Narrated in first person, 84-year-old Grace Ann Dunbar, daughter of a Mississippi artist, recalls coming of age during the early Civil Rights Movement. Involvement in CORE, the Congress of Racial Equality, pushes her to commitment in the difficult and painful struggle white and black activists faced in the early to mid-1960s to gain Congressional passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

As a teenager, Grace Ann is affected by Brown v. the Board of Education, Emmett Till’s vicious murder, and learning about her own racial heritage.

When Dess, a cut above her role as a “mammy” in the Dunbar home, brings the tawdry role she’s had to endure to light, and when Poe, a black childhood playmate, is mutilated by members of the White Citizens Council, Grace Ann springs into action and doesn’t look back.

Author Deb Mohr crafts a unique look at the early Civil Rights Movement by casting light on the suffering of the black community at large as well as white individuals who contributed to this struggle, illuminating the fearful resistance to equality, still simmering in America today.

Grace and Poe By Tamsin Deb Mohr's descriptive writing capability sweeps the reader right into a period in American history that is filled with compelling characters and their inspiring stories. Grace and Poe are best childhood friends but racism, class division and circumstances challenge their bond throughout their lives. Ms. Mohr has obviously done her homework and weaves sad-but-true facts into her fiction. The theme of this book is all too current even though the story is set in the days when African Americans were still relegated to ride at the back of the bus.I strongly recommend Great Day in the Morning. The writing is strong, often beautiful and the story takes the reader on a journey with Grace and Poe from the innocence of childhood to an adult world filled with struggle, strength and love.

Clare Great Day in the Morning is narrated by Grace Dunbar in her golden years, but the heart of the story occurs in her youth, when her best friend Poe, the black son of one of the Dunbar servants, is falsely accused by Grace's bitter older brother. There are many passages in the story that will stay with me forever, but the relationship between Grace and Poe remains the most meaningful and poignant. The themes of race and identity are as pertinent today as they were in the early days of CORE. A well-written and thoughtful examination what it means to be human.

Mohr's writing is beautifully evocative of the times By Amazon Customer 84-year-old Grace Dunbar travels back in time to her youth, deeply ensconced in a racist community. As she grows and watches the people she loves devastated by hideous crimes and injustices, she struggles with her own identity and longing to do the right thing. Mohr's writing is beautifully evocative of the times, her characters are fully realized, and her take on the history is unflinching.
