This was a great story....it's nice to see as cart playing the hero even if they don't know they are one. Can't wait for the sequel. Interesting take on the alien and the symbiot hairdo. I never thought of the idea of two aliens fused together. They could give hairclub for men a run for their money! . It seems to me as though the weird bat creatures are mice with wings. I wonder if the symbiot on their heads decides they hate cats and And start kissing every time a cat walks by that could make for a really interesting scenario. I can see it now cats whizzing by jumping in the air and grabbing that squeak squeak rip tear and In the background you hear the sound of hissing. It could be the easier way to get rid of the cats when the jobs done is just for everyone to lay their head on the ground next to the cats. I can just see it now....... alien race killed because their symbiotic hairpieces jumped off their heads and chased down the cats, resulting in massive blood mayhem and extinction of the cat species as well.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Witches as predators By A.Berg Lyra Lane owns a small book shop with her two best friends, who are also her roommates. She is in her late 20s, a lesbian and has not yet found Ms.Right. She can also see peoples auras, and use this to help people find the right book as well as offering some "fortune telling" on the side. Unforutnately for her, this is attacting some unwanted attention from some very dangerous people. Witches. Of which she is one, or so they tell her....This story is set in the Madison Wolves universe, but focused on witches. This makes the tone of the book a lot darker than the Wolves, since witches in Roseus universe are not a nice bunch as a rule, though they are less evil here than in the previous book with a similar theme, "Familiar". I "enjoyed" Familiar as well, though it was very distubring. I find that Poor LIttle Witch Girl is a less dark and more enjoyable read since the main character has more agency (she is not a slave, and works hard to avoid becoming one). However, Lyra is a witch and can't help some of her actions. If you remember Familiar or how witches work in the Wolves Universe, you will immediatly look at Lyra and her very devouted best friends with a bit of a side eye....The book manages the themes of "blessed with suck" and the concepts of interpersonal power and free will much more deftly than Familiar, and I am especially happy that Roseau presents a spectrum of witches and how they cope with their power. Being a witch is really all about power, you need it to defend yourself against other witches, and if you don't get it you will be enslaved or consumed. Some witches are ruthless, others are pragmatic, and some are even kind. But the facts remain that witches are the true predators in this world, more so than Vampires or Werewolves. There are no "good" witches here. The main problem with the book is that Roseau is writing some stock charaters here. Lyra is relative unique, but the rest of the cast has some problems and can be mapped to some of the authors earlier efforts. The plot also has some tedious repetativeness in the middle, though there are some fun twists here and there. The ending is much better than Familiar, and sets up a sequel well. I hope for more witches in the future, perhaps a book that explores the death witches and warlocks more. If "emotion" witches can be "evil", death witches should be able to be "good".

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I like that the book focused on witches and the different ... By lo' My only complaints are the need for the characters, in most of her books, to have control or total control over another. I wrote a review before that mentioned the Stockholm Syndrome. I like that the book focused on witches and the different disciplines but once again, women are taking unwanted control over women.

Enjoyed By Robert M Another interesting series, I just hope this does not delay the Madison Wolves continuation. This book was very good and though it is only the first in a series, it felt complete, unlike many other books that are part of a series (which feel too episodic). The characters all feel real and complete and though Verity seems a bit darker that she is letting on, I can't wait to see what she has in store for Lyra, Felicity and Jaime next. Also can Raelyn repair the damage she has done.

It started out a little slow, but once I got into it, I couldn't put it down because I couldn't wait to find out what would happen to the characters. The story centers around Sam, who had Bulgarian parents who immigrated to Canada, and his old-world grandmother named him as her heir. He flew to Bulgaria with his friend Ben for an interesting trip into the past and his heritage. Sam's parents insists that he look up some relatives once he arrives, and after meeting them, he gets swept up into an archaeological mystery that could have global effects. The archaeological dig is at an ancient Thracian site, and Sam's relative, an archaeological professor, thinks he has made a historic discovery. Sam and Ben end up going with Sam's cousin Kossara to a village in the Rhodopes mountains, where one event leads to another, and they realize the danger that they are all in because they have knowledge that Big Brother wants to keep quiet. It becomes a race against time (and Big Brother) to find a powerful artifact that could have far-reaching implications if found. There were a few punctuation errors that distracted me from time to time, but overall, I really enjoyed the book, and I recommend it. It's a great thriller with ties to ancient history. The ending took me by surprise and left me wanting more...hopefully the author will write more adventures for Sam, Ben, and Kossara. If there would be a sequel, I would definitely read it.I received this book from Goodreads First Reads.

