Old English (or "Englisc") is the English language as recorded from around the year 700 to 1100. Spoken by King Alfred the Great and Lady Godiva, the Venerable Bede and Edward the Confessor, it is the language of such classics as "Beowulf", "The Dream of the Rood", and "The Seafarer". After 1100 the language went through a period of change so rapid that, by the time two centuries had passed, few could read these old texts. And yet "Englisc" really is English-much closer to the language of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Pope, and Dickens, and much easier for English speakers to learn, than such modern languages as French, Spanish, and German. For those interested in learning the oldest variety of English, this translation of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" may provide a pleasurable study aid: just set the modern text and this one side by side and compare the two. But be careful! In this book, Lewis Carroll's classic tale has been transported into the distant past, before the English had ever heard of tea, imagined a device as sophisticated as a watch, or even seen a rabbit (a later invasive species). Instead, they drank beer, mead, or (when they could get it) wine; an exceptionally learned scholar might have known how to tell time with an astrolabe; and the most familiar long-eared animal was the hare. These and many other differences between the England of Lewis Carroll and that of King Alfred are represented in this book's text and illustrations both. In addition, the magnificent poems of "Alice" ("How Doth the Little Crocodile", "You Are Old, Father William", and more) have been rendered into the meter and idiom of "Beowulf", thus becoming satires of Old English heroic poetry as well as of the moralistic verse that Carroll lampooned with such devastating effect.

About the Author Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer, mathematician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. Best known for his classics Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and Jabberwocky, Carroll was also an accomplished inventor who created an early version of what is today known as Scrabble. The publication of Alice s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 brought Carroll a certain level of fame, although he continued to supplement his income through his work as a mathematics tutor at Christ Church, Oxford College. Carroll s whimsical characters and nonsensical verse resonated with Victorian-era readers, and his books continue to be enjoyed by numerous modern societies dedicated to his promoting his works.Sir John Tenniel briefly attended the Royal Academy Schools, but for the most part he was a self taught artist. His illustrations appeared regularly in Punch, but it was the Alice books that confirmed his international reputation as an illustrator. Tenniel was knighted in 1893.

Infected continue to pour into the town and Noah is questioning whether or not they are becoming more lethargic.This is one incredible read with non stop action and a lot of chewing. Mrs. MacDonald did not have a farm in this one - she had a feast. The F-150 comes to the rescue and helps Noah and his passenger attempt to get to safety.The ending gives the reader a sense of satisfaction after all the group has been through.Most highly recommended.

Piperbrook shares with us the horrors Noah, his friends, and others he meets face in their struggle for survival. Not only do they have to fight the infected, but also many survivors who want to destroy humanity and start over. There are twists and turns that will keep you riveted to your seat, so be prepared for a rollercoaster ride with your favorite characters.

About the Author Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in 1807 in Portland, Maine, and he became a professor of modern languages at Harvard. His most famous narrative poems include The Song of Hiawatha, Paul Reveres Ride, "The Village Blacksmith," "The Wreck of the Hesperus." From his friend Nathaniel Hawthorne, Longfellow got a brief outline of a story from which he composed one of his most favorite poems, 'Evangeline'. The original story had Evangeline wandering about New England in search of her bridegroom. One of the first poets to take the landscape and stories of North America as his subjects, Longfellow became immensely popular all over the world, and he was the first American commemorated in the Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey. He was given honorary degrees at the great universities of Oxford and Cambridge, invited to Windsor by Queen Victoria, and called by request upon the Prince of Wales. He was also chosen a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and of the Spanish Academy. He died on March 24, 1882.

I'm excited to read more from this author. At first I thought it was sic-fi but it really isn't. If you like sci-fi, you'll still enjoy this read. I highly recommend it. Very well written and will keep you turning pages. The only disappointment I had was that it ended.

