By wtstephens This is the perfect read for when you are at the beach or want to indulge in a story on the porch. The author makes every paragraph matter, as it is told in a narration style advance the narrative between Sarah and John. It is told in a way that makes me feel as if I am listening to a masterful auteur. If The Moth had been a thing in the 1800s, this chapter in Sarah's life would have fit right in.While only mentioned once in Sarah So Strong, the "war chest" discussed at length in her previous book only makes one appearance here. I appreciate this because it leaves me, the reader, wondering about the feelings of the characters. A "war chest," simply put, is a file that is locked deep inside oneself containing all of the emotional turmoil of the war. Sarah's path was interesting to me. Avoiding any potential spoilers, I felt that her chain of decisions weren't decided for what benefited her best. They were decided for what benefited her child the best. Her battle is one of emotional complexity. She is anything but naive; when it appears that she is by today's standards, the reader needs only to think back to her "war chest." The title is very fitting. Sarah is pretty damned strong.I look forward to reading more of her story. This is only a piece of who she is.

Fact and fiction skillfully woven together in a tale of greed, betrayal and revenge. On July 29th, 1715, the ill-fated Spanish treasure fleet of King Philip V left Cuba and sailed into history. While navigating the Florida Straits, the armada was struck by a violent hurricane. All eleven galleons were destroyed. Millions in gold, silver and jewelry were scattered on the reefs and sands off the Florida coast. More than 700 people perished in one of the worst sea disaster of all time. Over the years treasure salvagers swapped tales of sunken fortunes. Veiled in myth, one story dealt with a life-sized gold statue of a Madonna and Christ Child. Ex FBI agent Frank Fernandez is called upon to investigate the merciless murder of two treasure hunters who were searching for the Golden Madonna

This murder mystery combines intrigue with historical facts surrounding sunken treasure in a way that piques ones curiosity to continue turning the page. Mr. Mahr's use of description and detail brings the characters to life in such a way that the reader becomes immersed in the story. I particularly enjoyed his various references to Fort Pierce, Florida, the setting of the story. It is no surprise that he is an award-winning author. I highly recommend this novel about sunken treasure off Florida's coast.

The words flow easily and you can almost see the twinkle in the authors eye when she wrote some of the sentences.A must read for anyone that enjoy steampunk, smart humour and some steamy romance. Both the characters and the storyline are interesting and have depth.I can't wait for the next book. For just under 3 dollars it's a bargain, treat yourself and buy this gem of a story.

By Soluna This book not only brings together two awesomely different individuals, but it brings action, adventure, and of course realistic romance together in such a magical way. The two gents cannot be any more different, in class, and in over all personality that it's no wonder you fall in love with both Ashland and Simon. The author also dabbles into the relationships they have had and still have, that it leaves you wanting friends like Henri, Elliot and Marshall to have around for yourself. I love the twists of classes in the Victorian era and the great description of the legendary glass factory and it's special treasures. This book was hard to put down and I loved every second of it. It made me fall in love with love!!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. sweet refreshing read By Julia I loved this story. It takes the traditional Cinderella fairy tale and turns it on its head. Set in the Victorian era it features Ash (very clever, Ash, Cinder...) as a downtrodden glassmaker and Simon as the Prince Charming. It was very well written and sweet. It took me less than the hour waiting in the doctor's office to finish it, very short and snappy.I was very satisfied with how the story tied everything together. I would love to see a continuation featuring Henri. I loved him and Truffles.

Who is she working for or is she working only for herself? And who snuffs out lives without a care?Helen Meeker and her crew are now "dead". However, this can be a both a help and a hindrance in their quest to find answers to so many unsettled matters. War brings danger and intrigue. Will they be able to stop whoever is causing all of the turmoil. Will they find the mole in their who seems one step in front of them?Ace Collins takes these short novellas to a new height. He researches and loves history so that the details come out in his writings. All of this series sheds new light on the people and places which played such a role in World War II. How some people tended to not be loyal to a flag but too the power they could gain by playing one side against the other. This made for some very tense moments as well as some very lethal enemies. I am sure the next installment will be just as intriguing.I received a copy through bookfun. org in exchange for my honest opinion.