As someone who has never been to Bulgaria, I thought the author did a great job in introducing the reader to the people, places, and rich history of this small country. I felt a connection to the main characters, who, like me, are from a big city in North America. It felt as though I myself was travelling with these men and discovering the country's sites and relics alongside them. The story line is captivating and makes the book hard to put down until the very end. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a sense of adventure and a desire to learn about a little known ancient culture.

Interesting but slow in the beginning By Shrilaxmi This book was very very slow and the story hadn't really progressed much even after a hundred pages but the rest of the story easily made up for that. It was so well researched and was really interesting and fun even though I didn't know the first thing about the Thracian civilization and Bulgaria. The second half of the book had great pace and was full of suspense. It ends with a cliffhanger and you don't really know what happens to the 'thing' Sam ( the protagonist )and his friends find. But an issue I had with this book is that Sam really had no personality. Sure he played quite a big role in the story but his character was pretty bland.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Better than Big Katz for Med Students By Brent Schnipke For medical students, this book is significantly better than its counterpart, "Big Katzung." This version is more succinct and focuses on the clinically important concepts and drugs. The review questions are also great for assessing knowledge. There are occasionally subjects covered in "Big" Katzung that don't translate to the small version, so keep that in mind, but generally these are low yield. Overall, a better purchase than the big version for most pharmacology needs.

By Edward Kim Good questions, but review is not quite as comrehensive as compared to LIR Pharmacology. If you don't have the time for Katzung's Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, LIR is a better bet. I wish that they had simply added the questions to the Basic and Clinical Pharmacology so I wouldn't have to buy this book for them and put out slightly more comprehensive review version with the same questions for those that are time-strapped.

A beautiful and talented actress, Mary Robinson was one of the most famous women of her time. But Mary was destined always to be betrayed by the men she loved: by her father, who abandoned his family; by her husband who bankrupted the family with his gambling and humiliated his young wife with numerous affairs; and by the Prince of Wales, later King George IV, who fell in love with Mary when he saw her playing Perdita in A Winter's Tale. Mary gave up everything for her prince - her career, her husband and her independence - only to be cruelly abandoned when his affections turned elsewhere.

Lady Of Passion, by Freda Lightfoot

From Booklist If there is one thing life has taught Mary Darby Robinson, it is that you can never really count on a man. As a child, Mary observed how horribly her father treated her mother. Mary’s feckless first husband, Tom Robinson, not only insisted that she give up her long-held dream of becoming an actress, he also gambled away their money and openly consorted with other women during their marriage. Forced to turn to the stage to support herself and her child, Mary is surprised when her acting draws the notice of the Prince of Wales. As it turns out, however, the prince is more interested in Mary than in her rendition of Perdita from A Winter’s Tale. Mary soon finds herself giving up everything—her career, her marriage, and her independence—for the prince’s declaration of undying love, only to find that a royal’s word is like pie crust: easily broken. Lightfoot carefully embroiders her latest absorbing novel with plenty of fascinating historical details about the hopes and heartbreaks of the real Mary Robinson. --John Charles

She didn't try to make Mary into a stronger character. She remained (I think) fairly true not only to the era and that mindset but the person she was writing about. Yes, Mary is a bit of a dishrag when it comes to obeying. She's self-absorbed and dang it she can be downright irritating sometimes! But that is where the writer has triumphed in this to make you still want to get to the end. Thank you, author, for actually sticking to your guns and telling the hard tale. I appreciate it!

I am so glad I didn't have to live back then. I'm not on a soapbox for Women's Rights but I would have a hard time having to obey all men. This biography paints an all too true story of Mary Robinson, the Prince's mistress. She is married at 15. Her young husband gets caught up in the wrong crowd and goes to prison. She is famous for her beauty but at the end there are no friends or health left. I thought this was a truly sad story. Give this book a chance.

Was Paul of Tarsus the Real Founder of Christianity?

Paul is a pivotal character of history. From a relative first-century obscurity, to a modern international figure, no one, aside from Jesus Christ himself, has been so influential. An absence of some acquaintance with the name "Paul," tells more about one's self than ought to be known.

The Persecutor

Exactly when Paul began his bloody mission of savagery against the church of Christ is unknown with any degree of precision. The fear of him was significant, and those beyond the borders of Palestine trembled at the mention of the name of this "wolf" who stalked "the fold of the Lamb" (Acts 9:13,26; cf. 26:11).

