For the Temple descends into the turmoil that ended with the destruction of Jerusalem by Titus in A.D. 70. Then, his bravery in a storm attracts the attention of the governor, Josephus. Suddenly, he finds himself in the forefront of events. After escaping from the massacre at Jotapata in A.D. 67, John, with his loyal band, becomes a hero to the Jews and a scourge to the Romans. He disrupts Roman work parties. . .showers arrows and boulders onto troops. . .burns Roman camps. . .rescues his betrothed from slavery. . .even fights Titus himself in hand-to-hand combat:

"John's knife fell from his hand. He tried to rise to his feet; then everything seemed to swim round, and he fell insensible. Titus rose to his feet; he was shaken by the fall, and he, too, had lost much blood. Panting from his exertions, he looked down upon his prostrate foe, and the generosity which was the prevailing feature of his character, except when excited in battle, mastered him. 'By Hercules,' he exclaimed, 'that is a gallant youth, though he is a Jew, and he has well-nigh made an end of me! What will Vespasian say when he hears that I have been beaten in a fair fight and owe my life to the mercy of a Jew!'"

In the final defense of the Temple, John is delivered yet again, only to be enslaved. But his slavery leads him to Caesar's court and finally home, not just to Glilee, but to that Galilean preacher his father had recognized as a prophet forty years before.

57 of 59 people found the following review helpful. I read all 400 pages in two days! By A Customer "Clash! Bang! Ka-ching!" The valley echoes with the sound of iron upon iron. Tight-lipped the two solitary foes circle each other, thrusting, slashing, striking, and warding off the blows of the other. Suddenly, the younger man, dressed in Jewish garb, and armed only with a sword and buckler, dashes under the heavily armed Roman's sword. The sudden impact throws the Roman to the ground, though the Hebrew is stuck hard on the head. Brushing aside the blood that pours down his forehead the Jew siezes his knife and and raises it, to end the life of his prostrate fiend. "Strike, Jew! I am Titus!" the Roman boldly states. Who are these two combatants? What do they have against each other? The Hebrew is 19-year-old John of Gamala, a hero to the Jews and a scourge to the Roman army. Titus is General of the Roman army invading Israel, whose people are fresh from throwing off the Roman government. How will this deadly duel play out? Never mind. This excellently written novel is much better than Super Glue ever dreamed of being. "For The Temple", if anything can, will glue you to your seat so that it will take a bulldozer to dislodge you. {note: we don't recomend the use of this book for repairing broken toys, however.} "For The Temple" chronicles the life of a Galilean teenager at the time of the fall of Jerusalem. From the storm on Lake Tibereas, to the siege at Jotatpata, you will grow to love and admire John, son of Simon, as he grows, wars, and has adventures of all kinds defending Josephus, Gamala, his betrothed wife, and finally the Temple in Jerusalem. Will he survive that monumentous occasion? More importantly, who will win the afforementioned duel? READ THE BOOK AND FIND OUT! (no, Amazon did not hire me to sell their book, I did this originally as a school assignment) I highly recommend this historically accurate book to people who like history, adventure, or just plain good books. Also to people who HATE history, as a good way to gag it down.

Miller Combining accounts from Josphus and the Old and New Testament, Henty weaves a tale of bravery set in the time between Christ's crucifiction and the destruction of the Temple. As with all Henty books, his hero is brave, honest, kind, and resourceful, modelling the best aspects of behavior. Highly recommended.

Before I read this I knew almost nothing about the destruction of the Temple. Now I understand it clearly. The politics and different factions of the time period are described very well. You come away with a very good understanding of how all the events unfolded. Plus, the dialogue is not quite as lengthy as some of the other Henty novels. Worth reading.