The never ending action keeps me coming back for more! Once again Ace’s writing is brilliant and engaging and keeps you turning the page! The story is riddled with on-the-edge-of-your-seat suspense and great twists and turns. Such intrigue and espionage – who is on whose side? The world is told Helen and her team are dead. Each character is trying to find out the secrets and loyalty of others. What side is Grace on? Who is she taking orders from? Can Helen unravel the secrets behind the Fister brothers and what they have been hiding this whole time? Who is pulling the strings of Alistar? What drives Bauer to be what he is? Mystic Visions (Mystic Dreamers), by Rosanne Bittner

From Publishers Weekly Picking up where she left readers in Mystic Dreamers, the initial volume in this series, Bittner explores the efforts of holy woman Buffalo Dreamer and her warrior husband, Rising Eagle, to fend off encroaching white settlers in the Lakota tribe's Black Hills. The narrative begins in 1836 and spans more than a decade. The heart of the book is the evolving relationship between the Lakota couple as well as the fate of their children, two of whom succumb in a smallpox epidemic introduced by the settlers. Rising Eagle survives smallpox, vowing to avenge his children's deaths. Also central to the story is an Oglala woman who now lives among whites, named Florence. She once loved Rising Eagle, but married an abusive white man, became an alcoholic and gave her son, Little Wolf, to Rising Eagle to raise as his own. When Lakota warriors attack white settlers traveling across buffalo country, Rising Eagle rapes a white woman, Mary Higgins, brings her back as a slave and also captures the woman's 10-year-old blond daughter, whom he renames Yellow Bonnet. Eventually traded back to the white settlers, Mary leaves Yellow Bonnet behind, as well as a newborn son she bears to Rising Eagle, whom Florence, now married to a kind preacher, raises. Bittner's descriptions of Lakota life are impeccably researched, with impressive scenes of visions and ceremonies. But her Lakota characters are all highly idealized, to the point where Bittner justifies Rising Eagle's brutal rape and kidnapping as a culturally viable tactic of war, further portraying the rape victim as weak, hypocritical and self-absorbed. Most of the settlers are treated as one-dimensional perpetrators, while the Lakota are given full range of emotion and spiritual depth. The result is an unbalanced tale stumbling when describing interaction between white and Lakota characters, but bringing a variety of intriguing Native American characters to life. (May)

Excellent Native-American Romance By A Customer In 1836 on the Great Plains, Lakota warrior Rising Eagle learns from the shaman that he is to marry Buffalo Dreamer, a person belonging to another clan who foresees the future. After winning her hand by accomplishing the deeds set forth by her father and earning her love, Rising Eagle and Buffalo Dreamer marry.Over the subsequent years, the duo's love for one another and their growing family turn into the only thing that keeps them from deep depression. Wherever they and their tribe lives the Whites follow in masses, polluting the land and water, and bringing the deadly small pox with them. Buffalo Dreamer continues to envision the bleak future even as she predicts the one shining moment in their future, a triumphant last stand victory.Like its predecessor MYSTIC DREAMS, MYSTIC VISION brings alive a bygone era so vividly the audience believes they are observing events first hand. The entire cast provides readers with a feel of the period, especially the gloom felt by Indians as their way of life seemed destined to be trampled under an endless stream of Whites. The story line is crisp and entertaining. However, the characters with their motives, interrelationships, and the emotional stress countered by happiness make this another triumph for Rosanne Bittner and fans of historical romance.Harriet Klausner

Still the same characters as the first book, "Mystic Dreamers". If you have not read the first book, do not worry, you will still understand the entire book. We see what happens to Fall Leaf Woman and her son, Spirit Walker. We witness casualties of war and some new faces. This book holds back no punches and is extremely realistic! It will make you laugh out loud, smile in joy, and scream in anger! You will feel the loss of friends from the first book and revel in the revenge of the Lakota in way that only the Lakota could do!*** This book continues where "Mystic Dreamers" (now in paperback) left off! Just as amazing as the last, this book follows history with great accuracy. A powerful and dramatic story that will leave its readers breathless! I was captivated from the very first paragraph! I felt like crying when it ended because I was begging for more! My only consolation was knowing that "Mystic Warriors" would come out. Here is a series that thousands will collect in hardback versions for their "keeper shelf". I will be one of them! ***

