NAMED TO KIRKUS REVIEWS' BEST BOOKS OF 2015 The Life and Times of Bob Cratchit is a compelling, inspirational back story to the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, focusing primarily on the life of Robert Cratchit, Scrooge’s clerk. As he grows up facing poverty and hardship in both rural England and a squalid section of London, young Robert puts to practice the lessons learned from his insightful, coal mining father, Peter, to eventually become the man countless millions have loved to watch in the old and the new movie versions of A Christmas Carol, trotting about town with Tiny Tim on his shoulder. In The Life and Times of Bob Cratchit, we witness Robert’s own personal odyssey and evolution, and follow him in his encounters with both challenging and inspiring circumstances, ultimately bringing him to be a key player—if not an unsung hero—in Ebenezer Scrooge’s miraculous transformation on that special Christmas morning.

Have you ever wondered what the true Biblical, post-apocalyptic, End Times will look like? Where society has totally collapsed and evil forces are at work, both worldwide and locally, to take control of what is left? In this SHTF/prepper doomsday scenario, nuclear bombs smuggled into shipping containers have blown up several American port cities. Riots have broken out among the hungry survivors. ISIS terrorists have sabotaged train tracks to cause derailments, poisoned municipal water supplies, smuggled ground-to-air missiles into the country and shot down passenger airplanes, and crop-dusted crowded cities with Ebola. Others have attacked electrical sub-stations to shut down the electrical grid and make sure that anyone left alive is in the dark, just as with an EMP. In the face of all this death and destruction, most of the survivors foolishly try and prepare for a return to normalcy. Several Christian prepper families have converged upon an agreed-upon retreat location to try and survive what is clearly a final break-down of society, just as was predicted in the Bible. Join Jesse, his wife Mary, their daughter Melissa, and their prepper friends from church who have, after years of prepping and stockpiling supplies, are forced to go to their retreat location in hopes of fighting and surviving all of the multiple threats to come.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Reminiscent of a classic Twilight Zone episode By Adventure Fan Day 362 is a descent into darkness, where human nature is depicted at its very worst. After a cataclysmic event, the President and a handful of officials, Secret Service agents, and Marines are locked in a Cold War era bunker for a year. It doesn't take long before mistrust, vengeance, lies, and selfishness rear their heads in this pit of vipers. The atmosphere is claustrophobic and tense, surreal in the way of a great episode of The Twlight Zone or the Outer Limits, and the old bunker reinforces that sort of feel. Though the rats emerge, the greatest danger comes from mankind. This book is something of a horror parable in which avarice and stupidity is rewarded with a slow kind of justice. There are no heroes here... It's not that kind of book. The author weaves a social commentary into the prose and dialogue which strikes a chord with readers like me who have no abiding faith in our nation's leaders. Watching them tear at each other like cats in a sack was fun.For fans of horror and dark fiction, Day 362 is sure to satisfy.

Wow...I have read nearly 270 books in this genre and never have I come across something like this. It will make your skin crawl and for those with a weak stomach..be warned! This is the story of a power-hungry woman who almost brought down a country destined to become a superpower.

Tzu-hsi—the empress dowager of the Manchu dynasty—manipulated her way into the heart of the palace almost a century and a half ago, using her charm, looks, and intellect to get what she wanted.

It wasn’t long before she was hiding in the Summer Palace in Peking, running the government behind the curtain and scheming to grow her power at the emperor’s expense.

But when foreign intervention and internal strife combined to threaten her empire, she enlisted the help of a devious eunuch and resorted to extreme tactics to deal with the crisis.

The emperor sought help from the intelligentsia in a bid to stay in charge and reform the government, but he made a critical mistake by placing his trust in an ambitious general who had the power to ruin everything.

Filled with colorful imagery, forbidden liaisons, sneaky maneuverings, heroes, and villains, this novel tells how one woman sought to rise to the pinnacle of power in a male-dominated society—and how a dedicated emperor tried to stop her.

