure by the author of Michael’s Wife  Just released from prison after serving time for a false drug charge, Aletha Kingman decamps to Telluride, Colorado, for a fresh start. One day when she’s sketching an abandoned miner’s shack, she encounters a young girl, Callie, who’s been transported from the turn of the century. Aletha follows Callie back in time to the rough-and-tumble mining town where the impoverished girl faces a future of disrepute and her brother Bram is caught in the bloody conflict between hard-working miners and their bosses. Together with her newfound friend, the enigmatic Cree, Aletha is determined to use her foresight from the future to make a difference in the past.   Suffused with the social and political history of the American West, The Threshold crosscuts between the disparate worlds of glitzy modern-day Telluride and its past incarnation as a gritty, turbulent mining town, brilliantly posing the question of whether we can—or should—alter the course of history.

By Imez Aletha is sketching a century old abandoned miner's shack when a little girl appears through a tiny rip in time and space. They only see each other for a second, and then the rip closes back. With Aletha's sketchbook still in 1900.The little girl Callie and the woman Aletha are tied together, rifts opening at random, enabling passing between the two times in the same town, a bloody troubled mining town in Callie's time and a tourist attraction in Aletha's. Aletha repeatedly gets trapped in the past, wanders a bit, then finds her way back.I love this story, but mostly because it is my favorite kind of story. I'm the kind of person who will stand in front of a support beam in an old building for an hour, touching it just because I know a person 80 years dead once also touched it. This book was written for me.It delivers the "what would I do if I got trapped in 1900?" adventure. And a few of the character story arcs, mostly the old time women and the crap they have to deal with, are really compelling.Otherwise, I hate to admit, it is a bit shambly. A lot of uninteresting characters yipping around the few good ones. The most common occurrence is a secondary character darting into a scene, saying "You're all crazy!" and darting out again. Happens over and over. And the story gets sidetracked with miner's revolts and union corruption. And the payoff is so small, so unsatisfying. Maybe there is a sequel that explains all the loosey goosey ends.Better to read Millhiser's "The Mirror" which delivers the same good stuff with almost none of the jumbly unsatisfying stuff.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The Threshold By Ann Bresnan "The Threshold" was a good story and held my interest. But if you haven't read "Mirror" by the author read "The Threshold" first. I was disappointed (and it really was good!) because "Mirror " was an exceptional story. In fact, my (adult) daughter was named Shay for the title character in "Mirror".

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A fun story. By SLB Very much enjoyed this book. The writing is good and crisp for my taste. Have since purchased other books from this author and found them equally as good.

Émile François Zola ( 2 April 1840 – 29 September 1902) is one of the greatest writers of the 19th century, and one of France’s best known citizens. In his life, Zola was the most important exemplar of the literary school of naturalism and a major figure in the political liberalization of France. Around the end of his life, Zola was instrumental in helping secure the exoneration of the falsely accused and convicted army officer Alfred Dreyfus, a victim of anti-Semitism. The Dreyfus Affair was encapsulated in the renowned newspaper headline J'Accuse.

The Fat and the Thin, by Emile Zola

Language Notes Text: English (translation) Original Language: French

About the Author ?mile Zola was a French writer who is recognized as an exemplar of literary naturalism and for his contributions to the development of theatrical naturalism. Zola s best-known literary works include the twenty-volume Les Rougon-Macquart, an epic work that examined the influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution on French society through the experiences of two families, the Rougons and the Macquarts. Other remarkable works by Zola include Contes ? Ninon, Les Myst?res de Marseille, and Th?r?se Raquin.

In addition to his literary contributions, Zola played a key role in the Dreyfus Affair of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His newspaper article J Accuse accused the highest levels of the French military and government of obstruction of justice and anti-semitism, for which he was convicted of libel in 1898. After a brief period of exile in England, Zola returned to France where he died in 1902. ?mile Zola is buried in the Panth?on alongside other esteemed literary figures Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas.