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Awesome and Horrible! By MLouise I just finished reading this one, which is the second book in the trilogy.I like the fact that even though lots of details are given, it doesn't drag on and on over the unimportant stuff.I understand the reviewer who gave this book only one star, as the story is a little more graphic than what I am used to for this type of book. Although the savage acts in the book were hard to swallow, I realize that the story is simply meant to be a portrayal. I don't necessarily think we are meant to 'cheer' for Rising Eagle as he rapes a captive. I think the author is simply trying to tell an accurate story. I have to admit, that during that part of the book I was tempted to put it down, but I wanted to see how the captive fared afterwards. The book really is good again after that part, so I'm glad I finished it.That being said, I DON'T think I will read the third book, for two reasons. First of all, this second book hinted at much, much more violence to come. I know its meant to be a 'history' story, but it's not something I want to dwell on any longer. Secondly, the main characters have so many 'visions' (that always come true), that I can pretty much tell you what happens, what main character gets killed, and how. At best, I'll just go to a book store and read the last chapter, so I can hopefully see how Rising Eagle's children fared. All in all, I fell in love with most of the characters, and I read the book in one day cause I couldn't put it down, so I feel obligated to give it five stars!

Ocean's Cage (Turbulence and Triumph Book 5), by Demelza Carlton

About the Author Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish. She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray-drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below. Sensationalist spin? No - Demelza tends to take a camera with her so she can capture and share the moment later; shipwrecks, sharks and all. Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world. The Ocean's Gift series was her first foray into fiction, followed by the Nightmares trilogy. Wordsmith By Ngaruawahia Girl Poor Maria’s ailment is getting the better of her and it seems she is best to stay away from the ocean which calls her constantly. Within the gossip of the sea creatures comes word of a latent danger which even Maria can’t thwart. Feeling abandoned and suffering from that ever present female complaint of not feeling good enough, Maria begins to find that marriage to William is a caged Heaven. I love this series. I feel the urge to grab everything Demelza Carlton publishes and read until it’s finished. She’s amazingly talented and has the power to push me into the depths or lift me high with her skill as a wordsmith.

There was a bit more of an actual plot going on in this one, though not enough to convince me to continue reading this series. The books are very short and don't forward the plot all that much. I think I would have enjoyed them more had several of the books been combined together, making them a more normal length book and a complete story. This one ends on a cliffhanger, but I really don't care enough at this point to buy the last book in the series.

Agile transformation and project management are life skills. Consulting with the smartest minds on the planet running fortune 500 companies, translating to centuries of wisdom, it is well understood that without transformation happening in the organizations on a regular basis and with scientifically managed tools, the companies would not have reached the zenith of success. All the information that is rolling the ball of success for them is instilled in the book in a fashion so that it can be used by the common person. We have covered the key concepts of how one can be transformational while being agile so that one can adapt to any changes in the environment along the way. If you are looking for perfection in the author and participants, then this book is not for you. If you want to learn from the mistakes and lessons learnt from some of the best in industry, then you are at the right place. In this book we will bring to you the tools to fill up the difference between words and action. This book will give you the secrets of how you can effectively implement change in your personal life, project, or organization – from wherever you are to wherever you want to be. It is where science and arts meet. It takes determination, planning and effective execution to make agile transformation effective. We will show you all the myths that make you think that you cannot change or accomplish a goal give you a road map and tools to execute a change that you desire. Your age, sex, race, geography etc makes no difference. These are universal principles just like gravity….You can fight gravity or make it work for you – choice is yours. Transformation / Change is not optional. Even if you have been successful in the past, you have to be open to change. Even large Fortune 100 companies can suffer if they are not amenable to change. Large corporations have professionals that focus on changing the organization. They get direction from leadership as to where they need to go from where they are. Then they design a road map of what it is going to take to make that journey. Along the way they measure the change to see if they are on track to make it happen. This book will give you the foundation of assessing where you are in life, what is most important to you right now that makes your life most meaningful and fulfilling. It will provide you the steps to make those goals into components that you can work on. We have not used technical jargon - instead it is in simple English so that anybody can put this to work without sophisticated tools and technology. Transformational goals are just dreams and wishful thinking till they have been prioritized and projectized and followed thru by massive action. We do not guarantee results because it will depend on how much committed action one is willing to take. What we do know is that to sleep peacefully at night and live life fullest to the graveyard, one needs to be in this mode to make the most meaningful difference on the planet in this project called life. That is our primary goal. To give you the methods and tools so that you can live life at peak performance every single day. Financial net worth is only one of the metrics in the scorecard of life. There are many more – how many lives would be changed during and even after one leaves the planet. It is upto you to define what your metrics are, what you want your obituary to read. This will give you the thought process, the art, the science and the mechanics – everything that you need. After this, you will lose the right to complain about your past, your reasons for being successful or fulfilled in life. It is like reformatting a tablet to factory settings. All the malware that had kicked in because of external circumstances in your life will be eliminated and you will have clear vision of why you are here on this planet and what you want to be known for when taken to the graveyard. Get excited because the time has come to be the best you can be.

