But the languages of Ethiopia are not always easy for native speakers of English to master. My introduction to Amharic in 1962 was through hundreds of mimeographed pages of phonetic phrases, not especially transportable beyond the classroom. With the publication of The Essential Guide to Amharic: The National Language of Ethiopia, Andrew Tadross and Abraham Teklu have now provided a thematically organized, compact and efficient handbook for anyone planning to spend time working or traveling in Ethiopia. As a former speaker of Amharic, I found myself looking up once familiar words and phrases that have escaped me over the years. It's a great reference.

Valuable tool to help learn Amharic: New Peace Corps volunteers, existing volunteers, and visitors to Ethiopia would benefit, By Amazon Customer This book would have been valuable to me as a Peace Corps Volunteer. When I was in training (1971), I could ask questions during my language sessions; I would have used this book to reinforce that days' session work. I would have used this book during my two years as a resource to answer Amharic questions and enhance my language skills. I would recommend this book to anyone that is volunteering for service in Peace Corps Ethiopia or plans to visit Ethiopia. I would hope the Peace Corps would provide a copy of this book to its' new volunteers during their training as a reference during their learning of Amharic.

By Bobo I have a family friend who's in the Peace Corps doing development work in Ethiopia. I bought her the Tigrinya book previously, and she said its been a huge help in learning the language. I've just received the Amharic version in the mail to give her. Same format and layout. These books are great. The authors are American and Ethiopian so you can tell the language part is accurate and the book has been geared toward foreigners trying to understand a very complex language.

Most Americans know that many of our high school graduates are falling behind the graduates from other industrialized countries. Shocking and depressing test scores in mathematics, science, language arts, and reading reveal that the majority of our kids seem to be merely treading water academically while their counterparts from China, Germany, Korea, and many other nations surge ahead with significantly higher academic performance. Here's What's Really Wrong With Our Schools reveals the rarely discussed underlying causes of this unnecessary intellectual underachievement and describes straightforward, practical, and affordable steps that must be taken now if America is to restore excellence to the classroom. Unlike many other books that focus on expensive and highly controversial solutions to our educational malaise, solutions that often represent a radical departure from the core values of American society, Here's What's Really Wrong With Our Schools demonstrates a method of changing the fundamental culture currently found in many of our high schools back to one that features high expectations for student achievement and respect for the educational process. Dean Gauger, a National Board Certified high school teacher and veteran of 25 years instructing students in several states, lays out in intimate detail the unbelievably inefficient ways (some would argue that they should be illegal) that many of our high schools are being administered. Students, teachers, and parents are being cheated by short- sighted and self-serving administrative policies that severely restrain academic performance. Not merely a philosophical dissertation, this book describes actual success stories in which Mr. Gauger was able to turn failing students into A and B students by creating an atmosphere of excellence, respect, and high expectations in the classroom.

Dean Gauger is taking a stand for our students and teachers in such a way that most educators are unable to speak for themselves. They fear the system; they fear their very jobs as they give their heart and soul for the elements of education in our public schools.I have never met a teacher who did not love their students. What they have is a calling, a responsibility to prepare students for the future and sadly, as hard as they try the SYSTEM is turning out as Dean calls them on page 124 “Gullible Sheep” .Our educational system is in trouble and the love Dean and his wife Jewel has for the future of the United States and for the teachers in the heat of the battle who are battling two fronts, the system and the students that have accepted the system and leave our schools without the tools that make a strong moral society. This book is a readable and honest effort to wake up parents and those who care about our children to get something changed before it’s too late. United we stand, divided we fall. As if there was not enough in the world to worry about our children are in trouble and Dean is sick and tired of it!Read this book and decide for yourselves if there is room for concern.Pastor Lewis Melton. Worked in special education (PEP) 15 years and yes I witnessed the process in our program first hand.

