Review "And while the disengagement itself is a compelling story, and the landscapes of Gush Katif, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv are settings rich with personality, Arfa goes further, setting music - the composition, study, remuneration and enjoyment of it - as a barometer for measuring the evolution and redemption of the characters." - Laura Kelly, Jerusalem Post "The novel is beautifully written." - Rick Richman, Jewish Current Issues"Arfa executes the difficult balance between sociopolitical commentary and human development artfully, avoiding veering into caricature with grace and humor....Why can't we have more novels like this?" - Tova Dvorin, Israel National News"An unconventional novel." - Yedioth Aharonot, Israel's leading dailyArfa's words of great power sweep you into a deep, emotional connection with Sarah Dakar. While it's a political novel, anyone can relate to the plot, the pain, the loss, and the insights along the way, to the price each character pays, and to the human story told with great sensitivity. - Shira Goldberg, Prestige Magazine (Israel)

By Susan "The Settler" is thoroughly engaging, entertaining and enlightening with memorable characters that grow and transform as you discover their differing and evolving views and values. Author Orit Arfa transported me through recent and future times in Israel via compelling characters and plot twists as well as rich cultural details. Arfa opened my eyes in fresh new ways to better understand and appreciate the kinds of challenges that Israelis face--all while telling a great story driven by passion and a firsthand knowledge of Israeli life.

I found myself so pulled into the lives of these characters that I could not put the book down! The author does such an incredible job of describing these characters that you really can envision exactly who they are and what they look like. Can't wait for her second book!

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Not the Norm By Marc Pro Many times we are fed just one type of story regarding painful experiences. We rarely get to read about the results that may shake up perceptions and show just how diverse and human people can be. I feel this novel does exactly that regarding one of Israel's most painful concessions in the search for a peaceful solution. The writer does not follow the norm and forces us to open our eyes to others, ourselves and an entire group of people hurt and torn from their homes. Whereas this book may rub many the wrong way, it will surely rub many the right way.

A shocking betrayal . . . Riches. Power. An ancient heritage of pride. The Earl of Druridge wanted only for an heir. So when he learned that his wife was carrying another man’s child, he was filled with a thirst for vengeance. But he wasn’t the one who caused Katherine’s death. Or was he? Rachel McTavish, the beautiful daughter of a coal miner, knows something about the fire that took Lady Katherine’s life. In secret, the strong-willed girl strikes a bargain with the desperate earl: he must send his physician to help her dying mother or he may go to the scaffold ― and the devil. The earl agrees, but Rachel is still unsure that her revelation will be enough to save him when so many wish him dead. Passionately drawn to the nobleman, despite all the doubt and mystery that shroud him, Rachel wonders if he can really be a murderer. Or if he is the only man who will ever own her heart . . .

Weaver I'm not a stickler for total historical accuracy because I can't pretend to know more about England in the 1800s than what I read in (primarily) romance novels that take place during the era. However, I do expect an author to at least write within the realm of the believable. Unfortunately, I was unable to suspend disbelief as I read much of this novel. In this book, the hero is the Earl of Druridge, whose wife died after a suspicious fire in his home. He is bent on clearing his name, though he himself isn't exactly sure of his own innocence. Rachel MacTavish is the daughter of a deceased miner who worked for Druridge. He mistakenly believes that she holds the truth about the fire. This story might have worked if there were some sexual tension that led up to the two falling for each other. Instead, Rachel is practically raped by the earl (she is semi-conscious through it, and the author would have us believe she enjoys the experience, but I wasn't sold). What follows is a series of events that simply breaks all the boundaries and rules of the time period. The earl doesn't just move Rachel into his home; he moves her into his dead wife's suite, dresses her in his dead wife's clothes, and gives her the run of his household. I suppose he's supposed to be a tortured hero, but he just came across as weak, ineffectual, and clueless at times. So much so that I don't think the mystery of the fire is much of mystery to readers for very long.If you expect historical accuracy in your historicals, and if you expect romance in your romances, I'd pass on this one.

Morris I'm currently going through a phase where historical romances seem to leap right into my hands to be read. Unfortunately, this one may have affected my taste for the genre. So little was good here among the just-okay and downright-bad elements of the novel that it was painful for me to even finish it.The good that does exist: I really do enjoy Novak's writing, at least as far as it pertains with syntax and description (her characters leave a little more to be desired.) Her writing shows talent and professionalism. But that is it. I get this is a romance and there is a certain level of "the usual" in the genre, but this story was predictable, bland, and unoriginal with no saving graces. Obviously, I expect the two protagonists to fall in love, but the accompanying mystery could have stood to be a little more mysterious. As it stood, it was your basic mystery thriller, decent at best. The characters were also bland, as were their interactions. The discovery of the romance barely existed here and was glossed over to force through the longings and lust for one another and some badly described sex scenes.I suppose all of this could have been enough to warrant three stars for a decent attempt, except for one thing that may have made me cold to the rest of the novel: The first sexual encounter is what nowadays would be labeled date rape. Hard to take in and hard to forgive.I'm sorry, but this novel just left a bad taste in my mouth. So little of it was good, and just enough of it was terrible.

