Sheriff Jason Calvin and the people of New Eden have managed to move on from a brutal war with a neighboring town. In the aftermath, a new government rose from the ashes to bring peace to the Tennessee Valley. Unfortunately, there always seems to be people who have no interest in peace as a group of ruthless thugs with a personal axe to grind kills one of Jason's closest friends. Now, the sheriff has to deal with meddlesome bureaucrats, a conniving rival, and old enemies in an effort to find the men responsible, plus the small army protecting them, and bring them to justice. Bad Moon on the Rise continues the story first told in After the Blast and continued in Bloody Eden.

By Pat Patterson Bad Moon on the Rise (Soldiers of New Eden Book 3)by Tom Knighton, Flint River Publishing. Kindle Edition.I obtained this book through the Kindle Unlimited program. Even though I am paying for the privilege of reading this book, I do not show up as a Verified Purchaser. The premise of this series is that a limited exchange of nuclear weapons is possible, but even so, it would destroy the fabric of civilization. This gives us a much greater playground to explore; we don't have to spend a lot of time reading about radiation-poisoned wastelands.Even more significantly, we don't have to spend ANY time beating our breasts about the evil government, either ours or theirs. These are stories about personal accountability, corporate responsibility in a small setting, but international relationships can go pound sand. Face it: there's not a lot we can do about that, anyway. I'm not trying to suggest that there is no place for a book about those macro issues; Michael Z. Williamson and Tom Kratman write some great stories about evil governments in space. However, even in those books, is is the individual stories that set them apart."Bad Moon On The Rise" does a good job of pointing out that some people won't stop being stupid, even after a nuclear war. Some of the stupidity shows up in petty quibbling about organizational matters, some in the failure of a militia unit to develop an identity, and some in the attitudes of two bit tyrants who would rather be king of dirt than a contributing member of a society with clean water, public health, and a reasonable expectation of waking up alive in the morning.Sheriff Jason and his friends continue to rebuild their lives in the community of New Eden. Standing in the background, most of the time offstage, is the outlaw manipulator, Declan; more intrusive is his psychopathic bully boy, Walker. Walker is the kind of guy who can't be counted on to do anything except destroy himself, after chewing up the newly installed carpet, stealing the newspaper boy's bicycle, and burning down leper Colonies. There is a special treat in store for people who have a more-than-passing knowledge of the most horrid books on Amazon. However, the author's treatment of the bumbling character Norman only communicates perhaps 3% of the truth. This is, I believe, a good thing for the author's mental health. I can't imagine that getting inside that particular character's head, even though it were done for the purity of the story, could possibly have a good outcome.I have enjoyed reading the books in this series, but the earlier books, while telling a good story, were often clunky in their execution. It was never enough to take me out of the story, but much as mating fireflies in the cockpit of an A-10 Warthog on an attack run produces a certain level of dissonance, the editing glitches hindered complete enjoyment. The author's technical expertise has clearly advanced, and if there were any grammatical or editing problems, I don't recall them.Final note: what a great cover!

By Phil and Deb L-S I'm finding the unrelenting grimness of the post-apocalyptic landscape to be somewhat of a turn-off after three books. That said, Tom writes well. Recommended for people who like survivor and post-apoc narratives. Good action, and the hero isn't at all a powered-up character (no "Mary Sue" or "Marty Steve" or whatever you call it). Tom isn't afraid to enhance the realism by killing off characters we like; points for this, as we all know authors who can't bear to kill off any of the Good Guys.

Nicely paced, it's got enough plot twists to keep the reader going and his weapons play and physical descriptions are believable as is the post apocalyptic world he portrays. The interactions between the main protagonists are well done, and show the depths of the characters well. He doesn't do a 'perfect hero'TM making the book much more enjoyable to my way of thinking.