By Michelle Laszlo-Rath This book delves into the depths of the failing school system and addresses some of the most serious issues currently facing public education. It tells of how public schools administrations no longer promote education, but instead look upon the students as commodities to be processed in a manner in which will make the administration look best. Teachers are expected to be subservient and docile, and look the other way as the administration gives diplomas to students that are functionally illiterate and have difficulties with their multiplication tables. Dean gives an illuminating account of the dysfunctional psyche of the modern school administration and what changes need to be implemented so that positive changes can come forth.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. THE FAMED PHILOSOPHER’S THOUGHTS OF EDUCATION, AND UPBRING OF CHILDREN By Steven H Propp [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 121-page paperback edition.]Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) was a German philosopher who is perhaps the founder of "modern" philosophy, with his focus on epistemology (theory of knowledge); he wrote many books, such as Critique of Pure Reason, Critique of Practical Reason, Critique of Judgement, Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics, Religion Within the Limits of Reason Alone, Lectures on Ethics, On History, Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime, etc.He begins this book with the statement, “Man is the only being who needs education. For by education we must understand nurture (the tending and feeding of the child), discipline… and teaching, together with culture. According to this, man is in succession infant (requiring nursing), child (requiring discipline), and scholar (requiring teaching).” (Pg. 1) Later, he adds, “Man can only become man by education. He is merely what education makes of him.” (Pg. 6)He states, ”One principle of education which those men especially who form educational schemes should keep before their eyes is this---children ought to be educated, not for the present, but for a possibly improved condition of man in the future; that is, in a manner which is adapted to the IDEA OF HUMANITY and the whole destiny of man.” (Pg. 14)He suggests, “Experimental schools must first be established before we can establish normal schools. Education and instruction must not be merely mechanical; they must be founded upon fixed principles; although at the same time education must not merely proceed by way of reasoning, but must be, in a certain sense, mechanical.” (Pg. 21-22)He cautions, “There is nothing to which children become more easily accustomed, and which should be more carefully kept from them, than such highly stimulating things as tobacco, brandy, and warm drinks. Once acquired, it is very difficult to give up these things… The more habits a man allows himself to form, the less free and independent he becomes; for it is the same for man as with all other animals; whatever he has become accustomed to early in life always retains a certain attraction for him in after-life. Children, therefore, must be prevented from forming any habits, nor should habits be fostered in them.” (Pg. 43-44)He observes, “Here we have also to discuss the training of the sense of pleasure or pain. In this our work must be negative; we must see that the child’s sensibility be not spoilt by over-indulgence. Love of ease does more harm than all the ills of life. Therefore it is of the utmost importance that children should be taught early to work. If they have not been over-indulged, children are naturally fond of amusements which are attended with fatigue, and occupations which require exercise of strength. With regard to pleasures, it is best not to let them be dainty, nor to allow them to pick and choose.” (Pg. 52-53)He asserts, ”Moral culture must be based upon ‘maxims,’ not upon discipline; the one prevents evil habits, the other trains the mind to think. We must see, then, that the child should accustom himself to act in accordance with ‘maxims,’ and not from certain ever-changing springs of action… The child should learn to act according to ‘maxims,’ the reasonableness of which he is able to see for himself.” (Pg. 83)Certainly, this book is not one of Kant’s “major works”; still, it is helpful for anyone wanting to get a fuller picture of Kant’s complete philosophy.

“Love and death in the time of Siege... Even today, 451 years after the four terrible months that almost wrested Malta out of its European context and yanked it back into the Muslim world, the allure of the Great Siege of 1565 lives on, and not just in the local collective memory...The Course of Fortune is a good read which gives a reliable version of the events of the siege and should provide many hours of pleasant reading.” ―Louis J. Scerri, author of Malta: Origini Della Civilta Mediterranea/ Malta: Origins of Mediterranean Civilization In three volumes, The Course of Fortune ―A Novel of the Great Siege of Malta, follows the adventures of a young Spanish soldier-of-fortune Francisco de Barai over the course of fifteen of the most turbulent years in the most turbulent century in history, adventures that climax in the Great Siege of Malta of 1565. During that most momentous of all sieges, tens of thousands of Turks descend on the island, defended by some 600 Knights of Malta and another few thousand mercenaries and Maltese civilians. The horrific and heroic events are recounted with the utmost attention to historical accuracy, just as the entire escalating chain of events is played out against a finely researched tapestry of Renaissance values, superstitions and culture. Tony Rothman is a physicist and writer. He received a B.A. in physics from Swarthmore College in 1975, and a Ph.D. from the Center for Relativity at the University of Texas, Austin in 1981. After leaving Texas, he did post-doctoral work at Oxford, Moscow and Cape Town. Rothman’s scientific research has been in cosmology, the study of the early universe, and he has authored approximately sixty scientific papers on that subject. He has taught physics at Princeton, Harvard and elsewhere. Apart from his scientific work, Rothman is the author of eleven books, both fiction and nonfiction. The most recent is Firebird, a scientific suspense novel concerning a race for nuclear fusion (Wildside Press, 2015). He has also authored seven plays, contributes to a number of national magazines, including Scientific American and Discover, and has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.

