Merchant, industrialist and explorer Trassan Kressind has an audacious plan – combining the might of magic and iron in the heart of a great ship to navigate an uncrossed ocean, seeking the city of the extinct Morfaan to uncover the secrets of their lost sciences. Ambition runs strongly in the Kressind family, and for each of Trassan’s siblings fate beckons. Soldier Rel is banished to a vital frontier, bureaucrat Garten balances responsibility with family loyalty, sister Katriona is determined to carve herself a place in a world of men, outcast Guis struggles to contain the energies of his soul, while priest Aarin dabbles in forbidden sorcery. The world is in turmoil as new money brings new power, and the old social order crumbles. And as mankind’s arts grow stronger, a terror from the ancient past awakens... This highly original fantasy depicts a unique world, where tired gods walk industrial streets and the tide’s rise and fall is extreme enough to swamp continents. Magic collides with science to create a rich backdrop for intrigue and adventure in the opening book of this epic saga.

The world building is staggering, both in a geographical sense and the author's unique treatment of tropes like undead and fairies. One of those slow burns that doesn't actually burn because you're imagination is so busy taking it all in. The characterizations are strong, many harboring both demons and interesting motivations. Prose is eloquent. The history is rich and mysterious, you can't wait to find out more. When magic or monsters or action sequences appear, they are quite impressive. We're talking China Mieville levels of innovation and vision in this one. I am totally smitten. Now comes the long wait for her second novel...

The author spends quite some time developing it so it seemed alive and I got lost in the book reading (one of those where you just have to stay up late to see what happens next). I enjoyed the character development, the strong female characters, and look forward to seeing the next edition, insofar as this definitely ended with a cliff hangar.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Neat world By Henry L. Lazarus K. M. McKinley starts an epic tale set on an ancient world, Ruthnia, that has seen numerous civilizations rise and fall. It is a world of two moons, of the Tyn, enslaved magical beings; and of steam power generated from magical sands. It is a world where horses are extinct and dogs, some of whom speak, have replaced them It is also a world where ghosts walk unless released by Guiders. Most of the Gods were killed two centuries before leaving only the God of Drink. A lot of technology has been rediscovered from ancient cities, and the discovery of an untouched city in the far, frozen South sets off a race among the hundred kingdoms. We follow six Kressind siblings. One designed The Iron Ship (paper from Rebellion), one is a playwright who suppresses his magical powers after he blinded one eye of his brother who has become a Guider. One bought rank in the army and because he slept with someone’s wife, finds himself exiled to the Gates of the world. And one takes over her husband’s factory, not approved for women in this Victorian age, and routs out corruption. This first part of the tale follows the construction of the first ship made of iron despite efforts to stop it. This is a marvelous and complicated world and I hope the sequels follow soon.Review printed by Philadelphia Weekly Press

Gai-Jin: The Epic Novel of the Birth of Modern Japan (Asian Saga, Book 3), by James Clavell