No man is closer to a woman than her confessor, not her father, not her brother, not her husband. -Spanish saying Vicente de Rocamora, the epitome of a young renaissance man in 17th century Spain, questions the goals of the Inquisition and the brutal means used by King Philip IV and the Roman Church to achieve them. Spain vows to eliminate the heretical influences attributed to Jews, Moors, and others who would taint the limpieza de sangre, purity of Spanish blood. At the insistence of his family, the handsome and charismatic Vicente enters the Dominican Order and is soon thrust into the scheming political hierarchy that rules Spain. As confessor to the king’s sister, the Infanta Doña María, and assistant to Philip’s chief minister, Olivares, Vicente ascends through the ranks and before long finds himself poised to attain not only the ambitious dreams of the Rocamora family but also—if named Spain’s Inquisitor General—to bring about an end to the atrocities committed in the name of the blood purity laws. The resourceful young man must survive assassination attempts from a growing list of ruthless foes in both Church and court, solve a centuries-old riddle to quell rumors of his own impurity of blood, and above all, suppress his love for the seemingly unattainable Doña María.

First-Rate Historical Novel By Man of La Book Rocamora by Donald Michael Platt is a historical fiction book taking place in 17th Century Spain. This book was the 2012 finalist in the International Book Awards for Historical Fiction.Rocamora by Donald Michael Platt is based on the life of Vicente de Rocamora a poet, fighter and Dominican priest who was thrust into the scheming court of King Philip IV. Rocamora became the confessor for the king's younger sister, the beautiful Infanta Doña María and was considered as a strong candidate for Inquisitor General.I found this book to be a first-rate historical novel; I learned a lot of history from the book, about life in Spain and the Inquisition, as well as following the story in vivid detail. Mr. Platt weaves his story around the history and doesn't change the facts to fit his story (at least I couldn't find any glaring cases of such). The novel certainly let's the reader feel the glory of Spain fading during the reign of Philip IV, while Count Duke Olivares acting as prime minister (in today's terms). The author also weaves in the consequences which Spain suffered under religious fanatics, anti-Semitism and corruption of the aristocracy. This is a solid, well written historical novel with plenty of historical background, the dialogue is believable with Spanish words and phrases peppered throughout (the author always manages to translate them or let you know what they mean based on further reading). The narrative keeps the reader turning the pages with. The author describes each outfit, room, weapon and characters to extreme detail, while it sometimes weighed down the story I found them to be interesting as well as part of the charm and authenticity of the book.

Woodland My knowledge of the history of Spain is lacking in comparison to my knowledge of the history of England and France. Therefore any time I find a book that can educate me about Spanish history I jump all over it. When that book also keeps me enthralled and turning the pages it's a bonus.Rocamora is the first of two books based in fact. While little is left to history of the real Rocamora Mr. Platt builds a tale from can be found. This first book takes through Vicente Rocoamora's adolescence - where his learning is more "of the street" than the typical training path of a young noble. A vendetta of sorts has left him, a second son, on the outside of the family holdings as his father is killed and his addled older brother is under the control of the family enemy. Vicente is forced into the priesthood but little do they know the levels to which he will climb. The book does take place during the last years of the Spanish Inquisition - which is not one of Spain's shining moments in history. It does not shy away from the horrors that were visited upon the poor souls who fell into its keeping. These passages are not easy to read but any book that covers difficult subjects such as these are difficult - much evil has been perpetrated throughout history in the name of God.This is a history lover's book. There is lots of (at least to me) fascinating detail about all facets of life during this time. Vicente as a character is very fleshed out and despite his stand offishness I rather liked him. I'm already 3/4s of the way through the second book and it's just as good as this one. This is a book jam packed with fascinating historical information and written in such a way as to draw the reader in from page one. It is one of those books where I was tapping, tapping, tapping to turn the pages of my Nexus. I've learned a bit more about the history of Spain and about a very interesting man who played a role in that history.4.5

As an historian myself, I am turned off by novelists who pretend to write historical fiction without doing adequate research into the time period and culture they are writing about. That is not the case here. Mr. Platt's research on this book more than satisfies even the crankiest critics such as myself. Add to that a collection of interesting and believable characters, a gripping plot, and superb writing, and its easy to see why this book was an International Book Awards finalist. In my view it ranks with the best of Colleen McCullough, James Michener, and Edward Rutherfurd. Highly recommended.