Whisper & Fury (Eydulan) (Volume 1), by Mark Brandon Powell

From the Author This first book to the Eydulan Series is something that I have really enjoyed writing. The villain, the artificial intelligence, just about every character has been a blast. I wanted this to have more slapstick or sarcastic style humor it than my previous books. Then there is always my want to push magic and technology together. If you have any questions about the book or for me, just email me and I will be happy to talk to you.

About the Author Welcome to my author page, and thank you for coming! My whole life I had a large imagination. When I played, with my Legos or running around outside with my friends, it wasn't just playing. I was in a different place, I was making worlds. I would dream up stories and settings, where I would normally be the lead, or at least be looking through their eyes. Playing video games was a normalcy for the escape into some uncharted and untold world where adventure awaited, which fueled my own creations.Insomnia had been a problem for me most of my life. This was another area that I was able to fill the space with waking dreams, praying that I would be able to get to sleep. It wasn't till I met my wife in July 2011 that I really started to contemplate what I wanted to do with my life. She was able to show me how happy I could be, just by coming into my life. So I figured that I could, and should, do that for my professional life.I started to read more books. I had been a visual entertainment consumer for much of my life, even though most of my gaming consisted of role playing games, of a heavily text base nature. Not having the visual feedback was a different feel. I liked it.It wasn't until after reading a few self-help books that I started contemplating what made me happy and how I might be able to turn that into a career. In August of 2012 I had a long conversation with my wife, who was supportive of the idea, and I started to write.Want to see more, come to my website for more at markbrandonpowell.comWant to get emailed instead, sign up now and I will email updates to you!Just copy and past in to a browser:MarkBrandonPowell.com/mailinglist