From Publishers Weekly The second volume in Clavell's Shogun quartet was a 13-week PW bestseller. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews Back to feudal Japan, which now enters the modern world, from the master of the three-decker behemoth (Shogun, Tai-pan, Noble House, etc.). Once you're into it, you forgive Clavell his galloping grammar and anachronisms and are swept along by spirited storytelling. Although Clavell clearly takes this hackwork as weighty and worthy entertainment, the heart quails at a serious weighing of a novel peopled with larger-than-life comic-strip characters caught up in clich‚s of Japanese exotica and international business deals as well as of internecine warfare--all of which Clavell writes at full throttle as if infused by the soul of Alexandre Dumas. A sequel to Tai-pan (1966), this is the sixth novel in Clavell's Asian saga and takes place in 1862. The gai-jin (foreigners) have arrived, intent on doing business with the Japanese. With laws against the use of the wheel in carriages or carts, the Japanese, their tradition- bound Emperor and competing warlords detest the foreigners, who have ruined the Chinese with the Opium Wars. The mighty Struan shipping empire, Noble House, has built a base in Yokohama, but with the illness (fatal) of Culum Struan, tai-pan (head) of the business empire, 20-year-old Malcolm Struan stands ready to become tai-pan. In the first chapter, however, he's attacked by samurai assassins on the Tokaido road and lies either bedridden or hobbles about for the rest of the novel. Young Angelique Richaud, 18, Parisienne daughter of a gambler who has lost what money the family had, sets her eye on Malcolm. Angelique is raped by a rogue samurai and now secretly carries his child, unbeknownst to the love- besotted Malcolm. Angelique's syphilis-stricken fellow Frenchman Andre Poncin wends his way through the plot toward a glorious love- death with his Japanese mistress while Japanese warlords fight each other, samurai endlessly behead samurai, earthquakes shiver, and Yokohama burns. You get your money's worth if you want to spend it here. (Literary Guild Dual Selection for Summer) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Review “With great skill and intelligence…Gai-Jin is just the ticket. It has it all: murders, battles, rapes, earthquakes, sword fights, insanely convoluted political intrigues, and innumerable accounts of ‘pillowing’ with beautiful women.”—San Francisco Chronicle“A grand historical perspective that makes us feel we’re understanding how today’s Japan came into being…absorbing…full of rich characters and complicated action.” —New York Times“Engrossing…entertaining…the broad portrait is accurate and as colorful as an ancient Kabuki play.”—People "Breathtaking....worth every word, every ounce, every penny."—Associated Press From the Trade Paperback edition.

Especially if you like fiction about Asia. Not only did he tell great stories but his books were filled with so much good history and culture about places like China and Japan. Though I was never a fan of "King Rat" books like Shogun, Tai-Pan, and Noble House were some of the best I ever read. They were books you never wanted to end.Gai-Jin starts off that way as well. The first 400 or 500 pages of Gai-Jin are classic Clavell. Combining many of the stories and characters from Shogun, Tai Pan, and Noble House. The books first 500 pages are terrific. Clavell using some familiar faces from his other books sets the stage for the Meiji Restoration in Japan. The book in typical Clavell fashion talks about the history of Japan after the arrival of Commodore Perry in 1853 as well as of China while it was divided up into spheres of influence.Gai-Jin is so good at setting the stage for Meiji with its characters discussing Japan's options of either learning for the Gai-Jin or attempting a futile resistance and facing humilation like China suffered under the Opium Wars.Unfortunately Clavell died shortly after finishing this book. And unfortunately the affects of his illness affect the second half of the book. The book just loses focus 1/2 way through. My gut feeling is that Clavell's illness just caught up to him. Because the book just goes downhill and nowhere which is not typical of Clavell.Clavell will never be replaced. Other fictional books about Asia do not even compare. Cloud of Sparrows, The Laura Joh Rowland Books, are ok but not in Clavell's league. The first half of Gai-Jin reminds us how good he was. Unfortunately, he will never be replaced.

The heir to the Noble House trading company, established in Tai-pan, travels to Japan to expand the fortunes of his great company. However, the new heir is not a strong as the great Dirk Struan and the rivals of the Noble House conspire to destroy it. All this treachery is set against a backdrop of terrorism and diplomatic intrigue as the warlords of Japan conspire to take advantage of the presences of the "gai jin".This book has the murders, battles, rapes, natural disasters and convoluted politics that are the hallmarks of Clavell's writing. However, just like the Noble House heir, the book starts off wounded and never really recovers. Unlike many of Clavell's other books, there is no strong lead character to really carry the story, and as a result, it does not move as smoothly or as interesting as his previous books, Shogun and Tai-pan.Unfortunately James Clavell has set the bar a little too high with his previous novels and this one isn't quite as good. Still, if you are a fan, it is worth reading. If you have never read a Clavell novel, pick up one of the others first and you will appreciate his writing more.