A fine story well told By Christie M This clever and intriguing romance-mystery is set at the 12th century court of Eleanor of Aquitaine, one of my favorite historical figures. Eleanor summons her champion, Sir Thomas Lynford, to catch a jewel thief who is robbing titled members of her court. Tom has been earning his way by winning tournament prizes and she plans to reward him for catching the thief with marriage to a pretty and very wealthy heiress.Tom, however, has his own ideas. He may not have land, but he enjoys tournaments and he finds himself attracted to Lady Yvonna del Raphael, a penniless widow whom Eleanor brought back with her from Cyprus. All the characters hide secrets from one another, Yvonna especially. She is attracted to Tom, but she dares not confess that her mother is dying in a nearby monastery and how desperate she is for money to pay a good doctor. She and Tom reach a stalemate where, in order for them to save their love each must risk what he and she most fears to expose.Ms. Banning displays her excellent knowledge of medieval history in the little details of Eleanor’s court—the loud blare of shawms, styles of dress, the celebrations, the role of a champion, and a ruling monarch’s responsibilities. She depicts the adventurous Eleanor as open-handed and generous. A queen who demands obedience with a wink and a smile and, at age 70, still has an eye for a handsome young man.

So many little details make the castle come alive, and I can almost hear the music. It's a delicious love story, too, one that Queen Eleanor does not approve of. The tension builds... I loved it.

Ten people are murdered in an inheritance-motivated feud at the Bodkin residence in 1741. Following the killings, John Bodkin becomes heir to that estate in Galway. He is now free to marry Catherine Bermingham, the gorgeous daughter of Lord Athenry. But their plans are clouded by the ensuing trial in which John's cousin, Shawn Bodkin, is one of those convicted. In a statement from the gallows, Shawn accuses John of fratricide in an earlier conflict. Instead of protesting his innocence, John goes on the run only to be apprehended by the army. At his trial, John refuses to plead either guilty or not guilty to the murder of his brother Patrick. Only Catherine knows why. She is the keeper of a dark secret, which John insists must remain hidden, even if it costs him his freedom or his life. Based on real events, A Story of the Bodkin Murders explores a fascinating tale of treachery, greed and romance in 18th century Ireland.