32 of 35 people found the following review helpful. good Romance AND Mystery novel By book junkie Rachel McTavish is a small town bookseller's daughter, and ordinarily would not come into contact with the nobility, but Rachel has something the Earl of Druridge desperately needs, information about his wife's death. Now Rachel's mother is desperately ill, and the earl offer's her a trade- information for a doctor's care for her mother.I thought this was going to be a romance novel with a little mystery thrown in, but the mystery and romance parts came out more or less equally weighted. Rachel isn't the typical heroine, and this isn't a typical setting, and some of the other characters were unusual as well. Rachel's father and brother were both miners in the Earl's coal mine, and the Earl is generally hated for low pay and dangerous work conditions. When Rachel begins to associate with the earl, the town turns on her. She begins to realize that there is something going on at the mine, and someone doesn't want her to talk to the Earl about it. But if the Earl cannot prove that his wife was murdered by someone else, he will have to marry a powerful lord's daughter to keep his wife's family from having him prosecuted and possibly hanged. While the end was fairly predictable (it is a romance novel after all) the plot was very well written, and there were plenty of twists and turns along the way. There were exciting fight and rescue scenes and plenty of suspense. Some of the villains turned out not to be quite so bad, and some of the "nice" characters proved fickle in the end. This is not a typical romance but it was a good read.

Review "Fans of Celtic stories won't want to miss this one" ~Joanne Rock, Three-time RITA nominee"When fantasy becomes reality, the battle of good versus evil could be epic! Ms Revezzo has done her homework, rounded up her characters and set the stage for some great reading from start to finish! All you add is your own imagination." ~Dii, Tome Tender I love Celtic mythology (although I am no expert) and thought the legend of the Harshad Wars and warriors was well-created... and I was satisfied by the end... I'd recommend this to romance fans who like a strong fantasy story with lots of historical connections, and obviously fans of Celtic myth. A great read! ~Kelly, Friday Night Romance

But that account has been lost.Though the present day steward, Stacy, has heard the tales her whole life, she now has the good fortune to inherit her ancestors' personal memories ... and the Medieval diary, to learn the extent of their power, before time runs out.

Celtic Delight By Wordwonk In this contemporary romance, the heroine Stacy discovers she's a focal point in the constant battle between good and evil. She doesn't have to go it alone, however, because she's been sent a guardian--who just happens to be a luscious hunk with a wicked blade. The author's love for Celtic history and mythology shines in this story, and I thought she incorporated clever updates to ancient themes. In much of the book, Stacy is still trying to get her mind around why and how these strange things are happening, and her relationship with the guardian Aaron is laced with chemistry and passion. I read Passion's Sacred Dance over several nights, and always looked forward to picking up my Kindle.

First in an exciting new series By Amazon Customer Set amidst ancient battles and family legends, Passion's Sacred Dance is a fast-paced tale of warriors and lovers, where visions from the past hold the key to saving the future. Passion sizzles off the page, as the heat of desire binds the lovers together both on and off the battlefield. I thoroughly enjoyed Passion's Sacred Dance and look forward to reading the next book in the Harshad Wars series.

The concept of the story is very interesting and there was enough action and steaminess, I just felt a bit confused and thought it lacked info.Stacy is the owner of the Historic Center but is in debt and needs to figure out a way to keep her center, Aaron is a Harshad Warrior and Stacy's guardian. There is an impending war between the Harshads and the evil they have been fighting against for centuries, and Stacy is right in the middle of it. Tho she has had some sort of idea since it is part of her family history.Like I said, the storyline is interesting, Ancient warriors fighting against evil to prevent humankind from suffering an Apocalypse, but as the story went along not all of the background was known and more information was promised to be told but never mentioned. It was a good read, it kept my attention even though I was a bit confused. I'll most likely read the next one too, I'd like to see what happens next and if there is more information given.

Warrior’s Revenge Sometimes the only way to love ― and redemption ― is to make a deal with the devil. After the death of her parents, Lady Aurora de Marquise is left with no illusions. Stripped of her birthright and betrayed by her uncle, escape is her only option. With her life on the line, she narrowly avoids another murder attempt ― only to run headlong into Lord Brigham de Mornay, a man most consider a monster. With her uncle’s henchmen nipping at her heels, Aurora knows better than to trust a stranger ― especially one as compelling as Brigham. Well-honed instincts urge her to flee before his abundant charm takes a nasty turn into aggression ― and she ends up neck deep in trouble. Wary, but undeniably drawn to him, Aurora pits her will against his, challenging his authority every chance she gets. But when her uncle manages to track her, she is left with the ultimate choice ― surrender to the man who now holds her heart or risk it all trying to escape again. Gritty and fast-paced, Warrior’s Revenge brings to life the magnificence of the medieval age while exploring the meaning of honor, duty, and nature of true love.