Suddenly, he's forced to face the gut-wrenching realities that have him swinging and missing life's off-speed pitches. Modern time is intertwined with a nineteenth-century depiction of the birth of a storied rivalry in Curveballs and Changeups.

Immel Not only is this a baseball fan's book but also the story of a man's quest to relive his youth. The story line travels between the 1800's where we witness the "beginning" of base ball and the 2000's where we find a man trying to recapture his youth as a loyal Cub fan wearing "blue" in enemy Cardinal "red" territory. Baseball fans will enjoy the history and play by plays of the game and everyone will love the "Curveballs and Changeups" of Scott's quest to fulfill a childhood dream!! This book would be a great Father's Day gift!!

Kmitta just smacked this one out of the ball park! What park? That's for you to decide. The characters, the detailed history, the setting, the plot - in both CUBS Blue and CARDINAL Red - kept me wanting to read more. How can a CUBS or CARDINALS or any true die hard baseball fan, especially one who is part of a loyal family tradition of sticking with a team, not enjoy this book? With my batting gloves on, this book is two thumbs up!

The book is an easy, well-written read. It's filled with small details that quickly help the reader richly experience the story. The characters are interesting and believable. There's a subtle sense of humor running through the book too. This is a book that hits it out of the park.

I know I'll be going against the majority of reviews here, but this book was merely acceptable. When I saw that Outlaw had four and a half stars, I expected a real page turner, with snappy dialogue, great character development, and a good super powers/magic system. Instead, Origins is a run of the mill YA adventure suited more for the older teen crowd than full adults. The plot goes something like: Formerly nerdy boy gets powers. Boy begins to play sports. Girls start to like him. There's a bully. He has problems at home. He becomes a hero. There is precious little that's original. The writing, while acceptable, isn't exceptional. There are repetitive moments in the book - like the many detailed play by play football games that are described. There is some decent character development at times, like with Hannah, one of the MC's love interests, but many of the other characters are flat, almost caricatures. Also, there are a few somewhat odd... almost promotional plugs in the book that are discordant. For instance, neither the main character or any other major character is portrayed as all that religious, but, about halfway through the book, the MC goes to a church and discovers that his assistant coach is a deacon there. Pretty much immediately the assistant coach writes the MC a check, from the church, to help out with the MC's money problems at home. The MC then says/thinks, "Before I got into my car, I glanced at the check. It was for two thousand dollars. I drove home with shaking hands, crying, praying, and laughing." Little PSA type things like this were a bit discordant for me.So, I'll stick to my guns. I have no idea why so many people have rated this book so highly. It isn't horrible, but it also isn't great. Origins is just a run of the mill, quasi-religious, young adult super hero story.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Chase Jackson is my hero! By Stephanie Newcomb This was an excellent book to read. Knowing it was geared towards young adults and knowing I'm in my upper 30s I was nervous it might not capture my attention. Not only did it capture my attention but I read it fast...then moved on to the next one quickly and finished that one too. I fell in love with the characters. If you are in high school or have ever been in high school you can TOTALLY relate with the main character Chase Jackson and the struggles he has to find himself and fit into the high school scene. You can't help but fall in love with him and his friends. I found myself carving out 10 minutes here and there in my day to read because it was addicting! My only critique (while still giving it 5 starts, mind you) is some editing misses but I am sure they will get worked out with the next edition. And honestly, I'm kind of bummed that there's only 1 more book in the series. Wish it would just keep going. Good work Mr. Janney! Well done on this series. I love to ready but really struggle to find time and in the span of about a month I've read the Outlaw and Infected. It takes a special kind of writing style and content to hold my attention like that!!!