30 of 30 people found the following review helpful. One of the best of Zola's Rougon-Macquart books By Peter Dale This is a great book about the life around Les Halles in 19th century Paris. It looks like there is no other translation than this one by Ernest Vizetelly from over 100 years ago (correct me if I am wrong). Therefore, when another reviewer below writes "but there are several mistakes in translation" and "there is an entire section in which the translator removed a description of Zola's, because he thinks the English audience wouldn't be interested", then this is certainly correct, but as long as nobody translates this book again, we will have to live with this. And the reader should not forget that E. Vizetelly was Zola's "official" translator, his translations were the only ones authorized by Zola, they knew each other personally very well and helped each other during hard times, and some of the old-worldish British 19th century linguistic charme that Vizetelly used for this translation (and his other Rougon-Macquart translations) cannot be reproduced by any modern, 21st century translator. His Zola translations are classics, with all their faults!

12 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Great Book with Bad Translation/Print By Irene Music I am unsure if this book is available in English trans from someone other than Ed Vit. and Mondial book publishers, but there are several mistakes in translation that are more oversights and bad editing than any real translational problem between English/French. As well, there is an entire section in which the translator removed a description of Zola's, because he thinks the English audience wouldn't be interested. Incase he's reading this, I was interested. Zola is an excellent observer, that's part of the charm of his writing, his fabulous descriptions that allow the reader to nearly take part in an event for which they were not present, the descriptions are so detailed and interesting. To have instead an astrisk by Ed telling me at the bottom of the page that my sentiments couldn't take the brutal description...if there isn't a new translation, there needs to be one and a better edited version too! That said, of course, even shoddy trans and editing mistakes can't ruin Zola. I am half way through and just like all others this novel immediately presents great characters that make you curious for more and keep you hooked until the end!!

For any parent who wants to give their child a view of the world outside their strip-mall laden nieghborhood, they should dedicate themselves to reading this story to them. My youngest is only 7 years old and he loved this book! The only caveat I have is this book, like all Henty books, details many graphic battles. However, the main character demonstrates bravery, leadership, loyalty and ingenuity- traits we'd all love to see built into our kids. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

He starts off as a teen and then grows up through the time of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. The fictional protagonist interacts with historical characters from that period of Scottish History. The story is full of adventure, friendship, loyalty, honor, heroics, and history. Good values are presented. This book is great for anyone looking for something on Scottish history and which also is an outstanding novel. This book is as excellent or better then any Nigel Tranter book I have read, like The Wallace and The Bruce Trilogy. The accuracy of the historical period is superb and I have read much on this area of Scottish history. The persons discussed, the geography talked about, and the timeline presented is very accurate.I highly recommend this and can't wait to read another Henty.

A Strange, But Very Human Little Novel By mp Laurence Sterne's 1768 novel, "A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy," is a strange and largely plotless book - less the recounting of a journey than of Parson Yorick's ramblings. Following the wildly successfuly, and no less diffuse "Tristram Shandy," Sterne crafts a much smaller, but no less intense work, recounting the misadventures of Parson Yorick, himself a character in the earlier novel. Labelling himself a 'sentimental traveler,' Yorick's account of his travels is not descriptive, but emotive, revealing his conflicted, if warm-hearted psychology. The novel begins abruptly in the middle of a conversation between Yorick and his servant over a French policy in the eighteenth century of seizing the property of a foreigner who dies in France. Eager to discover the truth of the matter, Yorick impulsively throws a few shirts in a bag and before the next day ends, lands in Calais, France. Upon his arrival, his initial purpose, like many which he determines on in the course of the book, is forgotten, as his mind drifts from topic to topic as things and people happen to cross his sight. What remains of the novel are a series of pathetic and amorous adventures, in which Yorick's senses of morality, propriety, and common sense are brought into constant conflict with his impetuous nature and good humored guile.Sterne is too intelligent and expert a writer to allow sentiment, what we might call sappy nonsense, to rule the day in his novel, and the scrapes Yorick get himself into are as much a critique of pure sentiment as an exploration of the uses and practicality of human sympathy. Sterne is playing with a recent tradition of moral philosophy, including the likes of such authors as Shaftesbury and Adam Smith, the latter of whose "Theory of Moral Sentiments" (1759) was at the forefront of popularizing and pragmatizing fellow-feeling. Sterne uses the excitable and impulsive Yorick to play with these ideas, along with those of his acquaintance, David Hume, whose notions of moral aesthetics marked a radical departure from the aforementioned predecessors. Out of all of these high flown philosophical traditions, Sterne fashions a witty and clever series of scenarios - from eating with peasants, bantering with a monk, flirting with a married woman while her husband indifferently watches, and nearly getting thrown in the Bastille - all display a very human look at the world.Encounters between Yorick and various classes and characters in France illustrate the distance between theory and practice in terms of implementing any kind of systematic philosophy - even, and especially for a man of the cloth, like our protagonist. Yorick means well most of the time, which makes his faults and foibles all the more endearing and amusing. By his own admission, Yorick is constantly falling in love, perhaps to give his bachelor life some sense of chivalric purpose, but when he starts falling in love with every chamber-maid and noblewoman in France, we begin to question, not only his sincerity, but the capacity of his sexual and emotional appetites. It makes for hilarious episodes, especially when his French servant, La Fleur, is dragged into the middle of them.A forerunner of the focused genre of sentimental fiction like Mackenzie's "The Man of Feeling" and the more refined imaginative sensibilities of many Romantic Era authors, Sterne's little novel, along with "Tristram Shandy" made immediate cultural impact, not only in England, but throughout Europe. Sometimes confusing, often amusing, reading Sterne's "Sentimental Journey" is a great way to while away a summer afternoon.