I would love to see more about Whisper and Fury, not to MENTION Wrath. The introduction of MAGES in the mix was VERY interesting. I'd like to hear more about how they came to be, how they figure in the overall scheme of this universe and where they will go from here.About the only criticism I have for it is the use of present tense. in my mind, present tense is extremely hard to use without some tense confusion. There were some typos here and there, but nothing that detracted from the story.Overall, I look forward to the next installment. This series has some GREAT potential!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Very Long Review For a Rather Short Book By Pheel I am sorry to say that this book was practically unreadable. Structurally, thematically and grammatically, it is an absolute mess. Normally I would give examples of the issues I mention, but in this case they are so numerous my review would be nearly as long as his book, and I came close enough to that anyway. The author chooses to write in present tense, which can be a challenge. However, he is horribly inconsistent with his tenses, switching to past tense quite often, even within a sentence. Another thing is that he has a large problem with homonyms. This is a common problem in self-published works, but he has a bigger problem than most. Then he has an issue with singular versus plural agreement between nouns and verbs; it makes reading an awkward experience. Also he seems to ignore the rules of possessives at random. Spelling is one area where he seems to be about average, though it is still a medium-level challenge. Then there are the dropped or missing words in a sentence, which tend to make the reader stop and back up in order to try to understand what seemed to be the point being made. Finally, as part of the author's writing style, he uses sentence fragments with abandon. As an occasional writing tool, it can be effective in portraying immediacy and seriousness. The problem is that the author uses the concept in almost every paragraph, and quite often more than once in a paragraph. The upshot of all these issues, along with several more I have just forgotten to mention, it is a battle for the reader to move on with the story and still be able to make sense out of what it seems the author is trying to say.As to his writing style, for this book it seems to break into two parts. For about the first third of the book, He jumps between time periods quite often. Now, some of them are titled as such, and I can understand his reasons for using it an expository method for the backstory. However, there are many other scenes where there is just a section marker, followed by something completely different. Two characters might be talking about where or when they should travel, and then after the section marker, they are in the midst of a battle with unknown adversaries where there had been no lead-up to it at all. For some reason, this seems to be a favorite style choice for him in the first part. As the book goes on, though, things seem to even out, and the reader does not get metaphorical whiplash from quick, unexplained scene changes. For the story itself, because of all the challenges I have mentioned, it was difficult to get much from the story arc. Katryce whined about the cybernetics that were forced upon her to the point of annoyance. Yes, we get that she was not happy about being forced into having them. We don't need another soliloquy on it. Then there is Whisper, one of the AIs. We get that she does not like humans, but she only has two basic insults, and they get very old far before the book ends. The joke is funny a couple of times, but several horses gave their lives being beaten to death by the repetition. In reading about the author, he seems so sincere in wanting to be a writer. Because of my review and general displeasure with this story, I decided to at least read a sample of his book "The Zero Class". I noticed from reading some reviews of that book, that others had similar issues to a similar extent with that book's contents that I do with "Whisper and Fury". The sample I read was from a major edit that the author did in answer to those concerns. While I still found all the issues I have mentioned, I noticed that there was a sincere attempt at improvement. At least for the sample, I was also able to follow and enjoy the story line; it was quite a bit more interesting.I abhor giving out one-star reviews because a writer puts a lot of work into their product, and especially if the author is willing to try to learn and improve. Also, they are putting themselves out in the public arena with more guts than I have; I would love to write, but time and fear prevent me. Because of all that, and what I saw in his other book sample, I put "Whisper and Fury" at two stars, though with no interest in reading further in that series.Good Luck, Mr. Powell. I hope you continue to learn and improve. You have a lot of room to grow.

For Chicago police detective Tony Alfano, it was not like most mornings. Today it was five bombings throughout the Loop, two hundred pounds of missing dynamite, and one dead Hungarian in an alley off Washington Street. Is it the Outfit, the Mob, Bolsheviks, or the unions? In the dark speakeasies and nightclubs of Chicago’s underworld, Alfano treads the sharp edge of sanity and delusion, praying that it’s just mob vengeance and not typical Chicago politics. In Depression racked Chicago, three people crash into each other, each hoping for vengeance, redemption, and salvation. Alfano thought he’d seen it all in his twenty years on the force, but this is brutally and explosively different. Can he stop the killer or will the killer get to him first? . . . . and to add pressure, the city’s corrupt mayor demands that Alfano catch the killer before the gates to the Century of Progress World’s Fair and Chicago are opened to America and the world.

The story is fast paced taking place before a World's Fair in Chicago during the Depression. Detective Alfano, Gini, Mr. Smythe, and others are characters who fascinate the reader. Greg Randall has written another great novel.

I was born just a little too late to see first run Bogart films, but like to watch the reruns. Mr. Randall does a great job of capturing the "film noir" essence in this book.

Émile François Zola is one of the greatest writers of the 19th century, and one of France’s best known citizens. In his life, Zola was the most important exemplar of the literary school of naturalism and a major figure in the political liberalization of France. Around the end of his life, Zola was instrumental in helping secure the exoneration of the falsely accused and convicted army officer Alfred Dreyfus, a victim of anti-Semitism. The Dreyfus Affair was encapsulated in the renowned newspaper headline J'Accuse. More than half of Zola's novels were part of this set of 20, collectively known as Les Rougon-Macquart. Unlike Honore de Balzac, who compiled his works into La Comedie Humaine midway through, Zola mapped out a complete layout of his series. Set in France's Second Empire, the series traces the "environmental" influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution which became more prevalent during the second wave of the Industrial Revolution. The series examines two branches of a family: the respectable Rougons and the disreputable Macquarts for five generations. Zola explained, "I want to portray, at the outset of a century of liberty and truth, a family that cannot restrain itself in its rush to possess all the good things that progress is making available and is derailed by its own momentum, the fatal convulsions that accompany the birth of a new world."