22 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant and addictive, but unsatisfying in the end. By trashcanman Just finished this book yesterday.I was positively hooked on it once I opened it. A friend recommended this one to me since I'm a big admirer of Japanese culture. This book has so many complicated stories going on it can be rough to keep up with them all at once, especially when they all weave together, but you still care for each of the characters. The story allows you to see all sides of every conflict, there is no black or white, it's all grey. You root for almost every character, even though they are all conflicting with each other. For example, the Shogunate rule the country with military might while the revolutionary shishi samurai, driven to poverty by the shogunate's excesses, are organising a coup to restore power to the emperor. The man passed over as shogun, Lord Yoshi, is strong and admirable and beset by enemies on all sides; a target of shishi assassinations and power grabs from within his own shogunate. Meanwhile, he must deal with the gai-jin (foreigners) who have been allowed to settle in Yokohama and are hated by shishi and shogunate alike. But the British navy threatens to crush Yedo (Tokyo) and take Japan by force if not allowed to conduct their trade. As the Japanese have no guns or cannons, they must comply...for now. Hiraga (who uses several names over the course of the book to hide his identity) is a shishi who wishes to exterminate all gai-jin and the shogunate as well. Sounds like an evil character, but you come to understand his point of view and even root for the guy as he crawls through the snakes' nest that is the politics of 19th century Japan. Like I said, a lot of grey area, when the shishi attempt to assassinate Yoshi you don't know who to root for. That kind of stuff makes this book so engaging. The Gai-jin themselves are the focal point of much of the book with Dirk Struan's son, Malcolm, falling in love with a beautiful frenchwoman against his mother's wishes and that conflict threatens to dominate the entire book. Dozens of characters and sub-plots to keep track of, I couldn't wait to see how this all ended. Sadly, the result is not pretty. A truly shocking event happens which throws a wrench into the last part of the book and taints the rest of the story with melancholy as the brilliant political machinations, schemes, and conflicts that made the book so exciting in the first place practically vanish unfulfilled as the aftermath of the tragedy takes over. Worst ending ever. Or should I say worst lack of an ending ever? The epilogue is pointless and solves nothing. So much is unnecessarily built up at the end and then just left there to drive you insane long after the pages have ended. Well there it is; read it and love it, but just don't expect anything to be resolved. Just be happy that life goes on for these characters, even if you don't get to read about it.

Finkelman If you want to use more cooperative activities and make your classroom more fun and engaging I recommend this book highly. I think people teaching any subject could use this book, not just math teachers, even though the title sounds as thought it is for math teachers in particular. I used ideas from this book already with my students and it went very well. I think the ideas in the book can help students more deeply consider questions posed by their teachers and in class and homework assignments. It had so many ideas that I could not take them all in the first read through and had to read it again and take notes. I plan to look at a list of the ideas in the book while I lesson plan.

528 A.D. Cymru (Wales) Melangell is a Lifebringer, a dragon-maiden learning to protect one of the land’s most ancient mysteries, y Ddraig. She expects to pass her years as have a score of teachers before her—sequestered, safeguarding an egg that barely moves from year to year, never using the deadly skills she’s been taught in secret. But the King’s relentless pursuit of this most sought after relic throws her into the middle of war and, adept or not, Melangell enters captivity with the egg to defend the sleeping dragonling within. Her abductor is Cai ap Cynyr—fierce warrior, loyal brother and sword-arm to the King. He’s been hunting all of Cymry for the treasures Artwr demands to ensure triumph against the invading Angles. He uses the intrigue of the Lifebringer to master his armsmen, but when he spirits Melangell and the dragon egg further into seclusion, she grows captivated by her captor. But she is a Lifebringer, sworn only to y Ddraig. And fierce Cai must deliver the dragonling to Artwr to at last drag himself out of his brother’s deep shadow. And all the while the egg readies itself to emerge. ‘Sacrifice’ is the first in a series of three books based around 'y Ddraig' (the Dragon) set in sixth-century Arthurian Wales, featuring characters based on Welsh myth and history.