Josiah Royce as Public Philosopher By Robin Friedman The early 20th Century is sometimes characterized as a "golden age of American philosophy" with thinkers such as William James, Charles Sanders Peirce, and John Dewey setting forth different approaches to what would become a distinctly American philosophy of pragmatism. Deeply influenced by pragmatism, the philosopher Josiah Royce (1855 -- 1916) has sometimes been overlooked among his colleagues. Royce taught a form of philosophical idealism which has long been out of fashion. A philosophical idealist, such as Royce, tends to see the nature of all reality as spiritual or mental. Born in a California mining camp, Royce spent most of his career at Harvard. His thought has received increased attention in recent years, especially his writings on ethics and his later philosophy which may qualify his earlier metaphysical idealism. In 2007, I had the good fortune to attend a seminar at the Harvard Divinity School, "William James and Josiah Royce a century later:Pragmatism and Idealism in Dialogue" which taught me a great deal about these two thinkers. I am pleased to be able to continue to read and think about Royce and James.In 1908, Royce gathered together five earlier lectures and published them in a short book called "Race Questions, Provincialism and other American Problems." In these essays, Royce stated that he wanted to apply "to some of our American problems" the "general doctrine about life" which Royce had set forth in an earlier book he called "The Philosophy of Loyalty." In that book, Royce argued that loyalty to a good cause, freely chosed by each individual, which, while local in focus, worked ultimately to the service of humanity was the basis of ethics and a good life. For Royce, "Loyalty is the practical expression of an idealistic philosophy. Such a philosophy, in relation to theoretical and practical problems I have long tried to teach." And in this book, Royce emphasizes concrete applications of his teachings rather than speculations. This is a philosophical role that many current practitioners of the discipline have forgotten.This valuable reprint of Royce's 1908 book published by Fordham University Press includes, in addition to the five original essays, a collection of six additional essays by Royce added by the editors which complement and expand upon the thought of the initial volume. The book also includes two lengthy essays by the editors of the volume: Scott Pratt, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oregon, and Shannon Sullivan, Professor of Philosophy, Women's Studies, and African and African American Studies at Pennsylvania State University. Pratt's introduction offers a summary of each essay and an assessment of it's place in Royce's thought while Sullivan's introduction focuses on Royce's essay on race.Royce's opening essay, "Race Questions and Prejudices" is indeed the most famous and controversial work in this volume. Royce recognized the importance of the essay by naming the entire collection after it. As Sullivan's introduction points out, it was rare for an early 20th Century American philosopher to devote sustained attention to race in the United States and the American South. The only parallels are in the works of W.E.B. DuBois, a student of Royce's, and of Jane Addams. Royce's essay examines Southern Jim Crow in light of English experiences in Jamaica and Trinidad with a racially-mixed society. Some of what Royce has to say will give modern readers pause, as Royce clearly shared some of the biases of his time. But much of this essay, particularly in the opening and the concluding sections, is an attack on the very concept of race and on the claim that race plays any significant role in assessing the human mind or heart of individuals. Near the end of the essay, Royce describes racial distinctions as based upon "human illusions" (p. 68). He relocates the source of racial discrimination by arguing that that "our so-called race problems are merely the problems caused by our antipathies." (p.65) Royce concludes his essay on race with the following observation (p.68):"For my part, then, I am a member of the human race, and this is a race which is, as a whole, considerably lower than the angels, so that the whole of it very badly needs race-elevation. In this need of my race I personally and very deeply share. And it is in this spirit that I am able to approach our problem."I think there is a good deal to be learned from reading this essay, both historically and contemporaneously.Besides the essay on race and prejudice, I found particularly worthwhile the third essay in the collection titled, "On Certain Limitations of the Thoughtful Public in America." Royce rejects emphatically a frequently-voiced criticism of the United States, during Royce's time and today, that it is predominantly materialistic, crass, and philistine. Royce writes instead that "we are largely a nation of idealists" (p. 93)(in a nontechnical sense of "idealism") and qualifies and defends this view in the course of the essay. The essay proceeds to criticize some of the efforts of American intellectuals in trying to understand the United States through overly-broad abstractions and theories. Royce ties in his critique -- rationalistic philosopher though he is -- to what Royce finds as a degree of over-intellectualism in the United States where educated individuals especially are all-too-ready to pass beyond their areas of knowledge and pass unilateral judgment on every political, social, or economic issue faced in the United States. Royce writes "remember, life is vast, and your little clearing is very small. In the rest of life, cultivate naivete, accept authority, dread fads, follow as faithfully as your instinct permits other lovers of the ideal who are here wiser than you, and be sure that though your head splits you will never think out all your problems, or formulate all your ideals so long as you are in this life. .. Be childlike in much of life in order to become maturely wise in some things." (p.115)The remaining essays in the 1908 volume and this expanded edition describe the nature of American localism, and its importance to Royce as a source of individual commitment, pluralism, and opposition to conformity and the "mob". Two of the essays describe the history of the early California in which Royce grew up and its continuing importance to his life. Royce was interested in sports as a builder of American character. The expanded essays include a perceptive study of the American obsession with football and its good and its (mostly) negative consequences. There is a good essay on religion in American life, and in Royce's understanding of the role of the teacher of philosophy in studying religion.This book encouraged me to think about how the discipline of philosophy may still play a role in public life in the United States. Readers will find much to question in these essays by Royce but much to learn as well. This is a valuable book for those with a strong interest in American thought.Robin Friedman