Doctor Pascal, by Emile Zola

About the Author ?mile Zola was a French writer who is recognized as an exemplar of literary naturalism and for his contributions to the development of theatrical naturalism. Zola s best-known literary works include the twenty-volume Les Rougon-Macquart, an epic work that examined the influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution on French society through the experiences of two families, the Rougons and the Macquarts. Other remarkable works by Zola include Contes ? Ninon, Les Myst?res de Marseille, and Th?r?se Raquin.

In addition to his literary contributions, Zola played a key role in the Dreyfus Affair of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His newspaper article J Accuse accused the highest levels of the French military and government of obstruction of justice and anti-semitism, for which he was convicted of libel in 1898. After a brief period of exile in England, Zola returned to France where he died in 1902. ?mile Zola is buried in the Panth?on alongside other esteemed literary figures Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. To Sum Things Up By myshiak Doctor Pascal's story is told here. The novel is more about him and his niece than about his musing on the heredity theory. All his scientific talks show no more than just one side of his personality, because showing that a certain physiological or a psychological anomaly passes either directly or indirectly from ascendants to descendants is a purely scientific task. A novel can show no proofs, only examples of such passing. Thus, Angelique Rougon in "Le Reve/The Dream", Pauline Quenu in "La Joie de Vivre/Zest for Life" and, in particular Jeanne Grandjean in "Une Page d'Amour/A Love Episode" clearly inherited a neurotic illness from their great-grand-mother Adelaide Fouque. And three members of the generation below (sons of Maxime Rougon, Nana and Claude Lantier) died in their childhood of various diseases, which shows complete family degeneracy. A more direct passing would be Gervaise Macquart's ("l'Assommoir/the Drum Shop")addiction to alcohol, which she inherited from her father Antoine, who died of a spontaneous ignition in a drunken stupor. However, there is no explanation either in any of the novels or in the genealogical tree how such phlegmatic and mercenary-minded people as Lisa Quenu and her husband ("Le Ventre de Paris/The Underbelly of Paris") produced such a joyous, generous and selfless daughter Pauline ("La Joie de Vivre/Zest for Life") or how Francois and Marthe Mouret, Adelaide Fouque's grandchildren, who die after losing their sanity ("La Conquete de Plassans/The Conquest of Plassans") and who produced a feeble-minded daughter and a neurotic son, whose disease developed into mysticism ("La faute de Abbe Mouret/The Sin of Father Mouret"), could along with that produce such an vigorous and business-minded son Octave ("Pot-Bouille/Pot Luck" and "Au Bonheur des Dames/"the Ladies' Paradise"). What makes it particularly hard to explain the genetic influence is the fact that family members (especially in late Rougon-Macquart novels) interact with each other little if any. Thus, three Lantier brothers seem totally alien to each other and their parents, Angelique Rougon "Le Reve/The Dream" is brought up under no influence of her mother Sidonie, Helene Grandjean ("Une Page d'Amour/A Love Episode") never has any contact with her brother Francois and Jean Macquart ("La Terre/The Earth" and "La Debacle/The Downfall") with his sisters Lisa and Gervaise. Furthermore, if to look at environment vs. heredity, things turn out to be in favor of the former, because there are characters who undergo a personality change. Thus, Octave Mouret in "Au Bonheur des Dames/The Ladies' Paradise" is a lot different from Octave in "Pot-Boille/Pot Luck", Arstide Saccard in "L'Argent/The Money" from Arstide in "La Curee/The Kill". Therefore, the heredity theory in Zola's novels is portrayed to a much lesser degree than the history of the French society under Napoleon III.