A Story of the Bodkin Murders, by Paul B McNulty

About the Author I write historical novels based on real events in 18th century Ireland. My apprenticeship in writing commenced at University College Dublin where I edited an engineering magazine, The Anvil. Afflicted with wanderlust, I travelled west to Ohio State and MIT to continue my studies to master’s and doctoral level. While in Boston, my interest in history unfolded through participation in the Committee for Justice in Northern Ireland and in the anti-Vietnam war movement. On return to Ireland, I honed my writing skills, publishing scientific papers as well as writing on food-related issues in the popular media. Following a career in Biosystems Engineering at UCD, I revisited my historical interest by studying “The genealogy of the Anglo-Norman Lynches who settled in Galway.” The consequent discovery of a treasure-trove of forgotten Irish stories inspired me to write Spellbound by Sibella, a finalist in the 2012 William Faulkner Novel Competition. My debut novel deals with the turbulent romance between Irish beauty, Sibella Cottle and the rakish Sir Harry Lynch-Blosse of Mayo. Critiques from a writer’s group, The Corner Table, of which I am a founding member, guide my writing. I am at an advanced stage in my second novel, The Abduction of Anne O’Donel, a finalist in the 2012 William Faulkner Novel-in-Progress Competition. My third novel, The Bloody Bodkins, is at an earlier stage of development. It explores the possibility that a man may have been hanged for a crime he did not commit. I live in Dublin with my wife, Treasa Ní Chonaola. We have three children, Dara, Nora and Meabh, and a grandchild, Lily Marie. I derive inspiration from the wild splendour of Mayo and Connemara. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. RIVETING HISTORICAL FICTION By Patricia O'reilly 'A Story of the Bodkin Murders' by Paul B McNulty is the riveting story of a true happening in 18th century Ireland. In keeping with McNulty's two previous novels,'Spellbound by Sibella' and 'The Abduction of Anne O'Donel' the research is detailed and development of characters, era and sense of location impressive. McNulty's original source material was Pue's Occurrences, a 4-page twice weekly newspaper, precursor to The Freeman's Journal. The facts of the story are that in 1741 three members of the Bodkin family and seven servants are murdered in an inheritance-motivated feud at the Bodkin residence. Following the killings, John Bodkin becomes heir but a year later he was hanged drawn and quartered having been found guilty of the murder of his older brother Patrick in 1739. John was the second son of Counsellor-at-law, John Bodkin and Mary Clarke of Carrowbeg House, Belclare, a village four miles west of Tuam, Co Galway. On the gallows, he refused to acknowledge his guilt of the crime. Instead, as the noose tightened around his neck, he proclaimed,'I forgive Mankind' - implying he was not guilty. McNulty has used these facts to build an impressive story of inheritance, treachery, passion, intrigue and local politics. The beautiful Catherine Bermingham, the third daughter of Lord Athenry,is betrothed to John Bodkin. Much of the story hinges on protecting her reputation resulting from a drunken incident with John's elder brother Patrick who was subsequently found dead. Until John was denounced as his murderer from the gallows by his cousin, it was presumed Patrick had died from natural causes.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Paul B. McNulty's second book that I have read ... By MA Paul B. McNulty's second book that I have read so far, The story of the Bodkin Murders, is an infusion of Sherlock Holmes in its detailed, gory descriptions of murders, Synge's Riders to the Sea, in its annihilation of the entire family, except in Synge, they were engulfed by the howling sea, while here they were brutally murdered down to the last child - family of ten and Poirot's cunning in resolving it. In the aftermath of these horrific murders, astute investigations are carried out with intriguing and harrowing scenario of the justice system in the pursuit of solving the case. Juxtaposed also are the two opposing social realities painted in somber colours of a hierarchical order in which the servants' squalid living conditions are depicted equally with those of the high class living quarters. As the language flows in poetic profusion, adorned with the use of simile and metaphor, the book measures up very well to a classy, literary, detective story where there is also a sense of an inescapable rhythm of movement with characters travelling from place to place such as Dublin, Liscarrow andLynch. Many subliminal responses are surfaced notably, to show how people would usually fare under such testing times. Ironically, as my husband Dr. Soheil Ahmed rightly points out that Dr. McNulty's choice of the word 'Bodkin' meaning 'dagger', has also been referred to exactly as one in Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Excerpt from Sunday-School Lessons, on the Teachings of Jesus: Chiefly on the Sermon on the Mount and the ParablesThe forty-three Lessons contained in this volume are based on some of the most impressive teachings of Jesus, as reported in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. As a matter of convenience, these teachings are here considered in the order in which they are reported in the New Testament, - not in their chronological order, which would be of little value in a work of this kind, even if it could be satisfactorily determined. The purpose of the book is to make those who use it better acquainted with the mind and heart of Jesus, and to imbue them with his spirit, not to inform them concerning his outward life. These Lessons have been extensively used in Unitarian Sunday Schools, as they appeared in monthly parts, and it is confidently expected that they will be put to still wider use now that they are offered in this more attractive and convenient form.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This novel is one of the first vampire novels and is one of the first to delve into the psychic and emotional aspects of vampirism. It holds a great deal of psychological suspense in which the vampire feeds off more than just blood.