66 of 74 people found the following review helpful. Oh. My. Goodness. By KateM I pride myself on always finishing a book. In my LIFE I have only not finished two books. This is going to be the third.*spoilers may follow*So we start with our heroine with her stereotypical two dimensional Marquis de Sade style uncle. She's his victim so she runs away. This is not bad. Then we meet our bitter, once-bitten-twice-shy hero. Also not bad. Then the suck starts. The book is ridiculously overwritten. Without exaggerating, there are PARAGRAPHS between one footstep and the next. An entire chapter goes by between the start of the aisle and the end of it. I have skipped pages and chapters with no effect - because nothing is happening. All the characters do is stand around and think. Instead of being privy to dialogue between characters that might enhance the plot (assuming there is a plot, I don't see one), we get to read about what the character thinks about what is being said. The heroine is whiny and a victim. Her initial act of running away was the only gumption she has, because the rest of the time she cries, and is afraid, and cries, and withholds sex because she is angry. She needs to be rescued after doing stupid things and has no control over her apparently raging hormones. She is a passive aggressive child marketed as a strong female lead. She is constantly calling the hero a brute, yet I have yet to see one brutish act by him. Once again in a medieval romance, we are told about this horrible, awful man who turns out to be an overly indulgent nice guy. He, too, has no control over his sex drive and falls madly in love with a woman who assaulted him and stole his horse. Within days. Really? What happened to the sour, bitter, "I don't ever want to get married again" man that I was introduced to in the second chapter? So anyone who has read any of my other reviews knows how much I hate anachronisms. This book is full of them.1. Stuck reading stilted olde timey language 'twas and 'twill and 'tis. Yet some characters speak with a cockney accent. Really? And modern colloquialisms such as "track record" (can't have a track record without horse racing - not a sport yet), and "he was screwed", among many others. And I'm pretty sure even Mel Brooks wouldn't use " 'twouldn't ".2. Clydesdales weren't around until the 1800s.3. Velvet was reserved for the ultra-wealthy, read "royal family". Her husband is a Baron, which is high up but not as high as a Duke, and she's Lady of... which isn't really a rank at all. Certainly not of the rank to be having velvet pillows, and velvet curtains, and velvet for every dress she wears.4. Even if her token gay friend is gay, he's not going to be her lady's maid. Gender roles, gender roles, gender roles. They may not exist now, but they sure as **** existed in this period of time5. Rugs were extremely expensive and were not placed on the floor, they were generally used to cover tables. Rushes were put on the floor.6. Sex hasn't always been an extra super-taboo subject. The attitude in this book towards sex reflects more of the regency period than the medieval, and I'm sorry, but it wouldn't matter if the Pope himself walked in on the hero and heroine getting nasty, there is not going to be a shotgun (or crossbow) wedding mandated by the church. It was so, so very common for men to take mistresses and people to have relations outside of marriage.7. Horse people will get this, and I am a horse person. When a 1500+ pound animal is freaking out, talking quietly to it and patting it on the nose isn't going to accomplish anything. SO many examples of this BS in this novel. So I mentioned the token gay friend. He's a token gay friend. Completely gratuitous and serves zero purpose in the book other than to cause stereotypical "I'm gay and hitting on people who aren't gay who then beat me up" conflict. I am not super familiar with the subject in this time period, but I have reason to doubt that this was less of an issue then than it is today. So I had to give this at least one star, and I suppose negative stars would be too harsh. Despite the almost complete lack of typographical mistakes, this book is just unreadable. According to the progress meter on my Kindle, I have skipped 10% of the book (right around the middle) and haven't missed anything. I skip page after page, and sometimes entire chapters, of nothing but the hero or heroine thinking, usually about their counterpart. The novel starts out with plot, which then fizzles into nothing. If I managed to get to the end, I am assuming that the two-dimensional villain is going to make a last minute appearance and the hero is going to save the whining, sobbing, helpless heroine and they will then live happily ever after.

Thoroughly enjoyable By Sandy Milan It seems that this is a book by a new author and I actually downloaded it with whispersync, so I both read and listened to it. I had some driving to do and wanted to pass the time. Both the book and the audio version are very good. I see that it was originally released as a serial and I'm glad that I missed that. I loathe serial books and wish that this wasn't the latest trend with publishers. Anyway having said that this book was great, not perfect but way up there. The elements of humour had me smiling often.+++Spoilers+++I loved the fact that the H and h were so physically attracted to each other in a very believable way. I loved the fact that the author was true to the times and although they pushed the limits, they only consummated their relationship after marrying. I really loved the way they found love and again it was credible. Though united because of their chemistry, they fall in love more slowly. Everything I look for in a romance and the bonus on top is that it is set in medieval times. I look forward to reading more from this author.