The amorous adventures of a gentleman in 18th century France By A Customer This autobiographical acount by Sterne of his amorous progress through France and Northern Italy is surely one of the most delightful books ever written. Composed as he lay dying of tuberculosis, the book nonetheless encaptures the author's renowned zest for life as well as the libertine spirit of the age in which he lived. The journey down through France to Northern Italy is the perfect vehicle for an excursion into the nature of human sensibility, and from the moment that this cultured Anglo-Irish cleric sets foot in Calais, the reader is treated to a seies of exquisite encounters with the fairer sex. Rarely has an author transmitted so well his understanding of the psychological complexity of women, or the pleasure he takes in their company. Engaging, perceptive and witty, this is a book whiich cannot fail to leave an imprint on the imagination.

Every once in a while I run across a writer who can really tell a tale and uses English as a painter uses oils.Ben

"LOTS OF LAUGHS AND A FEW WELL-EARNED TEARS A TIME-BOUND TALE WITH TIMELESS APPEAL Angela?s home life forces her to grow up too fast. A popular school leader and “closet nerd,” Angela responds by enshrining carefree fun as a virtue when it comes to the opposite sex. Bart Aikens, filmmaker, The Vampire’s Dance How does a good girl coming of age in 1950s Albany, New York, play the field when boys control the dating game? The boys who like Angela aren’t always the ones she pines for in her diary.  Angela is dismayed that boys look down on the girls they have pushed to go all the way.  She wants to avoid a fast reputation but yearns for no-strings-attached flirtations and slow dances with as many cute guys as she can juggle.  Angela confides in and treasures her emancipated, artistic mentor.  Sparks fly when her parents bar Angela from acting on her dating preferences.   The events of one summer night forever color Angela’s family relationships but cannot diminish her boy-crazy ways. The secret thrills in Angela’s Boy Crazy diary harken back to the days when Elvis was young and cell phones, computers, and the sexual revolution had yet to change American life. Reading Boy Crazy is like being a GoPro action camera in the life of a girl, getting to see through her eyes as she grows from child to young woman in a life filled with boys, men, happy times and tragedies, dances and historical events…this is life in the raw…Boy Crazy provides a refreshingly unique journey…Angela is aware and involved…I loved this book and the vicarious living it provided. Sherre Lovick, novelist, aerospace engineer, pilot, musician, dancer C’mon, let’s admit it. We’d look, if we could, at that diary of a lover, friend, or family member. We would. We want to know the secrets. We don’t look, of course, out of courtesy and politeness. But what if someone courageously offered us a look into her diary, into her life, her mind, her heart? I found the look Angela offered fascinating, entertaining, and moving. Now it’s your turn. Go ahead, take a look. You know you want to. Whether she is interacting with her family or just hanging out with friends, Angela’s humor captures your attention with her child’s view of situations. Her life is not always fun, though. She faces religious prejudice, bullies, and family members who often do not understand her. Her gutsy attitude carries her through these trials allowing her to emerge a stronger individual with a determination make a better life for herself.Ms. Weiss uses her own childhood diary entries to describe the challenges and successes of a young girl growing up in upstate New York in the 1950’s. Her character development is excellent. Not only does the author portray Angela’s élan vital, but she also gives glimpses into the difficulties faced by immigrant families during this time. Pictures from Ms. Weiss’ family photo albums give depth to the poignant story of Angela as she learns some hard life lessons. This book leaves you waiting for the sequel to find out what happens to Angela after she becomes an adult. I didn’t want the book to end.