There's really no sexual overtones and all of the main characters are interested in people of the opposite sex at various points in time. There are only two kisses in the entire book and that's as far as it goes. So if you wanted this book for sex, look elsewhere. That said, this is really a splendid read. The ending is the most shocking part, so make sure to read to the very end. Definitely a twist you don't expect. The whole concept of a vampire who is focused on becoming a literary genius by stealing artistic ability is fresh and exciting. Highly recommended.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A Classic of the Genre By Peter N. Jones This is an early classic in the genre. Not about the usual blood sucking vampire you find in today's books - although blood is part of it - but rather about a vampire, love, and the psychology of having something desired. Don't be fooled by the beginning either, it is the ending that contains the twist and surprise. A must read if you are a fan of the dark, mysterious, and forbidden.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Scary and Strange By C. Richard Not about the usual blood sucking ghoul, but a vampire just the same. It was written a while ago, so the language might sound a little funny to more modern ears. I understand that the author had a very bizarre history. The ending is quite surprising and shocking - reminded me of a good horror movie, but without the usual monsters and gore fest. I don't know where the writer of the book description saw all the sexual overtones - if any - they were buried pretty deeply if you ask me.

Learn the Incredible Story of Seattle Seahawk Russell Wilson!

Read on your PC, Mac, smartphone, tablet or Kindle device!

In Russell Wilson: The Inspiring Story of One of Football’s Greatest Quarterbacks, you'll read about the inspirational story of football’s star, Russell Wilson. This short unauthorized biography of Russell Wilson highlights the greatest moments of his career. Russell Wilson may have recently entered the NFL, but his impact on the Seattle Seahawks’ franchise was immediate. In just his early twenties, Wilson is already a Super Bowl Champion, a feat very few quarterbacks can ever say they accomplish. In this book, we’ll explore Russell Wilson’s journey to the NFL, as well as his impact on the game.

Here is a preview of what is inside this book:

  • Childhood and Early Life
  • High School Years
  • College Years at North Carolina State
  • Russell’s NFL Career
  • Russell Wilson as a Leader
  • Wilson’s Personal Life
  • Russell’s Dual Professional Careers

An excerpt from the book:

There is no doubt that Russell Wilson is one of the best quarterbacks in the game today. In just his second season as the starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, Russell Wilson took them to a dominating Super Bowl victory. While his discipline and dedication toward the sport have led him to where he is today, Russell Wilson graciously gives credit to his father for teaching him everything he needed to become what he is today. In fact, he is rooted in sports through his family. His grandfather, Harrison B. Wilson Jr., played college basketball and football at Kentucky State University; his father, Harrison Wilson III, also played college football and basketball, and was with the San Diego Chargers for one preseason before being released.

Dedication and a little luck played significant roles in making Russell Wilson the player he is. He committed himself to being a talented athlete because he always loved sports and has an extremely competitive spirit. He also had a little luck play its part because he is genetically gifted and was born into a family that loves competition.

As a result, Russell Wilson was able to take his athleticism to the next level. His dedication to what he does is also deeply rooted in his strong religious values. He is known for being a devout Christian, often mentioning his faith and thanking God during his press conferences. By having a dedicated father, who taught him everything he needed to know about sports, and his personal dedication, high work ethic, and strong religious beliefs, Russell Wilson learned everything it takes to be a successful quarterback in the NFL.

Russell is recognized by many of his co-players and coaches as one of the most competitive players on the whole Seattle Seahawks team. While most quarterbacks have an average height of 6’4”, allowing them better visibility of the entire field, Russell is one of the shortest NFL players today, at only 5’11”. However, despite having a height disadvantage, Russell’s competitive spirit and dedication to becoming one of the best quarterbacks in the league have allowed him to take on a leading role that most critics would have said he was incapable of achieving.