24 of 26 people found the following review helpful. a fun piece full of adventure By Amazon Reader I am a huge fan of Coreene Callahan's dragon books. So I thought I'd give this time piece a go. I knew going in it wouldn't be full of hot sex but it was full of romance, fun, drama, a wonderful heroine and a hot alpha hero. Aurora's trapped in her own home that was stolen by her uncle upon her parents' death. She escapes and runs into Brigham. She steals his horse and the adventures unfolds from there.

After I read the first ten pages, I thought it was going to be pretty boring. I mean, how interesting is a book about getting in a quarrel about tripping over someone's feet. I wondered how Henty managed to write a book that goes on for 360 pages with really small print that kept going on like that. Then, I decided to read a little more. The second chapter wasn't quite as bad so I read a little more, until it got so interesting I didn't want to stop!G. A. Henty wrote a scores of historical fiction stories about the Middle Ages and other time periods, including Ancient Civilizations, the Renaissance, and even journeys to the new world. At the turn of the century, he was a renowned author, especially among high-school boys. I am surprised that he has been almost completely forgotten today. Henty is a marvelous author who wrote exciting, historically accurate, action-adventure books.Wulf is a Saxon thane who is under the command of Earl Harold of Wessex. He is always by Harold's side, ready for adventure with his right-hand man Osgod and his best friend Beorn. They fight the Welsh, the Bretons, Vikings, and finally the Normans under the command of the Duke of Normandy, a.k.a. William the Conqueror at the final conflict at Hastings. If all Henty's books are like this one, I'm going to ask my parents to order the whole set! The only downside to investing your time in this book is the beginning is a little slow. But after that, It's Great! I can't wait to read the next one.

I find it quite possible Louis L'Amour was familliar with this writer's work By thomas the straightforward manor and general tone of writing is a style I enjoy. it is an easy read, and the author was a master at bringing a section of history and a historical figure to life. after a wikipedia search on the historic figure the main characters revolve around I found many of the historic anecdotes and snippets of info historians argue over have been fleshed out well and good by the author.

This is my favorite of his book. I love the time period (Norman conquest) and the actual historical details. I also like that he does not ignore fashion of the day and spends some time describing what people wore in pretty good detail (maybe 12 year old boys don't like this?). Worth every penny!

Henty.First of all, historical fiction is probably my favorite genre of writing. So far I have not found anyone like G.A. Henty with the ability to tell a tale like he does. I have read as many of his books that I could get my hands on. They are just plain hard to put down once you get started; that is if you are a fan of historical fiction like I am. Henty's stories typically revolve around a central "boy hero" character during a pivotal period in history. This "boy hero" character usually ends of accomplishing some pretty amazing (though not unrealistic) feats by the end of the story.Henty lived during Queen Victoria's reign and literary critic Kathryn Castle put it well when she said: "Henty...exemplified the ethos of the new imperialism, and glorified in its successes". He was a very strong supporter of the British Empire all of his life. Henty had some pretty amazing adventures of his own during his life, such as the Crimean War, the opening of the Suez Canal and the California gold fields to name a few. "With Wolfe in Canada" is a story that is centered on the French and Indian War of 1754 - 1763. This war was really the American theater of the Seven Years War. The "Wolfe" in the title refers to General James Wolfe the commander of the British expedition to take Quebec. The tale begins where "James Walsham", the main character, began his life; in Sidmouth, England, born the son of a country doctor who died when he was quite young. It tells of his growing up here in some detail, and of the surroundings that made up the life of a common fisherman in that day.James's mother, a school teacher, had wanted him to follow the profession of his father and become a doctor, but this was not meant to be. As James had deep love for the sea ever since he was a young boy, he naturally was around fisherman and the sea in general quite a bit. This may seem rather obvious as Sidmouth is a coastal town.It turns out that he becomes involved in a smuggling operation and is pressed into the service a British warship. Don't take this as a clue that James had turned "sour". In those days smuggling in that region of the world was not really looked on as major crime by the locals, and most of the people were in sympathy with the smugglers. The British government certainly did not think so and the law was strictly enforced by the "revenue men". James time of service on the warship is what brought him to America, and on his discharge there he decides to join General Edward Braddock in an expedition against the French. The main bulk of the story involves his adventures during his time as a scout in America, but also involves a fascinating tie with circumstances back home in Sidmouth involving some competition for his "girl" Aggie, someone that he had grown up with. Also woven throughout is the treachery of a Richard, the nephew of a friend of James's back home who was jealous of James accomplishments.Overall, "With Wolfe in Canada" is a very compelling novel that is very historically accurate and provides the perfect balance between a fictional story and the true events of the French and Indian war. It is well worth your read.G.A Henty, Blackie & Son, 1886Preston/Speed Publications, 1999[Wikipedia.org/G.A. Henty]

Its almost as big as a regular piece of paper. It looks like a text book. But the text is ALL the way across the page. Its not even divided into columns! The chapters are not separated on pages either.I would say this is the worst printed book I have ever seen. Total formatting fail. Buy a different copy. The content is phenomenal, my only qualm is with this particular printing.