Having always loved dragon stories I found this one wonderfully written with an intriguing plot. I really enjoyed the way the author wound Welsh myth/history into the story of Melangell, the strong-willed dragon-maiden. Definitely a series to purchase. Can't wait for Book 2!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Unpredictably great! By T. Gleichner I will admit, after reading the back of this book I questioned what made me request it. Don't get me wrong, it isn't that it didn't sound interesting, but it isn't the kind of book I normally read. So, I reluctantly picked it up and decided to give it a go.This book is about dragons, warriors and the people sworn to protect a dragon egg (Creil) known as the Morwyn Ddraig, or Lifebringer. They are devoted to keeping the Creil safe, and they will do anything to make sure that happens.Artwr, the high Chieftain, will stop at nothing to get the Creil. He harbors a living dragon that he saps of all of its resources to help his men in battle, and has been searching for the egg for quite some time. He sends his brother Cai out to scour the lands in search of the Creil. And when Cai comes upon Melangell, he sees a young girl, strong in with and conviction. He feels drawn to her from the start, and even after what he does to her their bond grows.Melangell is the new Lifebringer, keeper of the Creil. As her bond with Cai forms, she is torn because the Morwyn Ddraig are not supposed to have any kind of sexual relationship with a man - they are bound to the Creil and their life should be devoted to it. But the feelings she has for Cai can't be ignored.I absolutely loved this story. I loved how the relationship between Cai and Melangell formed and how Melangell released her people from Cai's grasp. I also really liked how the plot flowed and how you could tell that not only was Melangell torn between Cai and the Creil, Cai was also torn, loving a brother who was not his by blood, but was given the highest place by their father. Even though Cai knew he was bad, he still tried to protect him.I can't wait to see what this author brings with her next book. I really loved this one!4 1/2 stars

A Skillful Portrayal By Sara I read Mr. Collins' account of how he got Darcy and Elizabeth together with increasing incredulity at the ridiculous (Mr. Darcy confiding in Mr. Collins in Lady Catherine's Library!) to the ludicrous (Mr. Darcy begging Mr. Collins for his advice!!)/ Noting it was written late in his life when most of the ones who witnessed any part of this story were unable to confirm or deny it (and even managing to get it published years later!!!) I could only guess it was an attempt by a lonely old man to rewrite history to gain some semblance of consequence he longed for all the years he spent toadying to whomever could give him any, Old men easily forget facts as they succumb to vainglorious memories of their own previously unperceived heroics. One of the facts he may have been unaware of is that Jane Austen was not the only to share this story to the world--hundreds of other writers have written versions of it that came to the same conclusion: these two were meant for each other. Not one of them so much as hinted that the Reverend Mr. Collins was anything but the pompous toady she had originally described, except he himself (see his previous attempt in Mr. Collins' Deception.)However, this book, at least in the beginning, before the absurd narrative of Mr. Darcy's inability to think how he could do anything about Wickham and Lydia, or approaching Bingley and then Elizabeth, was written so much in character that I actually fell asleep twice while reading it--maybe a remedy for insomnia? But as it unfolded, I became agitated as the writer's skill in portraying so well the voice and thinking of Mr. Collins made me dislike the book immensely. I am easily moved and become emotionally involved with favorite characters, so I began to not enjoy the book and determined to give him a low rating. As I thought about it, I had to admit to admiring the ability get inside such a character and write it with such skill, even though it did impugn the character of one of my most beloved male characters, with the help of Colin Firth, perhaps! So I wavered and decided on 5-stars for his skill--not his story--I totally reject it.