Saul of Tarsus first appears in the biblical record as a witness to the stoning of Stephen, the first martyr to the cause of Christ-even "consenting" to his death (Acts 7:58; 9:1). Henceforth his persecution of Christians, as portrayed in the book of Acts via his own testimony, was relentless-though he thought sincerely he was doing Jehovah's will (23:1; 26:9). Pursuing the saints even unto foreign cities (26:11), he beat, imprisoned, and had them put to death (22:19). Later he would write that "beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and made havoc of it" (Galatians 1:13). The horrible memories of these vicious attacks would linger with the sensitive apostle for the balance of his earthly days (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:9; Ephesians 3:8; 1 Timothy :15).

That frenzied ambition to exterminate Christianity from the face of the earth was to radically change, however. And the record of how that occurred is as amazing as it is inspiring.

A swashbuckling, patriotic tale of romance, villainy and adventure on the high seas, written by American author Winston Churchill (not to be confused with British statesman Winston S. Churchill), Richard Carvel was a publishing phenomenon in its time, selling more than 2 million copies in a nation of 76 million people. The story opens around 1765 with young Richard Carvel, an orphaned descendant of English nobility, living on his grandfather's estate in colonial Annapolis, Maryland. He witnesses growing discontent with the rule of King George III and observes the transformation of his childhood playmate, Dorothy Manners, into a celebrated debutante. Richard's treacherous uncle Grafton, determined to claim his inheritance, plots to have him kidnapped by pirates bound for the West Indies. After Richard is rescued by Scottish sea captain John Paul, he arrives in England and meets some of its most influential noblemen — gaining an inside view of the tyranny and corruption against which his fellow Colonials were prepared to rebel. Upon learning that his grandfather has died and his uncle has claimed his inheritance, Richard returns to Maryland, where he joins the struggle for American independence. He participates in one of the Revolution's greatest sea battles alongside the captain who had once rescued him -- now known as John Paul Jones. He also fights to regain his inheritance and win the hand of his beloved Dorothy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Revolutionary War-era adventure story By Bomojaz This was Churchill's first historical novel (his second book), and it was wildly popular (historical fiction was all the rage at the time). Set at first around Annapolis, it's about a boy (Carvel) who is kidnapped and sent to England by pirates under his wicked uncle's direction in order to cheat him out of his estate. Meeting all sorts of major figures of the day, including John Paul Jones and Edmund Burke, he has all kinds of adventures in London. When the war breaks out he goes to sea again, this time aboard a ship commanded by Jones. He participates in the famous sea battle between the "Bonhomme Richard" and the "Serapis" (these might be the best scenes in the book). Wounded, he is brought to London to recuperate; he marries his childhood sweetheart there and they both sail to Annapolis to live. It's a rousing good adventure story, though it does have some major flaws. The biggest for me was that Carvel is the narrator of his own story, which makes for very awkward situations when he is involved in heroic and daring deeds. How does a "hero" brag, or even talk, about himself under those circumstances? Well, he can't, so Churchill has to come with ways to get around that, which is not too easy or natural at times. Some of the character portrayals are pretty stiff and unbelievable, the worst perhaps being George Washington (Jones he gets down fairly well). The novel presents a very idealized story with all things either black or white, good or evil, right or wrong; yet the historical aspects of the book are accurate (Churchill did his homework). If one can suspend belief along the way in terms of character portrayal, and take the book on the level of pure adventure story, one might get enjoyment from Churchill's book.

A fascinating book and not just because of its famous author By A Customer Winston Churchill wrote this book when he was still in his twenties ; this intrigued me enough to read the book. It is a novel that focuses on the life of Richard Carvel ; a wealthy young man from a prominent Maryland family just before and during the Revoloutionary War. Although sweeter and more sentimental than the modern approach itis still a captivating and exciting story.

Spencer If you like historical epics and tales of adventure on the high seas, you will probably enjoy this book, which was a huge best seller when it was published in 1899. Richard Carvel weaves strands of fiction (the story of a young boy/man from colonial Maryland) with a carefully researched and polished presentation of historical figures and events (e.g., the naval battle in which John Paul Jones said "I have not yet begun to fight!").Part swashbuckler, part romance, and part historical epic, it provides not only a glimpse into the world of 18th-century America and England, but also into the mindset of late Victorian-era America -- the era in which it was written. So it's a doubly historical and fascinating book.