A Great Panorama of American/Canadian Colonial History By Janice Rapier I loved the way Henty put together the history of the French and Indian War, from George Washington's foray with General Braddock against the French and Indians in Pennsylvania to the British capture of Quebec and the surrender of Canada to the British, this book is filled with excitement.

Veronica is a young girl from a chaotic family who falls in love with handsome and yet awkward Nathanial who lives out his dream of becoming a fisherman. Veronica and Nathanial hope to have a large family with lots of children but struggle for years to have a baby. The young couple decide to adopt three orphaned children. Tragedy strikes and Veronica becomes a young widow struggling to raise three children alone. She meets and falls for handsome and charmingly deceptive Shakran and soon finds herself pregnant with a difficult decision to make. Her decision destroys her health and rips her family apart. Veronica suffers for 12 years before coming to Jesus she not only finds healing and the forgiveness she is certain she doesn't deserve she also sees her family restored. Veronica finds herself filled with gratitude for all that Jesus has done for her. She closely follows Jesus and walks along side him, proclaiming her love for him all the way to the cross and is present at the open tomb on the morning of the resurrection. Veronica is an emotional and though provoking story. It has a strong gospel message and ties together many great New Testament stories to help illustrate Jesus' love for humanity and his healing power. Veronica has some themes that are considered modestly edgy, making it a story that today's women can relate to. My editor called this story expertly written and affected her more deeply emotionally than any book that she had read in years. See if you agree.

Captivating, Scriptural and Wonderfully Written By CBM Book Reviews Veronica: The Woman with the Issue of Blood by Lucinda Weeks is a captivating scriptural work of fiction that encompasses all the makings of a great novel. Relevant today, the issues, the emotions and reality of Veronica’s trials, make this an excellent read as the author covers a variety of issues: sin, abortion, forgiveness and healing from a Biblical perspective from Scripture.Filled with romance, adventure, perseverance, faith, forgiveness and healing, the author gives a fictional account of the story of the woman with the issue of blood told in the New Testament. Well-written, the author will keep you glued to the book as the main character, Veronica (the woman with the issue of blood) and her husband desire to have children. Unrelated to the issue of blood, as readers will find out, they are unable to have any children of their own. Eventually they adopt three children. Tragedy strikes and Veronica is abruptly widowed, left to care for her three children alone. She remarries, but marries a man who is deceiving her. As an unwanted pregnancy comes, she decided to end the pregnancy, but is left with an issue of blood that plagues her life for twelve years. The story unfolds as a woman who once had it all, loses everything, even custody of her children. In her despair, she risks it all to touch the hem of the garment of the One who has been spoken about – Jesus. She comes to find that not only is she completely healed, but she is also forgiven of All her sins – including the crude abortion that she didn’t think she could be forgiven for. This is an amazing story of redemption with all the aspects of a romance novel immersed within ~ love, betrayal, overcoming immense guilt, fear and shame and the redeeming love Christ has to offer create a wonderful, biblically entertaining read.

By Margaret Lukasik Great Historical Fiction and the Bible are once again combined in the new story Veronica: The Woman With The Issue Of Blood, Volume II of The Women Who Met Jesus Series by Christian author Lucinda Weeks. Just imagine following Jesus and His disciples moving through vast crowds of joyful people praising and thanking God as He forgives all sin, heals the sick, lays hands on the maimed to be whole and shares the Word of God to enthralled audiences. Then all of a sudden Jesus stops, realizing the virtue is gone from Him and a woman falls down at His feet! The author so vividly recreates that electric moment when the woman with the issue of blood reaches out and touches Jesus' garment in desperation and in faith to be healed! It felt as if I was right there in the presence of Jesus as a witness to this spectacular event! This exciting story reflects the creative imagination of the author who tells the story of what may have happened to the woman with the issue of blood from Luke 8:43-48 to cause her endless condition and her need to be healed. The story is shared with great sensitivity and compassion as the main character, Veronica, transitions from the life of her dreams to a vulnerable woman who finds herself in one desperate situation after another, including the shocking loss of her husband and then her children. With each new disappointment of her life and each new loss she suffers I couldn't help but participate in the story to determine what I would have done or what Veronica should do next. I felt her joy, I agonized with her pain and I cried with her during her greatest moments of triumph! Lucinda’s writing is so captivating and powerful that this exciting time in Biblical history comes alive with traditions, customs, celebrations and colorful clothing! From chapter to chapter I felt myself back in time all the way to the end of the story when Jesus takes His place on the cross and is ready to shed His blood for all mankind. I recommend this story for all who wish to be entertained while at the same time get a clear understanding of Jesus’ forgiveness of even the worst of sins and His mercy and compassion for all who are willing to deny themselves to follow Him.