Interesting, if slightly dated, analysis By A Customer Royce provides a fairly open-minded and integrationist viewpoint, given the day and age he lived in. His assertion that he belongs to the race of mankind, one far below that of angels and as a whole in need of elevation, is certainly startling given the racial situation of his day and age. Enlightening, well-written and interesting. Recommended if you can track down a copy.

California's first philosopher reflects on the importance of local attachments and loyalties as essential for the spiritual and physical sustenance of our lives. His examples range widely. His words speak astutely to those who would dismiss wise provincialism as an oxymoron, when it remains essential to our well-being. The editors have done a superb job in bringing out these texts for contemporary reflection.

About the Author Peter Dickinson was born in Africa but raised and educated in England. From 1952 to 1969 he was on the editorial staff of Punch, and since then earned his living writing fiction of various kinds for children and adults. His books have been published in several languages throughout the world.   The author of twenty-one crime and mystery novels for adults, Dickinson was the first to win the Gold Dagger Award of the Crime Writers’ Association for two books running: The Glass-Sided Ants Nest (1968) and The Old English Peepshow (1969). Dickinson was shortlisted nine times for the prestigious Carnegie Medal for children’s literature and was the first author to win it twice.   Dickinson served as chairman of the Society of Authors and was a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2009 for services to literature. Peter Dickinson died on December 16, 2015, at the age of eighty-eight.

This is not particularly a mystery, though Dickinson is a talented mystery writer and a murder occurs. This is a beautifully drawn and utterly convincing portrait of life in colonial Africa and in the conflicts and misunderstandings that plague well-meaning people dealing with cultures outside their own. I spent many years in post-colonial Africa and based on my experiences, TERFUGA is a masterpiece and a haunting work of literature about the colonial situation. It is pertinent that Dickinson grew up in colonial Africa and knows whereof he speaks.

Narrative necessity and the entire flavor of the story requires the "key event" be out the main narrative flow.Additional enjoyment for those who like Masterpiece Theatre type programs will be pleased that one of the plot strands has the characters' filming one. Additional humor.

Dickinson deftly Inserts the reader into the complex, convoluted and short-sighted (indirect) British rule in sub-Saharan Africa. That short-sighted (indirect) rule parallels the flaws of the U.S. and others ineptly dealing with the tribal antipathies of the Middle East. Read, be wowed by its intensity and be sad.for the waste of humanity in war. Another winner from a writer of global ethics.