By J Johnson I just finished 'All Things Rise' and it is certainly one of the best love stories I have ever read. My heart is still pounding and my eyes are still tearing, but the love I feel is so thrillingly alive. By the way, this is a rather ingenious story from the future, too, with concepts and constructs that will have me pondering for many days to come. Most assuredly, this is one story that should definitely not be missed. Enthralling!Cole, Ruth Coleman George, resides on the planet Earth. Interestingly, Cole's life and family bear no resemblance to the remaining bogeymen that supposedly roam and pillage the few enduring habitable places on the ground according to the folks populating the cloud cities. Additionally, Cole is truly a treasure of a woman. She seems to have no pretenses and is astoundingly open and forthright. Hardworking and accomplished in many of the skills apparently needed to run a farm, she lives with her two aunts. Curiously, Cole is the central character in both instances when cloud people end up on the ground and someone has gotten seriously injured. During both occurrences the outstanding love story I referenced earlier has opportunities to flourish. I really do love Cole. Joyous epitomization!Audrey is a doctor doing primarily general practitioner work. What appears to happen is something akin to a magical connection when she first meets Cole. Add the intensity of how they respond to each other as they get more and more intimate, and almost everyone around them sense this couple is sublimely special. However, Audrey lives in a cloud city and Cole is totally melded to the places and people on the ground. There is no connection or interaction between these two locales. Given that reality, Audrey simply cannot comfortably visualize herself relocating. The implications are simply staggering. Yet Cole is everything she has ever dreamed of as a complete partner. What a profoundly disconcerting dilemma. Painful ultimate obfuscation!There are fantastic interplays between various characters. Plus, life centered within the cloud cities and life on the ground has absolutely no communication, no interrelationship, and heaps of misinformation. That dynamic in and of itself is shocking, jaw-dropping, and stunningly not the main focus of the book but incredibly significant. So do enjoy the setting and the tension, but envelop yourself in the extraordinarily beautiful love story. As a lover of lesbian science fiction romance, pickings are often slim. But Vaun gave me everything I wanted and more. Believable characters, excellent world building, and a pacing that always kept me interested. I highly recommend this book.

Review What a terrific series! If you like political intrigue, if you like a Game of Thrones-like setting, and if you ever played Dungeons & Dragons as a kid (OK, or as an adult), and particularly if you've a smattering of elemental US History (specifically the War for Independence and the Civil War) then you're gonna LOVE this series. As I greatly enjoy all of the above, this book was almost written for me, it seems, but I especially enjoyed the way Mr. Ried keeps so many "balls in the air" at a time. This one has a LOT of moving pieces, folks, you might want to take notes :) The characters are great fun and the plot has more twists and turns than a roller coaster. All in all, a great read. About the Author John Paul Ried grew up in Upper Montclair New Jersey and has recently relocated to Phoenix Arizona. He has taught both college level history and English classes at Essex County College and Illinois Central College. Tobin Reckless Ambitions is the first novel in what will be a series of fantasy novels set in Palamar, the realm created in the fertile imagination of the author. Those who have played Dungeons and Dragons or similar fantasy games will find a lot to like here. The story opens with the Palamar Emperor John Cardillion IV dying of a series of strokes and without naming a successor. In this realm, primogeniture does not prevail, the Emperor is expected to name his successor and that doesn't happen. He has four sons, all of which want to stake their claim to the Ruby Throne. Enter Earl Thomas Medford, current Lord Chancellor. He wants to avoid a destructive civil war and act as Kingmaker. He is calling an Imperial Duma to settle who will have the throne. And, he wants his beautiful daughter married off to the man who does become Emperor.Well, as one would expect things don't go quite the way good Earl Medford envisions. There are attempted coups and assassinations, honorable people and treacherous ones, just as one would expect in a fantasy game campaign. One item I truly enjoyed is that there is a Gamemasters University, where the mages and wizards seek out new games, new challenges to hone their craft within the multiverse. This is all very satisfactory, the story stays within its bounds and does not break through the dreaded 'fourth wall.'The characters are well crafted and believable. I found myself caring about the fate of several of them. I could give a firm description of where the story goes, but that would be a spoiler and that I do not wish to do. I WILL say there are a couple of twists that even I, a gamer and fan of fantasy for decades, was caught by surprise, so well done sir.The brothers won't compromise, Earl Medford ends up acting in ways that even he did not see coming from the beginning. His beautiful daughter ends up having an affair with an army officer, not one of the royal brothers. A twisted web we weave.So is there a civil war? Does one of John IV's reckless children end up on the Ruby Throne? What about outside forces? Just go read RECKLESS AMBITIONS and find out for yourself! You will enjoy the ride!