By Pat Patterson Bad Moon on the Rise (Soldiers of New Eden Book 3)by Tom Knighton, Flint River Publishing. Kindle Edition.I obtained this book through the Kindle Unlimited program. Even though I am paying for the privilege of reading this book, I do not show up as a Verified Purchaser. The premise of this series is that a limited exchange of nuclear weapons is possible, but even so, it would destroy the fabric of civilization. This gives us a much greater playground to explore; we don't have to spend a lot of time reading about radiation-poisoned wastelands.Even more significantly, we don't have to spend ANY time beating our breasts about the evil government, either ours or theirs. These are stories about personal accountability, corporate responsibility in a small setting, but international relationships can go pound sand. Face it: there's not a lot we can do about that, anyway. I'm not trying to suggest that there is no place for a book about those macro issues; Michael Z. Williamson and Tom Kratman write some great stories about evil governments in space. However, even in those books, is is the individual stories that set them apart."Bad Moon On The Rise" does a good job of pointing out that some people won't stop being stupid, even after a nuclear war. Some of the stupidity shows up in petty quibbling about organizational matters, some in the failure of a militia unit to develop an identity, and some in the attitudes of two bit tyrants who would rather be king of dirt than a contributing member of a society with clean water, public health, and a reasonable expectation of waking up alive in the morning.Sheriff Jason and his friends continue to rebuild their lives in the community of New Eden. Standing in the background, most of the time offstage, is the outlaw manipulator, Declan; more intrusive is his psychopathic bully boy, Walker. Walker is the kind of guy who can't be counted on to do anything except destroy himself, after chewing up the newly installed carpet, stealing the newspaper boy's bicycle, and burning down leper Colonies. There is a special treat in store for people who have a more-than-passing knowledge of the most horrid books on Amazon. However, the author's treatment of the bumbling character Norman only communicates perhaps 3% of the truth. This is, I believe, a good thing for the author's mental health. I can't imagine that getting inside that particular character's head, even though it were done for the purity of the story, could possibly have a good outcome.I have enjoyed reading the books in this series, but the earlier books, while telling a good story, were often clunky in their execution. It was never enough to take me out of the story, but much as mating fireflies in the cockpit of an A-10 Warthog on an attack run produces a certain level of dissonance, the editing glitches hindered complete enjoyment. The author's technical expertise has clearly advanced, and if there were any grammatical or editing problems, I don't recall them.Final note: what a great cover!

By Phil and Deb L-S I'm finding the unrelenting grimness of the post-apocalyptic landscape to be somewhat of a turn-off after three books. That said, Tom writes well. Recommended for people who like survivor and post-apoc narratives. Good action, and the hero isn't at all a powered-up character (no "Mary Sue" or "Marty Steve" or whatever you call it). Tom isn't afraid to enhance the realism by killing off characters we like; points for this, as we all know authors who can't bear to kill off any of the Good Guys.

Nicely paced, it's got enough plot twists to keep the reader going and his weapons play and physical descriptions are believable as is the post apocalyptic world he portrays. The interactions between the main protagonists are well done, and show the depths of the characters well. He doesn't do a 'perfect hero'TM making the book much more enjoyable to my way of thinking.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. some good, some not so good and as he goes ... By Live Laugh & Love Books Review by Hailey:So I want to start off by stating how unimpressed I expected to be with this book and how pleasantly surprised I was to find I was very wrong in my assumption. The Book of a Few is set up in the format of a journal compilation of several different characters’ personal accounts of “The Black Era,” considered to be, “One of humanity’s darkest and most amoral times.” I normally have a very hard time reading my way through books in journal format, especially when written from the perspective of many persons, however, Mr. Rodgers managed to make the transition from character to character seemingly flawless. The majority of the storyline follows a character by the name of Chester who is in search of his missing girlfriend. Along the journey he encounters several new people, some good, some not so good and as he goes through the process of determining who is which, he finds himself questioning his own moral compass in this hell hole of a life in the post-apocalyptic world.I would suggest this book just about anyone….well maybe not young children or elders, but everyone in between. If you enjoy action, adventure, drama, humor, and/or zombies, then this book has something for you! I can honestly say it’s worth the read and I intend to read it again. A round of applause to the author, Mr. Austen Rodgers, for making me a fan! I’ll be keeping an eye out for more of his work!*I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for a fair and honest review.*