By Duodentes I bought this book through a Kickstarter campaign because I'm predisposed to like Judith Tarr's work. I was not disappointed.Forgotten Suns is a hybrid science fiction/fantasy (fantasy only if you consider faster-than-light space travel, reincarnation (implied), and highly developed psi in humans in the far future to be scientific impossibilities). Boiled down, Forgotten Suns is a space adventure (with superhero).It features two point-of-view characters, a 13-year-old girl (prodigy) who embarks on the adventure to save the family business (an archaeological dig on a mysterious planet, long-since abandoned by most of its humanoid inhabitants, with a few left behind as caretaker/guardians). The other POV character is the girl's aunt, an emotionally scarred veteran of a psionic spy agency who is ordered to return to the scene of the events that scarred her to finish the job. This is essentially a macguffin since it serves to get niece and aunt off the planet in the company of a mysterious stranger who recently turned up.It's the stranger's imperatives that drive the plot. The stranger turns out to be a psionically advanced native of the planet who wants to find out why it was abandoned and where the people went.The psionic spy agency and some of its minions are, of course, the villains of the piece. Not to mention the [well, I can't mention it because spoilers, but superheroism is required to deal with it].The three main characters do grow and learn and change, but the story is about 60 percent adventure (traveling about, solving the mystery, and one-upping/eliminating villains) to 40 percent character growth, well-blended.There's also a nice space beast to ride around in.In the opening stages of the story, if you're familiar with Tarr's earlier work, you'll experience a "whoa!" moment when you suddently recognize one of the characters. To avoid spoilers, I'll just say that it's not too long before you'll realize that Forgotten Suns is a continuation. That said, it's an independent story, and it's entirely unnecessary to have read any of the related novels. I recommend that you do anyway.It's also a continuation--to some extent--of some of the ideas introduced in Living in Threes, specifically the concept of a "worldsweb," an extrapolation of the World Wide Web that involves brain implants and/or psi.One of the things I like about Judith Tarr's work is that she respects the reader's intelligence and doesn't describe every detail of the novel's world or explain every piece of technology or exactly how things work or why things happen. She gives the needed information but allows the reader to fill things in, to make the leaps of imagination. If you want every i dotted and every t crossed, every equation solved with accompanying engineering drawings, this isn't the book for you. The advantage is that the book doesn't go on for 500 pages more than necessary to tell the story. I've discovered in fact that it's longer than it seemed while I was reading it (this is good)--about 350 hardcover pages.And though the novel is open ended, it's self-contained. You may want to know what happens next, but you won't be crushed if there's no sequel. Though it would be nice, pretty please.This is not a love story. There are some sketchy romantic relationships (including same sex), but they aren't the focus of the novel. More time is spent on interactions with the nice space beast and on the training of horse-like antelopes and, especially, on friendships and family obligations and on cooperation among several people accustomed to going it alone and doing things their own way. Synergy.

A Great Science Fiction Adventure By Christine Meads I won this book on LibraryThing and I thoroughly enjoyed it.It is a science fiction/fantasy space adventure with a hero and a young girl.Some of the people on Nevermore are psi, and the Military Intelligence comes to take those children who have psi. Aisha is one, and one day she tries to help her parents who are part of an archeological team, and blows open a hill. Out of that hill comes a man--she has awakened someone that has been sleeping for over 6000 years. She calls him Rama. With her help, and the help of her aunt, Khalida, Rama tracks down what's left of his people.This book is full of adventure, of jumping between universes (if there are more than ours), and the struggle of Aisha to grow up and mature. It deals with love, friendships, and promises kept.I would recommend this book to those interested in space travel and adventure.

What an excellent continuation of the 'adventures' of Mike Chance, the man who surely has to be the toughest conman in today's noir fiction. My thanks to the author for sharing his talent and incredible writing.The story gets underway at full throttle and never lets up until the last word. And the words in Mr. Infante's writing are razor sharp, because his sentences are devoid of any unnecessary stuff.Characterizations, settings and pure atmosphere are impeccable, and there isn't one wasted word in it.Late 1930's Los Angeles as well as its surrounding areas are the canvas on which the incredibly hard-boiled story unfolds, ...and to boot, there is this wonderful sense of insight into psyche and motivations, that triggered a grim chuckle here and there on my side. The author displays an absolutely unique creative brilliance, with no room given to any fake moral glossing over when things and situations in the plot get seriously out-of-hand for the protagonists.I should also like to say that in my opinion Mr. Infante's pure narrative sets a new standard for crime fiction and raises the bar high indeed.He's created a timeless, period hard-boiled classic that is in a league completely of its own, ..and I'm sure looking forward to be in on what fate has next in store for Mike Chance.

If you like your crime novels fast, grisly, and packed with action, Fixed Fight more than fits the bill.