Henry Dowell-Playwright "Triton’s Deep is the story of Enzo, a novice monk determined to find his true identity in a half-drowned world where monastics rule over the people, some whole, some damaged, but all looking to the lost gods of the sea to save them from the disaster they know is surely coming."I have to say, I really enjoyed this new novel by KH Rennie. It runs about 300 pages or so but you'd never know it the way the action moves along. The price is pretty good for that length novel as well. I recommend this to all lovers of fantasy.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Other world of sea people filled with adventure By Jason This book starts off on the shores of a wintry ocean shore below an ancient monastery. It then moves underwater to a world where different gods rule. The protagonist, Enzo, sets out to save his world, unsure of where his alliances lie. Along the way he falls in love. This is a well-written and engaging book that conjurs up a thoroughly convincing alternate reality.

Jesus is not who you think he is. The year is 75 CE. Joseph ben Jude, the nephew of Yeshua, is frail and ailing, but he gathers together stacks of goat-skin parchment and picks up a reed pen. He has a prophecy to fulfill before his death: that he will record the story of his uncle Yeshua. A former Essene and now an Ebionite—the first generation of non-Gentile Christians—Joseph grieves over the destruction of the Temple. He fears the End Times are near. He is also troubled by the accounts already being told of his uncle. His grandmother—a virgin? His uncle—the son of god? Simon Peter—head of the early Church and not his uncle James? Follow Joseph as the suppressed story of Yeshua and the early Church unfolds, revealing a message of hope that resounds throughout the ages and speaks to us even more urgently today.

Joseph tells of the same Jesus (The Master Yeshua) that I learned about as a child, but his words tell a more reasonable, yet just as inspiring, tale. The nephew's perspective left me with what felt like an inner circle knowledge of the life and death of the man we call Jesus. The complex relationships among the disciples and family is fascinating. Phenomenal research went into this historical presentation. The story is well paced and well told. This is a great read for anyone, religious or not, who wishes to gain a greater understanding of what could have gone on in Jesus's life. I find myself wishing this were an actual gospel in the Bible. Great book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Let the words speak for themselves By C A Mathews One of my favourite passages from the book is: '...the rules of men are sometimes as substantial as the wisps that fly from a dandelion.' Another gem, which particularly applies to the God of the Old Testament: 'God is not a Punisher but is full of Mercy.' Whether or not those who adhere slavishly to the New Testament will agree, this book is packed full of truth and wisdom.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An enjoyable read with a fresh perspective on an age-old story... By Tedi L. Trindle Smoothly narrated and meticulously researched, “The Master Yeshua” is a well-crafted work of fiction. Fans of historical novels will enjoy Luck’s evocative prose as she takes her readers back to the time of Jesus, as seen through the eyes of his nephew, Joseph. As the subtitle suggests, the book is written as an “undiscovered gospel”, a first draft written by an old man who was a child during his uncle’s ministry and grew up hearing the story from firsthand accounts of family members and friends. But in this gospel, we learn of the years of Jesus’ life which are unaccounted for in the Bible and what happened after he was crucified. The author also helps us imagine the turbulent times, the deadly politics, and rampant oppression of first century Palestine. It is within this chaotic environment that the Master Yeshua rises to preach not the violent overthrow of the government that his people are waiting for, but love, patience, tolerance and forgiveness in the face of violence, poverty, and oppression. Some modern themes resonate throughout the book, reminding us that, although centuries have passed, many of life’s challenges remain the same. The overall message is one of hope, faith and the good that can come from serving one’s fellow man and lifting up those less fortunate. This is a message for our own times.