Of course, that's not surprising coming from William Collins, particularly since he is reporting his management of the proceedings at the direction of his blah, blah, blah benefactress, who now wants Anne to marry a titled man of wealth instead of Darcy. I found it to be a delightful story, full of humor for the reader, not the characters, as Mr. Collins reveals the true tale, discrediting some reporting by Miss Austen of the events. Did it give new insights into Mr. Collins' personality and character? No, not really, but come on; can we really expect that to change? I guess there must have been some improvement, however, for I thought much less about his smell and greasiness as he related his version.Of course, there were errors in grammar--has that become the standard now. But they were not so frequent as is often the case, and I found the writing style interesting and pleasant. I hope you will as well.

By glh Edited well and word choices delightful, Latin and Greek quotes appreciated and pondered. If the author is inclined to write more P & P stories I will be inclined to read them.

Help students meet today’s literacy demands with this new book from Terry Roberts and Laura Billings. The authors show how a seminar approach can lead students deeper into a text and improve their speaking, listening, and writing skills, as recommended by the Common Core State Standards.

Roberts and Billings provide easy-to-follow information on implementing Paideia Seminars, in which students discuss a text and ask open-ended questions about it. When teachers use this lesson format, students are exposed to a wide range of increasingly complex texts. They also learn how to collaborate, talk about, and reflect on what they’re reading, to make meaning independently and together. Seminars can be done in English class and across the curriculum, using social studies documents or math problems as the texts under discussion.

Teaching Critical Thinking also offers an array of practical resources:

  • teacher lesson plans
  • student samples
  • a list of possible ideas and values for discussion
  • a guide to asking good questions during a seminar
  • six full seminar plans (including the texts), covering literature, social studies, and science topics

Land law, water rights, deeds of ownership? Boring. Unless of course, people are shooting at you because of them. The Civil War has disrupted thousands of lives, including that of Sarah Jackson, whose husband was killed for not joining the Confederate Army in Georgia. Sarah and her daughter flee to Nevada Territory and are eligible for homestead rights. After claiming her one hundred sixty acres in the lush Golden Valley, her world crumbles again. Banker Preston Miller claims he owns the entire Golden Valley and all the water in the Good Hope River. Jackson cries foul in a letter to the U.S. Attorney in San Francisco, and Jacob Chance, U.S. Marshal rides to Preston, Nevada Territory to “settle this little land dispute.” He finds many in the town fear for their lives and livelihood, but it takes just a few shots from big guns to convince them to back the marshal. Lives are lost, buildings are burned, the town itself is in jeopardy, and the U.S. Marshal finds himself up against an army. Anarchy is the rule in the Golden Valley. Fighting the bad guys is hard enough, he also finds himself fascinated by the daughter of one of the ranchers whose property he is trying to save. Will the town survive? Will the ranches survive? Is romance in the air? All the answers are inside these covers.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. My kind of western By Silvia Villalobos This book, with its western style and no-nonsense character, pulls you in by the neck and doesn't let go. In looking at the author's biography, it is no wonder that living such a rich life (he once lived on the Island of Guam and worked in radio) is a never-ending source of storytelling, which the author tells in a unique and creative way. The prose is written so that it keeps one wanting to go back and savor the words again and again. Here's one example and this one comes early in the story: "Steel gray eyes that gave one the impression they could burrow into the soul ... soften at the cry of a child or the lilt of a lovely voice."The story is set in a time of anarchy, in the Wild West, a time when guns were fired in the blink of an eye because land disputes had to be settled. When lives were taken in a heartbeat. That's when Jacob Chance, U.S. Marshal, came in. At this point, the reader is fully engrossed by the story of the man and the town where ranchers fight for survival, and romance is in the air, and not one day is easy living. Soon, I felt as if I knew every single person populating this book, until the very last word on the page.I highly recommend this book to everyone looking not only for a good western, but a style of writing that is sure to take this author far.