Reckless Ambition is an exciting new book series by a talented new author and great gentlemen John Paul Ried. At last Tucson Comic Con I had the honor of getting to interview and spend some time with John and Kathrine a great photographer. In our Interview we talked about how much Dungeons and Dragons has impacted Johns life and how this first book is a labor of love based around a game world he has made and evolved over many many years! As I said if you like Dungeons and Dragons, you’ll really enjoy Reckless Ambitions’ setting with psionics, magic, wizards, clerics, soldiers, and so many thieves! The setting is rich with romance, action and a nice little Civil War brought forth by the fertile and devious imagination of the John. The characters are well crafted and very believable, I instinctively found myself caring about them and how several of ended up at the end of this tale (and where they will be in Capricious Deities, book 2). I would love to give a firm description of where the story goes, but that would be spoiling the journey and that I never wish to do in a review. Just know you will not be disappointed and I will let you know there are a couple of twists that even I, a gamer and well-read consumer of fantasy, was pleasantly surprised. What may separate Bosman's achievement here is his attention to character development, which does not lag in giving appropriate consideration to its various character in regards to both satisfying the curiosity and interest of readers and integrating the story into the most cohesive of folds. The story strands are several, and they intermingle nicely, so that indeed they dovetail in the end remarkably well, with no whiff of pat or facile closure. Protagonist Detective Sergeant Billings is very likable and readers shall relate to him on several levels, despite the difference in time period or location or some characteristic or other which may happen lie outside the ordinary.

The mystery is intriguing and his Quaker past does factor in when his foster family asks for his assistance, and the two cases may not be as separate as once thought. I look forward to seeing what future trouble DS Billings gets himself into.

Grace and Poe By Tamsin Deb Mohr's descriptive writing capability sweeps the reader right into a period in American history that is filled with compelling characters and their inspiring stories. Grace and Poe are best childhood friends but racism, class division and circumstances challenge their bond throughout their lives. Ms. Mohr has obviously done her homework and weaves sad-but-true facts into her fiction. The theme of this book is all too current even though the story is set in the days when African Americans were still relegated to ride at the back of the bus.I strongly recommend Great Day in the Morning. The writing is strong, often beautiful and the story takes the reader on a journey with Grace and Poe from the innocence of childhood to an adult world filled with struggle, strength and love.

Clare Great Day in the Morning is narrated by Grace Dunbar in her golden years, but the heart of the story occurs in her youth, when her best friend Poe, the black son of one of the Dunbar servants, is falsely accused by Grace's bitter older brother. There are many passages in the story that will stay with me forever, but the relationship between Grace and Poe remains the most meaningful and poignant. The themes of race and identity are as pertinent today as they were in the early days of CORE. A well-written and thoughtful examination what it means to be human.

Mohr's writing is beautifully evocative of the times, her characters are fully realized, and her take on the history is unflinching.

About the Author Henry van Dyke was an American religious writer, lecturer, and clergyman. Educated at the Theological Seminary at Princeton University, van Dyke returned to the school after his graduation as a Professor of English Literature and became an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1913 he was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson, his former classmate, as the ambassador to the Netherlands and Luxembourg, a job that he maintained throughout the First World War. His most famous short stories include "The Story of the Other Wise Man" and "The First Christmas Tree," which, like many of his other works, centered around moral and religious themes. After a lifetime of public service and religious leadership, Henry van Dyke died in 1933 at the age of 80.

LIKE BEING RIGHT IN THE HOLY LAND By FRANK The book "Pastures of Wonder" makes one feel like if he or she were right there going to Jerusalem and then later in the book to travel down the road to Jericho with the excitement of maybe even encountering robbers on the way as the man in the story of the Good Samaritan.did. I read the book and was swept away by the descriptive prowess of Van Dyke; clearly written when words spoke for pictures. I have since returned to the book for doses of inspiration and relaxation. Then I noticed I'd creased one of the pages! I was delighted to find the book on Kindle and immediately downloaded it. Now inspiration rests in my phone or tablet or laptop!Van Dyke does an excellent job of bringing the reader back to the Holy Land. A more contemporary author did a similar thing decades later; the original is far better! You don't have to be religious to enjoy the book.

By Stephen Fisher D.L Maynard has a great skill at picking up on nuances of the Gospel accounts and "filling in the story" with possible details of daily life in those around Jesus, without distorting the essence of the scriptural text. The glimpses of daily life and personal struggles of the Gospel characters enhance the understanding of the texts. Her use of Hebrew traditions makes the read all the more interesting. I find the stories reverent, with an awe for the Holy reflected regularly; but don't expect saccharine sweetness! A delightful read!

By Cmate Once again Ms. Maynard captured my interest, however I found it hard to believe that I was actually reading a novel that was written from Christ's point of view. I knew I had to read it again! Ok, so I'm a slow learner! This is an emotional journey that every Christian will find captivating, and you will WANT to read it again (as I did) just to experience the full impact of Christ's words...and His world. He was brought to life for me through Ms. Maynard's honest, insightful, yet imaginative writing. Although it is a work of fiction, I believed I was there with the Son of Man, walking the roads of Galilee some 2000 years ago! Add this book to your reading list...you won't regret it.