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. great read. By william byrne throughout the annals of history, mankind has searched for a book, the book, that will live on through the ages as a guide by which we lead our lives. some believe the bible, some the quran, but not me. no, no. not me. you see, I've found the book that will lead me and my people into the promised land. and that book, is the book of a few.packed with action and emotion, this book has everything I want. I'm a big fan of zombies so that was my immediate attraction to this book, but I believe even if you aren't a zombie fan, you can still get a lot out of this one. its not about slaying the undead in tons of gruesome ways, it's really the story about a man trying to survive against all odds, and his personal struggles with the ever-changing world around him.the author uses a sort of gimmicky device in telling the story through journaling by the main character, but he nails it. it's done very well and I think only helps to reveal the changes in the main character's thoughts, feeling and gives us insight into the actions he takes. it's not a super long book like harry potter, but it's also not too short. I think the pacing is great so it reads fast but accomplishes what it needs to and gets you out of there before anyone loses interest.I'm looking forward to reading this author's next work, whether it be a follow up to the book of a few or something else. I just hope he is able to really capture the psyche of the human condition as well as he did this time.

Shamey If your looking for a good zombie story this is your book!It captures the essential aspects of the zombie apocalypse while providing a fresh take on on its nature and origins. The journal format is also an interesting way to present the narrative. Pacing and readability were great through most of the book, although it did become a bit disjointed and harder to follow towards the end. It could be a matter of personal preference but I would have found it to be more enjoyable if the pacing was consistent.Overall I thought it was a great debut novel from an indie author and a highly creative take on a heavily covered theme.

It is packed with combat action and the roles of Jessica and Sophie make this book appealing to a wider audience. It has a great balance of action, political argument, intelligent plotting and side-switching. We see the views from the top, the president, and all the way through the generals, the soldiers, the Bible-bashers, the news reporters, the protesters and the innocent bystanders. It's a massive story and I don't mean word count. It's exceptionally well written with a fast pace which fits with the action scenes perfectly.I could almost believe that the author had travelled forward in time and came back with an account of what was going on.Personally I would have liked more dialogue, but as it's an action based story with a lot of noise, had it been a film, I understand why it is written the way it is.A very clever book and I learned a lot from it.

Richard Peters, the author, sent me a copy of this book to read and review and asked for feedback, whether it was negative or positive. As you read through, I hope that my words will be helpful. As someone who’s writing his first novel, I hope that others will be kind enough to help me like this when the time comes.I’m crazy about the post-apocalypse and dis-utopian society. The idea of a second civil war gripping the United States of America easily fits into both of those quite easy. I had finished another book the day before I received a copy of Power Games and luckily I had a free rainy Saturday, so I read. The story starts with bang, literally. Quickly after the opening scene the situation spirals out of control, the balance of power teeter on a knives edge. Before you can almost blink, a high-stakes game of chicken involving Congress, individual States, and the President develops.I’ll be real honest; I didn’t really like characters in this story. That’s not a bad thing unless I was supposed to like particular ones. I couldn’t even root for anyone, I felt like they were all very easy to hate. This especially rang true for any of the politicians and most of the press. If you like a lot of detailed battle scenes, this is the book for you. Each of the firefights and full-fledged battles were laced with military jargon, tactical detail, and a grisly imagery. The biggest issues I had were pretty simple. I got lost here and there as the story progressed. The scenes pick up speed the further I progressed through the book. Essentially the story and characters started to blur together. I hope in further installments that the characters develop more and that I get to know them a little better.Long story short is that I liked the story and wish I could give it a three and a half stars instead of three. I look forward to seeing where it goes, since the ending defiantly leaves things unresolved and the horizon open.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Well thought out and executed action thriller! By David M. Ybaben Let's start off with overall feeling. I liked it a lot.The story is woven around a series of events that I can actually see happening all to well. The author illustrates the power of the media and in particular the misconceptions that are sprung from news agencies that are scrambling to be the "First". In doing so of course, the information is not always vetted and it is often just one side of the story. This happens quite a bit as we all know. However, Mr. Peters takes it to the extreme with a what-if scenario that is all too plausible in my eyes.(If we were in the state of unrest the nation is set at in the book that is.)This is mixed with again the all too familiar stance of greedy, ignorant, politicians. Add in the very real cultural and socio-economic divides of our nation. You take these and combine them to the max and you get the premise of this book. A modern civil war here in America. I won't get into spoilers but rest assured it is chock full of action and political maneuvering and intrigue. When it came to assigning the number of stars, I always try to think of the most glaring cons. And after quite a bit of thought I decided to give it four stars. Why not five? I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be waiting for the next one to come out with anticipation.I give it four because of the way the author disseminates a lot of the valuable information needed to set the tone for the overall backstory. And there is a quite a bit of it. He elects to explain this information in a lecture type of dissemination. You are being told what is going on directly. "A is happening here in Anytown, Anystate because B occurred elsewhere" kinda stuff.I normally don't mind this at all, even prefer it most times, but the amount of it can be a little offsetting and remind you of a textbook at times. (I love textbooks btw). With that being said I would have liked a little breakup in that style. I have seen other authors do so through a mixture of that, abstract news articles, very short lived characters that are introduced just to illustrate a certain event, etc. This is something that I noticed. It doesn't take away from the story at all and is just a style preference to most.Highly recommend to all!