Simplistic Approach to Alignment and Data By UrbanEd This book provides a simplistic approach to aligning standards and setting up teachers to have conversations about data. Teachers in some districts may find this book somewhat elementary. Other districts who are just now implementing these common sense approaches may find this book to be helpful in setting up the basic systemic structures needed. Sindelar's words are very easy to follow. I would recommend this book most to new teachers in districts that already do this or need help in setting up the proper methods of curriculum alignment and don't have help within their district. I would also recommend it for administrators who have not taken coursework within the last 10 years. Few non-novice curriculum people would find this book to push their insight that thoroughly. However, this book has a purpose and serves it well.

Practical Approach for Educational Practitioners By Steve Tucker I found this book to be extremely helpful for educational practitioners to understand and apply best practice applications for data-driven curriculum development. This user friendly book is essential for anyone in the education who desires to transform their outdated curriculum into a modern, result focused map. The initiatives that Dr. Sindelar describes serve to not only enhance the teaching methods for educators, but increase student achievement. The book focuses on identifying specific, measurable and attainable student learning targets that are result-orientated and timely. I highly recommend this useful resource for anyone in the education field.

A must read for all educators By ASRAR MAALIKI The author did an excellent job stressing how important data is to increasing student achievement and closing the achievement gap between students. There are strategies on how to use assessment to drive instruction. Dr. Sindelar talks about how collecting data without putting it to use and not having an action plan is useless. The first step is sharing learning targets with students, aligning curriculum to standards, assessing, collecting data and re-teaching. This book is my go to book and it is a must read for everyone in education.

I have to admit that I actually despised the very concept of the self centered vampire and all it entailed. The werewolves come across as so much superior and humane. They are sexy, earthy, fun loving and family-friendly. They think of others before themselves.I was at a terrible disadvantage by coming in at the second book. I knew nothing of any previous history of the families or of the characters. I floundered fir a short time. But it was fun catching up. I found myself saying, "now WHO is this?" and is "he good or bad?" So many times I needed a scorecard. The family dynamics were astounding!! To starve a woman to achieve your own twisted outcome is just sick!! No spoilers from me. But I will say, I lost it for a good TWO weeks.Hero Rating. 5 Stars ( multiple heroes)Heroine Rating. 5. ABSOLUTELYI was given this advanced reader copy in exchange for an experienced, honest review of which I have given. It was a difficult book to read and my "tender sensibilities" were stretched to a fine line. But I'd take that chance again and again. Real life?? I hope not. I cried more times than I could count. Was it we worth it?? Definitely.

I just loved it!!!!!!Nail biting at times buuuuut you HAVE to trek on and find out what’s going to happen, you just have to!!!!! Cade and his mate make sure all is asit should be and help those in the pack having trouble (and boy, some have a lot more trouble than others ;) )! Lots of action in regards to Milo and his mate.WHAT an ending.....didn't expect that at ALL! NOW, I really can't wait (nail biting again) for the 3rd book to come out so I can find out what’s going on! Hoping this end(yikes) is really NOT “the end” at all!

By SpanishLady Although the story had me confused at the beginning because of the multiple characters, even though I know the from Book 1, soon I was able to keep pace with them.I simply loved Milo, always did and Mya what a handful she is. Can't wait to see how she copes.Milo will soon have his hands full and I can't wait, a taste of his own medicine maybe?Such a vast array of characters and all with their special gift.A story full of passion and action that will keep you panting in more ways than one! Can't wait to read the next book.I was gifted this book for an honest review.

The year is 1986. It’s been four years since Albert fell off the edge of the world; a world he wished would forget about him; forget he ever existed. He hadn’t really existed though, had he? The School had sheltered him in an academic womb – its winner of a specially-created Nobel Prize, the Guggenheim Fellowship, seven Grammy Awards and two Pulitzers – hustled around the planet from concert stage to concert stage, seeing only fleeting glimpses of life from the back of stretch limousines and penthouse hotel rooms. Then murder entered his life. For six months after that, one hideous death led to another, like a string of blood-red pearls, trailing Albert to the edge of the abyss; forcing him out of the womb, naked and exposed. Finally, he’d fled to a place of safety, where even Death couldn’t find him. But it did.