He left a wide swath of bodies but the story tumbles on and you keep turning the pages eager to see what's next. Can't wait for volume three!

It took me a while to get into it, with all the strange names and all, but when I finally immersed myself into the story of The Gully Snipe, I couldn't put it down, which meant my staying up through the night to finish the book. It is a fantasy based book, quite unusual from what JF Smith would normally write but not less fascinating. I will not go into the blurb of the story, but I can truthfully say that plot takes you to another world and it is an adventure not to be missed. I loved All the characters, both good and bad, they only made the book more exciting. Truthfully, not all tales end the way we want( Like the outcome of Bayle looking for his father Ollon) but that's life. I would recommend this book and say to readers out there, that your patience at the beginning will truly be rewarded with fantastic story.4.5 stars

It was an outstanding, heartfelt (I do not have enough adjectives to desribe this ) book. I read daily probably I go through 2 or 3 books a week may be more. Latakia still remains 1 of my all-time favorite books. So when I saw this new book by JF Smith. I had to give it a go. I am not big on fantasy books. and this book was hard to get into. It is not a romance. but if you can persevere past the first 10% Its a great read. Truly amazing and its not always about the HEA.This book is a great story period. If you are looking for a fantasy world with romance The Lightning-Struck Heart is a good book. I cant wait to see where book 2 goes in this fantasy series

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A great tale By Michael Krawitz Latakia (JF Smith's prior novel) was a lot of fun to read. Gully Snipe was fun to read as well, but was also a great -- possibly masterful -- tale. The plot had adventure, and was very well crafted and engaging. The protagonist, who had a little bit of Jack Sparrow in him, had charm, impressive depth of emotion and character, and good character evolution. When I was reading, I was simply enjoying the story and characters. When I was done, I realized there were elements of true literature, but with a completely modern, natural and approachable style. Although the title says "Book 1," Gully Snipe is a complete story. I eagerly look forward to the next book featuring these characters.

I really love how Mr. Henty shows the true reasons behind Cortez's conquest, and not the pack of lies that we usually hear in history. The thing that got my attention was the Henty made it clear that both sides had their good and bad intentions. The Mexicans wanted peace to reign but yet they exercised brutal human sacrifices to their gods. The Spanish wanted to spread the Gospel to the world but they were noted for their brutality in war. There are no reasons to search for good or bad guys, as the hero in this story is torn between the two sides. If you really want to read how history should be written, read this book.

It tells the story of a boy who is shipwrecked on a island where the people think he is a god. When Cortez comes to fight the people of the islands the boy is caught in the fray. This story is a great book full of excitment like in the middle of battles or running away in a boat. Even a point where the boy must escape from being sacrificed. This is a wonderful book which I encourage many to read.

Better each time I read it By Hannah Full of historical and cultural information, while keeping mostly clean in light of its content, 'By Right of Conquest' gives a balanced picture of Cortez and the Aztecs. Though it deals with horrifically violent events, they are written non-descriptively. The characters are easy to relate to and the story is interesting. Roger doesn't always do what is right, but his aim is always to do righteously and he looks out for others more than for himself. Highly recommended for those who enjoy historical fiction or want to study this time period or culture.

But she follows up with a unique and wonderful sequel in The Lost Princess Meigen.Princess Alena is a widow with a young son living at the mercy of her tyrannical father-in-law, the King of Meigen. Much to her chagrin she's been offered as the price of an alliance with another kingdom. She departs, leaving her son behind. Escorted by Ryce the Warrior and Sherwin, a handsome physician, she finds herself developing an affinity for the medical man. As they journey to Elmetia to meet the king and encounter various trials there, Alena finds herself in love with Sherwin even though she's duty bound to marry the king. Can she obey the order of her father-in-law and risk the dangers of such an action to follow her heart?Much like J.R.R. Tolkien, James takes the reader to another time and place with a medieval bent except that Ms. James takes us to real-time and place in the early 600's AD of Britannia. She accomplishes her magic without elves, wizards, dwarves or mystical creatures. With intense research to give her story authenticity she takes what little is known from that time and tells a fictional tale of romance and adventure to please any lover of the genre. Another wonderful story by a fabulous author.

