“Lark recounts…the sometimes peaceful, sometimes uneasy relationship between the Maori natives and the pakeha―the colonists. And the land, which can be rocky and formidable and also breathtakingly beautiful, is as much a character as anyone else." ―Historical Novel Society

New Zealand, 1893: William Martyn is better educated and more cultivated than the other men breaking their backs searching for gold near Queenstown. William is the son of landed Irish nobility, and he comes to town ready to invest in the best equipment. On his search for supplies, he encounters spirited and beautiful young Elaine O’Keefe, who promptly falls in love with him. He is captivated by her charms until Kura, Elaine’s half-Maori cousin, comes to visit. William succumbs at once to Kura’s exotic beauty and free-spiritedness, and tension develops not only between the two cousins but also between the colonial settlers and their Maori neighbors.

Review “I lost myself in the first book and am happy to say I was equally engrossed in the second…Lark does not stint on richly drawn characters. To anyone who may be dismayed by the book’s length, trust me, you’ll wish it was even longer. I eagerly await the next installment.” —Historical Novels Review

Like the first novel in the series, the characters are very well developed - both the heroes and the villains. And there see villains! The author did a good job of carrying the original characters forward, and I appreciated the subtle reminders about who some of the characters were - it's been a while since I read the first book. I so appreciate how the author brings New Zealand near the turn of the 20th century alive - love it.

Song of the Spirits By Sandy G Read the first book of this series "In the Land of the Long White Cloud" and could not wait for this book to come out. I pre-ordered it for my Kindle and it downloaded as soon as it was available. Such a neat idea. I am about half way through this book and am enjoying it as much as the first. I hope there will be a third in this series. This is just my kind of read and it is difficult to put it down when I start reading. It takes place in the 1800"s and I so enjoy books of that era.