About the Author

Ben Frain

Ben Frain has been a web designer/developer since 1996. He is currently employed as a Senior Front-end Developer at Bet365. Before the web, he worked as an underrated (and modest) TV actor and technology journalist, having graduated from Salford University with a degree in Media and Performance. He has written four equally underrated (his opinion) screenplays and still harbors the (fading) belief he might sell one. Outside of work, he enjoys simple pleasures. Playing indoor football while his body and wife still allow it, and wrestling with his two sons. His other book, Sass and Compass for Designers is available now. By Joost Meurs "Responsive Web Design with HTML5 and CSS3" offers lots of examples of modern techniques that are available nowadays for building a responsive website. The differences between a responsive website and a mobile website are clearly explained. The author emphasizes that responsive web design is not the solution for all problems related to showing websites on different (mobile) devices. In some situations however, when building a pure mobile website is too expansive, a responsive design can be an excellent option. It offers an alternative that is normally better than a standard website with fixed-width design. The author also shows some cases in which responsive web design is less suitable, like a client who wants the site to look exactly the same on IE 8 and below. A rule-of-the-thumb is that when more than 70% of all users are using IE 8 or below, don't use a responsive web design. Is has too many disadvantages.Media queries and using percentages in CSS is covered very well. These are more or less the basics for a responsive web design. With all the examples given, the book is a manual for making a responsive website, especially in combination with HTML5 and CSS3.As said before, the book contains a lot of examples. Normally however, a very limited part of the HTML or CSS code is given. Also the browser prefixes are omitted. Personally I would have preferred less information about the possibilities of HTML5 and CSS3 and a more step-by-step approach to the new responsive website. Now the results of the code changes are shown, but the code itself is omitted. This prevents the reader building the same site together with the author.

It can be so easy to view it as just another buzzword, more marketing jargon if you may but if you take the time to understand what is means for web development, you will see its pretty hot with huge potential. Many people, I suspect, are unclear on what exactly Responsive web design is, what does it mean. Indeed, I thought ' ooh not another book on fluid layouts '. Far from it, I can assure you. The author moves through a well worked out movie website project to show that Responsive web design is not a huge single monolithic thing but instead a series of existing technologies ( HTML5, CSS3 ) and design techniques ( flexible grid layout, flexible images and media and media queries ). The majority of the book naturally focuses on HTML5 and CSS3 and the powerful enhancements these technologies bring forth. In addition to their application in Responsive web design the author explores new HTML5 elements ( the semantically meaningful nav element and many more for example ) and shows the vast improvements in CSS3 aesthetics. I particularly loved the simplicity of Text Shadows but we also have Transitions, Transformations and Animations. All very, very useful stuff.HTML5 and CSS3 are maturing technologies, best to keep this in mind. Hence, to make available the majority of their features in older browsers such as Internet Explorer 6,7 and to a lesser extent 8, not to mention running your site across multiple browsers, a JavaScript tool called Modernizr is required. The last chapter explores this tool.Readers should have familiarity with previous versions of HTML markup and CSS selectors to gain maximum benefit. The book is really a joy to read and perhaps a launching pad for interesting developments yet to come. Wonderful stuff.

Media query, fluid grid layout and flexible images By Arun Mahendrakar The book does a great job in providing details on the 'Responsive Web Design' concept.Media queries is one the main topics of the book and the author does an excellent job in explaining it. Fluid grid layout is another technique that is easy to understand just by reading through the paragraphs. Flexible images is the third component of the whole Responsive Web Design (Media query and Fluid grid layout being the other two of course) and I was amazed at the simplicity of implementing this feature.A good chunk of the book concentrates on HTML5 and CSS3 features which makes sense in light of how these new features help in creating a responsive site. The author also cautions the readers of when not to use responsive web design. The book contains many websites that are highly useful tools for a web developer. The book creates a fictitious website to help its readers implement the features. I'm one of those guys who likes work with the book, so that boosted my understanding big time. For the hungry minds, CSS3 - The Missing Manual by David Sawyer McFarland is a great add-on for this book.