A Duty Bound Princess By Victoria Pitts Caine Princess Alena, the widow of the prince who was once heir to the thrown of Meigen, must leave her young son and to journey to an arranged marriage in another land. Two of the knights of Angularem have come to escort her to King Niall, her betrothed.Her cruel father-in-law, Conall, who sent her into the marital contract, holds her young son captive. To distance her mind from her own tragedy, Alena finds herself enchanted by the use of herbs and potions of Sherwin one of her escorts and even more so, captivated by the man himself.Sherwin discovers his feelings for her as well, but she belongs to his King and he must not betray him. While Niall himself struggles with the situation of marrying someone he doesn’t love, his kingdom comes under siege. Sherwin and Alena are forced to fight for what they believe is right.Ms. James paints a beautiful story with her words transporting the reader back to 626 AD. The language used and the information she has undoubtable researched makes the story real and believable. This is the second book I’ve read by Ms. James and hopefully there will be more to follow.

Enjoyable Read By DaisyJ Princess Alana is cruelly separated from her young son by her father-in-law and to divert her pain she becomes fascinated by the herbs ointments used in the Infirmary where she encounters Sherwin. Sherwin struggles over his feelings for Alana, after all she is betrothed to the King and he’s a mere Knight. Not only that but he’d also failed to prevent the death of King Niall’s previous wife. How could he look the king in the face or attend to Alana’s health when they had embraced? Alana believes denial is the best option and he reluctantly acquiesces. However, he agrees to take her on as his assistant to write up the medical notes as he does his rounds and finally Alana feels useful. Their relationship deepens but neither wish to dishonour the King, despite his reasons for marrying, especially when the kingdom comes under siege. Another enjoyable story from Ms James.