The many old photos of real people and Angela's childhood paintings make the novelized diary seem very realistic. I enjoyed meeting her special friends and family members, as well as various members of the opposite sex. Reading about Angela's girlhood feelings and experiences growing up in a family of limited means. I often laughed at fun times and sometimes shed tears when serious themes emerged. While light-hearted, the book has substance and deals with social issues which emerged in later decades. Those growing up in recent decades can experience what girlhood used to be like. This historical novel provides a nostalgic view for those coming of age when life was simpler and different. I highly recommend this slice of 1950s life in upstate NY!

It appears she had many boy crushes and admirers as well. I did not think that I would get so interested in Angela’s day to day activities. But as I read the book, I would read some lines to my husband. He too was amused. Being that we both grew up in the late 50s we could relate to Angela. I hope there’s a sequel!!" I need to know what happened to Aunt Sara and the men Angela met as a grownup. cv

I've gotten the ones on the attached DVD and the ones from the website. Neither one has a configured and working IPA server nor are the supposed "included users" setup on the virtual machines as they say they are in the text. That was honestly the big draw to this book over the book I already had was the ability to practice just as I did in the rapid track class on virtual machines practicing the skills required not having to have the time to first learn how to setup IPA. Granted it's a skill I plan to master soon enough but I didn't want to have to learn it just to learn how to attach to an existing LDAP server... So far the book needs some serious editing and a second edition. Plenty of good information in there it's just not laid out very well and as mentioned before lots of grammatical errors, most of which can be forgiven if you have ever seen the author's videos and realize that english is likely a 2nd or 3rd language.