A TRUE AMERICAN FAMILY SAGA: Can we learn from our ancestors? Do our relatives’ behaviors help shape our own? In "Unexpected Gifts" that is precisely what happens to Sonia, a confused college student, heading for addictions and forever choosing the wrong man. Searching for answers, she begins to read her family’s diaries and journals from America’s past: the Vietnam War, Woodstock, and Timothy Leary era; Tupperware parties, McCarthyism, and Black Power; the Great Depression, dance marathons, and Eleanor Roosevelt; the immigrant experience and the Suffragists. Back and forth the book journeys, linking yesteryear with modern life until finally, by understanding her ancestors' hardships and faults, she gains enough clarity to make some right choices.

By Author/Reviewer Geri Ahearn A young woman, who attends college becomes more-and-more confused as she continues to make decisions, while repeating the cycle of dating Mr. Wrong, and finding herself on the helpless road that leads her to no-where. In her desperate search to find herself, she winds up finding much more than she ever dreamed of, when she began reading diaries and journals from her ancestors. The more Sonia read, the more she began to understand how hardship and uneasy times affect not only those who lived through them, but the next generation, who deeply felt the results from those who survived.Master storyteller S.R. Mallery creates a colorful portrait of the past as she takes the reader through an incredible time-machine from one generation to the next, while we witness unforgettable, historical events that come to life, along with unique characters. The treasure that Sonia found, a discovery of her roots, was the golden key that unlocked the secret door, which helped to shape her own life through the experience and lessons learned from her ancestors. The author has a remarkable gift. The amazing ability not only to bring rich, historical events to life, but also the ability to perfectly blend different generations, showing how they all connect. As I read through the intriguing and bittersweet pages, the heartfelt stories within the pages of this book not only brought me back to my generation as a Babyboomer, but also to the flashbacks down memory lane of my own father's stories about his Purple Heart and his touching stories about Pearl Harbor, and survival from turmoil during his generation. This book will be thought-provoking, long after we close it. "UNEXPECTED GIFTS" is as captivating as Forest Gump, as compelling as We Were Soldiers, and as impressive as Saving Private Ryan. Highly recommended to all those who enjoy historical fiction.

If you simply want to read a fabulous story, this is it. Aspiring writers, if you want to see how to write a book, this is the one. The plot is superb, the characters believable, the historical events well-researched, and the pages demand that you turn them as fast as you can. Everything from bad boy rock stars to suffragettes! But what I found to be the most interesting thing was the ability of the author to find a vehicle in which she can bring in historical events that affect the contemporary characters. It simply is one of the best books I've ever read. I wish I could give it six stars. Trust me, it's that good. Recommend it? To everyone!!! Thank you Ms. Mallery for writing such a wonderful book.

By KathyFromFranklin I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful time period book – and it’s an especially great book for book clubs!I was tasked with picking a book for our book club – and I began a search to find a time period fiction book that had very good reviews. I found it with Sarah Mallery’s book ‘ Unexpected Gifts’, and that’s exactly what the books was full of – gifts! It is a great story telling about many generations of a family that was an American (and even international) history trip as well. I enjoyed how the book switched point of views between the various characters. What a treasure trove of rich family history Sonia found in her parents attic. What’s especially great about the book is that it lent itself so well to book club conversation. It made all of us want to journal a book to our own children! Our book club was especially lucky in that we had the privilege of having Sarah Mallery join us (via phone from CA to our group in MA) – that was my ‘unexpected gift’ to our book club! We SO enjoyed and appreciated her taking the time to talk to us. What a special night that was!