By Jason Wolosonovich First some general, higher-level thoughts and comments before I dive into specifics:MY BACKGROUND:Data Scientist; B.S. in Economics and M.S. in Business Analytics; experienced (though by no means expert) user of Scikit-learnOVERALL THOUGHTS:I've purchased and read (virtually) every Machine Learning book that aims to teach the reader the basics of ML using the Scikit-learn library as the main focus. I've found them to be...less than satisfactory. The examples in other books often use ML techniques in contexts for which they are not intended to be used and/or contexts they are not used in out in the real world (among other issues I have found within them).In stark contrast, Python Machine Learning by Sebastian Raschka is stunningly-impressive, not only for the breadth and depth of coverage, but also in the manner the information is presented to the reader.To date, I have not encountered a book on ML that incorporates multiple levels of learning in a manner such as this. It is the textual equivalent of a Neural Network with hundreds of hidden layers running on the latest NVIDIA GPU (if that comparison is lost on you, don’t worry; it’ll all make sense by the time you finish the book).One of the underlying (though understated) themes in the book is the importance of using visual aids where appropriate to gauge the performance of the algorithms you’re using as well as to understand exactly what is going on behind the scenes, so-to-speak. If you’re a novice user of the Matplotlib graphics library for Python, this book will greatly improve your visualization skills by the time you’re done which I found to be an added bonus.Another underlying theme is basic optimization using the NumPy library. This is reinforced throughout the book in the examples that you code by hand. Ditto for the Pandas library. To those of you brand-new to Python, you may not fully appreciate this aspect of the book until you gain some more experience and you’ve gone through the book a few times. For those of you who are more experienced users, the examples provide an amazing amount of insight into simple ways to make your code more efficient. Indeed, “Best Practices” abound in Python Machine Learning.As a final general thought, Sebastian is an active contributor to Scikit-learn; something I do not believe to be the case with the authors of the other books that I’ve read. In order to effectively demonstrate and communicate the power of the Scikit-learn library, you really need to be familiar with it from a fundamental level. Sebastian has this knowledge in spades and that becomes readily apparent as you progress through the book. He makes no assumption about the knowledge base of the reader—he doesn’t have to—because the book incorporates learning styles appropriate for differing skill levels (see below)FOR BEGINNING USERS:You may have some experience with Scikit-learn and Python, though not necessarily enough where you have developed some of the “best practices” I mentioned above; you’re still getting comfortable using the library and the Python environment. This book is definitely for you!The best way to learn this subject is by coding examples. You could not ask for a finer book on the subject; for those just starting their ML journey, you’re in good hands with Sebastian. You’ll get an excellent, hands-on education using some of the most important ML algorithms in use today in the most popular ML library used in Python. You’ll begin to develop good habits and you’ll see from a basic level, how to actually create algorithms on your own, outside of Scikit-learn! Then after you’ve had the experience of coding the algorithm by hand, you’ll move to Scikit-learn and get even more hands-on experience. You will learn about the tried-and-true algorithms that have been around for decades as well as concepts that are still in their infancy and are considered the current state-of-the-art. And as I said, you’ll learn about them by actually using them to build ML models. You’ll see how you take a concept for a project and turn it into reality using some really fantastic algorithms.FOR INTERMEDIATE USERS:You are comfortable using Python and Scikit-learn and have participated (or you are considering participating) in one or more Kaggle competitions. You may have some good habits/best practices formed but you’re looking to take the next step; you may know how to take a project from the data gathering and cleaning stage to a final model, but you may not have actually done it or you aren’t sure how to properly evaluate the model you have created in the end stages; you want to gain a thorough understanding of which situations are appropriate for each of the algorithms and more importantly, which situations are NOT appropriate for each of the algorithms; you want to gain a firm knowledge of how the algorithms work and you’re curious about what the state-of-the-art concepts are. Good news!This book is DEFINITELY for you.There comes a time in every Data Scientist’s life when you have read everything you can find on how to structure and complete projects and you feel confident that you’re ready. Then you start and you realize during the course of a project that you suddenly have a dozen more questions:What should I do with all of these missing values?Should I use PCA and/or other dimensionality reduction techniques?How many folds should I use in my Cross Validation?Should I use Nested Cross Validation or will simple K-Fold Cross Validation suffice?Do I need to standardize my data in order to use run a Logistic Regression algorithm?How about with a Random Forest?What performance metric is most appropriate for my model?What is L1 and L2 regularization (again) and when should I use it?If you have ever asked yourself any of these questions, rest assured this book will become your go-to reference for these questions as well as questions that you haven’t even thought of yet. Sebastian will fill in the gaps in your knowledge and you’ll gain the confidence to tackle the projects you have been looking forward working on all this time.FOR ADVANCED USERS:Much of the information in this book may be familiar to you, however the mathematical concepts behind the algorithms may not be. You may be interested in reading the seminal research on each of the concepts presented in the book. Sebastian has you covered as well. He provides symbolic mathematical proofs for those so-inclined, as well as a multitude of citations for where you can find the research that supports and/or explores the concepts more thoroughly. The book is well-researched and cited and the concepts are given very thorough treatment.TL;DR (SUMMARY):I realize the experience levels described above are subjective. 24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. My new #1 Python ML book! By BRIAN M THOMAS This is a fantastic book, even for a relative beginner to machine learning such as myself. The first thing that comes to mind after reading this book is that it was the perfect blend (for me at least) of theory and practice, as well as breadth and depth.Let’s face it, we know that machine learning isn’t an easy subject. You need theory…but you also need practice in the form of some serious coding before you really start understanding it. And this is one area where Sebastian’s book shines: it contains a plethora of really good code examples that are illuminating and well explained, and which cover a very wide range of different machine learning algorithms. And, speaking of code, as another reviewer has pointed out, another huge plus is that, in many places, Sebastian shows you how to gauge the performance of your code and make it more efficient.For me, the best measure of any book such as this is how many “ah ha!” moments I had while reading it. And I had more than a few while reading Sebastian’s book. One such “ah ha!” moment came while reading chapter 12 (and this also illustrates that nice blend of theory and practice I already mentioned above). In this particular chapter, he discusses training artificial neural networks for image recognition. At the heart of this approach is back propagation, which is pretty much THE bread and butter behind multilayered neural networks. He presents a detailed discussion of back propagation in two separate pieces: one that is intuitive and “top down”; the other a more mathematical, “bottoms up” approach that goes through the algorithm step by step, showing how the gradients are computed and the weights updated. His treatment of back propagation was one of the better explanations I’ve seen and really cleared things up for me.One last thing I must mention: at the time of release, this was the first machine learning book for Python (to my knowledge) that has an entire chapter devoted to Theano, which he uses to parallelize neural network training. For those who don’t know, Theano is a particularly nice (not to mention very powerful) Python library for doing machine learning, most especially if you can utilize the power of GPU computing. In addition, that particular chapter (13) also introduces the brand new Python library named Keras, which is built on top of Theano and is a really nice library for the rapid building and prototyping of neural networks (in the spirit of Torch). Being a brand new library, his treatment of Keras was necessarily brief, but it was a great starting point.In conclusion, I am very confident that if you do pick up this book, you won’t be at all disappointed. And be sure and grab the accompanying code for the book on his GitHub repository (just look for “python-machine-learning-book” on github.com/rasbt.) His code is top notch and I’ve yet to encounter any problems with it.