There is so much to see and explore in the area that it can be overwhelming. This book has some great suggestions for how to plan your activities, and includes kid-friendly activity highlights. It has enough info to serve as a main guide book. The only shortcoming we experienced with the book was a lack of info regarding dog/pet-friendly options. But overall we were very pleased with it!

We chose this book due to the great reviews. There is a sample trip planned for those with kids, this was a hit with our five kids. We found a lot of good tips and great places to visit. Usually we just use good old google to help us plan our trips, but having this book was a great asset. I would recommend this book to anyone planning on visiting the olympic peninsula.

"Five successive cohorts of middle-school students at Columbia Secondary School have participated in this program. Their progress in developing argumentation skills is meticulously documented and remarkable." --Dan Novak, Assistant Principal, Columbia Secondary School for Math, Science and Engineering, New York, NY

"For teachers wondering how best to take advantage of new technology and the ease with which students use it, this book offers a promising answer. We have used the method with great success." --Michael Melendez, 7th grade Social Studies teacher, PS 161, New York City

"Kuhn's work has radically raised our expectations of what teachers and students can accomplish when they set themselves to arguing about topics they care deeply about, using digital tools to hone their skills."--Lucy M. Calkins, Robinson Professor in Children's Literature and Founding Director of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project

"We've long been admirers of Kuhn's work and we're excited now to see how her argumentation and inquiry curricula will work in Singapore. It's essential that our students learn to think independently, and this approach indeed seems a path to get them there." --Dr. Christine Kim-Eng Lee, Assoc. Professor and Head, Curriculum Teaching & Learning, National Institute of Education of Singapore; Dr. Yew Jin Lee, Assoc. Professor, Natural Sciences and Science Education, National Institute of Education of Singapore

"We have had good success in introducing middle-school students to argumentation with this method, and they then progress with enthusiasm to the more classical debate forms." --Erik Fogel, Director New York City Urban Debate League

"We have used this curriculum over several years with outstanding results. We are seeking to make the program available to more students in our goal to raise the level of education in all of Latin America." --Hilario Marrero, Principal, Fray Ramon Pane School, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

"Argue With Me is a useful guide for educators keen on the process of argumentation and its application in the classroom. As an educator implementing argumentation in my History classroom, I have found myself referring to the book frequently for guidance and inspiration to make the process more meaningful for the students. The biggest draw is the limitless possibilities for implementation across various subjects. To me, this is what makes Argue With Me a compelling proposition for all educators." --Jason Chen Quansheng, High School History Teacher, Singapore

The discussion of findings from supporting experimental research is easy to follow By joao m dasilva I have used AWM to support college-level ESL writing and reading instruction. It details a curriculum from planning to assessment, complete with handouts and video clips of different phases of implementation. The discussion of findings from supporting experimental research is easy to follow, covering different aspects of argumentative development, such as evaluating evidence, and metacognitive skills. The approach’s mediated interactions appeals to the 2016 classroom reality of ubiquitous social media, and the authors’ suggestion to work in dyads and teams has resulted in higher motivation. The chapter on assessment has been really helpful to convey the effectiveness of the approach to my director. Teachers, students, instruction designers and supervisors will learn a lot from this book.

A great curriculum to help teenage ESL students in their English academic writing By Kathy Liu I had been searching for a curriculum which can help teenage ESL students thrive in their academic writing before I was introduced to Dr Kuhn’s work. After reading thoroughly about the multiple longitudinal research Dr Kuhn and her colleagues conducted with the curriculum, I’ve decided to implement it in my next English writing class. The methodology proposed by this curriculum presents full consideration from a metacognitive perspective. The argumentive competence and multi-perspective thinking skills underscored in this curriculum may not only facilitate my students in their academic writing but in their decision-making as well. The curriculum is extremely teacher-friendly in that the instructions are easy to follow, and the resources included, such as the student-engaging topics and activities, can save teachers a considerable amount of preparation time. As an educational practitioner, I’d say this curriculum has set a great example of practically connecting research findings in cognitive psychology with classroom teaching.

Lynn Professor Kuhn's work has helped blaze a trail for the application of an argument-centered instructional approach throughout the K-12 curriculum. Her work has the force of a triple-threat: she presents the pedagogical theory for classroom instruction through argument, she (along with her co-authors on this text) have put together some of the basic building blocks of an argument-based curriculum, and she has conducted credible academic research demonstrating the undeniable performance gains that middle school students experience when required to build and make arguments throughout their literacy instruction. It is hard to imagine a forward-thinking educator not wanting to own and to read this book. -- Les Lynn, Founder and CEO, Argument-Centered Education