In this concise introduction, Chad Kautzer demonstrates the shared emancipatory goals and methods of several radical philosophies, from Marxism and feminism to critical race and queer theory. Radical Philosophy examines the relations of theory and practice, knowledge and power, as well as the function of law in creating extralegal forms of domination. Through a critical engagement with the history of philosophy, Kautzer reconstructs important counter-traditions of historical, dialectical, and reflexive forms of critique relevant to contemporary social struggles. The result is an innovative, systematic guide to radical theory and critical resistance.

Review

"I recommend this book in three respects: as an introductory text for philosophy undergraduates; as an example of self-critique for continental philosophers; and as a window into what may be a different tradition altogether for sundry radical philosophers, as well as mainstream heirs of Thales."― Naomi Zack, Radical Philosophy Review

"Kautzer’s two-pronged thesis about the impetus for and basic purpose of radical philosophy is appealing, even energizing."― Sarah Drews Lucas, Contemporary Political Theory

"Turn the university upside down! Turn philosophy upside down. Think against the world of destruction and oppression and cultivate resistance. This book is a terrific place to start, just what we need."― John Holloway, Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Mexico, author of Change the World without Taking Power and Crack Capitalism

"Radical Philosophy: An Introduction constitutes a major scholarly contribution without rival. The analysis of domination through the lenses of race, class, gender, and sexuality in the context of a rich historical engagement is a hallmark of Kautzer’s scholarship. The book concludes with a novel conception of the function of whiteness in extra-legal structures of racism. The elegant style renders the book highly readable, which is an important benefit of a text that has much to offer scholars, students, and activists."― Cynthia Willett, Emory University, author of Interspecies Ethics and Irony in the Age of Empire

"Ever since Socrates, philosophy has been a dangerous endeavor, but it loses its critical edge if practiced only as an academic exercise. Chad Kautzer renews philosophy’s original stance by making a forceful case for an interventionist thinking informed by contemporary social struggles. This book is an indispensable tool for all who want not only to interpret the world but to change it."― Daniel Loick, Goethe Universität, Frankfurt am Main, author of The Critique of Sovereignty (Kritik der Souveränität)

"Although some may see in 'radical philosophy' an incongruous juxtaposition of terms, Kautzer demonstrates that philosophical practice need not be a detached and contemplative exercise... this accessible book is useful as an introduction to radical political philosophy. Summing Up: Recommended."― J. A. Gauthier, University of Portland, CHOICE Reviews

This is the rarest kind of philosophy book By Evan Moskowitz If you have any kind of background in philosophy or critical/social theory, you might be tempted to skip over a book with "introduction" in its title. I can't stress enough what a mistake that would be. Whatever your pre-existing grasp of the material might be, it will be stronger by the time you've finished this book-- probably by the time you've finished its introduction. "Radical" is one of those words that many of us, myself included, tend to throw around a lot without always thinking much about what it really means. In language that is at once clear and technically precise, Kautzer lays out a historically and theoretically grounded picture of radical philosophy whose central concern is *always* the question of practical, real-world implications. If you are interested or getting interested in contemporary social justice and don't have much of a philosophy background, this is a perfect place to start. There is technical language, but terms are used clearly, consistently, and responsibly, which makes it a great way to encounter new words and concepts that are important to know. This is the rarest kind of philosophy book: A philosophy book to recommend to friends and family.

This is a great intro to Radical Philosophy By baimudan This is a great intro to Radical Philosophy; it's an updated philosophy textbook with great background on Marxism and class, feminism and queer theory as well as anti-racism and whiteness. The readings are thoughtful reflections for anyone who wants to understand oppression and how to work towards justice in our time. It's not too long, but it touches on so many rich topics that invite further reading. This is one of those books where the footnotes and bibliography are just as interesting as the text itself.

By Terese Howard If you believe that philosophy is not something "experts" do in an office, and that political action is not something that only happens when marching - than you must read this book. Otherwise put, if you want to look deeply at the struggles we fight (i.e. cops killing people of color, environmental destruction, mass homelessness and the criminalization of homelessness...), the structures, the history, and think as you fight...this is the book for you.