Nicholson "The Black Dragon: A Claire-Agon Dragon Book" is a stand-alone fantasy adventure by author Salvador Mercer. This Kindle e-book was approximately 304 printed pages and sold for $0.99 at time of writing this review. Please Note: I was provided with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.General Theme (minor spoilers)After centuries of quiet, an old horror returns to reek havoc upon the land. The authorities are slow to acknowledge any possibility of a return of the Black Dragon; unfortunately the people and the nearby towns are about to pay the high price for this sluggish response. After a couple of failed and disastrous attempts, an elite group of heroes are sent into the Kero Swamp to try to rout out this ancient nemesis. However, clandestine plotting from nobles with different allegiances and personal agendas have placed their own people in the party to make sure their interests are looked after. The results... well let's say they are different than anyone expected. Some thoughts on "The Black Dragon"...1.) a sword and sorcery tale.2.) generally well written and edited.3.) lots of intense encounters, graphically described4.) a plot that keeps keeps moving quickly; there’s not much downtime.5.) important characters can be injured or killed. Adding a degree of realism. In fact, hardly anyone is sacrosanct in this book.6.) cover art... a stunning, eye-catching image7.) appendix... at the back, giving some info on the planet Claire Agon. The Cons:1.a) no map... a map would have given readers a sense of direction, distance and topography. Even more important when you take into account that there were several adversarial factions from different locales found in this novel.1.b) the fact that there was no map to establish a visual relationship to these groups, added to my sense of confusion and disassociation, especially when considering the amount of the clandestine plotting that occurred in this tale.2.) peculiar and unusual reactions, e.g. Olivia reaction to Markus after she discovered his intentions. Locations 1755 and then 2640 (Kindle reader). This was kind of a turning point for me in this work... I reread these passages several times to make sure I had it right.3.) character development and dialogues... see impressions below.Impressions:A very good mid-late Young Adult (YA) tale that maybe just had too much YA qualities that would make it a somewhat uninspiring read for lovers of the serious, Adult orientated, fantasy adventure genre. And while I thought the opening sequence was intense and exciting I felt the overall novel featured some shallow character development along with a fair amount of forced and contrived group-based dialogues.I started off very enthused but became less so, as the novel progressed.Rating...As a mid-late YA read... 4 1/2 StarsAs an Adult FA read... 3 StarsFinal rating... 4 Stars, as it is mentioned on the Amazon.com product page in the teen sectionRay Nicholsonraynicholsonsreviews@hotmail.com@ralannicholson

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not The Typical Dragon-Slayer Story. By Charles Daniel Christopher This novel has an interesting literary universe in which various nations, and factions within those nations, pursue their own agendas while dealing with the recent end of the dragon's hibernation cycle. The protagonist, Olivia Moross, is caught directly between theses competing nations and factions when her status as a member of both one of the nobility and one of the Paladins of her faith cause the aristocracy and the church question her loyalties. There are a few problems with the story. First, the idea that the waking Dragons regard themselves as the true rulers of the world is undercut by their tendency to regard their own powers as "evil" while they refer to the "holy imanations" of the human temples as "evil" as well. It is an unusual being which can view itself as the villain in their own story--so the Dragon is inconsistent on that basis. Second, the author's appendix describes his literary universe as being based on an unusual solar system with silicone based life forms (the Dragons and the "people"). However, the people are far too human in their behaviors and artifacts for that premise to hold. Why would silicone based life forms replicate a humanoid form? Even if they developed into humanoid beings why would they develop butter, wine, tea, beer, cotton cloth, etc.? This is another inconsistency that intrudes on the story (especially if you read the appendix before the story so that you understand how the universe is supposed to work before getting into the novel).

I don't usually read clean romances, but this one had me at hello. Set in the time of The Titanic, it feels like the antithesis of the movie "Titanic." At certain points, I could even hear the soundtrack from the movie in my mind. I will definitely see what else this author has to offer.

The characters came alive as they worked their jobs in the industrial age and as they spoke so politely and dignified as was expected at the time. One couple gracefully meets and falls in love as the their boarding the Titanic awaits.