The Worst Book for Red Hat Enterprise 7 By Stephen Jones I am an IT Manager for a Unix/Linux infrastructure, and I have also been a Red Hat Enterprise Engineer for a number of years. I am Red Hat certified in RHEL 7 (and previous versions), but I purchase Red Hat books for reference and for the people who work for me and with me. In my honest opinion, I have to say that this is the worst book I have come across and I highly recommend not purchasing this book if you are new to Red Hat and wish to get certified.First, I have to give credit where credit is due. This author does a great job at teaching Red Hat practice and theory. We need more of this and don’t often see it modern RHEL books. Most of the literature out there teaches syntax and practical application. This author instead spends more time teaching how and why something works the way it does instead of giving you syntax and every switch out of a man page. This is fantastic and this author is both well-educated and a remarkable teacher. I would turn to this author for answers to technical questions and hold his advice in high regard no questions asked. If you put that all aside and look at the book as a student, this should be scrapped and worked from the ground-up in my professional opinion. This book is filled with numerous errors. I understand we are all human (authors included), but the number of spelling, grammatical, and structural errors are far too many to have passed a technical review. As far as Pearson Certification books go, I am very disappointed. I put a lot of trust into Pearson IT Certification books and have used them for the CCNA and CCNP coursework. However, they have let a book not ready for publishing go to print and it does not appear they had enough eyes, reviewers, or technical QA departments look it over. This is not something I expect from them being industry experts. The author spends a lot of time telling the reader about commands, but doesn’t always tell the reader when to enter a command and when not to. He uses full commands in the middle of sentences and it is often unclear as to whether you should try them or not. So, many of the commands fail because he is merely talking about them when he really isn’t expecting you to enter them.Next, there are too many spelling errors. For example, there is an entry in the section about user authentication where he tells you to install the ‘sshd’ package when he really means the ‘sssd’ package. While a professional may understand what he “means” and be able to adjust accordingly, a beginner might not. This will most certainly lead to frustration. The virtual machines that are available for download do not work as he states they do. There is a virtual machine that should have IPA installed and ready to go, and two machines that act as servers (in their own right) but clients to the IPA server. After downloading the IPA virtual machine, I noticed that some of it is installed and configured and some of it is not. A beginner will not know what to go look for and add to it to make it a working server. As a trained engineer, I even struggled to find out what he installed and what was missed. It actually took several hours to make the IPA server a working server. Finally – the entire education on LDAP, IPA, and user authentication is broken in this book. IPA and identity management is a big concept for the RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer) certification. He has an appendix that teaches the user how to download, install, and configure an IPA server. This is great because people need to know how to do this. However, the appendix instructions need several adjustments in order to get it to work. He is missing a package in the instructions that is needed for DNS to work and some of the steps are out-of-order.Chapter 6 (RHCSA section) instructs the user to connect to that IPA server and there are several problems. First, after it is all said and done, the connection to the IPA Server using NSLCD doesn’t work. Second, there are two users that need to be set up on the IPA server before you start chapter 6, but then after you set them up, chapter 6 asks you to connect to that server and change to a user that doesn’t even exist. He also asks you to create a user that was already set up in the appendix, so essentially you are trying to create a user that already exists. There are even screenshots in the section that aren’t even the screen you are supposed to be looking at.Chapter 25 (RHCE section) attempts to connect to that same server using SSSD, and several things break in the process. It takes a trained expert to be able to identify those problems and fix them while reading his instructions. When you put all these chapters together, the entire subject of external authentication (LDAP, Kerberos, SSSD, NSLCD, DNS) does not work. There are several chapters that each has a piece that relies on another piece, and they are all missing something. If you are a beginner and wish to learn about external authentication, you need to know that the entire book is broken. From cover to cover, the entire subject of authentication is broken. You will spend more time with heartache then you will learning the practical steps needed to become an expert in external authentication. As somebody who is Red Hat certified, I have spent two weeks with the various chapters dealing with LDAP, IPA, and authentication in general. Overall, I have not been able to get anything working correctly the way the author states to do it. IPA is sensitive anyway. It has several moving parts and when one of them doesn’t work, the whole concept suffers. This only adds to the fact the Red Hat Enterprise 7 is quirky anyway and has more downsides than it does positives (but that is personal opinion). When you add a book full of mistakes to a touchy operating system and an identity management system that seems to fail more than it works, it makes for a difficult time for a studentI hate to say this, but after reading two books about Red Hat 7 and finding them both unteachable, the only literature I would put faith into is that directly from the Red Hat Corporation. Unfortunately, most people cannot afford $3,000+ dollars on the coursework to get firehose training for 4 days. I understand books from Amazon are the economical solution, but you must research what is out there before you make a decision. Unfortunately, this one is worse than the first book that came out. Please understand that these are the opinions of one person. I am an IT Manager. I am an Engineer. I am a Developer. I am a practitioner. And, I am always a student. However, after looking at it from all angles, I absolutely must recommend against this book. I don’t usually hesitate to assist authors with errata. We all write with errata. I write IT documentation for the Department of Defense and I expect people to find flaws with my writing too so that the peer-review process can achieve the highest-quality possible while still allowing for that human aspect of error.Aside from the complaints, this author has a lot of potential and could be one of the best if he just critiqued his own work and had IT professionals critique it. If there was a complete QA process from infancy to publishing, this could be the one person we have been waiting for to teach the world what they need to know about Red Hat. Being a published book from Pearson IT Certification, I would assume that it had to go through some checks and balances. But once you read it, you will see that it seems to lack a lot of that. In fact, I am speechless when looking at the errors, problems, and failures.Pushing the mistakes aside, I loved reading about this theory and approach. Unfortunately though, this one just didn’t make it.
