Although a fictionalized account, the author delves into the true and sordid history of the witch hunts of the time. The is an excellent book for those who appreciate a good yarn as well as desiring to learn more about the witchcraft trials in England. Ms. Crowther goes into great detail, for example describing prison life and conditions for the "accused". She also writes with real knowledge about the dubious methods the witchfinders used to discern who was considered a "witch", such as the "pricking" and "dunking" tests. Clearly, she has done her research and writes with real authenticity. This is a page turner that although painfully sad and gruesome at times feel very true to what actually happened in seventeenth century England. The characterization, dialect, descriptions of the Craft rituals and the infamous Witchfinder General, Matthew Hopkins (a true historical figure) all come to life in a very powerful story. Highly recommended!

Great idea, poor execution By Nightlark I understand Crowther's motivation for writing the book and the concept is great but the fiction writing just didn't grab me. Her prose is jerky, the story pacing wasn't consistent. The structure is odd. I feel like she could have used a few more revisions and a better editor.Still, I think this is a significant work and a must read for anyone interested in British Traditional Witchcraft. I think this might be Crowther's only novel, she does better with non fiction, so keep that in mind when reading.