28 of 32 people found the following review helpful. I'm Now a Fanboy By Perry Nally Technical, but not too much. Let's face it, machine learning algorithms are technical in nature. However, this book allows you to gloss over the actual technical details if you don't really need to understand them right away and view the implementation of the logic in the code snippets. Though, I must say, the presentation of the technical subjects are explained clearly and with supporting graphs and images to help visualize the concepts. It was a wonderful experience to understand the code, even though the theory was also given. This allows most people to jump right in and start writing in python. For the mathematicians out there, you can take the equations and verify them if need be.The ideas build upon each other and just like teaching a child to talk, the quality of machine learning seems to be about getting good training sets for your algorithms. As such, Sebastian is good about giving in-depth, best practice steps on how to make sure your training data is clean and normalized, as well as your feature selection is relevant - which was great. You'll learn how to merge results from multiple data sets into a more thorough model in order to filter out weaknesses of various algorithms. You'll be able to predict future outcomes using regression analysis using techniques from statistics to look for patterns and anomalies, again, all explained in very understandable words. Though the content and speed of the book is all very good and relevant, the icing on the cake is in the last two chapters (which you need to have worked up to in the previous chapters); understanding and then creating a layered neural network to solve complex problems like hand written digit recognition. And to top it all off he teaches us how to make it more powerful using the Theano tool.You also gain great insight into many uses of the python language, SQLite databases, implement it by developing a small web application during the process, and understanding some parallel processing - from loading large data sets and processing them to using math and science libraries to process the data without having to be a rocket scientist.Another great benefit of this read is not just the programming and math techniques you'll learn, but the right questions you need to ask about your data to make the results useful - unsupervised learning. The data sets used in the book range from breast cancer subjects to political science and from movie reviews to processing topics in order to determine a particular bias and then on to image processing.The only downside (if you can even call it that) is that there is a lot of math involved, but to his credit, Sebastian teaches it in such a way that you don't really need to understand the math equation to understand how the equation works. In essence he is saying, "You don't need to understand the laws of physics to build a house, but here are a set of tools to help you create a magnificent house."The fundamental concepts I've learned have opened the door to an enormous amount of possibilities I could not have even thought of doing had I not read this book. I used to think that true machine learning was only for super geniuses. But now I feel like I have another set of tools I can use to perform nearly superhero tasks. Python Machine Learning will be a reference book I use for many years to come.

Deceiving Title By Pamela Bryan The title of this book drew me because I do have a passion for teaching and I do consider myself a teacher though not professionally.This book is about discipleship of a particular religion! The layout and writing still is bland and drab. Upon purchase this was not what I expected, the title should have been straightforward and not deceptive. The contents of this book is based on how to become a teacher of this religion. I am not against religion but should be upfront and declare what is and not try to pass off as something else. For these reasons I do not like this book at all!

If one is reading for historical principles, then this book is a worthy read. The book is designed to instruct teacher for the Church of Later Day Saints but that does not make the educational principles any less sound.

Hill I was looking for education related materials... this is NOT a guide to foundations in education. This is a ruse. I am not opposed to religious materials, but please don't disguise it as something else. Misleading.