While it serves the purpose of an epilogue, it is also an impressive novel in its own right, and stands alone as a great work of literature. Pascal Rougon is a semi-retired physician who devotes most of his time to the study of evolution. An important asset in his research is the cabinet of files he keeps on his own diverse and dysfunctional family, the Rougons and Macquarts. Through detailed descriptions of these family dossiers, Zola reviews the events of the previous nineteen novels. In doing so, he provides us with a "Where are they now?" synopsis of the characters, and thoroughly explains the theories of heredity that underlie the series.Evolutionary discourse only comprises a portion of the book, however, as most of the novel is devoted to the relationship between Pascal and his young niece Clotilde. In Pascal, Zola creates a very autobiographical character, and allows us glimpses into his private life. Zola fancied himself a scientist, and his novels his experiments. At the time Zola wrote this book he was falling in love with a young mistress of his own. Throughout the book, Pascal, approaching old age, looks back on his life and contemplates its purpose. Zola uses Pascal as a mouthpiece to ponder aloud philosophical issues, like the conflict between knowledge and faith. Can the two coexist, or must one vanquish the other in order for mankind to truly progress? He debates the definition of a life well-spent: Is it better to devote one's time on this earth to work, or to the enjoyment of simpler pleasures like love and family? While many men seek immortality through offspring, Pascal has spent his whole life striving for an intellectual legacy of scientific achievement. As he feels the end of his life drawing nearer, he, like Zola, wonders if he has made the right choice in life.I would not put this work in the same class as Zola's four or five masterpieces, but it's in the better half of the Rougon-Macquart saga. Those who have enjoyed some of Zola's better-known novels will find much to enjoy in this one as well.

After 30 years of scientific and genealogical research, a doctor in his late 50s decides his life is meaningless without children and accepts his 25-year old niece's offer to have his child. He dies of a heart attack, and his mother manages to destroy all his papers except his family tree diagram. This, the last in the 20-book Rougon-Macquart cycle was described by Zola himself as the summary and the conclusion of his work. Intellectually, it is highly adventurous in parts, even by today's standards, but it seems to fall flat at the end with its implication that the whole point of life is simply to breed and pass on your genes. You could say this book is the ultimate hymn to occupational therapy. However lofty a view human beings may have of themselves and their activities, they are really no different from any other form of life.

The vast majority of sailing yacht scenarios comprise a couple sailing the boat together, needing to carry out all maneuvers and activities themselves with no help from a back-up crew. Their boat handling, navigation, sail handling, anchoring, and mooring skills all have to be carried out both efficiently and effectively, preferably with a minimum of physical effort (to conserve energy).

But most sailing technique books assume a crew of three or four, all willing to lend a hand. This book is therefore a first, addressing the most common sailing scenarios that anyone cruising will have to deal with, and providing clever, original, highly effective (and most important, successfully tried and tested by the author) techniques and solutions for dealing with the huge variety of essential operations on a boat--from sail setting and reefing; to picking up mooring buoys in a variety of wind and tide situations; to anchoring, berthing, and leaving a pontoon shorthanded; to picking up a man overboard; to sailing in fog and heavy weather--and even going up the mast.

This book will be a godsend to anyone sailing solo or shorthanded--including couples with young children who need to be supervised by one parent whilst the other runs the boat.

Organized into techniques for different cruising scenarios, the book features step-by-step sequential photos showing exactly how to approach each situation and carry out the task at hand.

Great Sailing Techniques - not just single-handed By 80s Product This is a fact-filled, practical, and interesting source for single-handed or short-handed sailing techniques. In fact, there's just a boatload of well described sailing techniques, illustrated with clear photos, some with video links. This is not a one-day read - there is a lot of material in here. I loved it, and you will, too.

By Knut Ivar Hansen Unless you are a seasoned liveaboard or a regatta racer (and even then) you will learn important lessons in this book. Stress free is what we want, that is partly why we seek the ocean waves in the first place. The author has a thorough understanding of what the major "stress" issues is and how to make them go away.

Much of the tech talk which can sometimes be mind numbing is left out and what is emphasized and very carefully explained with words, drawings, and mini videos, addresses short handed techniques that people like me have been looking for for a long time. This book is not meant to be an encyclopedia. What it does it does very well. I will be making use of this information.