The Deluxe 2016 edition has all of the features you are used to seeing in past versions of Writer's Market and you get access to the Writer's Digest / Writer's Market website at writersmarket.com where freelance jobs are posted regularly. Other than your usual daily dose of sales spam from the website, that;s a great feature.The first section of the book give you tips on finding and managing work, examples of query letters - what to do and what not to do. After that there are the usual sections on how to get a literary agent, book publishers that are looking for submissions and then the consumer magazines, trade journals, and contests and awards that are open to freelancers.I skipped a few years of buying this book, opting to work through sites such as Elance (now known as Upwork), Freelancewriting.com and word of mouth through other clients. If you are making a living from your writing, the annual release of this book is invaluable. Make no mistake: Freelancing in any field, especially for writers can be hard work and highly competitive. It's easy to get discouraged when the results don't pay off right away.The cover price is a bit high for the deluxe edition, nearly $50 - however, you can deduct the cost of this book on your taxes. You are going to want to use it as much as possible to justify the cost. Get out your highlighter pens, your tape flags and fire up your computer program of choice to keep track of your submissions. I got my copy of this year's WM just before Christmas and already it looks like one of my college textbooks at the end of the semester! If you're dreaming of being a freelance writer and your new year's resolution is to get your name in print, this is a great tool to help you do it! Go for it and break a pencil!

Worthwhile buy for inexperienced writers serious about publishing By Stephanie Ann Definitely a worthwhile purchase for me as a writer who has my first complete manuscript at the ready and a LOT of homework to do on attempting to have it published. The index of publishers by genre is extremely helpful, as is much of the other information and advice throughout the book . It covers many aspects of the publishing process, even a little on how to negotiate contracts, which I hadn't even thought about. The reason I'm giving it four starts instead of five is that while it's a two-inch thick book, only a relatively small percentage of that can help any one individual because they cover so many kinds of writing. For example, I was eager to read sample query letters, but it turned out there was only one for fiction books, which means the others weren't entirely relevant. They were for non-fiction books, magazines, etc, and even counting those there's only a small handful of (apparently ficticious) letters to look at. When reading other sections of the book I had pretty much the same problem, skipping over chunks of text that were more for wannabe freelance journalists or poets or short story writers than novelists. But the index and descriptions of each publisher (or magazine or journal, if that's what you need), which include pretty detailed submission guidelines and contact info, is awesome. It's nice to have all that information in one place as a jump off point. Saves a lot of Googling time.

Writer's Market Is Worth Every Penny By Steve Nesbit Writer's Market is a must have for writers whether they are new to the craft or seasoned veterans. I told myself years ago that I do not need a new copy every year, but when the book comes out, I buy one. There is so much more than just listings inside. I think of it as a textbook and write, scribble, and jot notes in the margins.

Osborne Gloria's book pinpoints not only the obvious hazards facing stepfamilies (children and finances), but digs deep to expose and address the hidden anxieties and pain that so often undermine them.Because stepfamilies are at high risk of re-divorce - about 75 percent fail - she offers valuable insights into why some break up and others survive. With warmth, humor and compassion, she offers tips on healthy remarriage, realistic expectations and win-win problem solving. I wish Gloria's book had been available when I became stepmom to four children who were unexpectedly dropped into my honeymoon home years ago. Maybe it wouldn't have saved my marriage, but it would have saved me and the children considerable grief. This is a must-read for anyone considering, or in, a stepfamily. I can't think of a better gift book than this for any stepfamily, even one with no apparent problems.

When I met my husband in 1990, I didn't think much about the difficulties of raising someone else's children. I thought that since I was a parent myself, we would get along so well. That's not what happened. Reality set in pretty fast."What I wasn't prepared for, was all the complexities of having other people involved in our families, all the decision making that needed to be done by more people than just my husband and I. Twenty years ago, stepfamily information wasn't as readily available as it is today. Understanding and important tools By Marsha Gruen I married the man of my dreams; a second marriage for each of us, we both have children from our first. From day one our new household has been a disaster. The children don't get along and play my husband and I against each other. After reading Gloria Lintermans' book, I realized that my expectation was that we would instantly become a "normal" family instead of a "normal" stepfamily. Until now, I didn't realize that our children have about 60 differences to cope with in our new family. Learning this from Gloria's book has helped me to help our children. I have also learned that it was important for our children to have been encouraged to grieve the breakup of their biological families. My husband and I now encourage our children to talk about their feelings about this which has been enormously healing.Thank you Gloria for the understanding important tools you provide in this important book and for your helpful books I have needed in the past. Your work you share with your readers is so necessary.