If you’re a Seahawks fan you probably dream about him at night sometimes. This book really transcends the football fan barrier however. It takes a story about a young undrafted quarterback and makes it applicable to other sports and the challenges we all face in life. It talks about the important of family and having a good role model, like Russell’s father. There are a lot of good nuggets in here that were simply unknown to me before learning his story. As an avid football fan myself, I was surprised about some of the things I learned in here, particularly about Russell’s early life where he struggled academically at times but cut deals with bright students to tutor him. The depth of his story contained herein is a testament to the breadth of research done by the author. He wisely uses the formative years of Wilson’s life to start sending his message and then spends the bulk of the book describing his miraculous ascent into the realm of elite quarterbacks. For any sports fan or anyone looking for some motivation, look no further.

Geoffreys really did his research, this book is incredibly thorough, but also a fast read. ESPN-fanboys as well as those without a love of football will each love this biography. By the end of the book you feel like best friends with Russell Wilson.I especially loved reading about Wilson’s leadership, on and off the field. It’s always rousing to read how these celebrity athletes show by example the importance of being good guys, instead of selfish jerks. The section on Wilson’s dual sports was also really good. It’s incredible that some people are talented and driven enough to play two sports at the professional level, when so many fail to make the cut once. This is definitely worth your read. It captures the essence of a good biographic sketch, and inspires you to be better. It’s possible to find heroes today, and this book proves it.

Well written biography By Mo Birch There’s not a single football buff who has not heard of Russell Wilson by now, and as a Seahawks fan I’m probably a bigger supporter of his than the average enthusiast. This book is a great read for anyone interested to know more about this great athlete. It’s presented well and takes you from Russell’s childhood to his current successful career, giving you great insight into why he’s so competitive yet humble. With great stats and concise details this is a good biography that not only did I enjoy reading but so did my 10 year old son. He now has a better idea of what it takes to achieve what Wilson has and my respect for Wilson has also increased. This was definitely a good purchase.

Cornwall, England, 1193. Eleanor of Aquitaine, the indomitable dowager queen, has ordered all of England onto a war footing while her son King Richard languishes in a German dungeon. Gwendolyn de Cardinham, the defiant wife of an absent crusader, protects and defends her estate, Penhallam, with her sword and the garrison of men that she commands. While travelling to deliver a captured mercenary of would-be usurper Prince John to a nearby gaol, her constable takes her on a detour to the local prior, who gravely informs her that King Arthur's mythical sword, Caliburn, is destined to be hers. When Gwendolyn discovers that Prince John has been hunting for Caliburn, she realizes she is in a unique position to end the wayward prince's rebellion. Determined to protect Penhallam and its tenants at any cost, Gwendolyn travels to London to present herself to the dowager queen, placing herself in the middle of the brothers' duel for the throne. But Gwendolyn has kept a secret from even her constable that could put all of Penhallam-and herself-at risk if the queen discovers it.

From Kirkus Reviews As Gwendolyn's story builds to its tension-filled climax, Haltom draws the storylines together into a cohesive, largely enjoyable whole. Well-written, well-plotted, and mostly well-paced, a feisty addition to the historical fantasy genre. - *Kirkus Reviews*

The story was intriguing and I didn't want to quit reading to go to work or to do other assorted "have to's". Very creative and thought provoking story line, and especially interesting to see what life could have been like for a woman. Can't wait for the sequel to be published.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interesting take on the descendents of King Arthur By Myra Lowe I like stories about King Arthur and his court. It's not the romance so much as the magic and mystery. There's no Arthur or Merlin here, but there is a very feisty lady, Gwendolyn, who is the central character of the story. She is not the typical lady of the keep. She wears men's clothes more often than not, wields a sword, and trains with the men of arms. What does her husband think of it? Well, he approved of her swordsmanship before he took off to follow Richard the Lionhearted on the Crusades. Her husband has been gone for some time, so greedy in laws believe he is dead and make waves about taking over the lands she has tended for her husband. The heroine decides to present her plight to the queen mother, who is torn between her son's, Richard and the usurper John. Adding to Gwendolyn's concerns is the fact that factions supporting John are massing near her land, another issue she wants to present to the queen mum. Before setting off on her journey, Gwendolyn is told of her connection to King Arthur, and that his sword will come to her when she needs it. Gwendolyn doesn't have time to believe or disbelieve the news, she has other things on her mind. For some reason, Arthur's sword is not referred to as Excalibur. We are never told why. Nor is the relationship between Gwendolyn and the head of her security team ever fully explained. Those were a couple of the frustrations of this narrative.Despite those frustrations, the book flows well and holds the reader's attention. The descriptions of battle practice are interesting and don't get bogged down in describing fancy moves with fancy names. There is dark magic involved as well. All in all, this is a good read for anyone who is interested in Arthurian fiction.I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

By ElianaSK http://itsyouandeverything.com/2015/08/03/gwendolyns-sword-book-review/Rating:3.75Title:Gwendolyn's SwordAuthor:E.A. HaltomI received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review through NETGALLEY.Plot: (Link to goodreads page) This book is historical fiction, which is not a genre I have a lot of experience with. Nevertheless the plot was very interesting. This book had politics, religion, conflict, which was honestly great. The one thing that did not work that well for me, was the pace of the book. It could have been a lot faster, I felt that at times the pace that the plot-line moved in, was so tiring and slow. Other than that, the plot was great and it was very interesting to read.Characters: The characters in this book are vibrant. Gwendolyn is a strong independent woman, and that is what makes the book so interesting. At the same time though, every character in the book is so well woven into the story. Every interaction between the characters in this book seemed to have a purpose, and that made it really interesting to read.Overall Feeling: Overall, I enjoyed reading this book, and if you are a fan of historic fiction I am certain you will enjoy it too. However, if you do not like slow paced books, then this is a book you should not pick up. Nevertheless, I feel like the good things in this book outweigh the bad, and the only reason the rating I am giving it is fairly low, it is because of subjective rather than objective reasons.

In the two months since they brought the apocalypse down on the world, zombies have reduced everything to a shattered scattering of isolated survivor groups clinging to what’s left of their lives. Living day to day, hand to mouth, constantly fighting amid the ruins of what’s left of a civilization that was over seven billion people strong; it isn’t much, but it’s that or become one more monster. One thing zombies have going for them is persistence. Zombies never give up, never get tired, and are always hungry. Zombies might be clumsy and slow, but humans get distracted and make mistakes. The patience of death will always win out against the imperfection of humanity. The clock is ticking on the living, not the dead. Peter Gibson has survived some of the worst the zombies could throw at him in downtown Atlanta, and has managed to help his battered squad carve out a safe spot in rural north Georgia for five thousand souls. But squatting in a tent village, spending the days guarding the perimeter and making scavenging runs for more canned food and dry goods, praying that a zombie horde big enough to roll over the humans doesn’t show up; that’s just a holding action. It doesn’t address the real problem. Zombies. What’s left of the government has been gathering itself at an Air Force base in the northern Midwest. They say they’re working on holding and expanding a secured area, eventually aiming to retake the entire continent. When his camp picks up those radio transmissions, that’s what Peter’s been holding on for two months to hear. But it’s eighteen hundred miles from Georgia to South Dakota, and between the Atlantic and Pacific are over two hundred million zombies. Getting there will take a road trip of nightmare proportions.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another great read By Michael The continuing story of one of the three main characters and his small team is the focus of this book. The characters come to life with their strengths and weaknesses. The setting is dangerous and unforgiving with all the horror a zombie apocalypse provides. It really does take everyone working together to make it. For some survivors, it is another challenge that can be met with creative solutions. Anyone who enjoys good zombie stories will like this.
